Recognising working equines as individuals can significantly improve welfare, study says
A recent study has confirmed that treating horses and donkeys as individuals, allowing them to choose when they work and when they rest, drink and eat improves their overall welfare at work. The research project, carried out by The Donkey Sanctuary, particularly highlighted the benefits of allowing working equines agency and freedom of expression. It isthefirst study to show that seeing equines as individuals, and allowingthem agency and freedom of expression, could improvetheoverall welfare ofdonkeys at work.Dr Tamlin Watson, senior researcher at The Donkey Sanctuary, said: A better understanding of equine labour could be hugely beneficial to the working lives of equines around the world, particularly donkeys whose marginalised status means that their needs, welfare and behavioural expressions are often misunderstood or may be completely overlooked. The charity looked at case studies of working equines from across the world, separating the work they did into three categories: hard work, decent work and affective work.Hard workThey categorised hard work as relentless physically and physiologically demanding tasks. For example, animals carrying heavy loads to Indias brick kilns. They pointed out that in this category both handler and equine have little choice when to work and when to rest, eat or drink.Decent workIn cases of decent work for example, forestry, farm or ridden work this denotes work where equines and owners may have more freedom to choose the limits and pressures of their working day.Affective workAnd finally, affective work describes cases where animals support human emotions, such as animal-assisted therapy.Study findingsThe researchers said that: Equines working in the assisted activities industry are expected to sustain heavy emotional labour. Equine agency in this context may vary depending on the ethos and approach of practitioners. The study found that workingdonkeysin the decent and affective work categories were afforded greater freedom to express their behaviours, interact with otherdonkeysand were given opportunities to choose not to work. These factors are important for equine wellbeing and have a positive impact on their welfare, said The Donkey Sanctuary. In contrast, donkeysperforming hard work were less likely to have the same freedoms, which suggests they are more likely to suffer from poorer welfare.Power dynamicsDr Watson added that the owners of these hard-working equids should not be judged too harshly, as social, cultural and political-economic contexts may limit their opportunities to grant such freedom to rest, play or forage to their animals. She also said that while some forms of work, when combined with a suitable environment and working conditions, could create a more positive experience for animals and owners, care must be taken not to romanticise those relationships or downplay the power dynamics in working animal contexts. Its important to remember that all equines engaged in activities with people, including equines being ridden for example, are engaged in work of some kind. Therefore, where possible, we encourage those engaging with working equines to accept that resistance to work is valid communication and if they can, give their animals more freedom to choose.Read the study in full hereRelated contentTiny bone fragment causes complications after donkeys routine tooth extractionHow to tell if a horse is happyThis is what a horses ear positions tell you about their moodSix things you need to know about horse communication. The post Recognising working equines as individuals can significantly improve welfare, study says appeared first on Your Horse.

Three effective 10-minute exercises from Yazmin Pinchen to improve your jump off
Theres a lot to think about in a jump off. Do you play it safe, take the long route and go clear, even though you could risk losing out to a faster pair? Or do you gamble, taking tight turns to make up time and chance a fallen pole? Here, showjumper Yazmin Pinchen McCulloch shares three exercises to help improve your jump off performance by suppling your horse, getting them to listen and enhancing your control.Exercise 1: Adapt their strideTime: 10 minutesIn a jump off, you need to be able to adjust your horses stride to a fence quickly. Practise this exercise to get their canter under control.Set it up: Place two poles on the ground down one side of your arena, eight canter strides (29m-32m) apart. How to ride it:Go large in canter, looking for the poles.Canter over the centre of each pole, counting the strides between the two.Repeat this, aiming to get the same number of strides in.Now add or take out a stride, altering between the two with each repetition.Change the rein and repeat.Exercise 2: Supple them upTime: 10 minutesThis exercise helps make your horse more supple, ideal for perfecting those tight turns.Set it up: Place a small upright jump at X in your arena, so you jump over it going from B to E.How to ride it:Go large in canter on the left rein.Ride as if on a 20m circle, looking ahead for your jump.Turn towards your jump, keeping a forward but relaxed pace.Use your inside leg and outside hand to direct your horse. Jump the fence.Continue along the figure of eight on the right rein. Repeat the exercise and then jump back onto the left rein.As you progress, gradually make the figure of eight smaller.Exercise 3: Get them listeningTime: 10 minutesHaving your horse listen to your leg will help with communicating quick changes of direction in a jump off. Practise the following on each rein. How to ride it:Canter a 20m circle on the right rein.Use your outside leg and inside hand to guide them into a smaller circle. You should aim for 10m.Once on the smaller circle, use your inside leg to push him back onto the bigger circle. Open your outside rein to guide him.Change the rein and repeat.Main image Your Horse Library/Kelsey Media Ltd. Three five-star podiums for Irish athletes
Cian OConnor and Gengis Kann de Londe on their way to a third-place finish at the Tops International Arena in Valkenswaard (Photos: Sportfot)There were some strong performances at five-star level for Cian OConnor, Denis Lynch, Jordan Coyle and Conor Swail this week, with victories at three- and two-star grade coming too from Thomas Ryan and James Chawke. On the Longines Global Champions Tour, OConnor made the podium in the first competition of the Global Champions League with his talented Gengis Kann de Londe on Friday. At the spiritual home of the LGCT, the Tops International Arena in Valkenswaard, OConnor and the Karlswood Partners-owned nine-year-old gelding were clear, along with 22 other combinations. That group included another nine-year-old, the European Championships contestant, Qonquest de Rigo and his former European Championship-winning pilot, Bertram Allen.Whereas the latter Irish duo did not challenge the top end in terms of time however, OConnor and his son of Kannan were hugely competitive, which is no surprise once the World No 23 sets his mind to putting the pedal to the metal. The Olympic medallist, who was also clear in the 1.60m second competition with Iron Man, upped the revs and Gengis Kann de Londe responded brilliantly, accurate and fast to record a time of 66.09.That was only four-hundredths of a second off Willem Greve (NED) in second on Highway Tn N.O.P., with Alex Ferrer (FRA) taking the overall honours in the 1.55m class on Vitalhorse Fleur dOz thanks to a clear in 65.68.Amazingly, Lynch was fourth in tree five-star classes at the Dutch venue over the weekend. On Saturday, the Tipperary man and his handsome ten-year-old chestnut mare Katja illustrated their potential as a high-class combination when fourth in the 1.45m two-phase class won by Swedish giant Henrik von Eckermann and Qasirah van de Reistenhoek.Lynch and Katja registered two clear rounds over the power and speed sectors, and were extremely competitive in the latter portion, their time of 24.56 just over half a second shy of the victorious standard.Next up was the five-star 1.50m jump-off class. There were 43 participants and victory went to home favourite Kevin Jochems on the Irish Sport Horse Shanroe Peeters, bred in Co Down by Anthony Smyth. The Anthony Smith-bred Shanroe Peeters (ISH) was a five-star winner on the Longines Global Champions Tour at Valkenswaard, with Kevin Jochems (NED) in the saddleThe 11-year-old gelding by Dallas VDL (BWP) out of the Condios (HOLST) broodmare Shanroe Sapphire (ISH), prevailed in an 11-strong jump-off with Jochem leading an all-Dutch podium, William Greve and Sanne Thijssen delighting the locals. On this occasion, Lynch finished fourth with Brooklyn Heights, the joint-oldest horse in the class at 16, making light of his years by skipping around the Grass Arena clear for a second occasion in 43.82Amazingly, Lynch was fourth for the third time in five-star competition on Sunday morning, and again it was Katja performing strongly, this time in a speed class on the Sand Arena. The 1.45m competition was won by Giulia Martinengo Marquet (ITA) with Captain Morgan Weering Z, who jumped clear and quickest in 62.21.World No 27 Lynch and Katja took another decent chunk of prize money by virtue of their perfect jumping round, in a time of 63.47.There was a strong Irish presence too in Toronto for the Major League Show Jumping leg.Under lights in the BFL Stadium, Jordan Coyle was second in the 1.50m Grand Prix Qualifier in the early hours of Friday morning Irish time. The in-form Derry pilot guided Ariso to a brilliant double clear, a feat matched by only four combinations. They stopped the timers on 31.59 but world No 1, Kent Farrington found a way to snip a half-second off that, Myla leaving all the poles intact in 31.05 to claim the garlands. They would go on to be fifth in the $500,000 Kubota Grand Prix of Toronto, won in the early hours of Sunday morning by Daniel Bluman (ISR) with Corbie VV, with American heavy hitters, Farrington, riding Tulayna, and Lillie Keenan, on Le Louvre 5 completing the podium.Conor Swail and Casturano, who had won a 1.40m two-phase class earlier in the week were fourth with a double clear.Coyle and Ariso posted a time that would have been fast enough to usurp Keenan from the bronze medal position but had one rail down. Daniel Coyle and Gisborne VDK missed the eight-strong jump-off with one time-fault, having gone 0.12 seconds agonisingly over the time allowed. At the beginning of the day, Swail was legged up on Theo 160 to deliver another five-star podium finish, in the 1.45m Winning Round class. Richard Vogel (GER) told everyone else to Beat It, riding Michael Jackson W to a tie-breaking clear of 37.09. Savannah Jenkins (USA) was runner-up with Bresil de Carnaval Santa Rosa, with Swail and Theo just eight-hundredths of a second further back with a time of 37.78.Thomas Ryan was a three-star winner at the Azelhof Summer Festival on Saturday, guiding Connoisseur Pwf to victory over Irish Nations Cup pair, Billy Twomey and Jumping Jack van de Kalevallei in an electric jump-off.The margins could not have been tighter, with just three-hundredths of a second separating the Irish athletes in the 1.45m class, Ryan edging it by stopping the clock on 38.88 having recorded an error-free round for the second time.Twomey and his partner had jumped a double clear as Ireland podiumed in the Falsterbo Nations Cup so this was a high calibre affair and a brilliant result for Ryan and his ten-year-old grey, with the runners-up doing practically nothing wrong and certainly losing no caste in just missing out on the top rung of the ladder on this occasion. Also on Saturday, James Chawke won the two-star Del Mar Classic Grand Prix in California with the very consistent Daido vant Ruytershof Z, the duos jump-off time of 39.7 seconds a full 1.78 seconds faster than their nearest double-clear rivals.BREEDINGSHANROE PEETERS (ISH) 2014 gelding by Dallas VDL (BWP) out of Shanroe Sapphire (ISH) by Condios (HOLST). Try These Two Ground Obstacles
Table of ContentsTogglePreparationGround Obstacle #1: BridgesGround Obstacle #2: Step-OversMore Groundwork ArticlesObstacles for horses to cross appear on the trail, in the show ring and even in between the pasture and barn. (Hello, newly fallen tree branch that wasnt there yesterday!) Teaching a horse to confidently approach these obstacles from the ground will take the angst and frustration out of many situations. Its super beneficial to expose a horse to any sort of obstacle you can get your hands on because it creates better communication and trust between handler and horse, says Camille White, who operates Camilles Mustangs out of Bryan, Texas. White is also the 2022 Fort Worth Extreme Mustang Makeover Champion.PreparationBefore you begin introducing a bridge or step-over to your horse, White advises preparing him by making sure he has a few prerequisites down pat.Can Stand Still: A horse that knows how to stand still shows that he is capable of down-regulating his nervous system and accessing the thinking side of his brain, according to White. During obstacle training, she rewards the horse by releasing all pressure and allowing the horse to stand still and relax.Legs Are Desensitized: When working with obstacles like bridges or step-overs, there is a good chance the obstacle will touch the horses legs. White prepares the horse for this sensation by introducing him to the feeling of having his legs touched by various objects before starting obstacle training.Has a Good Follow: Before she starts obstacle work, White wants the horse to know how to track her when being led. She calls this having a good follow. In addition to tracking her, she wants the horse to know how to maintain a respectful distance from her.Can Isolate Body Parts: White wants the horse to know how to move specific body parts when asked so she can position him to approach the obstacle. This includes the ability to move his shoulders and hindquarters from both sides. Once finished, she wants to see the horse return to a neutral, relaxed state.Understands Halter Pressure: White teaches a horse how to respond correctly to halter pressure before starting obstacle training. When she picks up on the lead rope and the halter tightens across the horses poll, she wants him to smoothly and willingly move forward with her.Ground Obstacle #1: BridgesBridges can show up in the show ring and on the trail. But White explains that learning how to step onto a bridge can also teach a horse how to step onto other strange surfaces, such as loading into a trailer. Groundwork is the key to introducing bridges and other novel surfaces.Step 1: Begin by confidently approaching the bridge and ask your horse to follow. Dont stop or hesitate when walking toward the obstacle, as this may communicate to the horse that its unsafe to move forward. If he hesitates, reinforce your ask by continuing to move forward and creating gentle pressure across the horses poll with the halter.Step 1: Confidently approach the bridge and ask your horse to follow. Photo by Shoshana RudskiStep 2: Reward effort. Watch for the horse to commit to following you across the bridge. As soon as he commits, release all pressure. Try to time the release of pressure with the horse crossing the bridge to associate it with the obstacle. You may have to reward many small steps (such as sniffing the bridge or taking a single step toward it) before the horse commits to crossing the obstacle.Step 2: As soon as your horse commits to following you across the bridge, release all pressure. Photo by Shoshana RudskiStep 3: Once he is comfortable calmly crossing the bridge, have the horse cross it again, but ask him to stop in the middle. When he stops, release all pressure and allow him to relax on the bridge. This helps the horse associate relaxation with the obstacle. If your timing is well-placed during step 2, this step will come naturally to most horses.Step 3: Once your horse is comfortable crossing the bridge, ask him to stop in the middle. Photo by Shoshana RudskiBe ready to troubleshoot the top three most common challenges when it comes to introducing a bridge crossing from the ground.Refusal to Move: If the horse refuses to move during your approach, yield his hindquarters and shoulders to unlock his feet, then approach the bridge again. If he still refuses, create pressure at the hindquarters to encourage forward movement. Begin by simply looking at his hindquarters. If there is no response, increase pressure by using an extension of your arm, such as a training flag, to tap the horses hindquarters until he moves forward. Reward the smallest effort by removing all pressure.Moving Backward: If the horse moves backward, move with him without releasing the tension on the lead rope. Continue to ask him to take one step forward in the right direction. Reward effort, which may be as small as the horse leaning toward the bridge.Rushing the Bridge: The first time the horse crosses the bridge, he may rush over it. If he rushes through the obstacle, immediately turn around and cross the obstacle again. Repeat until he slows down and becomes intentional about where he places his feet.Ground Obstacle #2: Step-OversStep-overs appear in the form of ground poles, cavalletti poles, logs, branches and even puddles of water. A horse that knows how to step over an obstacle can successfully navigate many different situations. White shares the following steps for teaching a horse how to step over obstacles from the ground.Step 1: Start with an easy item to step over, such as a ground pole. Confidently approach the step-over and ask the horse to follow. Dont stop or hesitate when walking toward the obstacle, as this may communicate to the horse that its unsafe to move forward. If he hesitates, reinforce your ask by continuing to move forward and creating gentle pressure across his poll with the halter.Step 1: Just like the bridge, confidently approach the ground pole.Photo by Shoshana RudskiStep 2: Reward effort. Watch for the horse to commit to following you across the pole. As soon as he commits, release all pressure. Try to time the release of pressure with him crossing the bridge to associate it with the obstacle. You may have to reward many small steps (such as sniffing the pole or taking a single step toward it) before the horse commits to crossing the obstacle.Step 3: Once the horse is comfortable stepping over a single ground pole, increase the challenge by adding more ground poles in a row and eventually increasing the height of the step-over. Follow steps 1 and 2 until he can calmly cross the obstacle.Step 3: Once your horse is confident stepping over a pole, add more poles or increase the height of the step-over. Photo by Shoshana RudskiAgain, there are some common issues you should be ready to troubleshoot from the get-go when it comes to step-overs.Avoiding the Obstacle: If the horse tries to sidestep or go around the obstacle, isolate his shoulder and ask him to return to a straight position before asking him to move forward toward the obstacle again.Reacting to the Obstacle Touching His Legs: If the horse reacts poorly to the obstacle touching his legs, return to the prerequisite of familiarizing him with foreign objects touching his legs before trying the obstacle again.Rushing the Step-Over: Adding height to the step-over may cause the horse to rush or jump over it. If that happens, immediately turn around and cross the obstacle again. Repeat until he slows down and becomes intentional about where he places his feet.Preparedness is always going to be your best friend when working with horses, says White. She encourages you to prepare your horse for situations that require him to cross obstacles before the need to cross an obstacle arises. Teaching your horse how to become comfortable with obstacles takes time, but its time worth investing.More Groundwork ArticlesGroundwork for When You Cant Ride Five Groundwork Exercises for Your Horse Groundwork Exercises to Improve Communication Groundwork with a Purpose How to Start Training a Horse for LibertyThis article about ground obstacles appeared in the September 2024 issue of Horse Illustratedmagazine.Click here to subscribe! The post Try These Two Ground Obstacles appeared first on Horse Illustrated Magazine.
