Equally, if you make changes to your horses feeding and management regime but the horses stabled either side, sharing the same air space have dry hay and straw bed then again the improvement may not be as marked.What is the difference between soaking and steaming?Soaking hay will dampen the spores down and make them swell so they are less likely to be inhaled. With steaming the combination of the heat and the moisture actually kills the spores, eliminating the allergenic respirable particles.What makes Haygain stand apart from other hay steamers?Haygain is the only scientifically proven system to kill mould spores including Aspergillus, as well as bacteria and dust mites. The nutritional value and goodness are maintained with improved palatability.How much does Haygain cost to run?The running costs are minimal and you will use considerably less water compared to soaking. The HG2000 uses 2.75Kw and HG600 uses 2.3kW electricity per hour, whilst the HG-ONE uses less at 1.5Kw. Electricity costs vary between utility companies but typically are between 7-18p per kW hour. To work out exactly how much it costs you, find out from one of your electricity bills how many pence per Kw hour your rate is and then multiply that number by either 2.75, 2.3 or 1.5 depending on which model in the range you have and this will give you the electricity cost per cycle. For example, if you are using an HG2000 and paying 10 pence per Kw hour it will cost 27.5p per hour.How much water will be used?The hay will absorb and therefore hydrate bringing it back towards its original moisture content, approximately 15+% of its original weight but the hay is neither soggy or heavy. The HG-PB (HG2000/HG600) will actually use about 4 litres of water per cycle, some will be absorbed by the hay, some will be released as steam when you open the lid and some will be the residue of on average a tea-cup amount of water (condensed steam) which remains from each steam cycle and drains out of the drain hole in the bottom of the hay chest.Does the outside of the container get hot?All of the Haygain range are made from composite materials with highly efficient thermal properties so although the inside of the container can reach over 100 degrees C the outside is just warm to touch. Therefore, Haygain hay steamers are environmentally friendly and energy saving.Can I steam haylage?Absolutely! Haygain will improve the hygienic quality of any forage. Scientific studies have also shown it will increase the shelf life of haylage by up to 4 day.Once steamed, how long before you feed the hay? How long does it last?The hay is very hot when you first take it out and should be handled with care but it cools very quickly once in the air and can be fed immediately. It is best fed while it is warm and steamy and it would appear most horses prefer it like this but otherwise should be used within 24 hours.What does steamed hay look and feel like?Steamed hay is totally different to soaked hay and is damp rather than wet. The treatment is not about how wet it is but how hot it is. You will find the hay in the middle of the bale/ hay net will be quite dry. This is because when the steam comes out of the spikes it is at its hottest. As the steam travels through the hay and meets the plastic lid it will cool slightly, condense to water and drop back on to the hay. This results in the outside of the hay being wetter than the inside.Does it matter if the hay dries out?It is best fed while it is warm, straight out of the Haygain but you will find it cools and dries rapidly as soon as the air gets to it. This has no effect on the hygienic quality or palatability. We recommend feeding the hay within 24 hours to prevent contamination from environmental sources.Sometimes there is a little bit of water coming out of the drain hole in the steamer chest during the steaming cycle. What should I do?That is normal it is usually condensation that collects under the lid during steaming.     How Antioxidants Fight Inflammation in Horses

Horse owners might turn to antioxidants as nutritional supplements to manage oxidative stress. In emerging research, scientists have shown these compounds also help reduce inflammation and support a process called mitophagythe targeted removal of damaged mitochondria in the cells.What Are Free Radicals?Free radicals are highly reactive, unstable molecules that can damage DNA, lipids, proteins, and other key cellular structures. While not all free radicals harm the bodysome aid the immune system and improve adaptation to exerciseexcessive levels can overwhelm the bodys antioxidant defenses. When this balance tips, oxidative stress occurs.A prime example of free radical production in horses comes from skeletal muscle mitochondria (the cells power plants) during intense exercise. Prolonged aerobic activity, such as galloping cross country, floods the body with free radicals, disrupting antioxidant systems and contributing to muscle dysfunction, fatigue, slow recovery, and reduced performance, reported researchers on a recent study (L.Stucchi et al., 2025).In addition, intense exercise may also activate inflammatory pathways, says Christoph Marycz, PhD, visiting professor at the University of California, Davis, and general director of the International Institute of Translational Medicine, in Wrocaw, Poland.Mitochondria, a major source of free radicals, can trigger inflammation when overworked or damaged. This damage leads to the release of inflammatory mediators and molecules called cytokines.Proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 and -6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha stimulate free radical production by activating various cellular pathways, explains Asim Duttaroy, PhD, professor of nutrition at the University of Oslo, in Norway.Its a vicious cycle. Free radicals fuel inflammation, and inflammation increases the production of free radicals, says Marycz. This cycle can damage muscle tissue, cause fatigue, and often lead to microinjuries or even serious injuries in sport horses.Duttaroy and colleagues have written that reactive oxygen species (ROS, a subset of reactive molecules that contain oxygen and can cause oxidative damagenot all ROS are free radicals, but all can contribute to oxidative stress) amplify inflammation by triggering signaling pathways that stimulate cytokine production (Bohl et al., 2024).Oxidative stress and inflammation are closely linked processes that can detrimentally affect the health and performance of horses, which experience oxidative stress if not managed properly, says Marycz. Even horses that arent in regular training can generate excessive oxidative stress if their workload doesnt match their condition or if theyre pushed beyond their limits. Poorly planned training, regardless of discipline, can lead to a buildup of oxidative stress, trigger inflammation, and ultimately increase the risk of injury.Antioxidants as a Defense for Horse HealthAntioxidants neutralize free radicals, protecting key cellular components such as DNA and membranes. The body produces antioxidantsconsidered endogenous, because they come from within the bodysuch as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. Horses also receive antioxidantsvia feed or supplements, so exogenous antioxidantsincluding vitamins A, C, and E, selenium, zinc, copper, omega-3 fatty acids such as DHA, coenzyme Q10, and alpha-lipoic acid.In another recent study Maryczs team found that antioxidants not only control oxidative stress but also reduce inflammation through mitophagy (Giercuszkiewicz-Hecold et al., 2025). Again, mitophagy is the process of selective degradation of damaged mitochondria that produce excessive free radicals, he says. Removing damaged mitochondria through mitophagy doesnt just reduce oxidative stress, but it also helps reduce inflammation because these damaged mitochondria act like alarm beacons within the cell. They release so-called danger signals (known scientifically as DAMPsdamage-associated molecular patterns), which alert the immune system and trigger inflammation.Therefore, mitophagy clears out the dysfunctional mitochondria and prevents the body from releasing inflammatory signals, he says. As a result, inflammation decreasesnot just because free radicals are gone, but because the entire source of cellular distress has been removed.Astaxanthin: A Dual-Action Antioxidant for Horses?Astaxanthin, found in microalgae, shrimp, and salmon, offers both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Marycz identifies this compound as especially useful for performance horses. High-level horses face chronic low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress, he says. Astaxanthin supports cellular health, recovery, and long-term performance.To explore astaxanthins benefits Maryczs team studied 12 healthy Arabian racehorses. Six received 250 milligrams of astaxanthin daily for 10 weeks. Researchers collected blood and isolated white blood cellsspecifically peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs)at baseline, Week 5, and Week 10.In the lab, researchers exposed these PBMCs to hydrogen peroxide to induce oxidative stress. Then they added astaxanthin and measured oxidative markers, mitophagy-related gene expression, and cytokine levels. Although the researchers took PBMCs from both astaxanthin-supplemented and control horses, they treated all cells the same in the in vitro experiment (i.e., adding astaxanthin after inducing oxidative stress). This approach let us isolate the direct cellular effects of astaxanthin, demonstrating its ability to reduce oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling and enhance mitochondrial maintenanceall key components in supporting recovery and performance in sport horses, says Marycz.Importantly, the results showed that adding astaxanthin to PMBCs reduced the hydrogen-peroxide-induced inflammatory response by decreasing the expression levels of all tested proinflammatory cytokines, he says.Astaxanthin also increased the expression of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD2 and glutathione peroxidase.     10 ways to reduce the risk of damaging these dynamic structuresTendons in horses legs help make them capable of phenomenal athletic efforts. | iStockTendons connect muscle to bone via their tough, fibrous strands. Wherever animals have bones and muscles, they have these collagen-fiber structures. But tendons in horses legs are unique in that they store high levels of quick energy, which they release after each step, making them capable of phenomenal athletic efforts.Its a brilliant design thats helped this rapid-reaction prey species outrun many of its predators across its evolutionary history, says Claire OBrien, MRes, PgDip, BSc (Hons), FHEA, of the University of Limerick, in Ireland, previously a researcher at Aberystwyth University, in the U.K.But the tradeoff for such a design is these weight-bearing tendons are especially prone to injury and reinjury, says Roger Smith, MA, VetMB, PhD, DEO, Dipl. ECVSMR, ECVS, FRCVS, professor of equine orthopedics at the U.K.s Royal Veterinary College Hawkshead Campus, in Hatfield.Both the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) and especially the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) are at risk for damage, meaning months or years of time off work or even the end of a horses athletic career.Ideally, wed reduce horses risk of sustaining tendon damage altogether, our sources say. Here are 10 ways to help.1. Understand biomechanics and biothermics of tendon function.Tendons are viscoelastic structures, meaning they stretch, and their mechanical behavior changes depending on how far and frequently theyre stretched, Smith says. Basically, tendons efficiently provide energy when weight-bearing but break down when stretched beyond their limits.The SDFT, for example, stretches up to 16% in high-impact situations such as jumping and galloping, Smith says.OBrien adds, If you could just watch a video of a horse coming to a fence in slow-motion and see that last step before takeoff, youd be absolutely shocked to see how much the distal limb drops down.A stretch extending beyond that 16%, however, can damage the fibers, says Smith. Even so, thats not the most common cause of injury. More often, he says, tendons get repeatedly loaded to the point of heating up. Researchers estimate core SDFT temperatures reach 110 F (43.5 C) during high-intensity training sessions, OBrien says.Thats certainly not what you want, since scientists have shown that tendon cellsknown as tenocytesincur microscopic levels of heat damage starting at 108.5 F (42.5 C). Over time repetitive microdamage builds up, causing injury and lameness.In fact, its the microdamagenot traumatic accidentsthats the leading cause of tendon injury and reinjury, OBrien says.Knowing this is an important first step in safeguarding tendons, our sources say.2. Know the Risk Factors When Selecting Your Athlete.Armed with that knowledge, buyers and breeders can make informed decisions when purchasing horses because good selection is a critical part of injury prevention, Smith says.Genetics play a role in tendon quality, and researchers have even identified tendon-injury-related genes in both humans and horses, he says. Yet, while genetic information can be helpful, its not essential, as the more dominant risk factors are those that the horse experiences during its career.The greatest risk factor is prior tendon injury, says Smith. In the case of a prepurchase exam, veterinarians should palpate for signs of previous lesions. Ultrasound can also be helpful because healed injuries are not always detectable otherwise. Old tendon injuries reveal a tendency for tendon problems, and the horse is more likely to re-injure compromised tissues.Importantly, this does not mean people should not buy horses with these risk factors, Smith says. Rather, they should be aware of the increased risks and prepared to be more vigilant or select a lower-intensity discipline that reduces chances for tendon injury.3. Feel, watch, and monitor tendons regularly.Early injury in some tendonsespecially the SDFT, which extends along the back of the horses leg from the carpus (knee) to the pasterncan be visible, says Christopher Elliott, BVSc (hons), MANZCVS, Dipl. ACVSMR, of Palm Beach Equine Clinic, in Wellington, Florida.So, its up to us to dot the Is and cross the Ts with paying attention to any change within that tendon, he explains. You should know what your horses leg feels like every day in terms of size, shape, contour, and temperature in all four limbs. Ultrasound examswhether regularly in healed tendons or after detecting a potential issue, can also provide critical feedback about how the tendon is coping with training, he adds.Smith recommends visual inspections, palpation, and even Doppler ultrasound (which measures blood flow and can pick up subtle signs the eye cant) checks after every high-intensity workout in previously injured regions and in areas of concern. This is currently one of the best strategies for prevention, he explains. While an injury cant be avoided altogether, detecting damage as early as possible and starting treatment can prevent further damage.4. Use Boots Wisely.Well-placed and well-fitted boots can help protect tendons and other structures from rare traumatic injuries that could happen when the horse clips himself or hits a jump, which some horses are particularly prone to doing, OBrien says.Nevertheless, these acute injuries are relatively uncommon compared to the risks of repetitive microdamage caused by overheating. We continue to use boots on the horse, knowing they can increase tendon temperature even further during sessions, she says.If riders prefer using boots to protect the legs from acute trauma, they should apply them shortly before intense exercise and remove them immediately afterward, she says.Simply airing the legs should help tissue temperatures drop, notes Smith. But cryotherapyice packs, cold hosing, or commercial ice bootsis also particularly effective.Ensure boots are as ventilated as possible and/or made of materials that do not generate heat, OBrien adds.Riders should check that any companies promoting such features in their products are transparent about any unbiased research to support their claims, she says.5. Use evidence-based training.Progressive training programs based on scientific evidence contribute to core and muscle strength while preventing overwork-related fatigue, Elliott explains: We know that too much exercise or inappropriate exercise increases risk factors for orthopedic injury, particularly in the soft tissues.Horse owners must also allow appropriate recovery time between training sessions, especially before advancing to more strenuous exercise, OBrien adds. Tendons need the chance to recover between the cyclical bouts and to have enough variety in the training and surfaces to allow time to recover in between sessions that tend to induce greater strain, like show jumping, galloping, and any kind of high-intensity work, she says.Furthermore, to limit repetitive movement that can strain the same tissues repeatedly, Elliott also recommends cross-training in different disciplines and on a variety of footing.Statistics have shown that the majority of tendon injuries occur during the training program, not during competitions, OBrien says. Its a difficult balancing act, but just make sure your program is as evidence-based, varied, and appropriate as possible.Warming up might or might not benefit horses weight-bearing tendons, becauseunlike humansthey spend so much time standing, says Smith. More research into warmups effects on tendon health is needed, he adds, but it remains essential for general musculoskeletal health, especially the joints.Meanwhile, breeders and trainers should follow evidence-based conditioning programs that help young horses tendons adapt to athletic work, Smith adds. Youve got to encourage animals to exercise in a controlled fashion when theyre young, while those tendons are still adaptablewhich is when theyre growing, he says.6. Recognize Your Horses Fitness.Tendons dont work individually. Therefore, our sources say its important to maintain a whole horse view of the animal when managing tendon health.Owners must recognize the overall health and fitness of their horses to ensure that the legs are as orthopedically comfortable as they can be, Elliott says.OBrien and Smith agree. We need to be objectively monitoring the training were making horses undergo, says OBrien, whether thats tracking our distance, gaits, speed, and other stats with an equestrian smartphone app, or going higher tech, under veterinary supervision, with heart rate and other monitors.7. Notice Hoof Shapes and Angles.The horses hoof angle could make a significant difference in tendon strain, says Elliott. You need well-balanced, well-maintained feet that have a nice, short breakover and are appropriate to the specific sports discipline, he says. (Experts define breakover as the moment the heels leave the ground and begin to rotate over the toe.)Critically, people need to understand how bar shoes, wedges, or anything that elevates the heel could affect various tendons, says Aimee Colbath, VMD, MS, DACVS-LA, assistant professor in the section of large animal surgery at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, in Ithaca, New York.Heel elevation reduces strain on the DDFT, which can create more strain on the SDFT. This is a common misconception, and its a bit counterintuitive, she says.Still, it makes anatomical sense, she adds. The DDFT attaches to the third phalanx, or coffin bone, but the SDFT attaches at the upper portion of the second phalanx, or short pastern bone. By raising that foot up, youre raising the thing that the DDFT attaches to, she says. Thats not true for the SDFT.Smith says we need more scientific evidence linking injury risk and specific shoeing techniques. Depending on the horses conformation, there is a lot that can be done with such techniques to help him.8. Think Smart About Footing.Footing science is complex; even researchers dont always agree on whats best. In part, thats because surfaces affect different tendons in a variety of ways.For example, deeper, softer, more sinkable ground might contribute to higher strains on the SDFT, says Colbath. But other scientists studying racehorse injury risk suggest the opposite. In the latter situation this is thought to be because softer ground slows racehorses, which reduces peak tendon loading. In other disciplines, with lower maximal speeds, we might not see the same effect.As a rule, owners should seek out consistent footing. Avoid uneven surfaces, poorly maintained surfaces, or surfaces that are either too hard or too soft, Elliott says.9. Believe in Time Off.Researchers have shown that tendons such as the SDFT undergo significant structural changes after intense workoutswith maximal changes at 48 hours. The tendon is really doing a lot of hard work trying to repair any of the minor damage that occurred, OBrien explains.When SDFTs have 72 hours to recover, they appear as they did prior to the workout on ultrasound imaging. This suggests good, strong repair, she says.By contrast, a lack of sufficient recovery time could lead to even more microdamage. So, if you were to, say, gallop the horse on a Monday and then do show jumping on Wednesday, research would lead you to believe that you may be more likely to cause a significant rupture of that tendon than if youd let it rest for three days, she says.Meanwhile, owners of horses recovering from tendon injuries must respect and follow the rest and rehab programs their vets provide, Elliott adds. These can last months and follow a slowly progressive return to exercise, which allows the tendon to fully heal.10. Support and Follow Ongoing Tendon ResearchMany scientists worldwide are studying how to protect horses tendons from and treat injuries. Several studies are already underwaysuch as investigating genetics, risk factors, the influence of footing and shoeing, and biomarkers of early pre-lesion changes. These all could offer important insight into how we manage our athletes for optimal tendon health.Smiths team, for example, is currently developing molecular inhibitors designed to stop the progression of tendon degeneration while its still at a microscopic phase. This approach could address damage before anyone even notices it or it escalates to injury.Individuals interested in supporting research can donate to their favorite vet school or charity that supports equine research.Take-Home Message Tendon injuries might be a common curse among sport horses, but that doesnt mean they have to be.
