Equilibrium Massage Therapy: Supporting Equine Comfort & Performance
Equine massage therapy has become an increasingly recognised part of horse care, with many owners turning to trusted products to improve wellbeing and support recovery. Equilibrium is at the forefront of massage therapy innovation. Their product range has been developed using research-led insights, and studies have shown significant positive impacts on equine muscle condition, relaxation and movement*.In the following article, we outline key findings from independent studies into the Equilibrium Massage Back Pad and Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad to help our customers better understand how Equilibrium massage therapy can become an integral part of their equine care routine.Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back PadThe Equilibrium Massage Back Pad: Research FindingsEquilibrium Massage Pad Heatsense: Research InsightsMassage Therapy Support with the Massage Mitt HotspotRedpost Equestrian: Here to HelpThe Equilibrium Massage Back Pad: Research FindingsIn 2007, Myerscough College conducted an investigation into the short-term effects of massage therapy on horses backs, assessing any changes observed in:Back flexibilityStride lengthIndicators of relaxationEquilibrium Massage Back PadHorses in the treatment group wore the Equilibrium Massage Back Pad and these results were compared against a control group.Key Findings:The study identified several measurable short-term changes in the treatment group, including:An increase in spinal range of motion (deemed significant)Static arch and dip measurements of the spine were taken using a flexi-ruler, comparing spinal range of motion prior to treatment and after treatment. Significantly greater arch and dip measurements were recorded in the treatment group, which suggested improved flexibility and freedom of movement throughout the horses backs.Promotion of Overall Relaxation (deemed significant)Stress and relaxation were measured by taking salivary cortisol levels, measuring heart rate and recording behaviour. The heart rate results showed a significant difference between the control and treatment group, inferring that the horses treated with the massage pad were more relaxed due to the effects of the massage.Increase in stride lengthThe treatment group did show some increase in stride length in comparison to the control group.Interpretation:The data, indicative of improved relaxation, could suggest that horses receiving Equilibrium massage therapy experience improvements to their overall wellbeingHorses could demonstrate improved performance because the data suggests improved spinal flexibilityWe would also expect relaxed muscles to assist with improvements in flexibility and movement, and so we might expect to see evidence of this in the performance of competition horses (such as those performing dressage movements or jumping technical fences).Shop the Equilibrium Massage Back Pad HereEquilibrium Massage Pad Heatsense: Research Insights More recently, Equilibrium expanded their product range with the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad. This innovative product combines all the benefits of Equilibrium massage therapy alongside the controlled application of therapeutic heat.An independent investigation led by saddle fitter Jasmin Gutsell in 2024 explored short-term changes in equine back dimensions following use of the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad.Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back PadStudy Summary10 horses (ages 10-14) in regular trainingHorses were assessed before and after two sessions on separate daysThe sessions comprised of 30 minutes use of the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad (massage and heat) and a walk and trot lunge sessionA flexible curve ruler traced the shape of the back at six anatomical points (including the saddle tree point, a key load-bearing area under the saddle).Lunging was incorporated as part of the 2024 study to examine both massage and exercise effects.Outcomes and ImplicationsStatistically significant changes in back dimensions were recorded after a single session with the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back PadMost measured areas showed increases in dimension, interpreted as muscle expansion likely linked to increased blood flow and muscle activationSome areas showed a decrease in size, thought to reflect muscle relaxation or fluid redistribution rather than loss of muscle tone. There was no strong correlation between the changes observed following use of the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad and those seen after lunging. These results showed that the effects of the Heatsense pad were different from those produced by lunging, suggesting that massage with heat may influence the muscles in ways that exercise alone does not. This supports the suggestion that the Heatsense pad has the potential to be used effectively as a warm up or preparatory tool before exercise or competition. The Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad has the potential to maximise your warm up before training sessions or competitions.Shop the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad HereMassage Therapy Support with the Massage Mitt HotspotThe Equilibrium Massage Mitt Hotspot draws on the same research as the Heatsense pad in its design, but allows more targeted application to specific muscle groups. Winter Joints Keeping your horse Superflex-ible and in the Metazone this winter
Answering your questions on which product is best for you and your horseThe following blog has been written by NAF.The cold dark days of winter can be particularly challenging for our horses joint health. Increased time in the stable, which limits their natural free movement, together with less structured exercise and colder temperatures can all impact natural flexibility.Research shows that using targeted nutritional support can help horses and ponies maintain sound, free moving joints. But with seemingly so many products to choose from, where do you start, and how do you know which one is right for you and your horse? We asked Head Nutritionist, Kate Hore, your most common questions.Superflex Senior may be a suitable supplement for your horse this winter.NAF Superflex Senior PowderQ: What exactly is Metazone, and what does it do?Q: Has Metazone been trialed?Q: Is Metazone the 'go-to' supplement for joint health?Q: What is the difference between Superflex and Metazone?Times when getting into the Metazone might be useful:Product SummarySummary Table: What is right for your horse?Q: What exactly is Metazone, and what does it do?Kate: Metazone is our unique new formula, designed to support the bodys own natural anti-inflammatory pathways. Those pathways are an essential part of your horses response to any physiological attack. The inflammatory pathway initiates and speeds your horses response to challenge. However, byproducts such as free radical toxins can proliferate, along with the fluid accumulation typically seen in the early stages, so their internal anti-inflammatory pathway needs to be able to clear the area and flush out toxins before long term health and stability can be restored. This is where Metazone comes in. Five Star Metazone harnesses powerful phytochemicals those active constituents found in key botanical herbs and roots to work with your horse to support their own anti-inflammatory pathway, wherever that is required.Metazone is designed to support the bodys own anti-inflammatory pathways.NAF Metazone Five Star PowderQ: Has Metazone been trialed?Kate: Yes, Metazone has been fully researched. Unfortunately, due to legal Marketing restrictions on feed, which includes feed supplements like Metazone, we are not able to fully share results, or the details of the trial here. However, we are happy to confirm that Metazone was independently tested in post-graduate research by the experts at The Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester. The research centered on sound horses in regular work, with the only change to their management being the addition of Metazone. Video gait analysis was assessed by independent vets who were blinded to the stage of each video. The results were peer reviewed and presented at the European Workshop on Equine Nutrition, at their bi-annual congress in 2024.Metazone has been fully researched, so that you can feed it with confidence.NAF Metazone Five Star LiquidReference. : Hedges. E, Moore-Colyer M.J.S & Daniels. S (2024). The effect of supplementing sound horses with a herbal complex on stride characteristics. Proceedings of 11th European Workshop on Equine Nutrition, Norway.Q: Is Metazone the go-to supplement for joint health?Kate: Not necessarily. Whilst the trial looked at stride characteristics, as a useful way to gain quantitative (measurable) data, Metazone is not designed as a joint or stride product only. Rather Metazone can be used whenever horses need that specific additional support response to challenge.Metazone doesnt contain the key nutrients such as glucosamine, MSM or chondroitin sulphate, that are associated with joint growth, repair, strength and integrity. For those we need to look to the Superflex family.Superflex provides ideal daily nourishment for sound, healthy joints.NAF Superflex Senior PowderQ: What is the difference between Superflex and Metazone?Kate: Superflex is feeding the joint, while Metazone responds to pressures on the joint. Superflex or Superflex Senior, depending on your horses lifestage and work rate, provide ideal daily nourishment for sound, healthy joints. As an insurance measure they should be your go-to for maintenance. For most horses, once on Superflex you should find that is all they need to enjoy flexibility for life. For many horses, Superflex is the ideal supplement to support lifelong flexibility.NAF Superflex 5 Star LiquidHowever, just like ourselves, there will be those times when additional support might be useful. Metazone is great for adding in around at those times, alongside their Superflex, just to make sure you are offering optimal support.Times when getting into the Metazone might be useful:TravellingPeak competition during and recoveryFollowing acute joint stress, such as injuryThe new 500ml size is not only useful for trial but is also a really handy size for popping in the lorry for travel.NAF Metazone Five Star LiquidProduct SummaryKate: There are no hard and fast rules, as all horses are individuals. If youre unsure which joint support will suit your horse best please do Contact Us and well be happy to advise. However, in brief, we could say:Superflex OriginalA sound investment for young and early career horses. Research shows that adaptations in the joint capsule due to joint stress can be seen even before some horses have started their ridden career. It makes sense to choose a well-formulated, trusted product to provide the nutrients required for joint growth and repair, as they develop into their career.Superflex SeniorAs horses age joint stress is inevitable and more evident. Therefore, we recommend Superflex Senior to maintain soundness in all working horses once they get into their teens and beyond. However, Senior doesnt necessarily have to mean senior in age. Superflex Senior is also the ideal choice for younger horses if they are working hard, or if they have any history of concerns with joint health.MetazoneMetazone is a great short-term option if your horse needs a little top-up, as joints come under increased pressure. Alongside one of the Superflex family you should only need Metazone short-term. However, Metazone can also be a great daily option for those where supporting that anti-inflammatory system, enabling the horse to maintain comfort, is the main concern. This may be older horses, or those with particular challenges. Whatever your reason for choosing, its good to know that Metazone is suitable for use under FEI competition with no withdrawal.Devils ReliefA great choice for those looking for cost-effective joint comfort in older horses. Though do be aware that as Devils Relief contains devils claw it is not suitable for use in competition.Summary Table: What is right for your horse?Superflex OriginalSuperflex SeniorMetazoneDevils ReliefFeeds the jointsProvides ComfortEarly career horsesRidden horses over 12yrsShort-term for all/ as neededRetirees where cost-effective comfort countsYounger horses with a history of joint stress Maintenance for those needing to help the anti-inflammatory pathwaysCompetition horsesDelivers premium comfort, with no competition withdrawalShop All NAF Products HereHow to Help an Overweight Horse: Practical Tips for Healthy Weight LossSupport Your Horses Respiratory Health this Summer with NAFFly Free with NAF Off Top Tips on Repelling FliesNAF Metazone How Will It Support Your Horse?Spring is Here! Winter Horse Feeding Guide: Best Forage Alternatives & Expert Advice
As we head into the colder months, a hot topic in tack room conversations is the availability (and rising cost) of forage and horse feed. There is also a higher likelihood of undesirable behaviours, like crib-biting or weaving.Smart Forage ManagementIf supplies are short, small changes to how you feed horses and store forage can make what you have last longer:Small-holed haynets or double-netting to slow down consumption and reduce wasteShires Greedy Feeder Medium HaynetElico Little Piggy HaynetLemieux Hippo HaynetMinimise wastage by using hay feeders Haygain DuraBar Corner Hay FeederProStable Hayfeeder Corner Hay BarHaygain Forager Slow FeederShop Our Full Range of Haynets and Feeders HereConsider using rubber matting in feeding areas to stop hay from being trampled into bedding.Arkmat Easy Sweep Low Bubble Rubber Mat 17mmArkmat Bubbletop Rubber Mat 10mm Arkmat Supersoft EVA Stable Floor Rubber Mat 24mm Shop Our Full Range of Rubber Mats hereStore bales properly to prevent spoilage: keep them dry, off the ground, and well ventilated.Thinking Beyond Traditional ForageIf your forage supply wont stretch throughout winter, high-fibre feeds for horses such as chopped fibres, soaked products, or pelleted fibre sources can safely supplement or partially replace hay and haylage. How does diet affect behaviour? Feeding the Fizzy Horse with Dengie Horse Feeds
The following Blog has been written by Dengie Horse Feeds. With the nights starting to draw in and bonfire night on the horizon, this time of year can present a challenge if you have a horse who can be fizzy or anxious. Sometimes making some adjustments to your horse or ponys management can be helpful, but whats the best course of action when it comes to the feed?Dengie recommend evaluating your horses fibre intake when considering how feed might be impacting on your horse or ponys behaviour.Shop Dengie Horse Feeds at Redpost EquestrianWhat do they need?In general, the main aims when feeding the fizzy horse or pony are to keep their intakes of starch and sugar to a minimum. These are rapidly broken down in the horses digestive system, releasing energy quickly, so high intakes of starch and sugar are commonly associated with increasing excitable temperaments.Where does starch and sugar come from in the diet? The main source of starch in horse feeds tends to be cereal grains, with ingredients like oats containing around 40% starch. Feeds that include high levels of cereals should therefore be avoided for the fizzy or spooky individual. Even a basic horse and pony cube or cool mix may be around 15-20% starch, so its always worth checking!Whilst its not a legal requirement for manufacturers to list the starch and sugar levels on the feed label, reputable companies may list them on their website and should also be happy to provide this information on request. It might surprise you to learn that the most abundant source of sugar in the horses diet is grass. Smaller additions like molasses are often blamed for fizzy behaviour, but fresh spring grass consumed in large amounts can have a far greater impact on energy levels.Dengie recommend that horse owners should not overlook the impact of fresh spring grass on their horse or ponys sugar levels.Other ConsiderationsIts important to remember that feed isnt always to blame for fizzy behaviour. Other possible causes can include:Pain or discomfort from an injury, poorly fitting tack or dental problemsWeather conditionsStress or excitement in unfamiliar environmentsLimited exercise or prolonged stablingOf course, a horses natural temperament also plays a role some are simply more excitable, regardless of their diet!Fizzy and FatFor good doers who are sharp or fizzy, it can be very tempting to cut out the bucket feed entirely, in the hopes of both calming them down and promoting weight loss. However, UK forages are typically lacking in certain nutrients. For this reason, its advisable to feed a broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement alongside a low energy chopped fibre. This will help to keep sugar, starch and energy intake to a minimum, yet still supply a balanced diet to support the horses health and wellbeing. The use of a chopped fibre is also beneficial for promoting chew time which is important for digestive health and may also help to reduce stress.Ideal chopped fibre options from the Dengie range include Hi-Fi Molasses Free (2.5% sugar, 1.5% starch) and Meadow Lite with Herbs (3% sugar, 0.5% starch). {"mainImage":{"id":13213,"url":"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/redp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/11\/Good-Doer-fizzy_FB.jpg","size":"full"},"dots":[{"position":{"x":14,"y":68.616},"wcProduct":{"productId":null,"productName":"","productPermalink":"","productShortDescription":"","productFeaturedImage":{"url":"","size":"large"},"productStockStatus":"","productPrice":""},"customProduct":{"productName":"Dengie Hi-Fi Molasses Free","productPermalink":"https:\/\/www.redpostequestrian.co.uk\/horse-care\/feed-forage-bedding\/dengie-hi-fi-molasses-free--20kg__3087","productShortDescription":"","productFeaturedImage":{"url":"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/redp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/11\/dengie-hifi-molfree-1024x1024.jpg","size":"large","id":13248},"productPrice":"\u00a317.64"},"tooltip":{"direction":"row","style":{"position":"top","layout":"horizontal","width":"360px","height":"auto","background":{"hex":"#fff","rgb":{"r":255,"g":255,"b":255,"a":1}},"triangle":true},"containers":[{"type":"container","style":{"gridSize":"140px","padding":{"left":0,"top":0,"right":0,"bottom":0}},"blocks":[{"type":"media","source":"productFeaturedImage","options":{"size":"large"},"style":{"backgroundPosition":"center"}}]},{"type":"container","style":{"gridSize":"1fr","padding":{"left":16,"top":16,"right":16,"bottom":16}},"blocks":[{"type":"text","source":"productName","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":24,"fontWeight":600,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}},{"type":"text","source":"productShortDescription","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":16,"fontWeight":300,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}},{"type":"text","source":"productPrice","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":16,"fontWeight":300,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}}]}]},"style":{"pulsating":"always","opacity":1,"background":{"hex":"#d9e3f0","rgb":{"r":217,"g":227,"b":240,"a":1}},"size":"16px","borderWidth":"1px","borderColor":{"hex":"#fff","rgb":{"r":255,"g":255,"b":255,"a":1}}}},{"position":{"x":80,"y":71.103},"wcProduct":{"productId":null,"productName":"","productPermalink":"","productShortDescription":"","productFeaturedImage":{"url":"","size":"large"},"productStockStatus":"","productPrice":""},"customProduct":{"productName":"Dengie Meadow Lite with Herbs","productPermalink":"https:\/\/www.redpostequestrian.co.uk\/horse-care\/feed-forage-bedding\/dengie-meadow-lite-with-herbs--15kg__218631","productShortDescription":"","productFeaturedImage":{"url":"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/redp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/11\/dengie-meadowlite-1024x1024.jpg","size":"large","id":13250},"productPrice":"\u00a316.15"},"tooltip":{"direction":"row","style":{"position":"top","layout":"horizontal","width":"360px","height":"auto","background":{"hex":"#fff","rgb":{"r":255,"g":255,"b":255,"a":1}},"triangle":true},"containers":[{"type":"container","style":{"gridSize":"140px","padding":{"left":0,"top":0,"right":0,"bottom":0}},"blocks":[{"type":"media","source":"productFeaturedImage","options":{"size":"large"},"style":{"backgroundPosition":"center"}}]},{"type":"container","style":{"gridSize":"1fr","padding":{"left":16,"top":16,"right":16,"bottom":16}},"blocks":[{"type":"text","source":"productName","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":24,"fontWeight":600,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}},{"type":"text","source":"productShortDescription","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":16,"fontWeight":300,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}},{"type":"text","source":"productPrice","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":16,"fontWeight":300,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}}]}]},"style":{"pulsating":"always","opacity":1,"background":{"hex":"#d9e3f0","rgb":{"r":217,"g":227,"b":240,"a":1}},"size":"16px","borderWidth":"1px","borderColor":{"hex":"#fff","rgb":{"r":255,"g":255,"b":255,"a":1}}}}]} Good Doers who are fizzy or sharp will often benefit from being fed a low energy chopped fibre.Fizzy and ThinWhen it comes to feeding the underweight horse or pony, it can be difficult to know how to feed enough for your horse to gain weight, whilst still keeping them calm and level-headed. Traditional conditioning mixes or cubes are typically cereal-based with starch levels exceeding 25-30%, and such levels can often prove far too high for nervous or excitable types. While lower starch conditioning feeds are now available, these often contain 8-10% starch, which may still be too much for some individuals.Whats the alternative? For weight gain without the fizz, a good place to start is to choose a higher calorie fibre feed that contains the lowest levels of sugar and starch. Chopped or pelleted fibres usually dont contain any cereals or cereal co-products, keeping the starch levels as low as 2-3%.Alfa-A Oil is one of the highest calorie options in the Dengie range, providing 12.5 MJ/kg. This is comparable to many conditioning mixes but with around 10 times less starch. Other suitable options from the Dengie range include Alfa-A Molasses Free, Healthy Tummy and Cool, Condition & Shine. {"mainImage":{"id":13217,"url":"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/redp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/11\/Poor-Doer-fizzy_FB-1.jpg","size":"full"},"dots":[{"position":{"x":20,"y":50},"wcProduct":{"productId":null,"productName":"","productPermalink":"","productShortDescription":"","productFeaturedImage":{"url":"","size":"large"},"productStockStatus":"","productPrice":""},"customProduct":{"productName":"Dengie Alfa-A Oil","productPermalink":"https:\/\/www.redpostequestrian.co.uk\/horse-care\/feed-forage-bedding\/dengie-alfa-a-oil--20kg__3078","productShortDescription":"","productFeaturedImage":{"url":"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/redp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/11\/dengie-alfalfa-1024x1024.jpg","size":"large","id":13253},"productPrice":"\u00a318.79"},"tooltip":{"direction":"row","style":{"position":"top","layout":"horizontal","width":"360px","height":"auto","background":{"hex":"#fff","rgb":{"r":255,"g":255,"b":255,"a":1}},"triangle":true},"containers":[{"type":"container","style":{"gridSize":"140px","padding":{"left":0,"top":0,"right":0,"bottom":0}},"blocks":[{"type":"media","source":"productFeaturedImage","options":{"size":"large"},"style":{"backgroundPosition":"center"}}]},{"type":"container","style":{"gridSize":"1fr","padding":{"left":16,"top":16,"right":16,"bottom":16}},"blocks":[{"type":"text","source":"productName","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":24,"fontWeight":600,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}},{"type":"text","source":"productShortDescription","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":16,"fontWeight":300,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}},{"type":"text","source":"productPrice","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":16,"fontWeight":300,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}}]}]},"style":{"pulsating":"always","opacity":1,"background":{"hex":"#d9e3f0","rgb":{"r":217,"g":227,"b":240,"a":1}},"size":"16px","borderWidth":"1px","borderColor":{"hex":"#fff","rgb":{"r":255,"g":255,"b":255,"a":1}}}},{"position":{"x":82,"y":55},"wcProduct":{"productId":null,"productName":"","productPermalink":"","productShortDescription":"","productFeaturedImage":{"url":"","size":"large"},"productStockStatus":"","productPrice":""},"customProduct":{"productName":"Dengie Cool Condition and Shine","productPermalink":"https:\/\/www.redpostequestrian.co.uk\/horse-care\/feed-forage-bedding\/dengie-cool-condition-and-shine--20kg__192333","productShortDescription":"","productFeaturedImage":{"url":"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/redp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/11\/dengie-ccs-1024x1024.jpg","size":"large","id":13255},"productPrice":"\u00a319.99"},"tooltip":{"direction":"row","style":{"position":"top","layout":"horizontal","width":"360px","height":"auto","background":{"hex":"#fff","rgb":{"r":255,"g":255,"b":255,"a":1}},"triangle":true},"containers":[{"type":"container","style":{"gridSize":"140px","padding":{"left":0,"top":0,"right":0,"bottom":0}},"blocks":[{"type":"media","source":"productFeaturedImage","options":{"size":"large"},"style":{"backgroundPosition":"center"}}]},{"type":"container","style":{"gridSize":"1fr","padding":{"left":16,"top":16,"right":16,"bottom":16}},"blocks":[{"type":"text","source":"productName","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":24,"fontWeight":600,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}},{"type":"text","source":"productShortDescription","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":16,"fontWeight":300,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}},{"type":"text","source":"productPrice","options":[],"style":{"color":{"hex":"#000","rgb":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":1}},"fontSize":16,"fontWeight":300,"margin":{"left":0,"top":8,"right":0,"bottom":8}}}]}]},"style":{"pulsating":"always","opacity":1,"background":{"hex":"#d9e3f0","rgb":{"r":217,"g":227,"b":240,"a":1}},"size":"16px","borderWidth":"1px","borderColor":{"hex":"#fff","rgb":{"r":255,"g":255,"b":255,"a":1}}}}]} To keep condition on poor doers who can be fizzy or sharp, a higher calorie fibre feed that contains the lowest levels of sugar and starch can be a good place to start.Ive heard alfalfa makes horses fizzy is this true?Whilst alfalfa is naturally a good source of calories for the horse, it is very low in sugar and starch and so is less likely to increase fizzy or excitable behaviour. Like other plants, alfalfa does make sugar, but it cleverly stores it as starch in its roots the part that horses dont eat which makes it a much more appropriate option for horses who can be excitable. Alfalfa offers a good source of calories, but is naturally low in sugar and starch. In fact, a 2015 study from the University of Edinburgh showed that horses who were fed Dengie Alfa-A Molasses Free were less reactive to novel stimuli and had lower resting heart rates compared to horses fed the same amount of energy (calories) but from cereals (Bulmer et al., 2015). This provides further evidence that alfalfa can be a great alternative to cereals for horses needing to gain or maintain weight without the fizz!Discover Dengie Horse Feeds at Redpost EquestrianMore information on the different ingredients used in horse feeds can be found here.Contact the Dengie feedline for help with feeding the fizzy or lazy horse.
