Horse Source hits 10,000 foal passport registration milestone
Horse Sport Irelands (HSI) online digital passporting service, Horse Source, has reached a major milestone as it processed its 10,000th foal registration this week.Since its inception as a platform in the summer of 2024, Horse Sources capabilities have been expanding and improving, and the 10,000th processed foal application is a testament to the incredible work carried out by the Registrations Unit of HSI.In further good news, Horse Source has also now processed over 5,000 change of ownership applications, as well as more than 1,100 endorsements and more than 1,200 name changes.2025 has seen the system provide a more efficient service for Irish breeders, with most applications processed below the anticipated and expected waiting times provided in HSIs service level agreement.Chief Executive, Denis Duggan, was keen to praise breeders for their uptake of the system this year, as well as thanking the registrations team of HSI.He said: The staff have done an excellent job this year, and that is reflected by the numbers of foal applications processed and the efficiency in getting the completed passports out to our breeders. We asked breeders to embrace this new system and to be patient and understanding as we made the transition to Horse Source, which they have. Now the benefits of Horse Source are being reaped, with much lower turnaround times. We are pleased with some of the positive feedback from breeders. We have also identified some areas for improvement in the process, and we will continue to refine and enhance it ahead of 2026.HSI continues to strive to add new elements to Horse Source and there will be some exciting additions in the coming months, but for now I would like to commend breeders, and our staff, for helping us deliver this system and making Horse Source a success. To celebrate reaching the milestone, HSI will be rewarding the breeder of the 10,000th foal processed with a free foal passport, and will be contacting that breeder in the coming days to inform and thank them. The post Horse Source hits 10,000 foal passport registration milestone appeared first on .

The FEIs Blood Rule: Are We Really Willing to Jump Backwards?
Next month, the FEI is expected to approve a rule change allowing horses to continue competing after visible bleeding reversing a welfare safeguard into an administrative warning. The proposal places the sports welfare is paramount rhetoric at odds with its fragile social licence. The post The FEIs Blood Rule: Are We Really Willing to Jump Backwards? appeared first on Horses and People.

  • Irish Sport Horses reward their breeders at Le Lion and at Maryland
The 7 year old winner at Le Lion proves traditional breeding has lots to offer out of a TIH mare who is by a CP sire. John Flynn must be pleased as he bred two of the finishers in the 6 year olds. Great to see the Paddy Joyce bred Sunday Times proving the longevity of the TIH getting a 10th spot in a 5* at 18 years old, but he has class being by Cult Hero.See below the full list of International Eventing Results for this week.Mondial du Lion Young Horse Championships (FRA) 16th 19th October 20257 Year Olds.1st Brookfield Danny de Muze (ISH)[was Danny de Muze] 2018 gelding by Im Special de Muze (BWP) out of Gortglas Sparrow (ISH)[TIH] by Ashfield Bobby Sparrow (CP). Coyle on fire at Tryon
Derry native posts five-star victory while Sweetnam, Bourns, Swail and Lynch all bag top-tier podiumsDaniel Coyle enjoyed a monumental week in the Major League Show Jumping event at Tryon Equestrian Center, securing four major results with four different horses, a testament to the depth of talent he has at his disposal thanks to Ariel Granges Lothlorien Farm. The highlight was a five-star Winning Round success on Saturday, in which the Derry pilot led home an Irish 1-2 with the resurgent Farrel, as Andrew Bourns proved the closest chaser on board Perte Totale De Res Nova.Coyle also had a runner-up finish in the five-star FEI MLSJ individual competition the previous night with the Queen of Lothlorien, Legacy, and bagged a brace of two-star victories with Calippo 57 and Daydream, the latter in Fridays two-star Grand Prix.Shane Sweetnam and Conor Swail joined Bourns as five-star silver medallists, with Sweetnam guiding the Patrick Connolly-bred marvel James Kann Cruz (ISH) to a fifth straight five-star Grand Prix podium and eighth in all this year.Shane Sweetnam (left) after recording a fifth straight Grand Prix podium with James Kann Cruz (ISH) when second at Tryon in North Carolina on SaturdayMeanwhile, Swail was denied glory on another Irish Sport Horse, the Brian Duff-bred Clonterm Obolensky by one-hundredth of a second on Thursday night.Of course the MLSJ has a team concept at its core and Michael Duffy helped his Team Helios secure victory in the team competition with Be Sky Hawk.Elsewhere, Denis Lynch finished third in the valuable Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Rabat with Cordial yesterday (Sunday), while Eoin McMahon was a two-star winner at Peelbergen on Friday night. But there is no doubting that North Carolina was the hub of the high-class achievement by Green Jackets and that Coyle was front and centre. His win arrived in a 1.45m jump-off class in which the top ten progressed through the opening round and it was the 15-year-old Farrel continuing his fairytale run of form following his comeback from a two-year retirement, haring around in the decider without any errors and in a magnificent time of 48.47 seconds. That was enough to account for Bourns and his progressive ten-year-old, but the Galwegian nonetheless made sure to be one of only three double clears and bagged the silver medal by clocking 50.14.It was an eighth victory of the year, and fourth at five-star level for Farrel, and he also contributed to the four-star Nations Cup success in Vancouver, when Coyle was joined by his brother Jordan, first cousin Christian and close friend Swail.Legacy might not have bagged gold but she certainly got supporters engaged, earning animated appreciation after her round in the 1.50m individual speed class. The 15-year-old scorched around the arena clear in 64.62, despite rarely looking like she was out of third gear.Only Roberto Teran Tafur (COL) and Condara could better that, barely touching the ground as they left all the rails up and stopped the clock in 62.34 to claim the victory. That matched another five-star runner-up return for an Irish rider 24 hours later, as Coyle and Legacys Olympic teammates from Paris, Sweetnam and James Kann Cruz (ISH) sparkled with their efforts to secure the $340,000 MLSJ Grand Prix, just missing out in a jump-off by only two-tenths of a second by Nicola Philippaerts (BEL) with Gadget Mouche.A dozen partnerships advanced from the opening 1.60m test, including Duffy and Be Sky Hawk, who had contributed to Team Helios success in the MLSJ team event the night before.Unfortunately, the Galway athlete and his up-and-coming nine-year-old had one rail down but eighth was still worth a lot of prize money in a stacked tiebreaker. It was no surprise to see Gizmo Partners James Kann Cruz go clear once more with his Cork-born navigator, and the time recorded of 43.94 was too hot for the likes of third-placed World No 1 Kent Farrington with Greya, as well as the riders of the calibre of Abdel Sad (BEL), McLain Ward (USA), Skylar Wireman (USA) and Tiffany Foster (CAN).But Philippaerts and Gadget Mouche found the tiniest margins to grab the first prize, going clear in 43.74 to prevent a second straight Irish triumph in the Grand Prix after Swails win with Casturano 12 months ago.I have a lot of experience coming second this year so I always felt there was someone that maybe could catch me, but I left everything out there, said Sweetnam.James Kann Cruz is brilliant, and his results speak for themselves. Not just this year, every year. When you go to jump on him, you know you have a chance.Sad and Calvaro denied Swail another five-star success at this show in Thursday nights five-star Grand Prix Qualifier. The Down native maintained his consistency in this series with the most agonising of second-place finishes, partnering Oliver Glancys Clonterm Obolensky (ISH).The jump-off for the 1.50m class was a lengthy affair, with 17 of the 46 pairs returning but when the dust had settled, it was Said who just prevailed, stopping the timers at 36.66 with Calvaro to wrench the top prize from Swails grasp, after the 54-year-old and Obi had appeared to have done enough with his ultra-fast second clear.Michael Duffy on the top step of the podium with teammates Richard Vogel and Tony StormannsIn the $262,500 five-star team competition on Friday evening, Duffy and Be Sky Hawk were joined by German duo Tony Stormanns aboard Donjon dAsschaut and Richard Vogel (GER) riding Michael Jackson W to win Leg 5.Seventeen-year-old Stormanns, whose mother Helena is team manager, made an impactful debut by jumping to the teams only fault-free day. Duffy and Vogel jumped jump-off clears to set the youngster up for a heroic conclusion, a clear in 46.80 seconds cementing the spoils. If you throw enough mud at the wall, some of its going to stick eventually, joked Duffy. Thats always our motto; to be there or thereabouts as much as we can. Clear rounds matter. In the end, we can get caught up on the speed, but the clear rounds are probably what matter most. Its brilliant. Its great for young Tony. Hes only 17, hes only the pup of the litter. Its great for him, last to go and all that.Helena is the boss and she wanted myself and Richie to get into the jump-off if we could. Hes no slouch, Tony, for his age. Hes well able to put the ball in the net.We havent been in the bottom four yet (so) if we keep chipping away at it over the season, well hopefully be there or thereabouts.Lynch didnt top the winners podium in Rabat but he enjoyed a strong week in the Moroccan capital with his brace of five-star 16-year-olds, posting a clear round for his team with Cordial in the Longines Global Champions League on Friday and then just missing out on a top-five finish in the five-star jump-off class on Saturday, making the tiebreaker after the indomitable Brooklyn Heights made light of the 1.50m test. The duo added another clear round in a time of 39.94 but Germanys Janne Friederike Meyer-Zimmerman took the major spoils with Iron Dames High Level, who posted the only sub 38-second round, 37.18, to prevail with a degree of comfort from her compatriot Christian Ahlmann, with DAganix (38.43).Lynch saved the best for last for yesterday (Sunday), the Tipperary man returning with Cordial to make a seven-combo jump-off that yielded only one double clear. It was 19-year-old Monaco representative, Anastasia Nielsen that managed the only double clear, with Action Man, to log a landmark result. Andreas Schoul (SUI) was fastest of four-faulters with Napoli vh Nederassenthof (45.59) with Lynch and Cordial next on 46.51 after having one rail down. That moved Lynch to sixth in the individual rankings, just ahead of Scott Brash (GBR), with Belgian Gilles Thomas still in a clear lead.Denis Lynch moved up to sixth in the LGCT individual rankings after his third place return from the LGCT Grand Prix of Rabat with CordialMikey Pender was fourth in a five-star speed class earlier in the week with Madgeslane Louis (ISH), the hugely promising eight-year-old he bred himself and co-owns with his mother AnnMarie. The athlete from Co Kildare coolly plotted his way around the Moroccan arena, clearing all 14 jumps over the 1.45m track in a time of 70.58 seconds. The W went to Denmarks Zascha Nygaard (DEN) with another eight-year-old, Stathagnio PS, who registered a blindingly quick time of 61.07.At two-star level, after Coyle prevailed in the 75-strong Grand Prix Qualifier at Tryon with a double clear and winning tiebreak time of 32.22 with Calippo 57 on Thursday night, he held off two whipper-snappers too young to drink the champagne that sprayed around afterwards, to land the Grand Prix itself 24 hours later.Coming in last in the jump-off with Daydream, the Ardmore man snatch the verdict with a clear round in a rapid time of 38.01 to deny the 17-year-old German, Tony Stormanns, with Cassius Clay.Olivia Sweetnam, the 16-year-old daughter of Shane though representing USA, was third with Epic.Daydream winning her third Grand Prix of the year when scoring at two-star level at Tryon for Daniel CoyleAriel Grange bought her last year, and we had really high hopes for her, Coyle said of Daydream. This is her third Grand Prix win this year.McMahon, the Clare rider who had a big hand in helping bring the aforementioned Clonterm Obolensky through the ranks until Swail took over the reins in May, got a taste of success with Calleth You Cometh I in the two-star Grand Prix Qualifier at Peelbergens 10th anniversary show on Friday night, beating off another dozen competitors in the tiebreaker to land the spoils in the GumBits Arena with a time of 33.79.BREEDINGCSF JAMES KANN CRUZ (ISH) 2013 gelding by Kannan (KWPN) out of CSF Telly Cruz (ISH) by Cruising (ISH)[TIH]. History maker Cassells couldnt be happier with World Championship medal haul
On a day of days for Irish eventing, Ian Cassells brought home a pair of shiny new trinkets from the World Championships in Le Lion dAngers Irelands first medal wins in 10 years.Cassells, who has enjoyed a sensational season in the saddle which included a senior European Championship team silver medal, added another silver as well as a bronze in France this afternoon. He finished runner-up in the 6-year-old division at the FEI WBFSH Eventing World Breeding Championships for Young Horses with the Irish Sport Horse Rutland Flamenco, and followed it up with a second podium on board Noa W in the 7-year-old division.Cassells becomes the first Irish athlete to medal at the championships since Sophie Richards won bronze in 2015 and he couldnt contain his excitement after his medal win with Rutland Flamenco. He said: Its been an amazing week the mare (Rutland Flamenco) has tried so hard for me all week and I couldnt be happier with her. Weve only had her since the start of the year and have produced her quite slowly. Every time shes run shes done better and got more comfortable. She just keeps trying her best for me.Lying in fourth position overnight in the 6-year-old division, Cassells needed a clean round of jumping in the final phase and Rutland Flamenco delivered in spades, coming home faultless to finish on his dressage score of 28.9, just 3.3 penalties behind Belgiums Lara De Liedekerke-Meier with Tara Van Het Leliehof. There was even more work to be done in the 7-year-old category as he sat in seventh position going into today on his dressage score of 32.8. Adding just 0.4 time penalties to that tally, it meant there was no room for error for the combinations placed in front of him. With poles dropping, Cassells continued to climb the leaderboard, with just Tom McEwen with Brookfield Danny De Muze and De Liedekerke-Meier to jump with Helios.A Clear from McEwen and just the one pole down from the Belgian meant a bronze win was Cassells result, one Irelands Chef dEquipe Debbie Byrne, taking charge of her maiden championships, was immensley proud of.Byrne said: Its been an incredible weekend just fantastic. I joked that I should probably quit while Im ahead! To have two podiums, one in each age group, three six-year-olds in the top 12 and three seven-year-olds in the top 12 also, we cant complain.Ive been really lucky with the people weve had here all week owners, grooms, riders etc theres been a great feeling and ambience in the barn. Everyone has been rooting for everyone else and its made my job easier theyve been great to manage. Its been a long season for these young horses, theyve been chasing qualifications, but were already looking forward to next year. Id like to thank everyone who has gotten us to to this point, from Horse Sport Ireland and the Department of Agriculture, Food and The Marine, to all of those who have put such incredible work into these horses it is days like these that make it all so very worthwhile.Dr Sonja Egan, Head of Breeding, Innovation and Development at Horse Sport Ireland, added: Ian Cassells double podium today at Mondial du Lion marks a historic achievement for Team Ireland, ending a ten-year wait for an Irish horse-and-rider combination to medal at the FEI WBFSH World Breeding Championships for Young Eventing Horses in France. My sincerecongratulationsto all connections of our outstanding horses and to Debbie Byrne in her first year at the helm of the young horse eventing team. Under her guidance Ireland secured an excellent team performance with all 6-year-old combinations inside the top 12, and four combinations in the 7-year-old top 20.This is a significant day for the Irish Sport Horse studbook which once again proves the strength and consistency of Irish breeding on the world stage. Credit to all of our fantastic breeders represented at this championships far too many to name however I do wish to recognise the breeders behind todays medal winning horses; Donal Callery breeder of Brookfield Danny De Muze (ISH), 7-year-old Champion, Eugene McEntee breeder of Rutland Flamenco (ISH), 6-year-old silver medallist and Ciara Kinsella breeder of Tykillen Tango (ISH), 6-year-old bronze medallist.Participation in these championships is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, I wish to thank them for supporting Team Ireland to achieve these excellent performances on the world stage. The post History maker Cassells couldnt be happier with World Championship medal haul appeared first on .

Irish Riders Deliver Strong Cross Country Performances at 2025 World Breeding Championships
Following an exhilarating cross country phase at the World Breeding Eventing Championships for Young Horses 2025, the Irish contingent of riders and young horses from the Irish Studbooks have delivered a commendable performance on the world stage with a number of combinations firmly in the hunt for top positions.Sitting within a pole of gold in the six-year-old division is Ian Cassells riding Rutland Flamenco (ISH) currently in fourth position. Also featuring in the top ten are both Aoife Clark with Lislee Honey (ISH) and Harry Horgan with HHE Fernhill McCoy (ISH) in eight and nineth respectively. All three combinations have remained on their dressage score heading into the final showjumping phase tomorrow.Ian Cassells is also best of the Irish in the seven-year-old division in seventh position riding Noah W (KWPN), adding nothing to their dressage score. Also featuring in the top ten is Sam Watson riding Ballybolger Goldman (ISH) in nineth, adding just 0.8 time penalties to his dressage. Other Irish combinations who delivered a clear round today were Patrick Byrne and Belline Castle ONR Candy (ISH), Noel Dunne and Kief Rhapsody of Belline (ISH), Robbie Kearns and Belline Thistle Bethelasttime (ISH), and Sian Coleman and Cairnview Crystal Springs (ISH), all sitting within the top thirty. It is all to play for tomorrow and we wish the Irish horses and riders well in the final phase!Debbie Byrne, Chef dEquipe, Eventing Young Horse Squad:What a day of sport!! Our 6yos made the course look easy & cruised around within the time. This age group amazes me how they have taken it all quite literally in their stride. The 7yo class was causing a lot of trouble, especially as the sunlight changed over some of the xc fences. Alyssa ONeill & DS Candescent were unlucky to have not adequately jumped the influential corner at 7 & were stopped later in the course. The remainder of the horses looked classy around a tough track & finished wellOur three six-year-olds are now lying in the top 10, which is an amazing achievement. The seven-year-olds have moved up the leader board, with 2 sitting nicely in the top 10.The horses are all looking fresh this evening which is promising for tomorrow. Dressage Phase Concludes at Le Lion-dAngers World Breeding Championships
The first phase of competition has come to a close at the 2025 FEI WBFSH World Breeding Eventing Championships for Young Horses, as two days of dressage wrapped up today, and Irelands hopefuls can be proud of their position going into tomorrows crosscountry testWith scores now finalized, the leaderboard is set heading into tomorrows highly anticipated cross-country phase. All three Irish combinations in the six-year-old section hold a position in the top 20 with Ian Cassels posting a fantastic score of 28.9 on board Ruthland Flamenco (ISH) to hold eight place overnight. This exciting combination have been on form all season and is less than two marks off a medal position. There were also strong performances from Irish riders in the seven -year-old section today with Robbie Kearns best of the Irish in fifteenth position riding Belline Thistle Bethelasttime (ISH) on a score of 31.3. The scores across the seven-year-old division are tight with less than thirteen marks separating the top and bottom of the leaderboard, so it is all to play for in tomorrows cross country. The leading Irish bred horse in the seven-year-old section is Boleybawn Oliva (ISH) ridden by Americas Hallie Coon sitting in overnight silver position. The mare by Jorado (KWPN) out of C-Jumps (SCSL), by Cicero Z Van Paemal (BWP) was bred in county Wicklow by Boleybawn Horses Ltd.Robbie Kearns and Belline Thistle Bethelasttime (ISH) at the FEI WBFSH Eventing World Breeding Championship for Young Horses at Le Lion dAngers 2024 Copyright: Pam Cunningham/Irish Eventing TimesDebbie Byrne, Chef dEquipe, Eventing Young Horse Squad:After the dressage phase for both age categories, there is a real positive vibe within the entire team. All the horses managed to allow their riders to ride their test in a very atmospheric setting. The 6yos all performed well & Harrys & Aoifes horses are tall athletes who will strengthen up for next year but showed serious potential in this phase. Ian rode a lovely test & sits very competitively at this stage. The 7yos really had to work for their scores as the dressage judges definitely werent giving away marks in general throughout the two days. But again, the horses allowed their riders to ride their test, so at this stage in proceedings I am very happyXC tomorrow for the 7yos asks questions the whole way but there are alternatives, & I feel they have made the 6yo class a little stronger from last year.I have a good set of riders & horses who really jump, so Im excited to see them do their thing tomorrow & see how we stand tomorrow eveningThe atmosphere within camp is fantastic with everyone pulling each other along, & it is great to have so many owners that have travelled.Irish selected Horse/Riders:Six Year OldsHHE Fernhill McCoy (ISH) (was JAG Lovestory). • Cassells to the fore as Irish assault on World Championships in Le Lion begins
Ian Cassells leads the way from an Irish perspective at the FEI WBFSH Eventing World Breeding Championships for Young Horses at Le Lion DAngers. The championships kicked off on day 1 in France with dressage for 7-year-olds and three Irish combinations took to the arena Cassells, Sian Coleman and Alyssa ONeill.Cassells and Noa W lie in 19th place overnight after their test yielded a total of 32.8 penalties, the pair showing why they finished as runners-up in the DAFM Eventing Studbook Series League.Just over four penalties behind overnight leader Lara De Liedekerke-Meier with Helios, Cassells will be very hopeful of eating into that deficit over the weekend with his KWPN gelding. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Horse Sport Ireland (@horsesportireland)Coleman and Cairnview Crystal Springs (ISH), the mare bred and owned by Co. Longfords Geraldine Quinn, totalled 38.4 penalties and will also be looking forward to Saturdays cross country as they bid to cut the gap between themselves and the leaders.Similer sentiments apply for ONeill and Irish Sport Horse DS Candescent, bred in Co. Mayo by Liam Lynskey, had a long wait yesterday to compete as the penultimate combination down the centre line, and they finished with 39.1 penalties.Tomorrow, the rest of the Irish will compete in Le Lion as the remainder of the 7-year-olds are tested in dressage, while the 6-year-old competition begins. First of the Irish into the arena will be Harry Horgan and HHE Fernhill McCoy (ISH) at 9.58am Irish time.BREEDING:Cairnview Crystal Springs (ISH).
