    Nail-biter at National Balmoral
The final of the 2025 DAFM Studbook Series took place over the weekend at the National Balmoral Championships. The chance to top the league was wide open with all hopeful pairings within points of each other, across the age groups. The 2025 DAFM Studbook Series is funded under National Breeding Services by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and delivered by Horse Sport Ireland. The 5 Year Olds final took centre stage early on Sunday morning, with the top 25 pairings, of 50 entries, qualifying from Saturdays opening round. Ennisnags Unicum-H (BWP) narrowly missed out on Sundays final, falling just outside the Top 25, which meant steady poles was all that separated Robyn Moran and Kilbrackan Stakatto (ISH), from the 2025 5-Year-Old League title. A double clear from this pair was more than enough to secure the title for Robyn, also placing 4th overall in the class. Harry Wood and Boleybawn Alexa (ISH) were the days winner for the class, with Max Foley capturing the League Young Rider title.Robyn Moran and Kilbrackan Stakkato (ISH), 5 Year Old league winnersHarry Wood and Boleybawn Alexa (ISH)The 6-Year-Old final went down to the wire when Emer Kavanagh & MMS Alexa (ISH) failed to qualify for the final, while sitting atop the league table. 24 pairings of 56 entries, made it through to Sundays final. Tholm Keane needed a clear round to move in to pole position, but with a pole down in the first round of the final, it was ultimately Emer & MMS Alexas (ISH) day. Jack Ryan beat all the competition to win the class with Donal & David Lynchs mare, Thera Van Heiste (BWP). Conor Hayes and Gailes Dream Girl (ISH) took the League Young Rider award, having done enough in previous legs.MMS Alexas breeder Mary McShane was a very proud breeder this weekend. Her mother MMS Camila jumped the Studbook Series as a young horse too. She qualified for Dublin every year until she was 7. She had a great record, she jumped to 1.45, she jumped in Dublin and the Cavan classic. I still have the granddam, she jumped to 1.40. The Kavanaghs bought MMS Alexa as a foal at the breeders classic. I think its a great series, its good for putting mileage on horses, the shows are in good locations, good arenas and lots of good jumping. Its a great start for a horse if you have one good enough. Im a very proud breeder.Emer Kavanagh and MMS Alexa (ISH), 6 Year Old League WinnersThe series concluded with the 7-Year-Old final in the afternoon. It was Gemma Phelans day winning the league on Rory Costigans GRC Mercedes (ISH), and placing 2nd on the day with mare, also placing 4th and 8th with My Private Dancer (ISH) and GRC Casper (ISH) respectively. She narrowly missed the win after Mikey Penders round with HHS Venice (ISH), a speedy jump off with only 5 double clears out of 24 competitors. European Silver medallist Max Foley, again, took the Leading Young Rider title in league, also placing 3rd in the class with HHS Arezzo (ISH).Winning breeder and owner Rory Costigan was delighted with his win It was great to win with another Luidam, Im a big fan of him as a sire. I bred from Mercedes great granddam, and Im breeding from her full sister at the moment, I have a nice 4 year old out of her. Its a brilliant series and I hope to do it again with some of the youngsters coming through and be as successful as this year. I want to thank Gemma, she is a brilliant rider and gets a great read of the horses.Gemma Phelan and GRC Mercedes (ISH)Max Foley, Leading Young Rider in 5 and 7 Year old Leagues.Congratulations to all riders, owners, breeders and grooms of all horses who competed in the DAFM Studbook Series this year. 5 Year Old League6 Year Old League7 Year Old LeagueBreeding: Unicum-H (BWP) 2020 stallion by President (KWPN), out of Jewel Vita-H (BWP), by Cicero Z Van Paemal (BWP). New test available for potentially fatal redworm (and you dont need to buy it from a vet)
The UKs first commercially-available test for large strongyles (redworms) in horses has been released following an increase of this potentially fatal parasite on yards in Europe.Developed by Westgate Labs and released in June, the new test provides a practical solution for horse owners to monitor for the re-emergence of large redworm, the most dangerous intestinal parasite affecting horse health.Large strongyle larvae spend a part of their life cycle in the horses blood vessels and can cause life-threatening damage, including colic, haemorrhage and intestinal infarction often before any signs appear in the affected horse.Empowering horse ownersWhen we started seeing confirmed cases of large redworm in UK horses, alarm bells started ringing. We knew we needed to act quickly to provide a reliable way to identify these infections before they cause serious harm, said business director Kristy Hodgson. Over the past year, weve supported selected yards and veterinary practices in piloting larval culture testing. Were now proud to launch this as a national service. We want to empower owners and prescribers with the tools to make informed decisions and not be forced back to over-worming as a precaution. This innovation sharpens our insight, allowing us to stay ahead of parasite threats while tackling resistance in the right way.How testing worksCurrent best practice for worm management on yards is regular faecal worm egg counts (FWEC), which test for the presence of small redworm (cyathostomin) egg secretion. However, FWECs cannot distinguish between small and large redworm eggs, which look identical under the microscope. The new test is very similar to performing a FWEC.It involves incubating faecal samples under controlled conditions to allow strongyle eggs present to hatch and develop into third-stage larvae. These larvae are then identified under a microscope, enabling accurate differentiation between the large strongyle species Strongylus vulgaris,Strongylus edentatus, andStrongylusequinus and the more common small redworm species.RedwormsProfessor Jacqui Matthews is a recognised specialist in parasitology and director of veterinary science at Austin Davis Biologics, the providers of the EquiSal tapeworm and small redworm blood testing services. She said: The launch of a commercial larval culture test for large strongyles is a very timely and important step for equine health in the UK.WhileStrongylus vulgariswas once considered under control, recent published reports on its increasing prevalence from across Europe and growing concerns about the risk of clinical disease in the UK highlight the urgent need for this service. The move towards targeted worming is vital for preserving drug efficacy, but it must be backed by robust diagnostics to ensure were not leaving susceptible horses exposed to potentially life-threatening infections. Having access to an easy-to-use test that differentiates between small and large strongyles is a significant advancement and will support both effective treatment decisions and responsible parasite control. The Large Strongyle Larval Culture Test is available to buy here and costs 60.Main image supplied by Westgate LabsRelated contentFaecal worm egg counts for horses explainedUsing the wrong wormer could be fatal, warns vetEssential horse worming schedule from a vetResistance to wormers: action every owner must take or horses will dieThe post New test available for potentially fatal redworm (and you dont need to buy it from a vet) appeared first on Your Horse.

Do Hay Balls Revolutionize Feeding for Ponies and Donkeys?Feeding your ponies and donkeys can often feel like deciphering a culinary puzzle. Ensuring that your four-legged friends get the proper nutrition is crucial not just for their health but also for their happiness and well-being. Traditionally, loose or baled hay has been the go-to fiber source, but the recent advent of hay balls has stirred the pot, so to speak. This article takes a deep dive into whether hay balls are revolutionizing feeding methods for our equine companions by examining their benefits, potential drawbacks, and how they integrate with traditional feeding practices. The Importance of Hay for Ponies and Donkeys Hay isn't just horse feed; it's a lifesaver, toolkit, and plaything all rolled into one. The long fibers of hay are essential to support healthy digestion, prevent colic, and promote dental health through natural chewing behaviors [1]. Donkeys, in particular, find hay indispensable, and here's why: It supports digestive health, promoting regular bowel movement. Hay supplies essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and protein. It helps maintain a glossy coat and keeps teeth naturally worked down. It provides hydration through its moisture contenta crucial feature in hot weather. Hay also provides mental stimulation by encouraging foraging behavior.Experts recommend feeding ponies and donkeys grass hay (such as timothy or orchard grass) because it is high in fiber but low in protein and energy. This helps mitigate weight gain and metabolic disorders often associated with richer feeds [2].What are Hay Balls? Hay balls are like the fiber version of Happy Meals for horses. These are compact balls of hay, often wrapped in netting or formed as compressible units, sometimes enhanced with additional nutrients or supplements. They provide an innovative, easy-to-manage feeding method designed to be dust-free and often more convenient than traditional hay bales.Potential Advantages of Hay BallsPortion Control and Waste ReductionIt's like your equines have finally opted for a diet plan. Hay balls can be pre-measured to help owners regulate how much hay is consumed daily, effectively reducing wastage that usually occurs with loose hay, where it may potentially be trampled upon.Reduced Dust and AllergensThe compact form of hay balls means that they typically generate less dust, a major cause of respiratory issues in equines exposed to moldy or dusty hay. Less dust equates to happier, healthier lungs.Convenience for OwnersThink of hay balls as the drive-thru equivalenteasy to store, transport, and distribute. They make feeding less of a chore, particularly for those with limited storage or time constraints.Foraging StimulationIf designed to require gradual consumption, hay balls can simulate natural foraging behavior, keeping your ponies and donkeys mentally stimulated and reducing potential boredom [1].Potential Drawbacks and Considerations While hay balls come with handy perks, they have their downsides too.Digestive Health RisksPonies and donkeys rely on long-stemmed forage to stimulate chewing and saliva production, essential for buffering stomach acid. Over-processed hay balls may reduce chewing time, potentially escalating the risk of gastric ulcers or colic if not supplemented with other long-fiber sources [4].Nutrition VariabilityWith loose hay, you can assess quality visually, but not so much with compressed hay balls. Quality may vary, so ensure they maintain appropriate fiber levels and are free from mold or dust.Feeding AmountsDonkeys typically consume 1-2% of their body weight in hay daily, usually split into morning and evening feedings. Thus, its critical that hay balls are portioned to meet these requirements to avoid overfeeding or underfeeding.Expert Recommendations The Donkey Sanctuary and other equine nutrition authorities recommend feeding quality fiber-rich forage to mimic a donkey's natural dietprimarily barley straw or mature grass hay [4]. They advise caution with options like haylage due to variable energy content and possible spoilage. Hay balls can supplement but shouldn't replace traditional hay without considering the collective impact on fiber length, nutrient balance, and animal behavior. Conclusion: Do Hay Balls Revolutionize Feeding?Hay balls offer convenience, dust reduction, and portion control, making them a nifty tool in an owner's feeding arsenal. However, they cannot fully replace traditional long-stemmed haycritical for digestive health and behavioral enrichment of ponies and donkeys. To truly revolutionize feeding, hay balls must ensure fiber integrity and nutritional completeness while promoting robust chewing. Therefore, hay balls serve as a complementary feeding strategyenhancing yet not fundamentally altering the traditional nutritional guidelines promoted by equine welfare experts [4]. Owners considering hay balls should transition gradually and keep a close eye on the coat, weight, digestion, and behavior to ensure the ongoing benefits of hay feeding are preserved. For those keen to mix things up, check out Just Horse Riders' diverse range of products that cater to equine nutrition and apparel necessities, such as their Jodhpurs Collection, or boost your pony's health with Everyday Horse Vitamins & Supplements.

Adopting a Horse: Love At First Sight
Sometimes the universe sends you what you need.Id lost Emmy, a magnificent, kind, motherly Thoroughbred mare, after her battle with a degenerative soft tissue disease. She was a horse that knows your thoughts before theyve even made it to words; the kind of horse they dont make anymore.Hollywood MomentOur tale begins after months of horse shopping. My husbands draft horse was depressed and needed a friend. Every horse we looked atall Thoroughbredswasnt The One. And maybe I wasnt ready. Then one day, after looking at the New Vocations site, I happened to stop upon pictures of Utopia. But the listing said Standardbred.Photo courtesy Christina BeyerStandardbred? What the heck do I know about them? But his face, and his eyes, and his proud yet kind energy pulled at me. I happened to be traveling for work to Lexington, Ky., the very next day, and their Richwood, Ohio, facility was basically on the way. I contacted Bridget Hollern, their Standardbred trainer, and she said I could come meet him.Upon arriving at the farm, I wasnt really expecting much. I had already pooh-poohed every horse wed gone to look at for months. Like most potential adopters, I gave Bridget a little summary on our horse history and how hard it was to lose a horse like Emmy.We walked into the barn, and like a Hollywood clich, I locked eyes with Utopia. It was love at first sight. He had a presence of intelligence and humor. He found a pack of Twizzlers candy in my pocket and demanded to eat every single one of them.Bridget and I worked with Utopia in the cross-ties and I asked if I could longe him. I got the butterflies back and was smiling from ear to ear. After working Utopia and watching Bridget ride him, I was sold. That night at the hotel room in Lexington, I called my husband. What do I do? Hes a Standardbred, and I wanted a Thoroughbred again. My husband said, Well, do you like him?I replied, Yes, yes, yes! Lets get him.So, a week later, we picked up Utopia from Bridgets barn and brought him home.Allergy AttackThe butterflies and joy faded as the first week went on and we started noticing that Utopia, now known as Twizzler, had developed hives all over his body and face. We went on an eight-week crusade to figure out what he was allergic to. We changed everything you can think of: bedding, hay and feed, baths, allergy meds, even vet-prescribed meds and allergy testing. This poor horse was exploding in his stall as we tried to keep him off the pasture for fear the pasture was causing the allergies.I was devastated and scared. Our trial was almost up, but I didnt want to give up on him.I called Bridget for advice; we even got her vet involved. My vet returned to us with the blood-based allergy testing results: Poor Twizzler was allergic to many things in horse feed, some insects, and a whole lot of pasture plants, including clover. All of the pastures in northeast Ohio are dominated by clover.Out of pure desperation, I talked to my husband about ripping out the pasture and starting over with a grass mix he could live in.I was eventually put in contact with Twizzlers former trainer/owner from his racetrack days, Terry Deters. Terry is a horseman through and through. He is kind and honest, and he was happy to talk about his beloved Utopia, who apparently had always suffered from hives, and had lived comfortably with blood serum allergy treatments.Hallelujah! We didnt have to dig up the pastures and he could eat and live like a normal horse! We started the shots as soon as they came in. It was a relief for Twizzler within the first few weeks.Trike TrialsThe day I knew this hive-stricken horse had to stay with our family was when Twizzler was standing in the cross-ties watching our 2-year-old son Glenn ride his tricycle around in the barn. Glenn knows very little about horses, but he knows how Emmy was with himkind and aware. Glenn assumes all horses are cool with noisy, tiny people riding about.I watched Glenn almost ride his trike into Twizzlers front feet and stop. In slow motion, I thought to myself, OK, hes either going to spook or run over Glenn. Nope. Twizzler, as levelheaded and intelligent as he is, pushed Glenns bike with his nose, and Glenn giggled with glee that he was moving backwards. This game continued on and on.Twizzler didnt mind at all when Christinas 2-year-old son, Glenn, rode around the stable on his tricycle. Photo by Capture Your Happy PhotographyProblem SolvingEventually, we started Twizzler under saddle at our farm. We ride in our pastures and fields; we dont have an arena. It never occurred to me that a Standardbred might not understand that his new job doesnt have a track to guide him, and the aids are very different from being driven. I struggled a bit getting him to understand what I was asking him to do. Something that helped us was creating a large circle out of cones, a bit like a track. The other thing I struggled with was bit selection. It seemed we tried at least 30; all of them resulted in the same thinga lot of anxious chewing and chomping. Our now dear friend Terry reminded me that they race with very simple single-jointed snaffles with fixed mouthpieces. So I put back all the $200 bits and went out and bought a $20 copper roller snaffle driving bit. We now ride comfortably (although somewhat chompy at the beginning of the ride).A Very Special JobA few short months after letting Twizzler into our hearts and home, he embarked on a huge job. Before Emmys passing, she was a friend and a teacher to a 7-year-old family member named Rhys, a boy with Aspergers syndrome (a form of autism spectrum disorder). I was confident Twizzler would be kind and patient with Rhys, too, and we decided to give it a try.Twizzler never put a foot wrong under saddle. He seemed to have the same ability to read the situation that Emmy did. Rhys loves having Twizzler as his new teacher and friend, and Twizzler loves being the center of attention, especially with children and the snacks they often have.A Breed with a Lot to OfferI tell everyone I know looking for a new riding horse to consider a Standardbred. They are level-headed, first and foremost. They are funny and great family horses. They are athletes and love to work. They are extremely trainable, forgiving, and can settle into new situations quickly. Twizzler is also pretty darn sound, even after over 200 races! We were a family of broken hearts, and the universe sent us Utopia. Our hearts are full and our home is complete. This article appeared in the August 2024 issue of Horse Illustratedmagazine.Click here to subscribe! The post Adopting a Horse: Love At First Sight appeared first on Horse Illustrated Magazine.
