    Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Horses
    Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in horses and the most common cancer of the equine eye. Although it is typically slow to metastasize, it can be locally invasive in areas where complete surgical removal is challenging.Heres what to watch for to catch this cancer early and what to do if your horse has it.What is Squamous Cell Carcinoma?The name itselfsquamous cell carcinomacan sound confusing and even intimidating, so lets start with the basics. What is a squamous cell, anyway? These are normal cells in the body. They are primarily found in the skin, particularly at mucocutaneous borders. These borders are where dry skin intersects with a mucous membrane, such as the line between skin and the lips, nostrils, anus, genitals, and eyelids.Squamous cells are found at mucocutaneous borders (where dry skin intersects a mucous membrane), such as along the eyelids. Photo by ccestep8/Adobe StockUnderstanding the normal location of this cell type then provides context for where SCC is commonly found: in or around the eye, the genitalia and anus, and lips/nose.The term carcinoma refers to a type of cancer that starts within skin cells or the lining of internal organs. In addition to SCC, there are a few other types of carcinomas, such as basal cell carcinoma, which is rare in horses but common in humans.SCC development is related to sun and subsequent UV exposure. Its no surprise, then, that SCC is common in horses who can spend most of their life outside, accumulating UV skin damage.However, horses with lots of non-pigmented (pink) skin on their faces, such as horses with wide blazes or bald faces where eyes and muzzles have pink skin, have a higher rate of SCC.Breeds that tend to have extended white on their faces such as Clydesdales, Belgians, Appaloosas, and some Paints have a higher risk of developing SCC than other breeds. Lighter-colored horses, such as palominos and cremellos, are also at higher risk for SCC.Horses with lots of non-pigmented skin on their faces, such as cremellos, are at higher risk for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Photo by Mark J. Barrett/Adobe StockWhat To Look ForSo what does SCC look like in a horse? Typically, this tumor initially appears as a small, raised lump or nodule under the skin. SCC within the eye may give the cornea a flat or roughened opaque appearance.Early SCC can be easily missed due to its small size and sometimes hidden location. As the tumor grows, it can erupt, become ulcerated, and start to impinge on neighboring tissues. SCC of the eyelid can be particularly problematic. As the tumor enlarges, it may start to pull at the lid. This can either rub the cornea or pull outward, resulting in the inability of the horse to fully close his eye.Because it is easier to remove when it is small, the best course of action with SCC is early detection. When you groom your horse, keep an eye out for odd bumps or lesions. Owners of white-faced horses should be especially observant of their horses facial features on a regular basis, including a close look at the eye itself.SCC on the eyelid typically starts off looking like a small scab, while SCC at the corner of the eye or within the third eyelid is typically a raised, pink mass. Horses with ocular SCC may also have eye discharge.Early detection is extremely important, as treatment before the tumor grows will help the eventual outcome. For male horses, make the most of sheath cleaning: this is the perfect time for an inspection.SCC Treatment Options for HorsesWhat should you do if you find something suspicious on your horse? The first step is to have your vet out. Although you may have a very high suspicion of SCC based on the lumps location or your horses history or pigment pattern, you cant diagnose SCC based on visual examination alone.Sometimes SCC can be confused with scar tissue, other types of tumors (such as papillomas or sarcoids), or even a skin allergy. A biopsy, or tissue sample, is the best way to definitively diagnose this tumor.Once your vet confirms the diagnosis, its time to talk treatment options. As with most tumors, its location, size, and involvement of neighboring tissues heavily influence treatment options and prognosis.Surgical removal is a common choice, but location of the tumor dictates treatment success rate. For example, SCC at the corner of the eyelid can be very challenging to reconstruct after removal of the diseased tissue. Other times, SCC may grow into deeper structures around the eye. In these circumstances, total enucleation may be the best option for the horses future.Due to the difficulty of removing SCC at the corner of the eye, sometimes complete enucleation is recommended. These adjunct therapies occur at the time of surgery and may need to be repeated.Cryotherapy (freezing) is a common adjunct therapy that can be done on site at your barn. Your vet will apply liquid nitrogen, which is -320 Fahrenheit, to the edges where the tumor was removed. This helps destroy any leftover cancer cells.Some radiation and chemotherapy options are also available. Depending on the regimen, they may require a visit or two to a referral hospital for application.Photodynamic dye therapy (PDT) is a relatively newer option for SCC treatment. This therapy involves injecting a dye containing photosensitive compounds into the affected area. This dye is taken up selectively by the cancer cells. Next, a focused beam of light using a specific wavelength is directed at the diseased tissue. The light reacts with the dye, creating a skin reaction that kills the tissue.Because only the cancer cells take up the dye, other nearby healthy tissue is relatively unaffected, providing a much more focused treatment compared to radiation and chemotherapy. Prognosis after surgery and adjunct therapy for SCC depends heavily on the size and location of the tumor and how locally invasive it is. Horse owners should note, too, that once a horse has had SCC, he is at higher risk of developing it again.Prevention TipsAlong with regular close monitoring of your horses skin, reducing your horses exposure to UV radiation is another tool for SCC prevention.     Alec Lochore has been named as the cross-country course designer for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.It was a unanimous decision to appoint the FEI Level 4 course designer and technical delegate at an in-person meeting today at the governing bodys headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.Mike Etherington-Smith who designed both the 2000 (Sydney) and 2008 (Beijing) Olympic courses will act as course advisor.I am humbled, honoured and delighted to have been asked to design the cross-country track for the Olympic Games LA28, said Alec.It will be a great challenge. One which I am looking forward to immensely.The biggest showcaseAlec was the eventing manager for the 2012 Games in London, a role that required him to oversee the cross-country planning and test events at Greenwich Park as well as at Tokyo 2020. I am fortunate enough to have been involved with the organisation and planning of several Olympic Games, and each Olympics is unique and special, said Alec. The Olympics is the biggest showcase that our sport that any sport has, and to be chosen as course designer is very exciting.The 53-year-old has also held roles at both World and European championships, served two terms on the FEI Eventing Committee, and has been a member of various FEI Working Groups.Excellent credentialsHe holds excellent credentials as a first-class eventing course designer but also as a technical delegate and an organiser, said FEI President Ingmar De Vos.     Half halts: how and when to use them correctly
    We use a system of aids to communicate with our horses with the aim that our aids will be barely visible to the observer and this includes half halts. The natural aids are seat, leg and rein aids. Lets think of them as words we speak silently to our horse. When we combine our aids in a sequence we might think of these as words forming a simple sentence.A half halt is perhaps the breathing space between the words or even the sentences themselves.It is a way of rebalancing; a tiny moment of pause where we are preparing for the next movement or decision or response; a signal to the horse that the conversation is becoming more nuanced.In this article Im going to talk about whats going on when you half halt, how you might experience the feeling of influencing your horses way of going, and where to start if you and your horse havent thought about half halts yet.The aim of a half haltHalf halts might seem like the domain of the dressage horse, but whatever your preferred discipline whether you are riding in an an arena or hacking out being able to ride in a safe and balanced way is important. This stems from how you communicate with your horse using a system of clear, consistent aids to guide and support them.The FEI states that the aim of half halt is to increase attention, improve balance and collection of the horse. There is a longer explanation and lots of really useful insights from riders and trainers, so its possible to take an in depth look at the subject.So much information can be overwhelming, however, and I will give you some exercises and explanations you might find useful on this page.When theyre usedA half halt can encourage a horse to shift their balance, transferring the weight they would naturally carry on their forehand backwards, so that they begin to use their hind quarters to support their weight.Over time and with correct training, this will develop the horses ability to work in collection as they achieve the scales of training.Its important to say here that it takes many years to train a horse to be physically and mentally prepared to work at an advanced level.The half halt is going to be an important part of your communication system at every level. Whenever we ask our horse to do things as simple as:Change pace or tempoAdjust their stridePrepare to do something such as changing the reinArrive at a junction to cross the road Ride in between fences in good rhythm and balanceThe list is endless and often we are already using a form of halt halt without realising it. Riders seat aidsSo lets break it down into how the aids work together when you ask for a half halt.First your posture and how you sit in the saddle are going to have a role in developing and maintaining rhythm and balance. Where you look and how you breathe will also have an impact on how you communicate with your seat aids. For example, think about how you follow your horse with your seat when riding up and downhill. When you want to stay in balance with your horse in a trot-canter transition, it can be helpful to think about riding uphill. This can help you find and maintain your balance so that you follow your horses movement. Developing an independent seat is important too, as you need to learn not to use the reins to support you. Hanging on tightly to the reins or pulling back without meaning to is like inadvertently applying a brake to a car and wondering why things feel erratic. Once we have a supple and balanced seat we can use our reins to communicate with our horses.The aim here is to develop an elastic contact so that we can again follow the horsess movement and encourage them to seek a contact with the rein.Leg aidsThere are sequences of leg aids to learn and become familiar with. Its worth thinking in terms of, what is my leg asking the horse?When you put your inside leg on you are asking your horse to step forward with their hind leg. With training, you will be able to influence the activity from the hind legs to develop impulsion, straightness and (later) collection.Think of the half halt as being an advance request.You are activating your horse with your leg asking them to go forwards. Your hand receives this new energy and so does your horse, who in that moment needs a decision and further instructions from you. You receive the energy and close your fingers around the rein. As the half halt is a rebalancing request, you then allow your hand to follow the horses movement. By half halting they have taken more weight on their hind quarters and lightened the forehand. Space to breatheEvery half halt implies the need for greater animationThis phrase in a book by Erik Herbermann really resonated with me. Egon von Neindorff also said: Drive. Receive (sustain or take up the energy) become lighter again.When I read this, it speaks of the lightness of movement and a sense of space to soften and breathe, to feel a moment of suspension in between the power and later cadence of the trot. There is an artistry described in his work that transports me to the arena and my enjoyment of finding these shared moments with my horses. When we then hack out and find these moments again, there is another dimension to experience. Riding and competing is something I enjoy so much that I find it hard to articulate the feelings of challenge and effort and love for the horses who communicate through movement and emotion. When I read his words Im reconnecting with those moments. With my coaching hat on, I think part of the joy of schooling is to find a way to communicate with each horse we meet. So as a rider, we can become familiar with the effect of the half halt and the influence it has on our horses balance.How to half haltPerhaps you havent knowingly ridden a half halt yet.Lets keep it simple by first trying this pattern and enjoying the feeling of riding your horse. Ride a 20m circle in working trotThen go large in working trotPick a good moment to go forwards to walkMake a change of rein across the diagonalPick up working trot again Ride a 20m circleGo large and return to walk, before changing the rein and repeating the exercise.Your priority is to notice the trot rhythm and aim to maintain the same rhythm around the circle and onto the long side.Next notice what happens in your downwards and upwards transitions.Did your horse understand?Were you able to keep your balance and remember to breathe as well?Did your horse find the exercise easier on one rein than the other?Do the transitions flow seamlessly from one pace to the next?TransitionsAfter a walk break, ride back onto a circle.This time, though, ride a transition to walk and then back to trot as you cross the centre line. Aim for a smooth transition, allow your horse to relax into the walk and then trot on again staying on the circle. Repeat this pattern with this transition a few times and think about what it feels like. Do you have a consistent elastic contact? Are you finding it easy to sit tall? When you apply your leg aid does your horse respond by stepping forward with their hind leg?Almost-walkNext, when you are confident with the exercise on both reins, try an almost-walk transition. Use your leg to active the trot, sit taller, and close your fingers around the reins. However, this time before you walk, open your fingers a little and as you apply your leg to go forwards to trot again, allow your hands to follow the horse.If youre not quite following, try thinking of it this way: although you half started a downward transition, you have changed your mind and your hands must allow the horse to trot forwards again as your legs say lets repair the trot rhythm.Remember this is not about letting go of the reins.You still need to be keeping the conversation going through the reins and encouraging your horse to be seeking the rein, stretching their neck forward and taking the rein.Feeling a half-haltThe almost-walk transition is about preparing both horse and rider for the feeling they are seeking in a half halt that is, a moment to rebalance.If your horse becomes unsettled or tense change things up. You might find they enjoy a canter or to do a serpentine that allows them to settle into a trot rhythm with the chance to focus on what you are asking. As with all new exercises, take your time and help your horse understand the exercise.Be sure to praise them for trying to answer your questions and let them have regular breaks.We want them to enjoy their schooling sessions!The non-transitionA natural progression for the almost-walk transition is the non-transition, which almost shortens the trot stride with a subtle half halt that could become a walk transition.Its really about asking for the horse to be a little more balanced in their trot work. This is where timing plays a part, because as a rider you are asking your horse to sit and take their weight back in order to lighten their forehand. This half halt must not come just from the hand, we are not going to pull the rein or damage the rhythmical flow of the trot by stopping / blocking our horse through the rein.Be creative with your arena space and include circles, diamonds, squares and straight lines asking for transitions and non transitions in different places. These schooling figures are going to feel very different when riding horses at varying levels of training.Half halts too feel different on horses who are further on in their training. A Grand Prix horse is very powerful and established with a greater degree of collection and balance. The riders job is to be able to ride quietly and effectively, to manage the timing and complexity of the aids in order to communicate with the advanced horse.Be patient with yourself and your horse as you work on your balance and communication together.     Why feeding a horse from the floor is best practice
    Mother Nature designed horses to eat from the floor, yet haynets, racks, and over-the-door buckets designed for feeding off the ground are a familiar sight on many a yard.Horses in the wild will spend 16-18 hours grazing every day, mostly with their heads down to eat grass. A small percentage of their time will be spent with their heads up to forage trees and shrubs and enabling your horse to do this at their leisure is a great way to enrich their diet.Why the ground is bestThere are a number of physiological reasons why eating with their head down is best for our horses.Teeth alignmentWe know that horse teeth are better aligned when the head is down and the jaw is able to move more accurately, says independent nutritionist Donna Case of The Horse Feed Guru.Freedom of the jawThe mandible (jaw bone), when down in a grazing position, can move up and down, from side to side, and forward and back without restriction, adds Donna.Feeding from a high position causes the lower jaw to slide back, altering the alignment of the teeth and chewing patterns and it increases the risk of ramps and hooks developing.Longer chewingThe horse is also likely to chew for longer with their head down and be more thorough about the way they chew, says Donna.The more they chew, the more saliva they produce before they swallow. Saliva acts as an acid buffer in the stomach and helps to reduce the risk of gastric ulcers, meaning an overall healthier digestive system.Cleaner airwaysA lower eating position also encourages airway drainage and that helps to reduce the inhalation of feed particles and dust.They move moreWhen horses are out at grass, its not just the fact that theyre eating little and often, its also that they move a step forwards with every few mouthfuls, explains Donna.A horse in the wild will move several kilometres in a day while grazing. Movement plays a big part in terms of gas and dropping removal. Movement helps to keep the food and gas travelling along the digestive system and so horses who are suddenly put on box rest could be at risk of colic.Muscular comfortWatching how your horse grazes in the field can reveal a lot about their musculoskeletal comfort and asymmetry.Horses who are comfortable and symmetrical graze and move around without needing to lift up their heads. They graze with both the left and right front legs forward evenly, says biomechanics expert Gillian Higgins who runs Horses Inside Out.Asymmetrical horses, and those with possible discomfort, will graze in a comfortable position for a while and will then raise their head before moving to the next spot.Uncomfortable horses will also widen their forelimbs in order to graze, spending more time with a preferred foreleg forward than the other, she adds. This discomfort and asymmetry are usually also seen in their biomechanics and how they move. It can cause them to become mechanically lame, as do issues with uneven hooves.PostureThe neck and back ligaments play a major part in supporting the horses posture, and different feeding postures can have an impact on them some good and some bad. The nuchal ligament acts as an energy-saving device that reduces the amount of muscular effort required to support, raise and lower the head, hold it in position and maintain the correct alignment of the cervical vertebrae, Gillian explains. The nuchal ligament suspends a horses head when hes sleeping standing up. Its more elastic than other ligaments which allows it to stretch when the horse is ridden in an outline.The nuchal ligament controls and stabilises movement of the spine at the highest point of the withers.This acts as a pivot, which alongside the supraspinous ligament, helps to keep the back in the correct position, continues Gillian. The nuchal and the supraspinous ligaments are vital for maintaining spinal posture.The nuchal ligamentHead downWhen the horses head is down, the nuchal ligament is pulled tight. This, in turn, pulls on the supraspinous ligament, which prises the thoracic vertebrae at the withers slightly apart, causing the back to rise and the ribcage to lift.Head upWhen the head is raised, the neck becomes hollow and the nuchal ligament loosens, which causes the horses back to hollow.Continually going in this hollow outline results in horses being more prone to developing issues with their back.Pros Gillian says the pros of feeding a horse off the floor are:It encourages better alignment of the spine.The nuchal and supraspinous ligaments support the weight of the back and abdomen with little muscular effort, which reduces muscle tension.Supports the correct alignment through the cervical vertebrae.Keeps the pharynx, trachea and oesophagus open and straight, which improves function.Helps to develop the correct muscles and structures involved in supporting the back and carrying the weight of the rider.In a head low position, mucus removes dust from the air passages through the nose.Encourages better digestion and production of saliva.Enables efficient chewing which also has big benefits the horses digestive system.Teeth are better aligned so that wear is more even.With the head in a low position, the parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated which, in turn, encourages a state of relaxation.The horse can become caught in haynets that are tied too low.ConsHowever its not all good news. Gillian also points out the following downsides to giving a horse food on the floor:Difficult to control how quickly a horse eats, which is an important factor for those on a controlled diet.Horses who are messy in the stable and/or box walk can mix their hay into their bed, which is both a waste and can work out costly for the owner.Advantages of haynetsAlthough feeding horses hay from haynets and racks placed high up can have some negative impacts on a horses musculoskeletal system and back, there are some occasions when feeding from chest height rather than the floor can actually be beneficial.When feeding from hedges, trees and shrubs that are quite tall, horses will eat with their head and neck high up, which is quite natural, explains Gillian. When eating from chest height and upwards, horses also tend to stand square in front because they dont need to spread their front feet to reach the ground. This can be beneficial for a horse with marked front feet asymmetry, as well as a horse with a consistently asymmetrical grazing stance.When a horses head is held in a higher position, they can also more evenly distribute the weight between his front and back feet, instead of the weight being pulled forward onto the forehand.Another advantage of haynets is that dust and small particles fall from the hay, meaning that they are less likely to be ingested or inhaled. It is also easier to keep the stable tidy as you can easily sweep underneath the net.When haynets are badOf course, there are also downsides to feeding from haynets and racks.It encourages the horse to stand in a poor posture, with their head high and back hollowed while eating for long periods. This causes the spaces between the spinous processes to become smaller, which can put pressure on the ligaments in the spine and on the muscular skeletal system.Another downside is that a high head position stimulates the sympathetic nervous system that is associated with anxiety, tension and the flight response. Also, as the horse pulls the hay from the net, the jerking movement can cause his back muscles to contract.If this is repeated for hours every day, it will develop the back muscles that create back extension, which isnt ideal for ridden horses.Relocate haynetsHaynets that are tied particularly high are also more likely to encourage the horse to pull the hay out to one side with a twisting motion of his head.We know that horses, like us, prefer one side to another, so if their haynet is always tied in the same place, such as to one side of the stable door, theres a chance that the horse will always pull the hay out to the same side, towards the door, says Gillian.
