Derwin completes clean sweep for Irish athletes at new-look Laya ArenaJordan Coyle bagged a big five-star double on the opening day of the Gallagher Dublin Horse Show and it was a stunning start for Irish equestrians, with Frano Derwin securing the days opening international class of the week in the brand new Laya Arena at the RDS.Coyle recorded a brace of victories in the first two days of the 2025 renewal, but to supply two of the days three renditions of Amhrn na bhFiann as the wraps were taken off the new-look show jumping stadium in Ballsbridge today must have been very special indeed for the New York-based Derry pilot.After missing the last three months of 2025 with a broken leg, Coyle has been building momentum this season and his team of Elan Farm horses appear to have been tuned to the minute to perform on his return to familiar terrain.A list of 55 horse-and-rider combinations signed up for the days feature, the Sport Ireland Classic this afternoon and the 1.55m speed class concluded with Coyle and King Kannan GP (Elan Farm) leading an Irish 1-2-3 (main photo and below).Cork rider, Billy Twomey made much of the early running with his own Ace Of Hearts Z, going clear in 68.47. That held the lead for quite a while and in the end, was enough for fifth.The only non-Irish athlete in the top seven was Jrn Sprehe (GER), who guided Toys to fourth. Mikey Pender and Conor Swail were sixth and seventh respectively on Irish Sport Horses Madgeslane Louis, who Pender owns and bred himself, and Clonterm Obolensky (Oliver Glancy), bred by Brian Duff.Coyle and King Kannan were the 40th pairing into the ring and with the Ardmore native seeking improvements wherever the opportunities presented themselves, and his 11-year-old chestnut gelding responding magnificently, they vaulted to the top of the standings with a clear round in 65.49 seconds.Shane Sweetnam followed soon after, with Pia Maria H (Seabrook & Sweetnam), and the Cork Olympian elicited a strong effort from his 11-year-old mare but they had to settle for second with a time of 66.97.The podium was completed by Tipperarys Tom Wachman and Do It Easy (Coolmore Showjumping), who registered a time of 67.99. It was a second podium finish of the day for the Goolds Cross show jumper.Frano Derwin and Parvati AEG on the way to victory in the opening international class of the new-look Laya Arena (Photos: Sportfot)It was Derwin that got proceedings under way in dream fashion early this morning in the Speed Stakes sponsored by Heathman Farm, piloting his own Parvati AEG to a comfortable victory over Wachman and Oboras Laura (Coolmore Showjumping) by virtue of a clear in 54.21 seconds.A total of 41 pairings were in the pocket for the 1.45m speed class, with Wachman setting the early standard as just the seventh into the arena with his horse (below).They went clear in 56.40 and that was a mark that survived nine more combinations before Derwin arrived on his 11-year-old mare by Arezzo VDL.It was evident from the outset that the Athlone native was dialled in on going very quick, not just going another gear but turning on a sixpence and removing strides.None of it was a problem to Parvati AEG and with all the jumps intact when they stopped the timers on 54.21, they had the lead.The calibre of the round was emphasised, not just by the margin, but by the fact that with more than half the field still to enter the arena, Wachmans time was not bettered and he garnered the silver medal, with Robin Lesqueren (FRA) and Galax Du Rouet third.Twomey was fourth with the nine-year-old Irish Sport Horse Corrindubh Brother In Arms (John Chadwick), bred by Noel Ruane, while Daniel Coyle was next best of the home contingent in seventh, on board VDL Mourinho (Ariel Grange).The mare is in great form, said Derwin afterwards of Parvati (above). She won a 1.50 Grand Prix a week ago in Tattersalls. She jumped great today. I was delighted with her and its great to win the first class here, with the new stand. It was very cool.I thought today was quick enough. It wasnt over-fast. But you had to be neat everywhere and on the ball a bit I thought, to be in the top couple. So I am very happy to win obviously and very happy with the horse.Coyle and Cordiamo (Elan Farm) had 37 other combinations to get the better of in the Laya Arena Stakes, another 1.45m speed class. Clear rounds were not a problem there were 23 and the winners younger brother Daniel also kept all the rails intact on the brilliant Farrel (Ariel Grange) but with opening of the 16-year-olds pipes his priority ahead of bigger targets, the duo actually managed to register a time fault.Swiss rider Anthony Bourquard took the lead with Flanagan Semilly, a little more than a third of the way into the competition, setting a target of 60.49.That proved beyond everyone else, with Irelands former European Championship-winning chef dequipe, Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) the closest on Giorgio DEllipse.When Coyle and his 10-year-old chestnut gelding (above) entered the fray, there were just five contestants remaining and while the likes of Laura Kraut (USA), Irelands Max Wachman and Nicola Philippaerts (BEL) were among them, it was beginning to look like Bourquard had squeeze all there was from the track.None of that trio could improve upon the required mark but for Coyle and Cordiamo, it was ridiculously easy, the duo scorching around in 55.84 while leaving all the obstacles intact to take the spoils, by more than four seconds.Twomey and Toyger (Catherine OConnor) crept just inside the top ten, the Cork pilot and his 14-year-old gelding stopping the clock in 64.68 for ninth.BREEDINGMADGESLANE LOUIS (ISH) 2017 ch gelding by Luidam (KWPN) out of Madges Lane Karol (ISH) by Obos Quality 004 (OLDBG).
