On a day of days for Irish eventing, Ian Cassells brought home a pair of shiny new trinkets from the World Championships in Le Lion dAngers Irelands first medal wins in 10 years.Cassells, who has enjoyed a sensational season in the saddle which included a senior European Championship team silver medal, added another silver as well as a bronze in France this afternoon.He finished runner-up in the 6-year-old division at the FEI WBFSH Eventing World Breeding Championships for Young Horses with the Irish Sport Horse Rutland Flamenco, and followed it up with a second podium on board Noa W in the 7-year-old division.Cassells becomes the first Irish athlete to medal at the championships since Sophie Richards won bronze in 2015 and he couldnt contain his excitement after his medal win with Rutland Flamenco.He said: Its been an amazing week the mare (Rutland Flamenco) has tried so hard for me all week and I couldnt be happier with her. Weve only had her since the start of the year and have produced her quite slowly. Every time shes run shes done better and got more comfortable. She just keeps trying her best for me.Lying in fourth position overnight in the 6-year-old division, Cassells needed a clean round of jumping in the final phase and Rutland Flamenco delivered in spades, coming home faultless to finish on his dressage score of 28.9, just 3.3 penalties behind Belgiums Lara De Liedekerke-Meier with Tara Van Het Leliehof.There was even more work to be done in the 7-year-old category as he sat in seventh position going into today on his dressage score of 32.8. Adding just 0.4 time penalties to that tally, it meant there was no room for error for the combinations placed in front of him.With poles dropping, Cassells continued to climb the leaderboard, with just Tom McEwen with Brookfield Danny De Muze and De Liedekerke-Meier to jump with Helios.A Clear from McEwen and just the one pole down from the Belgian meant a bronze win was Cassells result, one Irelands Chef dEquipe Debbie Byrne, taking charge of her maiden championships, was immensley proud of.Byrne said: Its been an incredible weekend just fantastic. Quaker, one of the Household Cavalry horses who bolted through London after being spooked last year,has retired to The Horse Trust.The Life Guards of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (HCMR) were on their daily morning exercise ride in April 2024 when their horses were spooked by construction rubble being dropped through a plastic tunnel from a height close to them.Five of the horses proceeded to bolt through London during rush hour, hitting several vehicles including a bus and causing a number of injuries.Quaker required surgery after suffering bleeding and a small break during the incident and spent time recovering at The Horse Trust. Last week he returned to the Buckinghamshire sanctuary to enjoy his retirement.Quaker is enjoying his new life in the country.New respite schemeThe Horse Trust is a horse charity and sanctuary which was established 139 years ago to provide retirement and respite for working horses and ponies.The charity has announced it is toexpand a new respite programme to benefit more of Londons military working horses.We have a commitment to all who serve our nation, including our much-loved service animals, said Louise Sandher-Jones, Minister for Veterans and People.Quakers well-deserved retirement comes after a stellar career in the Armed Forces and after a high-profile bolting incident, which captured the nations attention.This partnership with The Horse Trust also shows how the Army looks after its military working horses and will improve animal welfare.The Horse Trust is currently the permanent retirement home for 32 former military working horses, 26 of which have served with HCMR. On Thursday 9th October, Leicestershire-based rider James Ingham joined the prestigious ranks of legendary past winners when he clinched the Redpost Equestrian Senior Foxhunter Championship title aboard Altesse 2 VN Z at the Horse of the Year Show.James and his home produced grey mare stormed to victory in a hotly contested class that saw only four combinations make the jump-off. With a jump-off time of 31.96 seconds, James secured the coveted first place, while Senior Newcomers winner Pippa Goddard and her horse PDV Constanza took a close second. Leo Lamb and RRH Out of the Blue completed the podium line up in third place.The magnitude of the win was not lost on James, who described his victory as a massive deal for someone whose first HOYS experience had been as a young rider on ponies.James explained that he had gone into the Redpost Equestrian Senior Foxhunter Championship jump-off with determination and focus.I had my plan [] Joe Trunkfield, who I train with, said Pippa was quick and the only places I could try to beat her was one stride less to the double and one less to the blue (fence). Here, we talked to five trainers to glean their top bits of wisdom, with both western and English disciplines in mind.Photo by Svetlana/Adobe StockKnowing how bits should sit and fit in a horses mouth could help avoid serious problems and setbacksI suggest using a bit-sizer to start, says Alan Fisher, a champion trainer with over 20 years experience based in Eastover, N.C., who specializes in western pleasure prospects.He says that riders need to learn the control points of different bits, the mechanics behind mouthpieces, and what exactly should be achieved with each type of bit.A bit sizer is great to have as the first step in finding the right bit for your horse. Photo by Laura Boynton JobsonSnaffles vs. PortedThere are two important categories of bits: ported (leverage) and snaffle (direct action).Ported or correction bits come in low, medium, and high leverage levels, and feature an inverted curve, U-shape, spoon-shape, square-hinge or spade-shape at the center of the mouthpiece. These shapes provide tongue pressure relief. Western bits have shanks that connect the reins to the bit, which vary from 4 to 8 inches long.Western curb bits have many styles of shanks, metals, and mouthpieces to choose from.Both English and western ported bits come with a chain or curb strap to stop the bit from harming a horses mouth.Snaffle bits work by direct pressure from the ring to the riders hand through the rein, and either type of bit can be made from stainless steel, copper, titanium, sweet iron or aluminum. Some mild snaffles are made of plastic, rubber, leather or fabric material.Snaffle bits use direct action from the rein. Full-cheek rings help guide and turn the horse. Photo by Nigel Baker/Adobe StockSnaffle Cheek PiecesWhile ported bits always have a shank cheek, there are several common styles of cheek rings in snaffles, each with a different effect. Loose rings move with the horses lips, tongue and jaw by gliding through the attached mouthpiece. Full cheeks have two short bars coming off the sides, one on top and one on the bottom of the fixed mouthpiece. This bit is useful for young or inexperienced horses who need help with steering or to learn how to carry their head without tilting. D-ring and eggbutt snaffles are both fixed options that resemble the letter D or an oval-egg shape. These are less likely to move side to side in the mouth.Snaffle MouthpiecesAs opposed to the mouthpieces described above for ported bits, snaffles have straight mouthpieces with various shapes and joints. Non-jointed snaffles have a mouthpiece thats straight across with no breaks in the metal, rubber or plastic. Single-jointed snaffles are considered a basic, and feature a break in the bit with a joint in the middle that creates a V-shape in a horses mouth that puts rein pressure on the bars of the jaw and edges of the tongue. Double-jointed snaffles follow the shape of the tongue better than a single-jointed bit. They have two joints that connect the sides of the bit with a central link. Smooth snaffles are on the milder side and work well with sensitive mouths and for beginners who arent as gentle on a horses mouth. Twisted-wire snaffles are considered more severe and are commonly used for horses that tend to hang or pull on the riders hands, or when more control is needed, such as galloping cross-country. Roller bits have movable pieces that rotate and help a horse to relax his mouth and jaw.Combo ActionEnglish riders sometimes use leverage bits combined with snaffle action. Double bridles have a curb bit and chain, a snaffle bit with small loose rings called a bradoon, and two sets of reins. They are used in upper-level dressage and show jumping, as well as saddle seat riding. Pelham bits are most often found in hunter rings, on foxhunters, and on the polo field, and are designed to combine the action of a curb bit with a snaffle, like a double bridle.This bit provides leverage on the jaw with its lower shanks and curb chain to encourage flexion at the poll and stronger brakes, while the snaffle mouthpiece gives turning control.Pelhams are usually used with two sets of reins, although converters are available for beginners that switch the bit to one set of reinsbut these negate much of the bits action.Pelhams combine leverage and snaffle action using two sets of reins. You must take the time to practice and gain the muscle memory of going to the horses mouth softly, asking first, and giving him a chance to respond while softening with your fingers to create a nice flow without any yanking, says Alter, who owns Shawn Alter Quarter Horses in New Alexander, Pa., and specializes in showing, training, selling and judging horses for local and open shows. To be an efficient and well-rounded rider, youll need to learn to ride more with your seat and legs, and have less pull on the reins.A Bit ReactiveHorses often learn to be angry at the bit when they feel rushed or pushed beyond their abilities, says all-around Quarter Horse trainer Melissa Jones, who owns Jones Performance Horses along with her husband, Chris, in Reelsville, Ind. Horses who havent learned to give to the bit or choose not to give tend to turn defensive and act out.The more you are heavy-handed or jerk on a horses mouth, the more the horse will want to get away from that pressure, she says.Not leaning on a snaffle is important because our goal is for the horse not to lean on the bit, and holding will reinforce that.Releasing PressureTrainer Alyse Roberts says that releasing bit pressure as a reward is key for teaching a horse to self-carry correctly.Id rather see a rider who releases hand pressure too soon rather than too late, says Roberts, who owns Alyse Roberts Performance Horses located in Purcell, Okla., and specializes in all breed hunter under saddle.
