Horse Sport Ireland Equine Influenza Advisory
Horse Sport Ireland wishes to remind owners, breeders and stakeholders to remain vigilant following increased awareness of equine influenza activity circulating within the sport horse population, including cases associated with recent horse movements from Ireland into Europe.Equine influenza is a highly contagious viral respiratory disease affecting horses, donkeys and ponies, with rapid transmission through close contact, respiratory droplets, and contaminated equipment or clothing. The disease is known to spread more rapidly where horses mix, travel or are newly introduced to premises without relevant quarantine.Clinical signs can include fever, nasal discharge, coughing, depression and reduced appetite, typically appearing within 1 3 days of infection. All horse owners/keepers/breeders are strongly advised to: Ensure vaccinations are up to date and recorded in accordance with best practice Isolate and monitor new arrivals for an appropriate period before introduction Observe horses closely for signs of respiratory illness Seek veterinary advice promptly where concerns ariseVaccination and robust biosecurity measures remain the most effective tools in reducing the spread of equine influenza and protecting the wider equine population. While not directly related to equine influenza, stakeholders who wish to review biosecurity practices within their yards may also avail of the subsidised Irish Equine Centre (IEC) environmental testing scheme, available though the below link: https://forms.horsesportireland.ie/260352360766861Horse Sport Ireland continues to encourage responsible biosecurity practices across the sector to safeguard equine health and minimise disease risk. The post Horse Sport Ireland Equine Influenza Advisory appeared first on .
