I have an upper-level dressage horse that is in a rigorous training program six days a week. He is currently in good condition with a body condition score (BCS) of 5. Because he is working hard, Im concerned about his protein intake. What are the best sources of high-quality protein for me to look for or add to his feed?A. Protein is an important part of your horses diet and is one of the six required nutrient classes for horses. Taking a keen interest in your horses protein intake is important because when a horses workload increases, his or her protein requirement increases as well.Proteins are a major component of body tissues and play key roles in enzymes, hormones, and antibodies, so consuming a quality protein source is imperative to working horses health. Protein is also necessary for muscle development and repair, which is necessary for horses in work.Amino Acids in Equine DietsProtein molecules are composed of amino acids. There are 21 main amino acids, 10 of which are essential, meaning the horse cannot synthesize them and we must provide them in the diet. The National Research Councils (NRC) Nutrient Requirements of Horses, published in 2007, provides a recommendation for horses crude protein intake as well as lysine intake. Lysine is the first-limiting amino acid for horses, meaning it is the first essential amino acid in which they become deficient. Although equine researchers do not yet know how much of each essential amino acid horses need, we know that lysine, threonine, and methionine are the first three limiting.High-quality protein is readily digestible for the horse in the small intestine if the protein source is providing the essential amino acids in correct amounts. A lower-quality protein source might not provide the key amino acids or be as digestible.Evaluating Protein Content in Your Horses DietBefore you focus on the protein in your supplemental products, you should first look at the hay, which almost always makes up most of the horses diet. If you are concerned about your horses protein intake, first order a hay analysis. Simply adding more protein to your horses diet without analyzing your hay first can eventually have negative effects on your horses health.Excess and Deficiency in Equine DietsIn equine diets too much or too little protein can cause health issues. Performance horses maintained on high-quality hay with supplemental feeds are unlikely to have protein deficiencies.Excess dietary protein is not typically an issue for healthy horses because they can break it down and excrete the excess, but it can put unnecessary strain on the kidneys and liver. Horses do not store protein for later use the way they do carbohydrates and fats.When horses consume excess protein for a prolonged period, it can increase the horses heat production and urine output and create a significant ammonia smell in the stall that negatively affects the respiratory tract. Additionally, protein is a costly feed ingredient so providing it in excess makes the ration unnecessarily expensive.Choosing A Quality Protein Source for Your HorseWhen evaluating protein in the diet, look at the crude protein your hay and feed supply and evaluate the quality of the protein source. Hay provides protein to the horse, and legumes such as alfalfa serve as high-quality protein sources. Other high-quality protein sources include soybean meal, canola meal, flax, whey, sunflower meal, and a variety of legumes. Equine nutritionists typically regard cereal grains (i.e. oats or corn) as lower-quality protein sources.When reading the label of the feed you have chosen for your horse, instead of just looking at the crude protein percentage, you should also take a close look at the ingredient list. Take note of the protein sources and be conscious of where they lie on the list. Ideally, the higher-quality sources should be at the top of the ingredient list, meaning they make up most of the products protein content. THEHORSE.COMNutritional Strategies for Managing Horses With Insulin DysregulationOverweight horses are at an increased risk of developing metabolic problems. | Adobe StockMetabolic disorders are becoming more common in horses and, without proper care, can lead to endocrinopathic laminitis. Managing these conditions effectively can be challenging. For horse owners, understanding insulin dysregulation (ID) and implementing effective prevention and management strategies is critical for the long-term health of horses with ID.What is Insulin Dysregulation in Horses?Insulin dysregulation compromises the horses ability to metabolize soluble carbohydrates. The broad term encompasses both tissue insulin resistance and elevated blood insulin (hyperinsulinemia). Not all horses exhibit both conditions, though; some only have insulin resistance, while others may have elevated insulin levels after eating, says Erica Macon, MS, PAS, PhD, an assistant professor at Texas A&M University, in College Station. Either condition is a cause for concern in the development of endocrinopathic laminitis.When a healthy horse eats nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC, starch and sugar) the digestive enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract break them down into glucose. When blood glucose levels rise, the pancreas releases insulin, which helps the glucose move from the blood into tissues. This then reduces blood glucose levels, and the pancreas reduces insulin secretion in response.These horses tend to have some degree of insulin resistance, where insulin fails to do its normal job after a meal rich in NSCs of helping the absorbed glucose to get from the blood and into tissues like the muscle, to reduce blood glucose concentrations back to normal, says Shannon Pratt-Phillips, MS, PhD, PAS, a professor in the Department of Animal Science at North Carolina State University, in Raleigh. In these horses the pancreas releases very high amounts of insulin to try to deal with the glucose load and its (insulins) reduced effectiveness, but glucose concentrations fail to come back to normal as quickly as healthy horses. Horses with ID tend to also have elevated insulin concentrations even without a previous meal.Hyperinsulinemia has been shown to cause laminitis, a painful condition characterized by inflammation of the laminae (the tissue that connects the hoof wall to the underlying coffin bone) that potentially leads to separation and rotation of the coffin bone. In these cases its referred to as endocrinopathic laminitis.Which Horses Are at Risk for ID?Multiple risk factors can contribute to an equid developing ID. There is both a genetic and environmental component, says Macon. Have you ever been asked during a doctors appointment if diabetes runs in your family? Equids experience a similar genetic predisposition to ID and obesity. For some equids their genetics simply arent in their favor. For example, Spanish breeds and most pony breeds are more prone to being overweight and developing ID.Horses with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID, formerly equine Cushings disease) are more likely to develop ID. Researchers are still working to fully understand this connection, says Macon.Although obesity and disorders such as PPID are primary risk factors, horses that do not match that description can also have metabolic problems. It is possible for a horse to be ID and be lean, or an obese horse to have normal glucose and insulin responses to a simple carbohydrate meal, says Pratt-Phillips. Horses that are fed high amounts of NSCs on a regular basis may also have lower insulin sensitivity.Even if your horse does not match the usual at-risk description, it is important for him to maintain a healthy body condition to reduce his risk of developing metabolic problems. Your horse should not exceed a body condition of 6 on the Henneke nine-point system. You should always be able to feel a horses ribs, says Pratt-Phillips.Feeding Horses With IDIf your veterinarian diagnoses your horse with ID, consider a few key aspects of his management. If the animal is obese, work with an equine nutritionist to adjust his diet for weight loss. However, if he has been diagnosed with PPID, work closely with your veterinarian to medically manage him as well.Regardless of the underlying cause, horses with ID should eat a diet low in NSCs, which you can calculate based on the feed label. I use NSC (water-soluble carbohydrates plus starch) because it includes fructans, says Macon. Now, not every horse responds to fructans, but some horses do, so I like to err on the side of caution.The percentage of NSCs in the diet is often a driving factor for horse owners in determining if a forage or concentrate is going to be safe for their ID horse, but the industry is moving away from relying on a percentage.When we think about a percentage, we dont take into consideration where that starch is coming from or how bioavailable it is, so breaking down the actual load on a grams per kilogram body weight (BW) seems to be the better option, says Macon. Up until my work, there wasnt any NSC threshold studies done in metabolic horses. Researchers have now found 0.1 grams of NSC per kilogram of body weight per meal to be the safe threshold for metabolic horses.Therefore, when designing your horses feeding plan, find the percentage of NSC in the feed, the amount of that feed your horse receives at each meal, and your horses body weight. Use the below calculation to ensure you do not exceed 0.1 g NSC per kg BW per meal.Calculating NSCs in Your Horses MealInformation NeededHorses ideal BWNSC % of commercial grainFeeding rate for horses ideal BW based on manufacturers instructionsCalculationConvert horses weight to kilograms.Convert total feeding rate to grams.Ensure NSC % is on a dry matter basis. Pelleted concentrates are 95% dry matter. Textured concentrates are 90% dry matter.Multiply the NSC on a dry matter basis and the feeding rate in kilograms.Divide the grams of NSC in the concentrate by the animals BW in kilograms.Example CalculationHorses body weight = 500 kgFeeding rate of concentrate = 1,800 gNSC % = 12% on a dry matter basis(0.12 NSC dry matter basis) x (1,800 g) = 216 g NSC in the concentrate fed daily216 g NSC / 500 kg = 0.43 g NSC provided in the concentrate dailyIf your horses meal is too high in NSCs, you can split the feeding into more meals per day so that each one is smaller and will have less glucose, says Pratt-Phillips.When choosing your horses forage, consider both the NSC content of the hay and the time the horse takes to consume it after each feeding. While less research exists in this area, the current recommendation involves providing low-NSC hay (below 10% on a dry matter basis) and encourages prolonged feeding time. Implementing slow-feeding strategies to make sure that the horse is having a smaller quantity over a longer period of time I think is the safest bet that we can go with right now versus throwing two flakes on the ground and letting them consume it rapidly, says Macon.Take-Home MessageOur scientific understanding of equine metabolic problems constantly expands. If you add some water and store them at room temperature, the amount of hypoglycin A is much higher than if the tissues are stored at lower temperatures.Whats interesting is that if you just have the whole seeds and store them in the same ways, we dont see the same effect. Theres something about the seeds being ground up and then stored with some water and at room temperature or a higher temperature that produces hypoglycin A, Professor Piercy continued.We think potentially, this may be a defence mechanism for plants. Potentially hypoglycin A production goes up in the plant material when its ground up in other words, when its being eaten.Toxicity levels in same tree vary by yearSeparate research, which was funded by the Horse Trust, has found that levels of hypoglycin Ain the same tree can change from year to year.Researchers developed a test for measuring the levels of hypoglycin A in a horses blood as well as in plant material. The same 14 trees across the middle and south of England were measured for three consecutive years and in 2017 the hypoglycin A levels were higher. One of the active areas of investigation for us at the moment is trying to work out, why do sycamore trees produce more hypoglycin A in their in their material in some years compared with others?, said Professor Piercy. We dont know the answer to that at the moment, but of course that may have a role to play in the susceptibility of horses to the toxin.Hypoglycin A remains for weeksResearch has also shown that hypoglycin A remains in sycamore seedlings for several weeks after theyve been mowed and if you cut sycamore seedlings, the amount of hypoglycin A goes up in the first 48 hours. If you try to kill sycamore seedlings with herbicides, they retain hypoglycin A.Professor Piercy believes that some horses may even like the taste of hypoglycin A.I think its possible, although I dont have any proof for this, that some horses actually like the taste of hypoglycin A. Maybe they actively try and eat this stuff, he said.To help avoid your horse coming into contact with sycamore seedlings, Professor Piercy advises feeding from hay racks so your horse doesnt eat seedlings on the ground and bringing horses in at night to stop them eating the seeds without knowing about it.What is atypical myopathy?When a horse eats sycamore seeds or seedlings, the toxin (hypoglycin A) found in the plant can make its way to the horses muscles. This causes the muscle cells to become inactive and even die.Atypical myopathy has a sudden onset and is fatal in around 70% of affected horses.Muscle damage commonly affects muscles that are used during standing and breathing, as well as the heart muscle, meaning that a wide range of clinical signs are displayed.When the muscle cells become damaged, they release muscle enzymes that build up in the organs. Irish Sport Horses take 41% of 1st places in 43 classes this week.A fantastic week for Irish breeders as they have produced 76% of the podium places across all classes in the results this week. (Better than the Irish trainers at Cheltenham?). There is such a spread of breeders that it is hard to find anyone mentioned twice. Another sign that horse breeding is not elite but practiced by many who are all making Ireland great. Perhaps the TDs should read these results and have a little more respect for Irish breeders and all that goes into making the Irish Sport Horse so influential. ANEQUESTRIANLIFE.COMMeet the New PonyWith Vintage now gone, my Pony Man was alone. He had moments were he seemed fine, and others were he was very upset. There was no way I was going to leave him by himself, so I weighed my options.I could sell Pony and have no equines on the property.I could bring Stu home, and worry about him jumping the fence, and also not really having a great place to ride.I could find a little pony for the kids, and then they could ride together and grow up with ponies.So naturally I choose grow up with ponies. It really seemed like the best option. Get them addicted to horses young, and we can all share in the fun. Plus theres no way Im giving up Pony Man. You can pry him from my cold dead fingers before I let him go anywhere.I did some searching, talked to many sellers, watched videos, and explored my options. I decided I really wanted a bitty little pony (or mini) that would be a friend to the kids, and also could be the third horse, of the farm.Third Horse The horse that keeps the buddy of your original horse company when you go out for a ride. Your original horse needs a friend, but then it gets lonely when you go out riding so you have to get a third horse to keep your buddy horse company. Complications may arise when you take a friend out riding, then you might need a 4th horse to keep the 3rd horse company.Thats how I came across the little black and white pony. I was talking to the seller, The Pony Lady, Dealer in Fine Ponies, (I gave her that title) about a different pony, but that one sold before I paid for her. So I asked about other ponies available, and he was brought up.Hes a little black and white paint, perhaps a pony, but also maybe a mini. His sales receipt says, Pony, very descriptive. He was calm, very basic training, as in, not ready for a horse show, but ready to be the perfect leadline pony. He was bred by the Amish, and hes trained for both riding and driving. I thought it might be fun to try driving at some point, so that was a nice, completely unneeded, perk.See his dramatic, late night entrance here.It was off to a great start. He was perfectly behaved on our late night walk through the neighborhood. The very next day after his arrival, I decided to have his shoes pulled. I dont like dealing with horse shoes, they are very annoying and unless theres special circumstances, everyone is going barefoot. So far, in my over 20 years of horse ownership, there has been nothing that would require my horses to have shoes.So less than 24 hours after his arrival, the farrier was out to pull his shoes. This was the first test, and unfortunately he did fail. He was not happy about his feet being handled. I have no idea how they even did his feet prior to this because, to put it nicely, he was a bit of an unruly little scoundrel. He either has extreme trust issues, or he was manhandled or tranquilized every time his feet were done, because I dont know how they managed to get 4 shoes on that pony.He kept trying to kick the farrier, so she only managed to get off 3 of his shoes. She left with a dire warning that she would not be servicing this pony unless he got his act together.That was disappointing. I was really expecting a pony described as a perfect kids pony to be well mannered about handling. To make it worse, the first time I turned him out, he literally bolted away from me like I was about to attack him. Then he would not come near me in the field. He fled at the sight of me. The only time I was able to catch him was when I fed him, so I used this to my advantage. I would fed him, catch him, and work with those feet.I dont know much about his past, but hes very wary of people. Except for children though, my children can walk right up to him and hes thrilled to get their attention. Its just me he doesnt like. Since the children are the target market for this pony, I am very happy he does like them, but I do need him to like me somewhat, since Ill be leading the pony activities and all.I was seriously questioning my sanity in picking this pony. The first few days he was wild, but things have gotten better and now I can handle his feet without even haltering him. He has even started coming up to me in the field for a short pet. Progress!The Pony with his favorite peopleThe kids have had a short sit on him, but since I dont have tack that fits him, it was literally just a sit. He does seem to have impeccable manners once haltered, the issue is catching him, and the events leading up to catching him. And I actually want this pony to like me. Ive never had a horse not like me. WHY DONT YOU LIKE ME, SMALL PONY?!?I am slowly bribing him into liking me with food, so I think itll eventually be fine. Also Pony Man is an excellent example; he loves me and I can cuddle with him (the benefits of raising them from a youngster). I make sure to do it in front of the new pony to show him what hes missing. Get him a little bit jealous of the attention.Now, the moment youve all been waiting for what is the ponys name?!Well, his original name was terrible. I dont want to say it because I dont want to possibly offend anyone, but this name did not suit him at all. Think, sports related nickname. (I am not a fan of any sports. Bah humbug.)He needed a new name, and with his distinctive black and white coat, it seemed super obvious. However, we didnt want to be sued for trademark infringement from a giant company, so the name is.Cookie.The kids decided on this name, not me, but Im terrible at coming up with names, so its not like I was coming up with a better one. As long as its not the terrible name he came with.Also, on the plus side, his coat makes him stand out in the field. Hes very easy to spot. No more searching for slightly hidden dirty brown ponies!I know moving to a new place can be a big adjustment for a horse, so Im giving him the benefit of the doubt right now and letting him settle in. But soon hes going to need to start working. I got this pony to give pony rides to my kids, dang nabbit, and thats what hes going to do.
