Ireland secures bronze at FEI Eventing Nations Cup Final and seventh in Barcelona
Ireland claimed a superb bronze medal at the inaugural FEI Eventing Nations Cup Final in Military Boekelo-Enschede in the Netherlands today, with three Irish combinations finishing inside the individual top 20.Ireland also finished seventh at the Longines League of Nations Final in Barcelona, with Cian OConnor and Chatolinue PS producing an outstanding double clear.Sam Griffiths Eventing team finished third on a final team score of 97.5 penalties at Boekelo, behind winners Great Britain on 84.4 and Germany on 87.0, in the first-ever standalone Final of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup.The Irish team produced a strong performance across all three phases, moving from fifth after dressage to fourth following cross-country before securing the bronze medal with a solid performance in the final show jumping phase.Leading the Irish challenge was Susie Berry, who produced an outstanding performance with Strangford, finishing in sixth place individually on 29.6 penalties.Berry and Strangford had started the competition with a dressage score of 28.0 before adding just 1.2 cross-country time penalties and 0.4 jumping penalties to finish on 29.6. Their performance saw them climb from 17th after dressage to ninth after cross-country and ultimately sixth in the final individual standings.Berry said she was delighted with Strangfords performance on his four-star debut.Im over the moon with Strangfords performance in his first 4* long to help Team Ireland to a third-place finish in the Nations Cup Final.Hes only nine years old, so its such an exciting start to his four-star career. Im still getting to know him and theres so much more to come in the future.A lot of the credit needs to go to Steven Smith for doing such a wonderful job producing him to this level; its made my job very easy. And a big thank you to the Wilkinsons for trusting me to pilot such an incredible horse.Elizabeth Power and Dassett Fortune also delivered an excellent result, finishing 16th individually on 33.5 penalties. The pair produced a fault-free cross-country round and followed it with a clear show jumping round, improving from 59th after dressage to 26th after cross-country before completing the competition inside the top 20.Padraig McCarthy and Kilroe Tiger completed the Irish top-20 trio, finishing 19th individually on 34.4 penalties. They added no jumping faults on cross-country before picking up four jumping penalties in the final phase.The Irish team performance was rounded out by Godfrey Gibbons and Kilnamac Kasu, who had started the competition strongly with a dressage score of 30.2 before being eliminated during cross-country.Ireland also recorded a seventh-place finish at the Longines League of Nations Final in Barcelona, rounding off a significant weekend for Irish High Performance equestrian sport.The Irish team of OConnor, Trevor Breen, Denis Lynch and Billy Twomey, led by Horse Sport Ireland High Performance Jumping Manager Jessica Kurten, dug in at the prestigious season-ending final, with the standout moment coming from OConnor and Chatolinue PS, who produced an outstanding double clear across the two rounds.OConnor and Chatolinue PS were one of the highlights of the Irish performance, jumping two flawless rounds over the demanding 1.60m tracks. Breen and Highland President also delivered two consistent performances, finishing each round with just four faults.Lynch and Vistogrand had four faults in the opening round before adding eight faults in round two, while Twomey and Ace of Hearts Z added four faults in the first round.
