Horse Sport Ireland (HSI), as the national equestrian federation, has been notified that athleteDarragh Kenny has been provisionally suspended by the Fdration Equestre Internationale (FEI), the international governing body for equestrian sport.The FEI has indicated that the provisional suspension relates to ahuman anti-doping matter involving a substance classified under Class S6 (Stimulants)on theWorld Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. Substances in this category may be found in certainprescribed medications used in the treatment of medical conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anaphylaxis, and cold and flu symptoms.This matter is being managed by theInternational Testing Agency (ITA)on behalf of the FEI. As the case remains ongoing,Horse Sport Ireland will not be making any further comment at this time.HSI remains fully committed to the principles of clean sport and fair play across all disciplines.Kenny released a statement this evening to address the matter, emphasising that he is fully cooperating with the FEI and the ITA. He said: I wish toaddress my current situation. Afterthe European Championships earlier this year, I was notified by the FEI of a positive result for a medication prohibited under anti-doping regulations.The medication in question is part of a prescribed treatment I have been taking under medical supervision for ADHD.As a result, the FEI has imposed a provisional suspension while the matter is being reviewed. British Equestrian is accepting a new round of applications for its coaching bursary, following success from previous cohorts. The scheme is designed to support those taking their first step in their coaching career or who want to develop their existing coaching skills, with the aim of enabling more participants to enjoy riding and horse care.The British Equestrian Coach Bursary Scheme is open to riding school staff and volunteers who want to get started with their coaching qualifications and grow the opportunities for people to enjoy riding, coaches from underrepresented populations or protected characteristics within our coaching workforce, and coaches who work with participants from underrepresented populations or with protected characteristics within our current equestrian community.Applicants can apply for up to fifty percent of the course and/or assessment costs for a number of different coaching qualifications offered by British Equestrians member bodies. These range from general riding qualifications, through to ones tailored for specific Olympic and non-Olympic disciplines within the equestrian sporting sector.Jasmine achieved her BHS Coaching4All qualification through the bursary in 2023, supporting her work in bringing equestrian opportunities to young people from underprivileged areas.Without funding from the bursary, I wouldnt have been able to complete the inclusive coaching course, she said. HSI were delighted to host the 2025 Grand Final of the Foal Championship and 3 & 4 YO Filly Loose Jumping on the 2nd of October, at Emerald Equestrian Centre, Co Kildare. The Foal Championship and Filly Loose jumping is funded under National Breeding Services, with thanks to the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine (DAFM), and delivered by Horse Sport Ireland. On the day, HSI welcomed the Irish Equine Centre on site to take samples from each foal/ horse at the final, to perform a faecal worm egg count (FWEC) test. The IEC also carried out saliva testing for tapeworm for each mature horse and were also available for to answer any questions breeders had about worming practices and management . This screening was supported and funded by DAFM.In total 41 animals were tested, and full reports were provided to each breeder/ owner. The full report, from the IEC, is now available to read. HSI & the IEC would like to emphasize the importance of proactive parasite management to all who keep equines. Do you know what to expect in the 10 minute box?Although the 10 minute box, or D-Box may just seem like a quick breather for horse and rider, its an essential part of Long Format Eventing. Cameron Beer talks through the aims of the 10 minute box and how to best prepare yourself and your horse for the Cross Country.Aims of the 10 Minute BoxWhile the 10 Minute Box may seem like nothing more than a brief pause for horse and rider, it plays a crucial role in Long Format Eventing. The main aims are to check that your horse is sound, fit, and ready to continue with the rest of the competition. Things like heart rate and temperature need to be monitored for the safety of the horse.Before you enter the box, a vet will be watching you finish Phase C in a trot so they can assess the soundness of your horse. Then, once the vet is confident that your horse is perfectly sound, they will check your horses heart rate. Theyll be monitoring this at regular intervals while you are in the 10 Minute Box, ensuring that it is decreasing over time.Your aims while in the 10 Minute Box should be to reduce your horses temperature, but not allow them to get cold. They may also need washing down if they have got sweaty during Phases A-C, and will need to keep moving in order to maintain joint suppleness and keep their adrenaline up. Getting fluid into your horse is also essential, and fresh, tepid water is advised at this stage.You should also be preparing yourself for the cross country. Rehydrating before the physical challenge of a cross country course is crucial. You may also need a top-up of energy, which can be found in snack bars and sports drinks.In the unfortunate case where you lose or break something during Phases A-C, the 10 Minute Box is the time to be replacing an overreach boot, swapping to fresh gloves, or even changing reins. Some competitors may prefer to ride without their Air Jacket for the first few phases, and can also use this time to pop their Air Jacket on before the Cross Country.Although rare, losing shoes can also occur during a Long Format Event. In this case there will be a farrier on hand, however they will only be able to put on one of your horses existing shoes, instead of shaping a new one.
