Exploring the Pros and Cons of Riding Tights with Sticky Patches: A Trendy Debate Among Equestrians
Key Points Description Riding Tights with Sticky Patches Offer comfort due to four-way stretch fabric and aim to enhance grip, sparking debate and conversation within the horse riding community. Pros Enhanced grip and stability, innovative comfort with warmth and fuzzy linings, and versatility in wardrobe for casual wear. Cons Sticky-butt syndrome with excessive adhesiveness, concerns about durability with developing holes, and style limitations due to aesthetic interference. Solutions and Alternatives Neutralizing stickiness with powder, opting for alternative materials like silicon, and exploring non-stick versions for better comfort. Broadening the Horizon Exploring different riding apparel such as high-quality riding boots, gloves, socks, and horse treats to enhance the riding experience. Conclusion The debate remains open with mixed opinions. Riders should consider pros and cons to tailor decisions to their preferences and needs for the best riding experience. Exploring the Sticky Debate: Are Riding Tights with Sticky Patches a Yay or Nay?Riding tights with sticky patches have stirred up quite the conversation among horse riding enthusiasts. Are they a helpful addition or merely a source of discomfort? In this blog, we'll delve into both sides of the debate and provide readers with an informed perspective on these trendy riding garments.Introduction to Riding Tights with Sticky PatchesRiding tights have gained popularity due to their comfort and versatility. They offer a snug fit, often crafted from a four-way stretch fabric that allows for easy movement while preventing chafing. However, the sticky patchesmeant to enhance griphave raised some eyebrows among the equestrian community.Pros: Why Some Riders Love Riding Tights with Sticky PatchesEnhanced Grip and StabilityFor many riders, the allure of sticky patches lies in their ability to provide a secure seat. This feature is especially handy during energetic rides, offering stability and reducing the risk of unexpected slips. The right grip can make all the difference in a rider's performance [1].Innovative ComfortApart from grip, certain riding tights come equipped with warmth and comfort provisions. Fuzzy linings inside the tights can make winter rides much cozier, enveloping riders in snug and soft fabrics [2].Versatility in WardrobeRiding tights aren't just limited to horse riding activities. They effortlessly double as casual wear, thereby offering riders a flexible and practical option for different facets of their day [3].Cons: Why Some Riders Dislike Riding Tights with Sticky PatchesSticky-Butt SyndromeThe most common complaint arises from the infamous "sticky-butt syndrome". Some riders feel the patches are overly adhesive, sticking too much to the saddle, and resulting in discomfort and hassle during dismounting.Concerns About DurabilityAnother downside is the durability of these tights. Some equestrians report that the fabric tends to develop holes or pills after a relatively short usage period, which can be quite frustrating for those wanting longevity [4].Style LimitationsFor fashion-conscious riders, sticky patches can interfere with the aesthetics of tights, often obscuring colorful and vibrant designs, particularly when paired with half-chaps.Solutions and AlternativesReducing StickinessUsing powder or some barn dust can help in neutralizing excessive adhesiveness. This small tweak vastly improves the riding experience for those facing stickiness issues.Opting for Alternative MaterialsFor those seeking a different grip without the overly sticky sensation, breeches made of silicon or other materials may offer a viable solution. This shift can ensure comfort without losing grip.Exploring Non-Sticky OptionsFor riders looking to shed the sticky nature entirely, exploring non-stick versions of riding tights can be a game-changer, ensuring that everyone finds what works best for them.Broadening the Horizon: Riding Apparel at Just Horse RidersBeyond sticky patches and riding tights, equestrians often also prioritize the selection of high-quality riding boots, gloves, socks, and various horse treats. Each element enhances the individual riding experience beautifully.ConclusionThe love-it-or-hate-it nature of riding tights with sticky patches remains a topic of lively discussion. For some, the enhanced grip and comfort are worth the quirks, while others may opt for different riding apparel. Understanding the pros and cons allows riders to make informed decisions tailored to their preferences and needs. Whatever your mode of choice, ensuring comfort and functionality is paramount for an enjoyable riding adventure.```html```

Meet Lily Voss: An Inspiring Equestrian
Bubbly and full of infectious energy, Lily Voss is unabashedly a horse girl. After an accident as a teenager required her arm to be amputated, she could have hung up her spurs forever. But thats not Lilys style. She climbed back into the saddle and on to show horses in high school, on her college equestrian team, and beyond. These days, shes crafting a career capturing what we all love about horses in the realm of social media. An ATV accident at 14 required amputation of Lilys right arm, but that hasnt stopped her from her quest for riding. Photo by Rachel GriffinHorse Lover From BirthLily grew up in Tulsa, Okla., a third-generation horse girl thanks to a grandmother and mother who rode. Her mother had a string of retired Quarter Horses that she used to show in breed shows.I was born with the defective gene, as my dad would say, Lily says with a laugh. Even before I could walk, I was on horses with my mom, but it wasnt until I was about 8 or 9 that I started to take formal riding lessons and got competitive with it.Lily started her riding journey with dressage throughout her youth and junior years. She showed hunter/jumpers on her universitys Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association team. She ended up falling in love with the hunters, and that has fueled her continued passion for horses.Lily started riding dressage, but has shifted to hunter/jumpers as her true passion. Photo by Rachel GriffinThe AccidentLily was adventurous as a teena little too adventurous, she might say. At the age of 14, she was in an ATV accident that required her to be life-flighted to the hospital. My arm was amputated on the spot, so it wasnt that I had amputation surgeryit was a stitch-her-up surgery, Lily recalls. My mom met me at the hospital, and as any mother would be, she was freaking out and sobbing. But the first thing I said to her as I was being wheeled into surgery was, I guess Im going to have to do western pleasure now. But the surgeon came inwho I had not yet met at this pointyelling, Over my dead body will you sit on a western horse. The surgeon just so happened to be a Hanoverian warmblood breeder and dressage rider. Lily credits her encouragement to continue riding horses as playing a key role in her healing.I would say 99 percent of doctors wouldve told me I was not allowed to get on a horse for at least six months after this hugely traumatic injury, Lily says. My doctor told me, Whenever you feel ready, get on a horse. And so, a week after I was out of the hospital, I was on a horse again.Back in the SaddleLily found being around horses to be therapeutic and helped give her a positive outlook on life after her injury.Having something to work toward and a goal to achieve really helped my recovery, she says.Lilys recovery was faced with two infections, and she says it took her about nine months to find an equilibrium in the saddle and re-learn how to use her body to effectively cue her horse. She leaned on her first horsea half-draft pony named Princeduring that time.He was pony-ish, and he could be a little devil sometimes, Lily says. But after my accident, his attitude changed 100 percent. He knew that I was delicate and fragile, and he took incredibly good care of me, never putting a foot wrong. She says losing her arm helped change her perspective on riding, inviting creativity into her process, and causing her to be a more open-minded rider.Theres more than one way to accomplish something; riding can be effective no matter how it looks, Lily says.Highs and LowsWhen thinking about the moments in her life that have meant the most to her, Lily says participating in the very first para show jumping demonstration at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event four years ago was one of them. But so was competing in her first horse show after losing her arm, which was one year after the accident. It was a pretty monumental moment, but honestly, every single day feels like another success, Lily says. Even though I lost my arm nine years ago, I feel like I learn something new every day. I discover a little bit more about my body, a little more about what I can do rather than what I cant do. Every ride has been a highlight, because I cant take any ride for granted. I didnt know I would get this far.Overcoming the balance and aid issues around having one arm has been her greatest challenge. But more than that, avoiding comparison to other riders experience as a youth were additional layers to her growing as a horsewoman. The biggest obstacle Ive overcome is learning that everybody is on a different journey, so it doesnt matter how old you are, what youre doing, or how youre doing it. As long as it makes you happy, thats all you can ask for.Family and CareerIn college, Lily studied business administration at the University of Lynchburg in Virginia with a minor in digital marketing and graduated in December 2022. Today, the 23-year-old runs her own business doing social media management and content creation specifically for equestrian brands.Lily recently married to her husband, Andrew Voss. Andrew is not a horse person, but hes very supportive of her passion. She makes social media content about her life as a creative outlet.I like to share my journey because I think its important to showcase that riding has its ups and downs, Lily says. It flows, and riding isnt a one-size-fits-all situation. I also choose to share a little bit more of my day-to-day life. [I like] sharing how you can have a very full life, even if you have a disabilityit doesnt have to limit you in any way.Horses and the LifeHer para-dressage horse, Charlie, has now been commandeered by her mom. Lily is in between horses at the moment and rides her trainers horses at a local barn while shes horse shopping. She hopes to re-enter the show ring with a new mount, and plans to make the switch to show jumping from hunter classes.Whatever she does with horses, Lily lives by a philosophy honed by her past and current experiences. No matter what life throws at you, you can always overcome it, however scary things get, she says. Theres always a light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes it takes a week, sometimes it takes a year, sometimes it takes 10 years. But it always gets better, and sometimes works out better. You can follow Lily on Instagram at @lilybvoss.This article about Lily Voss appeared in the July 2024 issue of Horse Illustratedmagazine.Click here to subscribe! The post Meet Lily Voss: An Inspiring Equestrian appeared first on Horse Illustrated Magazine.

Long-awaited ex-racehorse class worth 45k to the winner gets the green light
It has been more than four years in the making, but a new novice-level eventing class for ex-racehorses boasting the biggest British prize pot at novice level is to run at Cornbury House Horse Trials this year (10-14 September). The Racehorse to Eventer Challenge Cup has been introduced for 2025 to encourage and promote second careers in eventing for retired racehorses and those Thoroughbreds that never made it to the track. The class is the brainchild of Jayne McGivern, who stands Golden Horn at Dash Grange Stud. She said: I have been trying to launch this class for more than four years, so words cannot describe how thankful and delighted I am that Cornbury House Horse Trials is as invested in creating value for ex-racehorses as I am.Thoroughbreds are especially suited to high-level eventing, being fast, athletic, intelligent and brave. I cant wait for the best riders in the UK to showcase the skills of these fantastic horses to the world. The winner of the Racehorse to Eventer Challenge Cup will be awarded a George III silver perpetual trophy and 45,000.Each year the successful owner will receive the silver-plated horseshoe of a Derby winner the first of which, for 2025, will be that of stallion Golden Horn, who took the worlds premier Classic race in 2015.Fewer TBs at the top levelAround 7,000 horses leave racing each year according to the most recent Thoroughbred Census in 2023.It showed that whilst the majority of them move into hacking lives, 8% around 560 horses will carry on to a second career in eventing.Recent FEI research showed that whilst Thoroughbreds do not always achieve the same accuracy in dressage and showjumping, they out-perform all other breeds in the cross-country phase of eventing competitions. However, the overall number of Thoroughbreds in top-class eventing is falling. (See the full research here)A new way of lifeTaking part in the inaugural 2025 Racehorse to Eventer Challenge Cup will be Bhodi, a former Flat racehorse who was owned by Jayne and first trained in eventing with Team GB rider Piggy March.Piggy took on Bhodi when he was four and retrained him for eventing. The pair won a novice class at Cornbury House Horse Trials in 2022.Piggy said: I had Bhodi straight out of training, and he took to eventing and to a new way of life like a duck to water. He is very intelligent; a clever horse who had seen the world before and was always a pleasure to work with.Ive had two racehorses for Jayne, who has been a great supporter of mine over the years, and both have been very successful as eventers. One is Bhodi, and the other is Our Old Fella, known as Polo, who went up to CCI3* level with me.Achievable for a lot of peoplePiggy continued: The Racehorse to Eventer Challenge Cup is being held at novice level, which is achievable for a lot of people, and it is so exciting to have the chance to aim at an incredible prize like this. It will be great to see more people appreciate the aptitude that Thoroughbreds naturally have for eventing and make this class a real target.More and more people in racing are determined that their horses should have happy lives after their racing careers, whether that is in other equestrian sports, as pets or in retirement. Thoroughbreds love to run, they love to jump, they love to be busy and to have jobs, and eventing can be the perfect second career for them.Bhodi is now owned by Emily Oppenheimer and will compete at Cornbury with his current rider Mike Jackson.Cornbury House Horse Trials takes place from 10-14 September on the Cornbury Estate near Charlbury, Oxfordshire. Managing Your Horses Weight This Summer
Summer is here and its brought more than just sunshine. Summer weather can make pasture conditions highly unpredictable. Factors like heat, rainfall, soil quality, plant species, and how heavily the field is grazed all influence not just how much grass is available, but also its nutritional contentespecially in terms of calories and water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC). Grass naturally produces simple sugars through photosynthesis, and when production exceeds the plants immediate needs, it stores the excess as fructan. Although fructan isnt technically a sugar, its still a carbohydrate and is processed differently in the horses digestive system. What makes this tricky is that both sugar and fructan levels in grass can shift dramatically within just a few hours, especially after rain follows a dry spell.Whether your horse tends to gain weight easily or struggles to hold condition, nows the time to stay one step ahead. Managing their diet and grazing access during these unpredictable conditions is key to keeping them healthy all summer long. But why is weight management especially important now?Horses need a healthy diet and regular exercise to stay in good shape, just like us humans do. Whether its trouble maintaining a healthy body condition or excessive weight gain, its important we do our bit to maintain our horses health and well-being. Despite its seemingly harmless appearance, summer grass can be high in sugars. So how can I help manage my horse's weight this season? We have put together a few simple measures that can help to reduce any potential issues before they arise.Strip grazing is useful to not only protect your fields and healthy grass growth but also helps manage your horses grass intake. If you are fortunate and your fields are extremely lush, turning out in mnages with (soaked) hay is another useful idea. It still allows your horse to stretch their legs reducing time in the stable and allow you to be able to monitor the amount they are eating.A grazing muzzle is a helpful tool in slowing down eating. Studies have shown it can reduce intake by up to 60-80%; however, these should be introduced slowly and under supervision to begin with and not to be left on 24/7.Keep the score! Monitoring your horses body condition through regular check-ins can be a great way to keep track of your horses weight. You can use a weigh tape to track changes and adapt your management regime as necessary.A low-sugar, high-fibre diet is key! Feeding a quality fibre source like Speedi-Beet supports digestive health and can help your horse maintain a steady, healthy weight.Get moving! It is important to encourage regular movement through varied types of exercise, whether thats hacking, lunging, schooling, or competing.Change up turn-out times! During the different stages of the day when grass grows, the levels of fructans differ. If possible, turnout at night, which is when the lowest amount of sugar is produced in grass.Feeding a fibre feed like Speedi-Beet before turning your horse out can also help prevent them from wanting to gorge on grass, so they feel fuller while consuming less calories.Join us for our summer campaign! This Summer, well be sharing our expert advice and feeding tips all around weight management. Keep a close eye on our social media channels, website, and newsletter for practical guidance to support you in helping to manage your horses weight this season!Contact the team here at British Horse Feeds for more information and advice on 01765 680300.The post Managing Your Horses Weight This Summer appeared first on British Horse Feeds.
