THEHORSE.COMSeasonal Horse Hoof Health ChallengesAs the seasons change, so do the strategies we use to manage horses hoovesSpring and fall bring one of the biggest challenges to hoovesmud. | Adobe stockBecause horses hooves function as living, responsive structures, their health and strength often reflect the environmental stressors they encounter. And as most horse owners have experienced firsthand, horses frequently face pesky climate-specific hoof health problemsthrush, abscesses, or hoof cracksbecause varying moisture levels, temperatures, and terrain conditions can all challenge the structural integrity of the proteins that make up hooves.Beyond stall-side observations, the scientific community has also established that the environment has a profound effect on horses feet.1 While we cant control how harsh the next winter might be or how badly the subsequent April showers will flood our pastures, we can take some season-specific proactive steps to mitigate seasonal hoof health challenges.Your Horses Hooves Interact With Their EnvironmentThe rainy fall and spring seasons notoriously bring moisture-related conditions, while hard (potentially frozen) ground contributes to hoof cracks in the summer and winter.Temperature and moisture fluctuations can have profound effects on hoof health due to the structural composition of the hoof, which consists primarily of the fibrous structural protein keratin, explains Jason Williamsen, a farrier based in Warwick, New York.For that reason, starting off with strong, robust feet, whether barefoot or shod, makes it much easier to prevent many commonly occurring issues that haunt feet with thin, shelly walls and shallow soles, adds Ric Redden, DVM, a renowned veterinary podiatrist who established the International Equine Podiatry Center (IPEC) in Versailles, Kentucky, 40 years ago.Rapid transitions between wet and dry conditions cause the hoof to repeatedly expand and contract, leading to mechanical stress that can result in microcracks, brittleness, and compromised hoof wall integrity, Williamsen adds.Excess moisture weakens the intermolecular hydrogen bonds within the keratin structure, he explains. This weakens the horn and creates an opening for bacterial and fungal infections such as thrush (a comon infection of the frog) and white line disease (a degenerative hoof wall infection) to invade. Conversely, dry conditions reduce hoof elasticity, making hooves more prone to fissures, chipping, and sole bruising. Weve grouped seasonal hoof health challenges into fall and spring, winter, and summer. Lets dive in.Fall and Spring ChallengesThe main stressors: excessive moisture levels, transitioning between dry and wet conditions, deep mudCommon issues: thrush, white line disease, pulled shoes, subsolar abscesses.Youll notice weve grouped fall and spring, despite opposing each other on the calendar, because they introduce the same obstacleendless wetness. As winter either approaches or recedes, excessive moisture in the ground can create ideal conditions for white line disease, thrush, and hoof abscesses to raise their ugly heads. Prolonged exposure to wet footing is problematic because excessive water is a killer, Redden says, comparing the hoof wall tubules and matrix to a strong cardboard box. Cardboard and hooves both weaken with too much moisture.White line disease is a relatively common issue, he says. The Merck Veterinary Manual defines the condition as progressive and keratolytic (breaking down keratin), affecting the deeper layers of the stratum medium (the middle layer, also the thickest) of the hoof wall. It causes the hoof wall to separate due to crumbling decomposition of the horn at the white line. While the exact cause remains unclear, anaerobic bacteria (those that dont need oxygen to survive) and fungi likely play a roleeither as primary pathogens or opportunistic invaders following initial damage.2 White line disease can result in lameness issues when the hoof wall defect is advanced enough to trigger a separation of that hoof wall, Redden says.White line disease can cause a horses hoof wall to separate due to crumbling decomposition of the horn. Here an equine podiatrist has resected a hoof due to the condition. | Erica Larson/The HorseAs for thrush, this infection happens so frequently that experts sometimes disagree on how clinically significant it is. Over the years, I have found that many individuals use thrush as an excuse for lameness in the horse, notes Michael Fugaro, VMD, Dipl. ACVS, owner of Mountain Pointe Equine Veterinary Services, in Long Valley, New Jersey. I do not agree with that assessment. My interpretation of thrush is (its) a superficial accumulation of black moisture within the central sulcus of the frog. These outer tissues are insensitive and should not influence pain sensations of the deeper anatomy of the hoof.That said, he warns that if left untreated, thrush can persist and cause tissues to degrade. As regions of the frog break down and become necrotic, bacterial infections can invade deeper into more sensitive tissues, he explains. Once this complication occurs, I no longer consider the issue to simply be thrush.Fugaro says in his experience, though, many horses with exposed sensitive and infected tissues on the hoofs solar surface can remain surprisingly sound. Finally, mushy feet make it easier for horses to lose their shoesespecially in paddocks with deep mud, which can have a suctioning effect. Bacteria can travel into the hoof wall, leading to painful subsolar abscesses. Hoof abscesses can be compared to pimples lodged under human fingernails. Trapped within the rigid hoof capsule, these pockets of pus and debris cant expand outward, so the pressure builds internally, causing significant pain and lameness.Prevention and management:Clean and inspect hooves daily, removing mud and debris. A good hoof pick and wire brush can go a long way in treating 90% of diseases of the hoof, says Fugaro.Provide dry turnout areas (fencing off flooded or swampy parts of paddocks if needed) to spare the horses from having to stand in deep mud.Ensure regular trimming to prevent flares and cracks that can trap bacteria. One of the biggest mistakes horse owners make is neglecting regular hoof care, such as skipping farrier visits or not cleaning hooves daily, which can lead to thrush and white line disease as well as a chronic infection known as canker, says Williamsen.Since our domesticated horses arent roaming the wild lands and naturally exfoliating their hooves on rocky terrain, were responsible for the routine trimming of their feet, Fugaro explains. Routinely trimming off excess horn improves the overall health and hygiene of the hoof.Use hoof hardeners to help toughen excessively soft hoof walls and soles. Common ingredients known for their hoof-hardening benefits include aluminum chloride hexahydrate, glycerin, formaldehyde, ethyl alcohol, methyl alcohol, and methyl salicylate.3Promptly address any suspected hoof abscesses with your farrier or veterinarians direction. Treatment often involves wrapping and/or soaking the hoof in antiseptic (i.e., Betadine) and in drawing agents (ichthammol, Epsom salts), and the farrier or veterinarian paring the sole with a hoof knife to dig out the abscess in some cases. Deciding whether to administer the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) phenylbutazone (Bute) for hoof abscesses often proves tricky. I prefer not to administer NSAIDs unless I have to, Fugaro says. In years past it was commented that NSAIDs delay abscesses from opening. I dont think there is any science behind this, but I have delayed NSAID therapy (for hoof abscesses) as much as possible. The speculation is NSAIDs reduce inflammation so, rather than working its way out, the abscess gets smaller so the pressure cant produce a place to exit.Summer ChallengesThe main stressors: dryness, hard ground, biting insectsCommon issues: dry, brittle hooves, hoof cracks.Again, in the summer, the combination of heat and dry, hard ground can cause hooves to lose moisture, becoming brittle and prone to cracking. Hard footing can also cause concussive damage, leading to solar bruising and discomfort. Adding insult to injury, pesky bugs swarm, biting horses legs and prompting them to stomp their feet. Over time this repeated concussion can leave hooves brittle and cracked.In warmer months some barns opt for nighttime turnout, Williamsen says, offering a solution for the insect problem. However, this reversed turnout schedule can come with its own set of hoof health challenges for horses. The problems we see from night turnout include softening of the hooves and fungal infections due to prolonged exposure to dewy grass and increased moisture, he adds.Prevention and management:Apply high-quality hoof moisturizers or conditioners to lock in hydration.Provide a balanced diet with adequate biotin, zinc, and amino acids to support the tensile integrity and strength of the hoofs keratin-rich horn. Focus on meeting your horses vitamin and mineral requirements through high-quality hay coupled with either a ration balancer or concentrates as needed before turning to the many hoof supplements available.Very few, if any, have been proven to treat, cure, and even prevent hoof-related conditions, explains Fugaro. Having an appropriate expectation of each products effectiveness is essential.When dealing with hard ground, consider using hoof boots on unshod hooves for added protection.Attire your horse with fly boots and apply fly spray daily to reduce insect nuisance.Pick a turnout rotation (day vs. night) that works for your individual herd.Winter ChallengesThe main stressors: hard ground, icy conditions, excessive moisture, and slow hoof growthCommon issues: sole bruising, hoof cracks, snowballs in feetWilliamsen says he has noticed a seasonally different growth rate in his Northeast clientele, where both summers and winters come with extreme temperatures. For some equestrians in cold climates, hoof cracks or other defects seem to grow out at a snails pace in the winter. Thats because cold conditions slow hoof growth, with researchers having shown the most hoof growth happens in either summer or fall (depending on the specific study) and the least in winter.3-4 Researchers generally agree seasons significantly influence hoof growth.5When its bitter cold out but not snowing, those dry winter conditions can make hooves brittle, increasing the risk of chips and cracks, Williamsen says. Think of the same frigid, arid conditions that have you reaching for your hand cream and lip balm nonstop. Any conditions that allow the hoof wall to fissure, compromising its integrity, invite bacteria and other pathogens to travel up inside the hoof, potentially resulting in abscesses and white line disease.Farriers use snow pads to keep snowballs from forming in the horses feet, and Borium studs improve traction. | Photo: Erica Larson/The HorseFrozen or uneven ground can certainly lead to hoof bruising and cracks, he adds. Snow and ice buildup (in hooves) can cause further discomfort and affect traction, sometimes leading to slips or falls.Prevention and management:Maintain a regular trimming schedule as recommended by your farrier, even if hoof growth slows, to prevent structural imbalances and hoof cracks.Whenever possible avoid excessive exposure to prolonged wet, slushy conditions that could weaken the hoof wall.Williamsen recommends applying snow pads, as recommended by your farrier, if you need a more permanent solution. Borium studs can also be added.Housing MattersResearchers on a German study made two noteworthy observations: Housing impacts both hoof hardness and the susceptibility of the hoof to seasonal effects. In open stable housing the horses hooves had the highest horn hardness in summer, whereas winter showed the least horn hardness, the researchers say. Water content was highest in wintertime. In contrast, such seasonal changes could not be observed in indoor housing.6 Their findings reinforce the idea that the environment influences hoof health and, therefore, at least partly within our control as horse owners, caretakers, farriers, and veterinarians.Take-Home MessagePreventing seasonal hoof problems starts with consistent care. THEHORSE.COMWhy Does My Horse Have a Fat Leg?5 reasons for swelling, from benign triggers to causes for major concernWhen assessing a swollen limb, feel it and note abnormalities such as heat, lumps, crusts, or signs of pain. | iStockYour horses sleek, strong legs have remained taut and unblemished throughout (and sometimes despite) his athletic pursuits. Then one day as you offer him breakfast, you notice he has a fat leg. Is it cause for alarm or something simple to deal with? Lets look at the variety of causes for limb swelling.Initial Assessment StepsBefore you assume the worst, consider that in many cases prompt recognition and treatment can resolve leg swelling. Jump on the situation and contact your veterinarian immediately rather than trying the wait-and-see approach.First, youll want to gather information to share with your veterinarian before making the call. Rosemary Cuming, BVSc MS, MANZCVS, Dipl. ACVIM, of Scone Equine Hospital, in New South Wales, Australia, advises owners to make notes about the whole horsenot just his limbs. Pay attention to the horses demeanor, appetite, water intake, and fecal output, she says. Has the horse shown any signs of illness recently, or has anything changed regarding diet, deworming, medications, blanketing, bandaging, or bedding, for example? Matt Randall, DVM, of Collier Equine, in Waller, Texas, urges horse owners to also take the horses rectal temperature.Cuming suggests making a checklist of questions to address. Watch the horse closely when he is standing still and then moving, and ask yourself:Does the horse appear comfortable, or is he showing stiffness? Is he lame? If so, to what degree? Is only one leg or are multiple legs swollen?Do you see any drainage or signs of a puncture or other wound? Feel the affected limb(s), and note any abnormalities:Is there heat in the limb?Does the horse pull away due to pain following a light touch or firm palpation of the swollen area?Do you feel irregularities in the skin or hair, such as scabs and crusts, moist or oozing discharge, or abnormal lumps?Is the swelling localized (limited to a specific area), or is there generalized pitting edema (the fluid swelling is over a larger area and the tissue stays depressed after you press on the swelling with your finger)? Is the swelling in proximity to or within a synovial structure such as a joint or tendon sheath?Fever, lameness, and wounds involving synovial structures definitely increase the potential urgency for veterinary attention to limb swelling, Randall says. Limb swelling can be innocuous or may be indicative of a localized disease process within one or more legs, or due to more serious systemic diseases involving other body systems, adds Cuming. Having a clear description of the type and location of swelling, the horses overall state of health, any history of previous limb swelling, and any recent management changes is information that helps your veterinarian assess over the phone whether the limb swelling requires immediate veterinary attention or can first be treated symptomatically and monitored. Here are five common diagnoses your veterinarian might make.1. Stocking UpStocking up describes swelling of the lower limbs (below the knees or hocks) in horses due to pooling of fluid (edema) in the tissues, says Cuming. Stocking up often occurs when horses undergo a period of restricted movement such as stall confinement, she says. A reduction in the normal physiologic pumping of fluid causes the lower limbs to swell. She likens it to swelling that might develop in your ankles following a long plane ride. RELATED CONTENT: Is Hot Weather Making My Horses Legs Stock Up?A horses lymphatic system is always working to move fluid, proteins, and nutrients around the body. In the normal horse, fluid, proteins, and nutrients frequently leak out of blood vessels to bathe the cells of the tissues with needed nutrients, says Cuming. This fluid, together with cellular debris, dead blood cells, bacteria, and other pathogens (disease- or damage-causing organisms), toxins, and protein molecules, is then removed from the leg via lymphatic vessels, which are thin-walled, valved structures capable of containing large volumes of fluid. The lymph fluid is filtered through the lymph nodes and then returned to the bloodstream via the veins. There is no active pump (like the heart) in the lymphatic system, and so pressure and movement in the tissues and organs around lymph vessels influence flow, she continues. In horses lower legs, movements of the hoofs digital cushion (the soft tissue beneath the sole that separates the frog and heel bulb from the underlying tendons and bones), the pasterns, fetlocks, ligaments, and tendons play an important role in helping to pump lymph fluid up the lymphatic vessels against the force of gravity.While stocking up can occur in any horse, Cuming says veterinarians most commonly see it in older horses or those with previous leg injuries, cellulitis, or lymphangitis (see next section) due to less-efficient circulation. The best thing to do is to get the horse moving, she says. Active exercise with hand-walking, longeing, or riding should resolve at least some of the swelling. Support bandaging also helps reduce swelling rapidly. However, if used too long, bandaging further reduces lymphatic and blood flow and can perpetuate the condition.2. Cellulitis and LymphangitisSignificant and alarming limb swelling is often due to cellulitis or lymphangitis. Limb cellulitis typically occurs acutelythe horse seems fine, then becomes lame suddenly, says Cuming. Cellulitis is a diffuse bacterial infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues that dissects rapidly and extensively through tissue planes. Bacteria such as staphylococcal or streptococcal species enter a break in the skinsometimes youll see a wound, sometimes the infections entry point isnt obvious, such as might occur if leg boots cause microabrasions in the skin, she says. The swelling causes significant lameness and fever and is usually in a single limb, says Randall. I have seen cases where multiple limbs were involved after too much time standing in nasty water when horses were trapped for days in floodwater after Hurricane Harvey in 2017.The affected limb is characteristically swollen, hot, and very painful to the touch, with an associated moderate to marked lameness, adds Cuming. A small number of horses, however, will pull up lame without obvious limb swelling, and you only suspect cellulitis when you feel heat and mild pitting edema in the lame leg. In addition to pain and swelling, cellulitis may also cause a poor appetite, lethargy, elevated heart rate, fever, and oozing of serum from the skin of the swollen leg.Rapid recognition and early treatment of cellulitis are important to avoid other serious complications, such as supporting limb laminitis (founder in the opposite or supporting leg), dermal necrosis (skin tissue death, seen as sloughing), recurrent cellulitis, persistent lameness, and vascular thrombosis (clotting of the vessels). Any of these advanced problems can result in chronic debilitation or even the need for euthanasia, says Cuming. Horses with ulcerative lymphangitis also exhibit lameness, fever, and lethargy, but with an additional clinical sign: Infection and inflammation can result in cording of the lymphatic vessels into chains of hard nodules that turn into abscesses that rupture. This occurs due to bacterial infection, such as Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis (which causes pigeon fever), which is transmitted by biting flies, or due to deeper penetration by staphylococcal or streptococcal species. Cuming says bacterial infection isnt always the cause of lymphangitis, though. It can also develop due to genetic anomalies, particularly in draft horses.In chronic cases of lymphangitis, Randall and Cuming say permanent thickening of the tissue surrounding the lymphatic system can result in persistent swelling and stocking up, resulting in the limb staying thicker and larger in circumference than normal.3. Infectious Disease Infectious causes of limb edema tend to involve multiple limbs. Typically, the horse has a fever and varying degrees of lameness and limb edema, says Randall. Look for swelling involving all four legs, edema in other parts of the body such as under the jaw and in the sheath, and monitor for other clinical signs that your horse is sick rather than injured, adds Cuming. Signs of illness include fever, lethargy, decreased appetite, nasal discharge, increased respiratory rate or effort, colic (abdominal pain), or diarrhea.Strangles, an infectious disease caused by Streptococcus equi, can create a potentially fatal secondary immune syndrome known as purpura hemorrhagica. In these horses, edema is often quite severe in the limbs, chest, and abdomen, and petechiation (red spots due to small hemorrhages) develops in the mucous membranes and/or the sclera (white) of the eye, says Randall.Systemic viral infections can also cause leg swelling due to vasculitis (leaky blood vessels). These diseases may be mild and self-limiting (resolving on their own) or can be life-threatening, says Cuming. Irish eventers all set for European Championship test at Blenheim PalaceThe athletes are ready, the horses have passed trot-up and the draw has been made Irelands senior eventers are primed for competition with the best Europe has to offer.Dag Alberts squad touched down in Blenheim Palace earlier this week for the Agria FEI Eventing European Championship after a stormy passage as high winds causing some logistical issues.Tomorrow, however, the fun starts. Day one of the championship begins at 10am with the opening session of dressage and, after all of Irelands equine athletes passed first veterinary inspection, Albert and his squad of six are quietly confident of a positive result after a favourable draw which will see them compete last of the nine nations.Robbie Kearns, Padraig McCarthy, Sarah Ennis, Aoife Clark, Ian Cassels and Susie Berry will, of course, face stiff opposition in the pursuit of medals, but Albert carries the air of a quietly confident team manager.He said: The horses are all in great order, we had no issues this afternoon in trot-up, and everyone is raring to go.Its an experienced squad we have here and all six of them will play a major role in what we hope is a successful weekend.
