International working animal charity Brooke is asking animal lovers to walk 62 miles this October to raise funds to help combat the global donkey skin trade.The demand for donkey skin has grown alarmingly in recent years due to the popularity of ejiao. Ejiao is a gelatin product used in traditional Chinese medicine and commonly found in cosmetics, which is obtained from boiling donkey skin. In 2025, Brooke found that if the trade continues at its current rate, Africa could lose half its donkey population by 2040. Challenge detailsAll funds raised by the Walk 62 Miles Challenge will go towardsthefight to expose the cruelty of the trade and protect donkeys from suffering and slaughter.The challenge takes place between Thursday 1 and Saturday 31 October 2026, is free to take part in and can be completed anywhere and at any pace. Those participants who raise 10 will receive a Brooke t-shirt, while those raising 150 will receive a finishers medal.More than six million donkeys are killed for their skins each year, devastating animals and the communities that depend on them, said Zoe Francis, Fundraising Officer at Brooke.Funds raised will help protect donkeys from theft, support action against traffickers and provide emergency care for rescued animals.
