WWW.HORSEILLUSTRATED.COMHow to Read Horse Feed LabelsJust as you need a proper nutrition plan to be healthy, your horse also needs one to maintain his health. In order to do that, you need to know what you are feeding your horse, from grain and hay to supplements which means youll need to learn how to read horse feed labels.Nutrition labels are the key to knowing the amount of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients you are feeding your horse. Unknowingly feeding too littleor too muchcan be detrimental to your horses health. Since its important to know more about that small tab of paper for a healthier, happier horse, weve answered your top questions with input from two horse feed experts.Photo by MyNewHorse.com1. Where is the nutrition label located? The nutrition label on bagged feeds is typically sewn on to the bottom of the bag. Another location for the label may be on the back of the bag itself. If the feed or supplement is in another type of packaging, such as a bucket, the label information is right on the bucket or tub. It may be printed on the bucket, or a sticker may be applied.2. Do nutrition labels have regulations?Yes, there are certain things that need to be included on the label to help horse owners make the best decisions possible. The required items include:Name of product, manufacturer of product, location of manufacturer.Guaranteed analysis of feed or supplement. For horse feed, guarantees must include crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), calcium, phosphorus, copper, zinc, selenium, and vitamin A.Ingredients and nutrients are expressed as a minimum or maximum noted in the Guaranteed Analysis, and do not specify an exact amount.Directions for feeding must be included.Purpose that states who the product is for.An ingredient listing in order of inclusion, from most to least.3. Why is the label important? As horse owners, we like to compare feed tags; we want to know which feed might have more or less of a certain nutrient or ingredient. However, Mieke Holder, Ph.D., senior research scientist at Alltech, reminds horse owners that its important to also consider the amount of grain that you need to feed, which you can usually find printed on the back of the bag.Taking that into consideration, together with the concentration of nutrients listed, you get a much better idea of how much your horse will be getting from each nutrient, says Holder. Remember, more is not always better!4. How can horse owners better use the nutrition label?Experts urge owners to take a look at the ingredient list. The ingredient list will contain everything that is in the feed, so here you can see if it contains a yeast or enzyme or organic minerals that you may want in your feed, says Holder. Some owners have strong feelings about specific ingredients. For example, lets say corn is something you dont like your horse to eat, that will be an easy thing to look for to decide if the feed is for you or not.Due to regulations, some feed ingredients have to be listed in a particular way.Kristyn Sturken, a product manager at Sentinel Horse Nutrition, reminds owners that its important to feed by weight, not volume, which is noted on the label.A scoop of pellets weighs differently than a scoop of extruded feed or textured feed, she cautions. In addition, feeding recommendations and feeding rates should be used as a guideline and sometimes are in ranges. All horses are different and require different amounts of grain.5. Are there regulations in place for manufacturing feed?Yes. In terms of regulations and the manufacturing process, there are good manufacturing practices published by the Code of Federal Regulations. These are in place for all facilities that manufacture, process and package commercial animal feeds. These facilities are inspected to ensure that they comply, and samples of feeds are also taken during these inspections. These samples are then tested to determine if they meet the specifications printed on the feed label. There are different certifications manufacturing plants can obtain. For example, horses are very sensitive to ionophores, a class of antibiotic-like compounds that do not include drugs that are medically important for humans and can be found in beef cattle feed.Holder says its therefore preferred to have horse feed products manufactured in antibiotic/medication-free facilities. However, if unavoidable, multi-species production facilities that make medicated feeds need to have strict protocols in place to ensure absolute safety.6. What else should horse owners be aware of?There are many things you can learn about a product by studying the label, says Sturken. A fixed-ingredient formula uses a particular set of quality ingredients limited to a precise range to ensure the product always meets nutrient specifications while providing a consistent diet supporting healthy digestive function. In a fixed-ingredient formula, youll typically see specific ingredient names (alfalfa meal, oats, soybean hulls), ensuring your horse is getting consistent feed bag after bag. Least-cost formulas typically use non-specific grouped ingredient names (grain products, plant products, grain by-products), and the order of the ingredients tends to change.Other questions you should ask when reading the feed label:Does the feed incorporate specialty ingredients like prebiotics, probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, marine-sourced calcium, and other premium ingredients?Does the feed use complexed or chelated minerals that are more bioavailable? You can identify these organic sources of minerals that have been bonded to an amino acid by looking at the ingredients and looking for proteinates or amino acid complexes such as zinc amino acid complex. If you have any questions, dont hesitate to ask the people working at the feed store or contact the manufacturer. Discussing your nutritional plans for your horse with your veterinarian or nutritionist will help you move a step in the right direction for your horses health. WWW.HORSESPORTIRELAND.IESuper Swail masterful in MexicoCoyle also a five-star winner and World Cup runner-up with miracle horse FarrelConor Swail was the toast of San Miguel de Allende yesterday, winning both international classes, at five-star and two-star level to bring his tally of victories for the week in Mexico to three. Two of those were at five-star level and he completed the Grand Prix double into the bargain. The three wins were provided by different horses and a fourth bagged two podiums. It was utter domination. His close friend, fellow Ulsterman and former protg Daniel Coyle was in similar form in Upper Marlboro, bagging a five-star win as well as a pair of Grands Prix silver medals, with Shane Sweetnams third just behind his Olympic teammate in the World Cup class moving the Cork man to the top of the North American League.Swail brought a top team to Guanajuato and bagged his first Grand Prix in partnership with Clonterm Obolensky (ISH) on Saturday night Irish time, the duo recording the only double clear of the competition. They have competed at Nations Cup level and it seemed only a matter of time before their consistency would be translated to a victory of this nature. The 10-year-old, owned by Ollie Glancy and bred by Brian Duff, illustrated his scope and class to jump clear in the opening round of the 1.60m test.Only two other pairings joined them in the jump-off, with Swail and Obi (above) first to go. The experienced Darragh Cross man used that to his advantage, as he used the greys long stride and apart from one little rub in the second part of the combination, they were flawless and quick, posting a time of 43.78 seconds that was sure to ask significant questions of the remaining pair. They were questions neither John Perez Bohm (COL) with Lareusa S (eight faults) nor Sharn Wordley (NZL) with Brin DOr De Haute Melen Z (four faults) could answer, forced into errors in attempting to go quicker.Swail praised his horse later on his social media feed, though he had particular praise for his staff and owners.Thank you to Obi but a huge thank you to my team. Its such an understatement when I say none of this would be possible without you, said Swail after collecting the $1.5m first prize. He would conclude the show on Sunday with two victories, first providing the 1-2 in the five-star special two-phase class, taking the win on Glancys remarkably reliable Theo 160, who prevailed from his stablemate Casturano (Conall Murray).Theo is an absolute machine in speed classes, and was winning at international level for the 34th time and 17th in 1.50m competitions. Casturano is more accustomed to big jumping tests so his speed effort of 31.76 was notable indeed. And though that saw off the rest of the opposition, with Wordley again the best of the rest, this time with Champion League, there was no denying Theo (below after a previous victory, shared with the equally famous Ralphie), who shaved almost a full second off Stans best, stopping the timers in 30.81 to take the spoils. And Swail added a final cherry on top when guiding Nadal Hero & DB to success in the two-star Grand Prix, seeing off 54 other combinations and preventing a home victory, with another very quick double clear.Nadal has been a revelation this year and once again, with his astute rider steering him well, their jump-off round brooked little argument, as they clocked 37.78 for a second clear, to beat Paola Amilibia Puig (MEX) and Quinley by nine-tenths of a second. On Thursday, Swail accumulated a couple of strong results with Casturano, to give a hint, perhaps, of what was to come. They began with a fourth-place finish at the opening international class on Wednesday, after a nice double clear in the 1.45m two-phase that served as a lovely arm-up for bigger tests.Indeed, after a few weeks off, Swail was clearly anxious to blow out a few cobwebs on Stan and they were back to complete the podium in the 1.50m jump-off class, which had 43 contestants, again leaving all the fences intact twice and only a little more than half a second away from victory, which went to Mexicos Carlos Rodolfo Molina Gordillo, with Kansas Santa Rosa. The Co Down pilot was back on the podium on Friday with another cash collector, Nadal Hero & DB, third in the two-star 1.45m special two-phase class and rounded out the top five with another of his stars, Theo 160 after having a fence down in the 1.50m jump-off class to miss out on the tiebreaker. That pair would deliver when it counted at the end of the week. The five-star jumper division kicked off at the 2026 Washington International Horse Show, presented by MARS Equestrian, in ideal fashion for Coyle on Thursday, as the Olympian guided Farrel (Ariel Grange) to top spot in the Welcome Stake (below).A total of 11 qualified for the tiebreaker after Colm Quinns initial test and Farrels low centre of gravity proved ideal in the tight and twisty turns on his first indoor outing in many years. His electric time of 35.23 was more than a second clear of Israels Mark Bluman, with Landon de NyzeIt was a 23rd FEI ranking win for Farrel, the now 16-year-old that missed four years of action through injury, before a barely credible recovery that has allowed him to enjoy an Indian Summer.Coyle was understandably overjoyed by his success in a class he has previously won with another Grange-owned legend, his now-retired super mare, Legacy.Farrel is so handy in these small arenas, and we havent done indoors in a few years like this at the top level, so its nice to kick it off with a win, he acknowledged. Hes a real partner of mine, and we can go anywhere together. Most horses are a lot harder to turn, but with an old partner like this, he already knows if I lean one way, hes away before me. What makes you fast, especially in a small indoor like this is turning back to the fences. And I think tonight, from the third to the fourth jump, that was a real spot where I earned a lot of time.Theres only one way to attack this, and its from the beginning and hope I get away with it, he revealed of his plan. At least then it gives them something to challenge. Everything came up the way I wanted it to.Coyle revealed that winning the FEI Jumping World Cup was a major target and the pair went close to securing the Presidents Cup, with the Co Derry athlete feeling like he didnt make the best of the opportunity, albeit they did come away with the silver medal. This was five and a half years after Farrel won a World Cup leg in Ocala. The pair, who first joined forces when the gelding was seven, had won a World Cup before that, in Langley, in 2019.As third pair in the definitive round (above), they made it very interesting with a time of 37.13 thanks to some breathtaking turns but Coyle felt they could have done better and he was proved correct, as Lillie Keenan and Kick On shaved of 0.44 seconds and kept the rails in place to emerge triumphant. My plan didnt go according to plan at all, admitted Coyle. Already from the third to fourth jump, I tried to leave in seven strides and didnt make it, same as Lillie, but also to the last fence. Farrel was very, very handy and very, very fast. I was still quite fast, but I knew I left the door open a little bit.It was not long after winning in Ocala that Farrel developed a cyst on his stifle, which shuffled him into a premature retirement. Grange, keen for the gelding to live out his life in comfort, opted for him to have surgery and gradually, the diminutive, spirited winner told them he wasnt done yet. Having won regularly in the past year or so, and also been part of Irelands Aga Khan Cup runner-up team at the RDS this year, he is as competitive as ever.He loves the sport more than people. I thought if I could get him back to doing some speed classes, it would be a miracle, but to have him at the top of the sport is unbelievable. Im really, really lucky to have him. With a quick trip after Keenan, Sweetnam slotted into third place with a time of 38.09 seconds on Pia Maria H (above), owned by Sweetnam and Seabrook LLC.Even though shes 11, shes a green 11, and she didnt have the kind of mileage that shes gotten this summer, said Sweetnam of. In her development, shes gotten better and better all year, and shes jumped in places like Aachen and Dublin. This is probably the first time doing indoors ever in her life, and third in the World Cup is pretty good. I think were really making good steps for her, and Im looking forward to the future.I think were really making good steps for her and looking toward the future. Shes a real fighter. At times, shes fighting against you, but in the ring, shes definitely fighting for youso were just trying to meet halfway and get some good results.Sweetnam assumed the lead in the North American League standings after three legs with 32 points. Beat Mndli (SUI) sits second with 25 points, followed by McLain Ward (USA), who has 24 points.Coyle partnered his Lothlorien patrons very promising eight-year-old Nord Face to second in the two-star Grand Prix also. There was no matching the 32.22 registered by JJ Torano (USA) with I Am Inge in the jump-off but a fantastic double clear and a speed time of 33.37 was an impressive return. The Longines Global Champions Tour moved to Cairo and on Friday, Cian OConnor and Denis Lynch both made the top five in the days feature 1.55m jump-off class, the former finishing closest to the medals in fourth with Kentucky TN (Karlswood Partners), with his long-time Ireland teammate in his slipstream with Mr. Newman (Parco Sport Horses).Only five combinations went clear first time and Lynch, from Tipperary, was posted for fifth place still 13,600 in prize money as Mr. Newman had a rail down. OConnor, the Co Kildare native based for a long time in Co Meath, was just 0.15 seconds shy of Daniel Deusser in third when Kentucky again was blemish-free over the jumps, while victory went to Luxembourgs Victor Bettendorf, with Encore Toi du Linon. On Saturday, Bertram Allen grabbed the bronze ribbon in the 1.45m speed class, Aloga Stables impressive nine-year-old Huricane de Champloue zipping around the ring in 65.88.It was a strong effort by the stallion son of Cornet Obolensky and his Wexford connections will have been very pleased to finish so strongly, with victory going to Germanys Max Weishaupt, with Cosmo von Imhoff. The Andaluca October Tour kicked off In Vejer de la Frontera and four-star fare began with Frano Derwin, from Co Westmeath, guiding his own Parvati Aeg to fourth. The recent winners were fast and flawless in Thursdays 1.50m speed class In the Don Antonio Grass Arena, only eight-hundredths of a second short of the bronze medal and 0.14 shy of second, in a class won comfortably by more than three seconds by Germanys David Will with the eight-year-old gelding DSP King George. On Sunday, Co Down athlete Alex Finney guided Newberry Cleverleaf, owned by her mother Jean, to third in the 1.45m speed class, doing fantastically at this level. The duo were magnificent over the 16 jumping efforts and took some tight turns into the bargain, 69.50 won by Rogier Linssen (NED) and Moneypenny in the Hickstead Grass Arena. At the two-star show in Tryon, North Carolina, Kilkenny rider Richie Moloney and Daisycutter (Equinimity) secured top honours in Fridays 1.45m Speed Stake, being one of only two pairings to manage to leave all the obstacles intact and of those, being almost five seconds quicker, stopping the clock in 74.07 to cruise to victory.Sentower Park in Belgium transitioned to indoor fare last week and Michael Duffy posted an impressive double clear with Camina Z (Sportpferde Kuck Gb R) to garner runner-up prize money in the Grand Prix at the two-star show on Sunday, guiding the nine-year-old to a time of 38.30 in the decisive round. That was enough to see off four of the other five returning combos, but finding just one too good in Wilm Vermeir (BEL) and Jonkheer VanT Veldhoven. On Sunday In Lige, a pair of Duffys fellow Galwegians filled two of the three podium berths in two-star Grand Prix.Loughreas Daniel McAlinden and Count Mein (Jersey Kuijpers & Sea Horse) were third with a double clear and jump-off time of 37.01 but Athenry pilot Thomas OBrien and Vario 7 (Yvette OBrien) were much quicker, stopping the clock in 34.90, which was just a quarter of a second off the time set by Belgiums Lauranne Spits, with Sjefke van dAbelendreef.BREEDINGCLONTERM OBOLENSKY (ISH) 2016 stallion by Cornet Obolensky (BWP) out of She Has The Lux (ISH) by Lux Z (HANN). WWW.PREMIEREQUINE.CO.UKHow to Choose a Horse Exercise Sheet for WinterPremier Equine / Winter riding guide Match the sheet to the ride. Rain protection, fleece warmth and the right cut. Choose an exercise sheet around your horse, your tack and the conditions ahead. Compare the PE designs Vellus Fleece Exercise Sheet in Navy/White, shown fitted around the saddle. In this guideStart hereCompare designsChoose the cutSizing and fitYour riding routineQuestions The useful starting point How do you choose a horse exercise sheet? Choose the weather protection and insulation first. Then check the cut and how it fits with your saddle. An exercise sheet covers the horses hindquarters during exercise. Whether your horse benefits from one depends on their coat and clipping, the conditions and the work you plan to do. For wet rides, look for a stated waterproof construction. For cooler, dry conditions, consider fleece where extra warmth is appropriate. Review the choice as your horse warms up. Four checks before you choose Does your horse need extra coverage? Is rain protection part of the job?Which cut works with your tack? Can you check and adjust it during work? 01 / Compare the designsWhich PE exercise sheet suits your ride? A waterproof outer, a fleece fabric and a quarter-sheet cut describe different features. Compare the complete design, including its coverage and attachments. Waterproof outer / Bonded liningStratus Exercise Sheet The Stratus combines a 1200D diamond-ripstop outer with a bonded fleece lining. Its waterproof, breathable construction makes it an option when rain protection and added warmth are both needed. It fits around the saddle and can sit over or under the saddle flaps. A double-locking Velcro closure and clip-on tail strap secure the design; reflective detailing runs along the sides and tail flap. Consider forCold or wet hacking and schooling, where your horse needs the coverage. Explore Stratus Polar fleece / Around-saddle cutVellus Exercise Sheet Made from 520g anti-pilling polar fleece, the Vellus Exercise Sheet provides an insulating layer for cooler conditions. Its 50cm saddle cut-out allows it to sit around most saddle shapes. A pull tab helps you handle the double-locking Velcro closure, while an adjustable clip-on tail strap adds stability. This is a fleece design; choose a model with a stated waterproof outer when rain protection is required. Consider forDry warm-ups, cool-downs and cooler-weather riding when extra warmth is appropriate. Explore Vellus Polar fleece / Cut-away shapeVellus Quarter Sheet The Vellus Quarter Sheet uses the same specified 520g anti-pilling polar fleece, with a cut-away shape that reduces fabric beneath the riders leg. Its adjustable fastening straps attach via the saddles girth straps or stirrup leather keepers. It can also be secured to a lunging roller. Check the instructions for your exact tack arrangement. Consider forRidden work or lunging where this cut and attachment arrangement suit your set-up. Explore the quarter sheet Another option for hackingReflective Exercise Sheet This design pairs a waterproof, breathable 600D polyester outer with a bonded polar-fleece lining. Fluorescent yellow fabric, 3M reflective panels and reflective piping add a visibility feature to its weather protection. Its wrap-around shape fastens with double-locking Velcro and an adjustable clip-on tail strap. For the wider choice of horse and rider visibility equipment, read our reflective riding equipment guide. View the Reflective Exercise Sheet 02 / Fabric and shapeExercise sheet or quarter sheet: what changes? The names are sometimes used interchangeably. Look at the actual cut and fastening system. Within the Vellus range, the Exercise Sheet sits around the saddle, while the Quarter Sheet has cut-away shaping and attachment straps. For either design, check the space around your saddle and beneath your leg. Fabric should sit smoothly without interfering with your normal position or the operation of your tack. The Vellus Quarter Sheet uses adjustable fastening straps. Check where they attach on your own tack. A waterproof outer can be combined with a fleece lining, as on the Reflective Exercise Sheet. Read the whole specification. Compare the stated fabric, lining and intended use. A fleece specification and the fill weight of a turnout rug describe different constructions, so matching gram figures alone will not tell you how two products will feel in use. 03 / Measure, then fitHow do you measure for a PE exercise sheet? Use the guide linked to the exact product you are buying. PEs current guide for the Stratus, Vellus Exercise Sheet and Reflective Exercise Sheet uses two measurements: A / Sheet lengthMeasure from the wither to the start of the tail, following the PE guide. B / Back lengthMeasure from behind the saddle to the tail. Check this with the saddle you intend to use. PE exercise-sheet measurements. All figures are approximate and given in centimetres. It has a different cut and its own size options. Use the guidance for that product. If you are unsure, contact PE with your horses measurements and tack details before ordering. Check the coverageTry the sheet with the intended saddle. Check that the quarters are covered and the fabric sits evenly. Use the correct attachmentsFollow the instructions for that model. Check the closure, fastening straps and any tail strap before use. Check saddle and leg clearanceMake sure the cut works around your saddle and leaves your normal leg position clear. Recheck after movementCheck for shifting, pulling or bunching after your horse moves. Adjust the fit before continuing. For an independent view of the Stratus in use, see Your Horses exercise-sheet comparison, published on 11 October 2026. It includes the testers observations on fit and weather protection. 04 / Plan around the workThree everyday riding situations A wet hackIf your horse needs coverage in rain, compare the waterproof Stratus and Reflective designs. Include the lining, fit and horses workload in the decision. A dry schooling sessionWhere additional warmth is appropriate, compare the Vellus cuts for the warm-up. Reassess the need for coverage as your horse works harder. Ridden work and lungingThe Vellus Quarter Sheet can attach to a saddle or lunging roller. Check each attachment arrangement separately when moving between the two. Review during the rideCheck your horses comfort as conditions and effort change. Sweating beneath the sheet or signs of excessive warmth mean the choice needs reassessing. Avoid choosing coverage from the air temperature alone. Care between ridesThe featured PE products specify machine washing at 30C and natural drying. Follow your own care label, allow the sheet to dry fully and check its fastenings before the next use. 05 / Before you chooseHorse exercise sheet questions Are fleece exercise sheets waterproof?Check the stated construction. The Vellus designs featured here are polar-fleece sheets. For rain protection, choose a sheet with a specified waterproof outer, such as Stratus or the Reflective Exercise Sheet. Can I use my horses turnout rug or liner for riding?Choose a sheet designed for exercise and suitable for your tack. Turnout rugs and liners have different cuts and fastening arrangements. Our horse rug liner guide explains layering under compatible outer rugs. Should an exercise sheet stay on for the whole ride?Review the horse, conditions and workload throughout the session. Coverage that suits the start of a ride may need adjusting or removing as your horse warms up. Can I use a Vellus Quarter Sheet for lunging?Yes. The Vellus Quarter Sheet is designed to attach to a lunging roller as well as suitable saddle attachments. Follow the product instructions and check that it is secure and correctly positioned before work. When would I choose a cooler rug instead?A cooler is designed for post-exercise moisture management where the horse needs coverage while drying. Choose around the horses condition and the setting.
