Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) is pleased to announce the publication of the first Irish Sport Horse Report, providing a data-led overview of the Irish Sport Horse population. Prepared by geneticist, Dr. Jennifer Doyle, this report supports the delivery of Horse Sport Irelands Strategic Plan, Priority Two: Optimise genetics, genomic insight and performance data to strengthen breeding excellence, highlighting continued progress in the application of genomic and data-driven tools to support sustainable breeding and selection decisions.The breeding objective of the Irish Sport Horse Studbook is the continual improvement of a sound, athletic and rideable horse with good movement, temperament and longevity, capable of excelling in the Olympic disciplines of show jumping and eventing. An objective Irish Sport Horse breeders continually meet with 2,263 ISH horses registered with the FEI to compete in international competitions by the end of July. The majority of these horses are registered as eventers or showjumpers while some ISH are also competing in high levels of dressage, para dressage, driving and vaulting.While the number of foals born per year appears lower in recent years, these figures are expected to increase as late registrations continue to occur.
