Scottish SPCA calls for UK-wide ban on the private sale and use of fireworks
The Scottish SPCA has called for the private sale and use of fireworks to be banned UK-wide due to the impact fireworks can have on horses, pets, farm animals and wildlife. The charity is urging supporters of the ban to contact their MP regarding a UK-wide ban on private sale and use, and their MSP to seek action on stronger protections in Scotland. The loud noises and bright lights from fireworks can cause considerable fear and stress to horses and other animals, responses which sometimes result in injury and even death. While some horses injure themselves trying to flee the sudden bangs and dazzling flashes, others become distressed and hide or refuse to eat and drink. Fireworks can mean hours of worryFor horse owners, fireworks can mean hours of worry, trying to keep a frightened animal safe, said Nicola Strachan, head of advocacy and strategic partnerships at the Scottish SPCA.Horses may panic and attempt to escape, putting themselves and those caring for them at risk of serious injury. Their distress does not necessarily end when the noise stops.Owners can take precautions, but unpredictability of fireworks and the fact it is no longer confined to one evening in the year, makes preparation extremely difficult.Two-thirds extremely anxious about Bonfire NightA recent Scottish SPCA survey asked its members if they are worried about Bonfire Night and the effect it may have on their animal. Sixty-seven percent of the 1,625 people surveyed said that they were extremely anxious about the upcoming date.Over 98 percent of respondents said that they would support a full ban on the private sale and use of fireworks in Scotland, and agree that the use of fireworks should be limited to professionally organised displays.Any preventable suffering is unacceptable. Any injury or in the worst cases the loss of a horses life cannot be dismissed as an unfortunate consequence of celebration, continued Nicola. That is why we are calling for a ban on the private sale and use of fireworks, alongside greater consideration for horses and other animals when organised displays are planned.Image Scottish SPCA.Related contentGo Low: Public urged to choose quieter fireworks as Bonfire Night approachesHorses and fireworks: advice to help equines cope on Bonfire NightFirst Aid Week: What to do if your horse is bleeding and the signs it is an emergencyShouldanimals and vulnerable people sufferforthe enjoyment of others?
