Remus Horse Sanctuary in Essex has called on the public to donate any of their unwanted Christmas gifts to them this January.The charity will use these donations in sales, raffles and events to generate much needed income and raise funds to help feed and care for its residents.The sanctuary, which celebrated its 40thanniversary in 2023 and relies entirely on public funds to operate,provides rehabilitation and lifetime care for more than 100 horses, ponies, donkeys, sheep, goats and cats.By donating your unwanted Christmas gifts, youre not just clearing out your cupboards youre giving hope and a second chance to animals who have endured unimaginable suffering, said Sue Burton, founder of Remus Horse Sanctuary.Every contribution, no matter how small, has the power to change lives.Repurpose surplus presentsIt is estimated that millions of pounds worth of unwanted gifts is undesired and/or are discarded in the UK each year.A study by Oxfam in 2023 revealed that 40% of people receive between one and five presents each year that they dont want or dont have a use for.A third of people put unwanted gifts away out of sight, with 14% only fishing them out if the giver comes round.
