Colorado Standardbred Dies After Contracting WNV
On July 29, an unvaccinated, 6-year-old Standardbred mare in Las Animas County, Colorado, tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The horse developed clinical signs on July 24, including weakness and ataxia. She has since died.EDCC Health Watch is an Equine Network marketing program that utilizes information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to create and disseminate verified equine disease reports. TheEDCCis an independent nonprofit organization that is supported by industry donations in order to provide open access to infectious disease information.WNV 101West Nile virusis transmitted to horses via bites from infected mosquitoes. Not all infected horses show clinical signs, but those that do can exhibit:Flulike signs, where the horse seems mildly anorexic and depressed;Fine and coarse muscle and skin fasciculation (involuntary twitching);Hyperesthesia (hypersensitivity to touch and sound);Changes in mentation (mental activity), when horses look like theyre daydreaming or just not with it;Occasional drowsiness;Propulsive walking (driving or pushing forward, often without control); andSpinal signs, including asymmetrical weakness; andAsymmetrical or symmetrical ataxia.West Nile virus has no cure. However, some horses can recover with supportive care. Equine mortality rates can reach 30-40%.Studies have shown thatvaccines can be effective WNV prevention tools. Horses vaccinated in past years need an annual booster shot, but veterinarians might recommend two boosters annuallyone in the spring and another in the fallin areas with prolonged mosquito seasons. In contrast, previously unvaccinated horses require a two-shot vaccination series in a three- to six-week period. It takes several weeks for horses to develop protection against the disease following complete vaccination or booster administration. In addition to vaccinations, owners should work to reduce mosquito population and breeding areas and limit horses mosquito exposure by:Removing stagnant water sources;Dumping, cleaning, and refilling water buckets and troughs regularly;Keeping animals inside during insect feeding times (typically early in the morning and evening); andApplying mosquito repellents approved for equine use.

Ohio Yearling Tests Positive for EHV
On August 4, a yearling Quarter Horse filly at a boarding facility in Cutler County, Ohio, tested positive for the respiratory form of equine herpesvirus. The horse developed clinical signs on July 31, including coughing and bilateral nasal discharge. Ten additional cases are suspected, and 20 horses are exposed. The farm is under voluntary quarantine.EDCC Health Watch is an Equine Network marketing program that utilizes information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to create and disseminate verified equine disease reports. TheEDCCis an independent nonprofit organization that is supported by industry donations in order to provide open access to infectious disease information.EHV 101Herpesvirus is highly contagious among horses and can cause a variety of ailments in equids, including rhinopneumonitis (a respiratory disease usually found in young horses), abortion in broodmares, and EHM.In many horses, the first or only sign of EHV-1 infection is fever, which can go undetected. In addition to fever, other common signs of EHV-1 infection in young horses include cough, decreased appetite, depression, and a nasal discharge. Pregnant mares typically show no signs of infection before they abort, and abortions usually occur late in gestation (around eight months) but can be earlier. Abortions can occur anywhere from two weeks to several months following infection with EHV-1.Horses with EHM usually have a fever at the onset of the disease and might show signs of a respiratory infection. A few days later, neurologic signs such as ataxia (incoordination), weakness or paralysis of the fore- and hind limbs, urine retention and dribbling, loss of tail tone, and recumbency (inability to rise) develop.Herpesvirus is easily spread by nose-to-nose or close contact with an infectious horse; sharing contaminated equipment including bits, buckets, and towels; or clothing, hands, or equipment of people who have recently had contact with an infectious horse.Routine biosecurity measures, including hygiene and basic cleaning and disinfection practices, should be in place at all times to help prevent disease spread.Current EHV-1 vaccines might reduce viral shedding but are not protective against the neurologic form of the disease. Implementing routine biosecurity practices is the best way to minimize viral spread, and the best method of disease control is disease prevention.

Coyle and Pender deliver at RDS
Jordan Coyle and Millview Cicero (ISH), bred by Harry Marshall, were the opening five-star winners as 150 years of the Dublin Horse Show were celebrated in ideal fashion in the Main Arena (Photos: Jumpinaction.net)Jordan Coyle and Mikey Pender gave the gleeful home support plenty to shout about as a landmark Dublin Horse Show kicked off with a bang thanks to two Irish five-star victories in the Main Arena at the RDS.It is a special renewal at the iconic Simmonscourt venue, as 150 years of the historic show are being celebrated and what better way to do it than with the opening pair of 1.45m speed classes going the way of revered local heroes.Jordan Coyle has been rocketing up the world rankings with a slew of five-star victories in recent months, jumping another seven places in the latest table to 35, so it should have come as no surprise that he would continue to deliver on territory he knows so well. The Derry rider led a field of 44 to take the honours in the Heathman Farm Speed Stakes this morning, producing a blisteringly fast clear round on the Harry Marshall-bred Millview Cicero (ISH).The 11-year-old gelding is normally the ride of Dermott Lennon, the former world individual champion and European team champion, who is a close friend of Coyles and mentored him for a period.Coyle and Cicero ambled into the arena with pathfinder Susan Fitzpatrick and Lovely Stassi PS in the lead having gone clear in a time of 54.76. A total of 26 combinations failed to improve upon that standard until Coyle and Millview Cicero (below) stopped the clock on 52.70.That was untouchable, and only Adrian Whiteaway (GBR) got anywhere close, just edging out Fitzpatrick for second with I Am A Harley registering a clear in 54.40.To win anything here is good and to be fair, its only my third time ever riding the horse, Coyle explained. It belongs to a very good friend of mine, Dermott Lennon, and hes done all the work with it, so maybe I stole all the glory today!Me and Dermott are friends now for a few years. He come and spent a year with me and it changed everything for me, having a man like that to be there with me 24/7. I learned an unbelievable amount of stuff from him. If I could have my way Id have him more often but that year was invaluable, to be honest. All the horses are good now. Chaccolino has been a serious contestant in the Grands Prix. Hes clear every time. For Gold has just been an absolute winning machine. He was brilliant in Spruce (Meadows) but before he went to Spruce he also was winning and then last week in Hickstead, he won one class but he was very unlucky to not win two classes. And he should have won the main class today (when posting the quickest time of 66.72 but having the unluckiest of four faults). It is lovely to have one on the board on home territory but if I had my way, Id win every class I jump in! Thats the way we are and if you arent, you shouldnt be there.I have the three horses for the week: For Gold, Chaccolino and Millview Cicero. For Gold is in the (Anglesea) Speed (Stakes) tomorrow and I will be very disappointed if he doesnt win and Ill jump Chaccolino in the (Cashel Palace Hotel Stakes), which is a qualifier for the Grand Prix.In a sign of what was to come, the consistent Pender was fourth on HHS Cyprus (ISH) but the Castledermot pilot entered the winners enclosure in the next event, the Minerva Stakes. There were 47 participants attempting to clear the 11 obstacles in the quickest time possible and with HHS Fortune accurate and quick, it was comfortable enough for Pender, the duo registering a flawless round in 51.23 to see off Pius Schwizer (SUI) and Joan.Trevor Breen completed the podium with Konrad Obolensky. The 1.55m Sport Ireland Classic narrowly escaped Penders clutches, as Richard Vogel (GER) and Phenyo van het Keysersbos went around blemish-free in 67.57 0.85 seconds slower than Coyle and For Gold.Mikey Pender and the Marion Hughes-bred HHS Fortune (ISH) in the winners enclosure on the opening day of the Dublin Horse ShowThe winning clear was just 0.32 seconds faster than the in-form Pender and HHS Los Angeles (ISH). Former Irish chef dequipe, Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) was third with Dhalida.Im absolutely delighted with how the horses jumped today, said Pender. Obviously, its the biggest show of the year for us. Hopefully we can get the horses here, safe and sound. Thats the first thing and then, to be able to perform to our best.We couldnt do it without the team at home. Its because of everybody working so hard that days like this are possible, that you can come to the biggest show of the year for us and have a great day and every horse jump good.Hopefully now, we can get qualified for the Grand Prix and pull a result out in that.BREEDINGMILLVIEW CICERO (ISH) 2014 gelding by Cicero Z Van Paemal (BWP) out of Royal Dutch (KWPN) by Oklund (KWPN). Can Groundwork Help Horses With Osteoarthritis?
Walking your horse over ground poles can help encourage him to engage his core. | Taylor Pence Photography/The HorseQ. Can groundwork and stretching exercises help a horse with osteoarthritis feel more comfortable?A. Keeping a horse moving is one of the primary ways to reduce pain associated with osteoarthritis. Ive had a lot of old campaigners that have bad hocks and need some time off, then getting them back in work is more difficult; whereas if you keep them working, I think that helps. Baited neck stretches can help horses to be more flexible, especially those with neck arthritis. Working them over ground poles and small cavaletti is also productive because that encourages joint flexion. With these, you can vary the distance between the poles and the height of the poles based on how much flexion you want from the horse. I always recommend these types of exercises to my clients.I dont necessarily recommend a lot of limb stretching because it can be a little bit dangerous to the owner depending on their ability and the horses condition, so I tend to be a little bit cautious when recommending stretches on the limbs. However, I do suggest neck stretches, sternal lifts, and other exercises to encourage the horse to raise his back such as butt tucks (tickle them on either side of the tail head and make them flex the lumbar vertebrae). These simple exercises can help keep horses joints mobile, and to me, is one of the keys to keeping that joint moving normally and more comfortably.

Equine vet practice invests in new technology to aid diagnosis of Cushings
Machines which more accurately detect the concentration of certain substances in blood samples have been purchased by equine vet practice VetPartners to benefit horses with Cushings disease. VetPartners has bought four new immunoassay analysers to replace the technology currently used in its three flagship equine hospitals Liphook in Hampshire, Rainbow in North Yorkshire and Rossdales in Suffolk. The Tosoh AIA 900 analysers will be used to measure insulin and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) levels to help the diagnosis of Equine Cushings disease and Equine Metabolic Syndrome. What is CushingsEquine Cushings diseasefor which the correct veterinary term is Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) is one of the most common disease syndromes to affect horse health. According to the National Equine Health Survey in 2018*, it is estimated that 20% of horses and ponies over the age of 15 are affected.Normally the hypothalamus, a small region of the brain, produces a substance called dopamine which regulates hormone production by the pituitary gland. This is located at the base of the horses brain. The pituitary gland produces a variety of hormones that play an important role in maintaining and controlling many bodily functions. However, horses and ponies with Cushings disease dont produce enough dopamine, which means that the pituitary gland becomes uncontrolled and produces too many hormones.Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is one hormone that is produced in excess, although it is likely that there are also many others.Signs of Cushings disease include laminitis, muscle wastage, abnormal fat deposits, abnormal sweating, recurrent infections, lethargy, increased thirst and urination, abnormal hair coat and reduced fertility.Diagnosis and treatmentThe ACTH test is the simplest and most common test for Cushings disease in horses.A vet will take a blood sample and send it to a laboratory to measure the levels of the hormone ACTH. High levels will indicate that your horse has Cushings disease.New technologyLiphook Equine Hospital has been trialling the new immunoassay analysers, which were created for use in human laboratories, for the past 18 months. Liphook receives hundreds of blood samples from veterinary practices all over the UK and Europe each week. There are several analytic methods available for use in horses, and we wanted to see if this alternative machine had diagnostic benefits over the ones wed used previously, said Professor Andy Durham who heads up the laboratory at Liphook. The ACTH molecule we test for immediately begins to break down after a blood sample is taken, even if you handle it carefully and place it in chilled packaging, but this new analyser is able to detect much more of the degraded ACTH molecule, and therefore it gives a more accurate result. As a comparison, ACTH values measured using the previous method suffered about three to four times more degradation over 24 hours. What this means for horse owners is that it will reduce the risk of false negative results in ACTH tests, so more horses suffering from Cushings disease will receive the treatment they need.ACTH results on the Tosoh AIA 900 analyser will report lower values than previously, and to reflect this, Professor Durham and his team have calculated new ranges for PPID testing results. The new values will also reflect seasonal fluctuations in ACTH levels.Additionally, the testing period has proved there is greater accuracy when measuring insulin levels in blood samples.*View the full 2018 National Equine Health Survey findingshere.Image VetPartners.Related contentEverything you need to know about Cushings disease in horsesLaminitis in horses: all about this common and extremely painful hoof diseaseHow to get a horse to eat their pergolide tabletVet nurse explains what insulin resistance is in horses and poniesThe post Equine vet practice invests in new technology to aid diagnosis of Cushings appeared first on Your Horse.

Exploring the Benefits and Drawbacks of Brushing Boots for Cob Horses: A Comprehensive Guide
Pros of Using Brushing Boots Cons of Using Brushing Boots Considerations Before Using Protection from injuries (cuts, bruises) Risk of rubbing and skin damage Ensure proper fit and quality Support for tendons and ligaments Overheating of legs in warm weather Consider usage context (training vs turnout) Versatility and comfort Boots can come off Regularly monitor your horse for irritation Durability and easy maintenance Potential for false security Consider alternatives and complements Not always recommended for turnout The Pros and Cons of Using Brushing Boots for Your Cob Horse Brushing boots are a popular piece of protective gear designed to shield a horse's lower legs from injuries that may occur when their legs brush or strike against each other. For cob horses, known for their sturdy build and use across various disciplines from riding to driving, the decision to use brushing boots involves evaluating several factors. Introduction In this article, we'll delve into the pros and cons of using brushing boots for cob horses. Understanding these advantages and potential drawbacks can help you make an informed decision tailored to your specific equine needs. Pros of Using Brushing Boots for Cob Horses Protection from Injuries Brushing boots are designed to prevent cuts, bruises, and abrasions that occur when a horse's legs knock against each other. This is particularly beneficial during training, turnout, or trail riding, as it reduces the risk of severe injuries such as splints or tendon damage by providing a protective barrier. Support for Tendons and Ligaments A quality pair of brushing boots can offer additional support to tendons and ligaments, helping stabilize the leg during movement. This is especially important when performing specific equestrian activities that place added stress on a horses legs. Versatility and Comfort Most brushing boots are versatile enough to fit both front and hind legs, making them a practical choice for consistent protection. Additionally, modern designs prioritize comfort with padded linings and snug fits, minimizing the risk of rubbing during extended wear. Durability and Easy Maintenance Brushing boots are generally made from durable materials equipped with strong fasteners like velcro. They are designed to be long-lasting and easy to maintain, often machine washable with minimal special care needed. Cons of Using Brushing Boots for Cob Horses Risk of Rubbing and Skin Damage Improperly fitted brushing boots or those worn for prolonged periods may cause rubs, pressure sores, or even exacerbate conditions like mud fever. This is particularly problematic if the boots become wet and are not removed in time. Overheating of Legs In warm weather, brushing boots can cause the horses legs to overheat. Increased sweating under the boots may lead to discomfort and elevate the risk of injuries, as overheated tendons and ligaments become more vulnerable during physical activity. Boots Can Come Off Some horses, particularly those that are playful or restless, may manage to remove their brushing boots while turned out. This can lead to lost equipment and the loss of protective benefits that the boots are meant to provide. Potential for False Security While brushing boots provide protection against brushing, they do not prevent all leg injuries. There is a potential for a false sense of security, where owners might underestimate other risks or critical management factors. Not Always Recommended for Turnout The use of brushing boots during turnout is a debated topic. Some experts recommend caution, as the boots can get snagged on fences or rough terrain, potentially causing injuries or getting pulled off. Considerations Before Using Brushing Boots Fit and Quality Ensuring the proper fit and quality of brushing boots is essential in avoiding rubbing and maximizing protection. Invest in well-designed boots with adjustable, secure closures for the best results. Usage Context Weigh the benefits against potential risks based on your horse's activities. Brushing boots are often more suited for controlled activities like training and competitions rather than for unrestricted turnout. Monitor Your Horse Regularly check your horse's legs for signs of rubbing, irritation, or heat build-up, especially after use in warm weather or extended wear. Alternatives and Complements Consider using other protective gear or making changes in management, like safer turnout environments, to mitigate injury risks without the potential downsides of constant boot use. Conclusion For cob horses, brushing boots can be an invaluable tool in preventing leg injuries during exercise and certain turnout situations. They provide support, comfort, and durability. However, attention to proper fit, weather conditions, and the horses behavior is crucial. By being aware of the potential downsides like rubbing, overheating, and the boots coming off, you can optimize the welfare and performance of your horse. For more insights into the right choice of brushing boots, trusted resources such as BARE Equestrian's Carbon Brushing Boots offer modern designs focused on protection and comfort. Similarly, equine care guides underscore the importance of regular checks and cautious use during turnout to avert complications. Utilize thoughtful attention to your cob horse's unique needs to ensure that the benefits of brushing boots are maximized, while minimizing potential risks. ```html```
