Irish shine in in Europe and North America
Another fantastic week for Irish show jumping concluded with five-star victories for Conor Swail, Frano Derwin, Ciaran Nallon and Daniel Coyle, while Denis Lynch, Mikey Pender and Bertram Allen provided four clear rounds between them the latter duo with Irish Sport Horses to propel their team New York Empire to the top spot in the Rome leg of the Longines Global Champions League.Darragh Kenny, Andrew Hodgins and David Simpson posted three-star successes and Swail added to his tally with a two-star success as the scintillating run of form by Irish riders continued from the week before. It was fitting that a team bearing the Empire moniker would prevail in Rome as the Longines Global Champions League advances towards its endgame. The Eternal City played host to the third-last leg of the lucrative series and just like the Big Apple itself, New York was propelled to top dog status by the Irish.Lynch, Pender and Allen were flawless on Saturday, the former supplying two of the clear rounds and his younger partners delivering in kind to streak to glory from series leaders Riesenbeck International. In the first speed class, Pender and Lynch (above) set the benchmark. Lynch and Ping Pong van de Lentamel (European Youngsters), the standout skewbald who had won a Riesenbeck Grand Prix before joining the Tipperary town natives stable in July, cruised to a clear before Pender followed with his homebred Irish Sport Horse Madgeslane Louis (Pender Sport Horses). The Castledermot man finished just ahead of his teammate individually, by virtue of a time of 71.87, as they rocketed to the top of the table. The top 10 teams returned for the second speed class and Lynch switched conveyances. Chicago (Parco Sport Horses) proved up to the task with an unerring round. It meant that Bertram Allen (above) knew exactly what was needed when leaving the pocket with Irish Sport Horse Pacino Amiro (Aloga Stables), bred in Donegal by Simon Scott. A clear and victory was theirs. It was never in doubt and the celebrations afterwards were raucous among Georgina Bloombergs team.As a team we agreed that it was our goal for the season (to win), and we are absolutely delighted that we are heading along the right path, said Lynch. I must say thanks to my teammates, all our horses and staff, and of course a big thanks again to our team owner, Georgina Bloomberg, for her continued trust in the team. What a great day for New York Empire, Allen added. Winning in Rome is always special, but to do it with four clear rounds makes it even better. The whole team has done an incredible job, and Denis and Michael really set us up perfectly in the first round, so I knew I just had to go in and finish the job.Pacino Amiro jumped brilliantly, and its a fantastic feeling to get this result for Georgina and everyone involved. With just two stages left, these points are really valuable. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into Cairo and finish the season on a high.New York lie in third overall but with the penultimate leg taking place in Cairo, Riesenbeck are clear favourites to take overall honours. That would be tremendous for team member Ciaran Nallon, who has contributed to their current standings, although he was not on duty for the squad this week.He was participating on an individual basis, however, and illustrated his talent once more on Sunday morning, when triumphant in the 1.45m speed class with Christians Carado (Beerbaum Stables). The Ballymacredmond jockey had the advantage of being the second-last into the ring, and had also had an earlier run with Inglesias D.V. (EARL Global Dreams Stables & Jerome Lassime) and he used all the information gleaned to make light of the 14 jumps and screech past the target of 59.83 set by Sanne Thijssen (NED) and Farah Z, stopping the timers in 58.67 for a comfortable success.Harry Allen also had a good week in Rome, guiding Edison de Hus (Aloga Stables) to a brilliant third on Friday in the GCL Individual Competition, a qualifier for the LGCT Grand Prix.A 1.60m speed class, it demanded plenty in terms of jumping as well as pace, and the 12-year-old gelding was up to the task, along with his Enniscorthy-born pilot.Only seven combinations went clear and the bronze in 73.46, with victory going to USAs Kristen Vanderveen and Bull Runs Jireh, who stopped the clock in 69.08.The pair would also go top five in in the second speed class of the League, finishing just ahead of Allens older brother, Bertram. The show finished with Lynch and Ping Pong placing fifth in the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Roma, won by series leader, Abdel Sad (BEL) with Wathnan Quaker Brimbelles Z.Lynch and his 11-year-old were the seventh and last clear, with Ping Pong making use of his long stride while clearly enjoying himself with his ears pricked. And for most of the jump-off, it looked like victory might be theirs, as they were ahead on the splits but had the penultimate fence down with the faintest of rubs by the near-hind doing the damage. Still, we have seen enough to be excited about this pairing at elite level.Lynch lies in fourth place overall in the individual standings following this result. In Oslo, where the Longines FEI Jumping World Cups Western European League opened, Frano Derwin and Mark McAuley chased home Koen Vereecke (BEL) and Merryweather Vt Leeuwerikenhof in Fridays 1.50m class against the clock. The winning clear in 62.50 was just three-tenths of a second faster than what Derwin and the Knightfield Stud-bred Irish Sport Horse he owns himself, Flexi K recorded.McAuley, with Larc En Ciel Z (Yannick Jorand) continued their consistency of recent weeks right on Derwins coattails, stopping the timers in 62.97.On Saturday, Derwin went one step better as he joined forces with his own 11-year-old mare Parvati AEG to swoop in the Agria Trophy as the last pairing in and leave an elite field gasping with a statement victory.Kevin Staut (FRA) held the lead in the 1.45m jump-off class, with a second clear round of 38.22, just a hundredth of a second quicker than the marquee pairing of Henrick von Eckermann (SWE) and Glamour Girl. Thibeu Spits (BEL) and Marcus Ehning (GER) were just behind them after eight of the nine combos had returned. In the end, Parvati and her Athlone pilot produced a round that left absolutely no doubt, clear in 36.71.Im very happy with how the two horses are jumping, Derwin told Horse Sport Ireland. Flexi was very good in the Grand Prix qualifier. I was really happy with him and it was good to be second.Parvati was very good in the 1.45 jump-off class. I was really happy with her. It was a quick enough jump-off. I was last to go so it was good to be able to know what I had to do and it was great to win.Conor Swail and Casturano (above) have been knocking out strong results through the summer and into the autumn, and the highest rated horse at Club Hipico Coapexpan in Mexico delivered once more on Thursday.Stan had finished runner-up at World Cup level the previous week but helped Swail top the podium in this 1.55m jump-off class. They were fifth of 32 into the arena and the first of eight combinations to clear the 16 jumps. That meant they would act as pathfinders for the rest in the tiebreaker but it transpired that as they blitzed to a clear in 41.24 over the eight-jump speed test, despite a slight stumble, they put such heat on the opposition that they would not be overcome. On Friday, Swail added to his tally with Nadal Hero & DB, who has been hoovering two-stars in the last few months and did it again, winning the two-star 1.45m two-phase class by almost a second, with a clear in 33.30.And the Darragh Cross native almost rounded off the week with a third triumph, when fourth with Theo 160 in Sundays 1.50m two-phase class.Theo is fantastic in these types of competitions and it was no surprise to see him record the fastest time by some distance, but a rail down in the power phase of the event cost the duo another victory.Meanwhile, Americas Major League Show Jumping series continue and Daniel Coyle and Calippo 57 (Ariel Grange) maintained their spectacular run of form with further success in Amenia. The duo were by far the quickest in winning the MLSJ Individual Round with a clear in 65.09, to score by 2.32 seconds from Roadrunners teammate, Erynn Ballard (CAN), on Genius de Rance in New Yorks Hudson Valley.Neither of the first two were selected in the MLSJ Team Class, not that it mattered overall as their trio, which included Shane Sweetnam with Pia Maria H (Seabrook & Sweetnam), jumped clear. The Castlemagner athlete and his mare repeated the trick, as did Kaitlin Campbell, with Karius, but unfortunately for them, in the gold medal jump-off, McLain Ward and First Lady had two rails down to add six seconds to their time, meaning they had to settle for runners-up.There was an Irish involvement on Trelawney Trailblazers winning team, however, as Rincoola Milsean, bred in Co Longford by Harold McGahern, provided a double clear under Charlotte Jacobs (USA).Zero K (above) lived up to her name, with two perfect rounds to prevail in Thursdays Welcome Stakes at the three-star show in Tryon. Though hearts fluttered with a rub on the tricky final obstacle in the first round, it was the only moment of concern as the mare glided around the ring. The 12-year-old possesses gears to go with her jumping prowess and the other nine combos could not get close to her 35.23 seconds in the decisive round, a mark that was more than two seconds quicker than that recorded by runner-up Ali Wolff (USA) and Hesperide du Breuil. At the Horse of the Year Show in Birmingham, Trevor Breen was just a half-second off victory in the Rees Family Cup, in the Andrews Bowen International Arena, guiding Konrad Obolensky (Heather & Ian Black) to a double clear on Saturday. But the day ended with the Tricolour being lifted aloft, as Andrew Hodgins shared Puissance honours with the incomparable Rachael Proudley, last seen on Irish shores winning the RDS Puissance in a Mayo jersey on Easy Boy De Laubry Z (below). This was a seventh straight puissance win for Proudley, which puts the endeavours of Hodgins and Shanaclough Luichew (John Glynn), bred by Jill Twomey, mother of Irish athlete Billy, in Monkstown, Co Cork. The Tipperary rider and his partner, joined Proudley and Easy Boy as the only combinations to reach round five, having arrived there by clearing 2.13 metres, with the final height rising to 2.18 metres, or seven feet and two inches. They bowed out together in front of a crowd that packed the Andrews Bowen International Arena to its rafters. My horses heart is completely in the right place, said Hodgins. Sometimes he can be become too brave, but you couldnt but love him. He gives you everything.I think I have slept about four hours in the last two days. I cant sleep, and I dont think Im going to sleep tonight, When you actually get on the horses back and you get going and focus, that is the best thing. It is just about trying to keep as calm as possible, and trying to keep everything as controlled as you can. It is a bit more difficult at times than I would like it to be, but he is who he is, and I love the horse.Derrys David Simpson shared third on Cindy RS (Floris Decker) but the pair returned on Sunday to win the Six-Bar class. The competition saw six obstacles in a row that are raised in height after each of a maximum five rounds, with Simpson and Cindy the only duo to jump clear in every round. There was also three-star competition in Oliva and Lt Raphael Lee and the Alfie Hillen-bred ISH Derrycush (Minister for Defence) followed up their podium of last week with a runner-up finish in a Grand Prix qualifier, with Lt Ruari Clarke and the Richard Fitzgerald-bred Bonmahon Beach (Minister For Defence) just behind.Lee, from Headford, added another silver medal on another ISH, Killossery Kilshane (Minister For Defence) bred in Dublin by Frank and Laura Glynn in Saturdays jump-off class, missing out by the very minimum margin, one-hundredth of a second, to Lars Kersten (NED) with Cascalino 7.BREEDINGPACINO AMIRO (ISH) 2012 gelding by Pacino (BWP) out of Carnone Dancing Queen (ISH) by NC Amiro (AES).
