A man has been banned from keeping equines for 10 years after World Horse Welfare discovered eight horses in his care with horrific burns on their faces, muzzles and bodies.The herd had been left to fly graze on public land contaminated by poisonous plants. This caused the horses lesions, which are believed to have been caused by a combination of direct UV sunlight and exposure to St Johns Wort.World Horse Welfare contacted the RSPCA to assist with removing the horses urgently due to their suffering.This was a truly horrific case. I do not think I have ever seen ponies with so much crocodile-like skin around their muzzles. They must have been in excruciating pain, said field officer Penny Baker.Keeping a horse or pony well is about much more than just food and water its also making sure they do not have access to poisonous plants, can be protected from the elements and of course get prompt veterinary treatment when they need it.We are very grateful to the member of the public who alerted us to these ponies, and we were pleased to have been able to work with the RSPCA to remove them from this appalling state of neglect.Raised, crusting lesionsThe horses were grazing a patch of council-owned conservation land in Farlington, Portsmouth, without permission. The area was heavily contaminated with dangerous weeds, with no evidence of additional hay or feed and no shelter.Three of the ponies had extensive facial lesions which were thick, raised, brown and crusting. They covered the muzzle, including the nostrils, lips and chin, and extended along both sides of the face, encircling both eyes.There were also raised, crusting, lesions over their bodies and the horses had a depressed and dull demeanour.Veterinary tests revealed all eight ponies were not in good health with evidence of inflammation and a chronic infection.In the report the vet went on to explain how the lesions occur:Certain weeds, like St Johns Wort, contain photodynamic agents that when the horse has contact with or ingests there is an exacerbated reaction to sunlight causing burns to the skin, said a vet.This would be termed a primary photosensitisation. Other weeds, such as ragwort, can cause damage to organs.The resulting damage prevents the filtering of photosensitive waste products, so they are retained in other areas of the body, such as the skin, which cause what is known as a secondary photosensitisation.Animals are completely reliant on their ownersHorses suffering from photosensitisation should be removed from direct sunlight and prevented from having further contact with the photodynamic agent.They must be protected from the sun with shade and shelter and any burn injuries must be treated.Burns on a horses muzzle are particularly painful as it is a naturally sensitive area.Were so grateful to World Horse Welfare for helping these horses, said Hampshires RSPCA chief inspector Paul Williams.Thankfully theyve now recovered. Photosensitisation occurs in horses when photodynamic agents are deposited in the skin, after which they are exposed to and absorb normal amounts of UV light.As with humans, horses have varying tolerances to UV rays, meaning that some can cope with sunshine better than others, so with warmer weather comes an increased risk of sunburn and photosensitisation.Of course, being outside in the sunshine has plenty of benefits and this is especially true of our horses, who are much better suited to being out in a field rather than standing in a stable. Sunshine lifts our spirits and allows us to soak up vital vitamin D, but, as the old adage goes, everything in moderation.Photosensitisation in horsesThree forms of photosensitisation are recognised and horses suffer from types 1 and 3:Photosensitisation type 1Type 1 occurs after the horse has eaten preformed photodynamic agents (found in St Johns wort, buckwheat, perennial ryegrass and clover, to name but a few).Photosensitisation type 3Type 3 photosensitisation in horses occurs in advanced liver disease when the photodynamic agent phylloerythrin, which is normally detoxified by the liver, enters the bloodstream and accumulates in the skin.The subsequent inflammatory reaction after the photodynamic gent has been exposed to UV light is characterised by reddened skin that may be painful and itchy.The affected skin may also become ulcerated and crusty. The degree of damage is out of all proportion to the level of UV exposure. \Similar to sunburn, lesions generally occur on the light-coloured skin of the horses muzzle and the back of the pasterns.Horses with type 3 also show clinical signs consistent with advanced liver disease/ failure, including abnormal mental activity and other neurological signs, reduced appetite, weight loss and/ or jaundice.Blood tests will help with the further investigation of liver disease, while a liver biopsy will sometimes be undertaken.Sunburn in horsesSimple sunburn occurs when the horses skin becomes red and scaly following excessive exposure to UV light.As in humans, the severity of the damage to horses depends on the strength of the radiation and the individuals skin sensitivity.Light-coloured skin is particularly prone due to a lack of melanin pigment, which absorbs UV light and scatters the radiation.Hairless skin will also be more severely affected. The muzzle is the area most commonly affected by sunburn in horses.Treating photosensitisation in horsesMild cases of sunburn and sensitivity generally resolve themselves provided further exposure to UV light is prevented and the skin is given a chance to heal.More severely affected horses will require the attention of a vet, as well as the application of topical medications (usually steroid-based creams).Treatment for type 1 photosensitisation is based on eliminating exposure to photodynamic agents in the first place, in addition to the treatment and preventative measures you can employ for sunburn.Treatment for type 3 involves further investigation and treatment of the underlying liver disease/ failure, but unfortunately the prognosis is poor.Preventing photosensitisationExcessive exposure to sunlight can be avoided by stabling during intense periods. Those ranches not only kick-started the breed, but today continue to influence the horses competing.All Quarter Horses must be able to run a quarter of a mile in 23 seconds or show that they are capable of Quarter Horse performance under ranch conditions, was recorded in the AQHA Executive Committee meeting minutes from April 22, 1940.The breed has evolved to include horses that show in hunter under saddle, western pleasure, dressage, and are driven under lines. Yet, the basis of the breed remains their foundation characteristics of cow savvy, athleticism, and trainability.A Cow Horse FirstThe list of stallions that have impacted the Quarter Horse breed is long, and among them is Doc Bar. Photo by Kate Bradley ByarsIn the halter arena, Doc Bar was a champion, but it would be his offspring that truly influenced the future horses bound to compete in the National Cutting Horse Association, National Reining Horse Association, National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA), and the versatility ranch horse arena.They were great horses, says NRCHA Hall of Famer Bobby Ingersoll of Doc Bar foals. They were great then and would be great today. They were athletic, quick-footed, had a lot of cow instinct and were quick to train. I showed the first Doc Bar foal at the NCHA Futurity, Im pretty proud of that. [Cow horses] had a lot of old foundation breeding, [but] when Doc Bar came [along] we had a little different type of horse, and they were pretty horses, too. Who doesnt want to ride a pretty one?Looking at the performance horse industry, you can still trace Doc Bar bloodlines to the winners in nearly every discipline. The 2023 NRCHA Worlds Greatest Horseman Champion Phillip Ralls rode Call Me Mitch to the title, and the roan stallion is by Metallic Cat and out of the Docs Hickory (by Doc Bar) daughter Miss Hickory Hill.The 2023 Worlds Greatest Horseman Champion, Call Me Mitch, excelled in four events to claim the title: reining, herd work, working cow horse and steer stopping. Photo by Kate Bradley ByarsDoc Bar brought the look, recalls Bill Enk, NRCHA Hall of Fame member, trainer and NRCHA director of judges. The eye appeal box [on a score card] was for Doc Bars. They looked at a cow, they got around on one and looked pretty doing it. The Doc Bar line is still on a lot of pedigrees. He has influenced an industry.Ranch to ArenaToday, ranch riding is one of the most entered events in the AQHA. With the addition of the AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championship Show and the inclusion of the stand-alone ranch riding class at the AQHA World Championship Show, horses bred, raised and used on the ranch have a place to compete. The ranch horses shine up to hit the show pen.Jessica Rumbaugh and her gelding, Boonfull Of Caesar, who has Doc Bar on both sides of his pedigree, won the 2018 AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse Amateur World Champion title. The gray gelding may look sharp showing, but hes also been known to push Rumbaughs grass-fed beef cattle around on their former El Campo, Texas, ranch.I bought him as a cutting horse, but his athleticism made adding the other classes for versatilityranch riding, ranch reining, working cow horse and ranch conformationeasy to do, says Rumbaugh. Photo by Kate Bradley ByarsAboard Lil Trash Talk, another Doc Bar descendent, Texas trainer Bud Lyon captured the 2020 AQHA Junior Ranch Riding World Champion title and the 2021 AQHA Senior Ranch Riding World Champion title. The sorrel horse was bred by Brooke Wharton, who grew up on the Waggoner Ranch.
