    Coyles Farrel fairytale continues
Daniel Coyle and Farrel winning the five-star opener at Wesley Clover Parks Ottawa International Class on Thursday night (Photos: Ben Radvanyi Photography)Ottawa was the venue of the latest high-profile Irish success in the show jumping world, as Daniel Coyle emerged with a five-star win, while Darragh Kenny posted two runner-up finishes.Wesley Clover Parks has been the site of plenty of glory for the Green Jackets over the years and Coyle added to it with victory in the opening international feature on Thursday night. The newly-minted World No 9 headed a field of 26 with a fresh, fit and firing Farrel, owned by the Ardmore natives primary patron, Ariel Grange.Having successfully jumped the first phase of the course set by Brazilian designer Marina Azevedo, the deadly duo set a blistering time of 29.52 seconds while leaving all rails intact to see off local hero Erynn Ballard with Her Game Ball BG by nine-tenths of a second.Further evidence of the calibre of the competition was the presence of McLain Ward (USA) in third, riding Snapchat van de Broekkant Z.Farrel has been one of the stories of the show jumping season, having seemed assured of stardom six years ago after being produced at Lothlorien Farm following his purchase by Granges late mother, Susan.Covid and then a cyst led to more than two years on the sidelines, and unofficial retirement at least. The gleding made a remarkable recovery and has become a winning machine since returning to the fold at the age of 15.Hes had a very peculiar career, said Coyle of the Dutch Warmblood. He was my top horse as a nine-year-old and then Covid hit, and he had some time off. He grew a cyst in his stifle and they said hed never jump again, but Ariel came in with some magic and said well give him another chance. He owes none of us anything but if you see him going into the arena, hes so fired up. Hes been my top horse before and now hes 15 years old and hes still one of our top horses. Its a really special story. The Derry pilot gave an insight into the challenges of travelling from country to country on a weekly basis but in particular, when crossing the Atlantic, as he did following last weeks 150th Dublin Horse Show at the RDS.Its very difficult, he said. I dont think theres one person who could say, Oh, its no problem. Its very difficult to go from different time zones and to riding different horses in different parts of the world. But thats how you stay at the top of the game. You have to do it if you want to stay at the top. Is it tiring? Is it frustrating? At times, of course it is. But like any other athlete, you have to get on with it.I like to come back here to Ottawa, especially because Ariel really likes it here. We do so much traveling around that its nice to come closer to home.On Friday, Kenny was close to making it two renditions of Amhrn na bhFiann on the trot but it was a Trojan effort by the Offaly rider and Colibelle Hero Z (below) to bag the silver medal in the five-star Grand Prix Qualifier nonetheless. The pair took the lead in the dozen-strong jump-off by stopping the clock in 37.52 seconds but that mark didnt last long.Allessandra Volpi (USA) was next into the ring on Qannando B&V and they left all the rails in place while stopping the timers in 36.82 seconds to move to the top of the leaderboard, where they remained. It was a first five-star triumph for horse and rider as a tandem.Kenny settled for an excellent second with Colibelle Hero Z, a ten-year-old Zangersheide mare owned by Elena Haas.Conor Swail just missed out on a top three slot, by three-hundredths of a second, steering Caturano to a double clear in a time of 38.4.There was another runner-up finish for Kenny at Wesley Parks on Saturday night, with Diaroubet, a horse he has only been riding in competition for three months. The five-star Winning Round class was won by Canadian, Nikki Walker, who is a native of Ontario and so had huge support in the stands.Kenny and Diaroubet actually only had the only double clear round in the top five but of course with Winning Round rules apply, the top ten progress to the jump-off where all the combinations kick off with a clean slate.Second time around in the 1.50m class, Walker and Kenny were the only athletes to register clear rounds but it was Walker and Atout des Trambles that were significantly quicker, 45.48 seconds to 47.57.Volpi had the fastest time by a large margin, 41.53 seconds, but a rail down with Glamour placed her third in the final standings. The post Coyles Farrel fairytale continues appeared first on Horse Sport Ireland.

Discover the Future of Equestrian Safety: Unveiling Slimline Body Protectors
Key Points Details Introduction of Slimline Body Protectors New body protectors enhance safety and comfort for equestrians, crucial for high-risk activities. Safety and Injury Reduction Study shows a 56% reduction in injury risk with body protectors during cross-country riding. Slimline Design Advantages Reduces bulk, increases mobility, encourages consistent use among riders. Comfort Innovations Uses flexible Gelfoam and innovative designs for better heat dissipation and comfort. Certification and Protection Levels Slimline protectors meet Level 3 impact standards, essential alongside helmets for optimal safety. Air Vests Integration Instant inflation on fall detection; popular for additional safety despite needing more research. Rider Adoption Improved comfort in vests lowers barriers to adoption in high-risk disciplines. Educational Efforts Highlighting injury reduction benefits and user-friendly designs promotes better safety habits. Real-World Anecdotes Riders like Jane are shifting toward slimline designs for combined comfort and safety. Conclusion and Future Slimline body protectors are pivotal for future safety in equestrian sports, offering comfort and efficiency. The Evolution of Equestrian Safety: Slimline Body Protectors UnveiledAs the equestrian community strides toward innovation, a groundbreaking advancement on the horizon promises enhanced safety without sacrificing comfort. Presenting the slimline body protectors, these marvels not only redefine comfort but significantly bolster safety during high-risk activities like cross-country riding. In this blog, we'll explore how these protectors have emerged as essential gear for horse riding enthusiasts.Section 1: The Safety and Injury Reduction EvidenceA revealing study examined 718 accident reports from U.S. Pony Clubs, emphasizing that wearing body protectors can reduce injury risk in cross-country riding by a staggering 56% [1]. This stands as a testament to the vital role they play in reducing injury severity, particularly in demanding equine sports.Enhancing Safety with Slimline DesignsThe traditional designs of body protectors faced criticism for being bulky and often uncomfortable. However, slimline protectors address these issues by minimizing bulk, thereby restricting movement less. With this improved mobility offering, slimline designs encourage more riders to use them consistently. The Comfort Factor Driving InnovationSlimline body protectors leverage advanced materials and ergonomic design. By using flexible Gelfoam and innovative strapping systems, they maintain the vests position without restricting rider movement. This advancement enables riders to experience reduced heat buildup, enhancing the comfort levels previously unheard of in traditional vests [5].Certification and Protection LevelsModern slimline protectors possess stringent safety certifications, such as Level 3 for impact absorption. They effectively disperse energy from falls, significantly reducing the risk of injury. Nonetheless, it's essential to remember that no vest can guarantee full prevention against severe torsional injuries or spinal injuries. Thus, complementing them with other PPE like helmets remains paramount [4].The Rise of Air Vests and Complementary Safety TechnologyAir vests are another innovative layer of protection often worn with slimline safety vests. These vests inflate instantly upon detecting a fall, enhancing protection. While further research is necessary, they are immensely popular among riders who perceive higher fall risks [2].Section 2: Enhancing Rider Adoption Through Comfort and EducationThe comfort improvements visible in slimline vests reduce barriers to protective gear adoption. Riders engaged in disciplines with higher risks are more likely to wear them consistently, thus enhancing safety culture in the equestrian sports arena.Educational Efforts in Promoting Safety Gear UseEducating riders about the statistical benefits of injury reduction and showcasing user-friendly slim designs are crucial in promoting better safety habits. As knowledge and awareness grow, so does the potential for widespread adoption of these protectors.Real-World Examples and AnecdotesConsider seasoned riders like Jane, who previously avoided bulky protectors but now embraces slimline designs. Riders in similar scenarios are gradually shifting their preferences, opting for gear that offers both comfort and safety. The Slimline Difference at Just Horse RidersAt Just Horse Riders, we emphasize the significance of this innovation with an extensive collection of jodhpurs, horse riding boots, and other complementary safety gear categories. Conclusion: Shaping the Future of Equestrian SafetyThe future of equestrian sports is bright with innovations like slimline body protectors. Your Horse Life: Young Horse Challenge
Endless milkweedsilky white puffs and yellowing pods that split and curlcome into sharp focus between the ears of my horse. The ears are darker viewed from the saddle than on the ground. Sooty buckskin in color. They swivel, flop and sometimes point at invisible things as we make our way through the field. Its ride five. Leaves crunch as we turn into the woods. Chaps neck arches with curiosity, nostrils, ears, eyes alert. Bold feet move us into dappled light. He is a 3-year-old Shire sport horse with one blue eye and an unflappable nature. Hay bales flying from above? Fine. Chainsaw? Fine. Feed bags blowing in the wind, a weed-whacker? No problem.Kitson and Chaps, a Shire sport horse, spent two years getting to know each other before he was ready to ride. Photo by Linda AlderImpulse BuyI bought beautiful Chaps on impulse when he was little more than a year old. He was the size of a pony with much growing to do. For two years we have enjoyed trail walks, grooming and hand-grazing. My Section D Welsh Cob and I ponied him on quiet hacks. On the long walk to Chaps turnout field, we worked on small goals, my shoulder to his cheek: walk next to me, not in front. Stop when I stop. It is possible to walk through grass without grazing.Chaps learned fast. But soon this joy monger would need to learn to carry a rider. Id sent a deposit a year before for a spot in a colt-starting program with a gentle cowboy named Randy Brown. Chaps walked right onto the trailer the day he left for his three-month Shenandoah Valley summer riding camp.First RideBy all reports he did great. Still, worry set in as I drove down to ride him for the first time. I had been riding my cob for 17 years. I hadnt quite faced the fact that now Id need to ride a freshly started youngster.I recalled the day my oldest child was born. Id sailed through a blissful pregnancy, but having a newborn to care for at the end of it was still a shock. The Blue Ridge mountains cast shadows over the unfamiliar barn. Chaps greeted me warmly. Outside, he stood like a soldier as I stretched my leg over his back for the first time. He moved off at an unhurried, unworried pace. This new perspective felt right, his wide shoulders and thick mane in front of me. Chaps seemed to understand that it was me up there on his back, ears flicking in my direction to check in. I exhaled and put my shoulders back as joy began to replace angst, one stride at a time.14 DaysThe next day, Randy escorted us through an expanse of beautiful farmland. We walked. We talked. I reached my hand back to scratch a spot on Chaps back just behind my leg. Later, I used the word momentous to describe the brief ride. It had importance. When Randy delivered Chaps home at the end of September, he admonished me to make the most out of my training investment. To lightly rideor do something with the horseevery day for 14 days, starting immediately. Just ride him, Randy said.I still had anxiety about the new responsibility (and risk) of riding a young, inexperienced horse. The first day, we explored the ring. Then we expanded our travels to the fields and into the woods around the property. There was a single meeting of my knee and a tree (I yelped so loud he was careful from then on).I could see that Chaps still had much to learn: Dont rush downhill, pay attention to your feet even if theres something to look at, dont veer off the trail. When I let him wander, our first stop was always a visit to Teddy, his pasture mate relegated to a paddock.Crunching LeavesWhile our rides were short and light-hearted, the everyday routine meant daily bursts in our trust and confidence in each other. Chaps didnt spook much. I reassured him as needed. On that fifth day as we turned into the woods with the crunch of leaves underfoot, I worried how I would make the rest of 14 days work. I had a full-time job, a teen with a broken arm who couldnt tie his own shoes, a husband out of town, three dogs, a cat and a turtle to mind. I was determined, but what if getting there every day17 miles each waystarted to feel like a chore? Maybe it was the crunch of the leaves that reminded me of my 12-year-old self on that turn into the woods. The sound could be my autobiography. It reminded me in that moment of how hard I had to work for access to horses when I was a kid.Chaps helped Kitson recall her inner 12-year-old horse girl, who would do anything for saddle time. Photo by Linda AlderI persuaded the school bus driver to drop me off at a riding school along her route. Then I convinced a riding instructor to let me do chores in exchange for lessons. It wasnt long before she let me wander off on solo trail rides on Whiskey, a liver chestnut Quarter Horse she had in training. Id sing to him when he would startle from noisy geese overhead or a passing car on a dirt road. Often we were alone in the woods, just me, Whiskey, and his hooves crunching through the leaves.Inner Horse GirlThe weather cooperated for every one of Chaps and rides during those intense two weeks. The trees turned autumn colors as we explored forgotten corners of the farm and made figure-8s around trees. We lingered with hawks and deer. I quit worrying where all this was going. Day 14 was not our best ride, but it didnt matter. None of this was a chore. It was pure joy. Along the way, this remarkable young horse helped me pay respect to my younger horse-loving self, and the work it sometimes takes to get and keep yourself in the saddleover a lifetime if youre lucky. This article appeared in the September 2024 issue of Horse Illustratedmagazine.Click here to subscribe! The post Your Horse Life: Young Horse Challenge appeared first on Horse Illustrated Magazine.

3 California Horses Test Positive for Strangles
Three horses in Los Angeles County, California, recently tested positive for strangles. One of the affected horses in an 11-year-old Quarter Horse mare at a boarding facility, who tested positive on Aug. 14 after developing a fever, nasal discharge, and lower limb swelling on Aug. 11. Details are not available on the other two horses. All three horses are under quarantine.EDCC Health Watch is an Equine Network marketing program that utilizes information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to create and disseminate verified equine disease reports. TheEDCCis an independent nonprofit organization that is supported by industry donations in order to provide open access to infectious disease information.About StranglesStranglesin horses is an infection caused byStreptococcus equisubspeciesequiand spread through direct contact with other equids or contaminated surfaces. Horses that arent showing clinical signs can harbor and spread the bacteria, and recovered horses remain contagious for at least six weeks, with the potential to cause outbreaks long-term.Infected horses can exhibit a variety of clinical signs:FeverSwollen and/or abscessed lymph nodesNasal dischargeCoughing or wheezingMuscle swellingDifficulty swallowingVeterinarians diagnose horses using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing with either a nasal swab, wash, or an abscess sample, and they treat most cases based on clinical signs, implementing antibiotics for severe cases. Overuse of antibiotics can prevent an infected horse from developing immunity. Most horses make a full recovery in three to four weeks.A vaccine is available but not always effective. Biosecurity measures of quarantining new horses at a facility and maintaining high standards of hygiene and disinfecting surfaces can helplower the risk of outbreakorcontain one when it occurs.

Kentucky Quarter Horse Positive for WNV
On Aug. 16, a 13-year-old Quarter Horse mare in Webster County, Kentucky, tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The mare, who is unvaccinated, developed clinical signs on Aug. 11, including ataxia and muscle fasciculations. She is still alive. This is Kentuckys second confirmed equine WNV case in 2025.EDCC Health Watch is an Equine Network marketing program that utilizes information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to create and disseminate verified equine disease reports. TheEDCCis an independent nonprofit organization that is supported by industry donations in order to provide open access to infectious disease information.WNV 101West Nile virusis transmitted to horses via bites from infected mosquitoes. Not all infected horses show clinical signs, but those that do can exhibit:Flulike signs, where the horse seems mildly anorexic and depressed;Fine and coarse muscle and skin fasciculation (involuntary twitching);Hyperesthesia (hypersensitivity to touch and sound);Changes in mentation (mental activity), when horses look like theyre daydreaming or just not with it;Occasional drowsiness;Propulsive walking (driving or pushing forward, often without control); andSpinal signs, including asymmetrical weakness; andAsymmetrical or symmetrical ataxia.West Nile virus has no cure. However, some horses can recover with supportive care. Equine mortality rates can reach 30-40%.Studies have shown thatvaccines can be effective WNV prevention tools. Horses vaccinated in past years need an annual booster shot, but veterinarians might recommend two boosters annuallyone in the spring and another in the fallin areas with prolonged mosquito seasons. In contrast, previously unvaccinated horses require a two-shot vaccination series in a three- to six-week period. It takes several weeks for horses to develop protection against the disease following complete vaccination or booster administration. In addition to vaccinations, owners should work to reduce mosquito population and breeding areas and limit horses mosquito exposure by:Removing stagnant water sources;Dumping, cleaning, and refilling water buckets and troughs regularly;Keeping animals inside during insect feeding times (typically early in the morning and evening); andApplying mosquito repellents approved for equine use.
