That equates to nearly three million emergency room visits. To be even more gloomy, complications from those falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths for that age group.The normal changes in our bodies as we age set us up to lose balance and coordination. Weakening muscles and bones, poor posture, declining vision and hearing, and aching joints all conspire to throw us off balance. The result is often an unintended and disastrous collision with the ground. Understanding how this happens and how to adapt to these physical changes improves your daily life and, as a happy additional benefit, improves your riding.Balance & PostureBalance dictates your coordination and ability to stand, walk, stoop, and turn without toppling. Proprioception is the scientific term for how we sense where we are in space.Nerve endings throughout your body deliver an ongoing play-by-play to your brain of where your body is and what its doing. Your brain analyzes all the input as fast as a wizard kid solving a Rubiks Cube and signals your muscles to react and keep you anchored.For example, as you walk around the barn, you step on many different surfaces: the hard center of the barn aisle, the soft bedding in the stall, the rubber mats in the wash rack, the grass in the pasture, and the sand in the arena. You might be aware of the changes in the surfaces, but probably not of the changes your body makes to adjust your footing on each of them. Balance depends on core, leg, and ankle strength. Strengthening muscles and developing good balance can slow the inevitable decline. If you already have balance troubles, exercises and behavioral changes help correct them. It starts with proper posture. The ideal posture is also what you want when sitting in the saddle: level shoulders and hips; ears, shoulders, elbows, hips, and ankles in a straight line; looking ahead, your toes and chest are pointed in the direction of travel. Standing in the correct position automatically requires you to use your abdominal muscles so youre essentially doing mild crunches all day. Strong leg muscles and ankles add even more support. All this is great for riding, since it makes you more secure in the saddle.Bone Density & VisionAnother factor is bone density. Bones regenerate somewhat when youre younger, but once you hit 50, bone loss outpaces formation. This means a higher chance of breaking something.Strength training and weight-bearing exercises both help to slow bone loss and increase bone density. Posting while you ride counts, as does walking after a horse that doesnt want to come in from the pasture.Vision is also vital. As you age, you lose your peripheral vision. It happens so slowly that you may not even realize it. As your range of vision becomes smaller, you unconsciously shift your focus to compensate. You look at the ground a yard or so in front of your feet when you walk, which means you tilt forward, shifting your center of gravity. If you stumble, you cant immediately compensate and right yourself.There are plenty of ways to improve balance, coordination, and peripheral vision. The simplest is training yourself to stand and move in the correct position. Instead of looking down, focus forward on where you want to go, like looking ahead when approaching a jump.Focus ahead instead of on the ground in front of you as you walk to help improve posture. Switch sides.Tightrope walk: Walk in a straight line, placing one foot directly in front of the other, heel-to-toe, as though walking on a tightrope.Flamingo stand: Lift one leg to a 90-degree position. Hold for a count of 10. Repeat on the other leg. Ankle strengthener: While sitting, push your foot as though you are pressing on the gas pedal of your car. Do this 10 to 12 times, then rotate your foot in each direction 10 times. Quality forage creates the foundation of a healthy equine diet. | iStock.comQ. Do you have advice for those of us feeding performance horses on tight budgets?Glen from TrinidadA. In my job as an equine nutrition consultant, clients commonly come to me with long lists of products theyre feeding their horses. This is particularly true of my performance horse clients. When added together the cost of these products is significant, sometimes exceeding $5 per day. This kind of budget is not realistic for many who own performance horses. So, your question is a good one.My advice is to start at the foundation of your horses diet and to be fastidious about management. Dont scrimp on quality forageits the best investment for your feeding dollars. The more you can feed your horse like a horse, the less likely you will incur expensive veterinary bills associated with conditions such as gastric ulcers and colic and the less reliant you will be on concentrate feeds. Make sure the forage is clean and as free of dust as possible, as this will protect airway health. Feed as much forage as you can to honor your horses digestive tract anatomy and physiology.Forage, however, cannot provide everything your horse needs all year round. Even if your forage source is pasture, at some point in the year its quality and abundance will likely drop. Neither pasture nor hay typically provides adequate levels of trace minerals, might not provide adequate vitamins such as vitamin E and, depending on the individual horse and discipline, might not provide adequate calories. This makes a concentrate, commercial feed, or a balancing supplement necessary.Select a feed you can offer properly per the manufacturers directions. If youre only going to feed a couple of pounds a day, dont be fooled by the fact the performance or senior feed is significantly cheaper per bag than the ration balancer. Those feeds have daily feeding rates typically in the range of 0.5 to 1 pounds per 100 pounds of body weight. Feeding less than this will leave your horse with key deficiencies that over time might cause health issues and have you reaching for hoof supplements, coat products, and additives that support topline development. Paying more per bag for the ration balancer and feeding it per directions will likely save you money in the long run.Other essentials include:Fresh, clean water;Salt provided daily, ideally in the feed, with free access to an additional source;Omega-3 fatty acids for horses not grazing pasture for 12 or more hours per day; andPossibly additional vitamin E for those same horses.RELATED CONTENT | Feeding Performance Horses (Podcast)Vitamin E supplementation is relatively expensive, and not all horses require it. So, put some money toward getting your horse tested to see whether supplementation is necessary. Horses with deficient or marginal levels of vitamin E in their bodies are at risk of developing conditions such as vitamin E deficiency muscle myopathy and equine motor neurons disease, so this is an investment worth making. Ask your veterinarian to take blood during an already-scheduled visit such as spring or fall vaccinations or during a dental check to save on an additional farm fee.Whether your horse is going to need supplements depends on his individual needs. Does he have underlying health conditions that need additional support, such as allergies, or need digestive tract support? Do you have the budget remaining to add a joint supplement if you want one? If you decide to add other products, have a clear reason for adding them. Dont add products just because someone else in your barn is doing it for their horse and seems to be having good results. Their base diet might not be as solid as yours, or their horses situation might not be the same as yours. Also, dont feel bad if you dont have the budget to add more. Very little research exists on the efficacy of many supplements. If possible, try to use products backed by research so you have some peace of mind that the products do what they say they will.Also consider investing in a consultation with a qualified equine nutritionist when feeding performance horses on a budget. While it might include an upfront expense, if you explain your situation, they should be able to help guide you toward a diet that meets your horses needs as well as your budget. That peace of mind can be priceless.

The unvaccinated horse developed clinical signs on Sept. 8, including anorexia and fasciculations. He is still alive.EDCC Health Watch is an Equine Network marketing program that utilizes information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to create and disseminate verified equine disease reports. TheEDCCis an independent nonprofit organization that is supported by industry donations in order to provide open access to infectious disease information.WNV 101West Nile virusis transmitted to horses via bites from infected mosquitoes. Not all infected horses show clinical signs, but those that do can exhibit:Flulike signs, where the horse seems mildly anorexic and depressed;Fine and coarse muscle and skin fasciculation (involuntary twitching);Hyperesthesia (hypersensitivity to touch and sound);Changes in mentation (mental activity), when horses look like theyre daydreaming or just not with it;Occasional drowsiness;Propulsive walking (driving or pushing forward, often without control); andSpinal signs, including asymmetrical weakness; andAsymmetrical or symmetrical ataxia.West Nile virus has no cure.
