BETA warns against buying unfitted safety kit as Christmas presents
The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) has advised against buying riding hats and body protectors which havent been fitted to the individual as Christmas presents. While appreciating that safety equipment such as hats and body protectors can make great gifts, BETA warns that if they havent been fitted properly then they can be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.Helping to keep a loved one safe while they ride is the best gift, but we want to ensure that for everyone gifting a hat or body protector this year, its fitted properly to ensure comfort and performance day in, day out, said Claire Williams, BETAs executive director. This might mean a little creativity when it comes to whats wrapped under the tree, and then a great excuse to hit your local tack shop after the big day and find the perfect product.Dont buy second handBETA also advises against buying second hand safety equipment as a Christmas present. All safety kit has a life span and needs to be replaced at least every five years depending on wear and care, and whenever a hat sustains an impact, it needs to be replaced too as it can no longer do its job, continued Claire. When you buy second hand, you dont know how it has been cared for, how often its been used, or if its been fallen on. This can give people a false sense of security, and no one wants to receive that under the tree this Christmas.Vouchers for safety equipment are a better idea and can be purchased from many BETA members.
