British showjumper Harry Charles produced one of the most remarkable comebacks in recent World Championship history, turning a week that appeared to be slipping away from him into an individual bronze medal at Aachen, Germany. Riding the extraordinary LT Holst Freda (pictured top), Harry was one of only three combinations to jump double clear in Sundays two-round individual final, alongside newly crowned world champion Steve Guerdat from Switzerland and silver medallist Thibeau Spits from Belgium.And the achievement was all the more extraordinary given that Harry had only been partnered with Freda for around 10 weeks.What a roller coaster of a week, he said. I thought I blew it on the first day when we had a fence down.His opening speed round on Wednesday had indeed left him down in 44th, while a further costly round on Thursday saw him fall to 59th after incurring another four faults. Yet Freda kept improving, and Harry kept fighting.Honestly I wondered if it was the right thing to even jump today, admitted Harry, who began Sunday in 23rd on 7.17 penalties. But then I thought you never know what could happen.It turned out to be the right decision.The first round of the individual final immediately transformed the picture. Harry produced a superb clear, moving into medal contention, and then returned to produce another faultless performance when the pressure was enormous. He ultimately finished on his carried-forward 7.17 penalties, taking bronze. Only Guerdat and Spits could match his double-clear achievement.She ate the first course today said Harry. And it was still a massive long shot going into a second round, but I thought I would just let her do her thing.And Freda certainly did.It was enormous, and to be honest, ate it again. I cant believe the feeling I got, and I cant believe the horse I have. Its something Ive dreamed about since I was a kid. I felt I hadnt performed properly in a championship yet and maybe that was something I lacked as a rider, but I really fought through it this week.Yet, as is so often the case with a great championship performance, Harry was quick to deflect the credit towards his horse.I have an incredible horse. That really is all it comes down to, he said. She got this bronze, and I was just lucky to be sat on her.The story of Freda has been almost as extraordinary as the result. Originally sourced for Charles wife Eve, the New Zealand-bred mare caught his eye immediately.I dont think you even need to try this horse, Harry recalled telling Eve after seeing Freda for the first time. I was so in love with her.When Eve asked whether he thought the mare could make the World Championships, Harry initially said no. His father, London Olympic gold medallist Peter, however, said absolutely.Ten weeks later, they have a World Championship bronze medal.She is a freak, Harry said. The amount of power she can generate and her nature.And Aachen, a venue which Harry admitted had not always been kind to him, has now become a happier hunting ground.This place is so special, he said. As a kid growing up, this was the place everyone talked about. You saw all your idols, the people winning here, and to have a championship here it does not get any better.Behind Harry, Ben Maher had arrived at the final in the strongest position of the British trio. The Olympic champion was third overnight on just 1.01 penalties with Point Break, having been faultless over the championships opening three rounds.But the individual final proved brutally unforgiving. Bens first-round mistake, where he picked up a refusal at the wavy planks, ended his medal hopes, taking him out of contention before the decisive second round. Bens disappointment was particularly acute after such a strong week.It was just small mistake, but thats not good enough at this level, he said.He explained that Point Break had made a huge effort through the triple combination, before Ben had to react quickly after the water.That was good riding, he reflected. But then we probably paid for it afterwards.The stallion subsequently became unsettled, and Ben felt he took his eye away from the plank for the briefest moment.He took his eye off the jump for a very, very split second, and didnt pick up, said Ben. Im so disappointed, but overall he jumped well.There was heartbreak, too, for Scott Brash. The overnight leader after Thursdays second qualifier, Scott had dropped to 10th after the first fence fell in Fridays team final. He nevertheless recovered brilliantly to help Britain win team bronze.In the individual final, however, his medal hopes ended in dramatic fashion. After a fence down in the first round, Hello Mango caught the first element of the triple combination in the second round. She paddled through the second element and Scott was unseated as she jumped the third. Both horse and rider were reported to be none the worse for wear though. Steve Guerdat and Dynamix de BelhemeAt the sharp end, Steve Guerdats consistency with the super mare Dynamix de Belheme, finally delivered him first place. He carried 0.86 penalties from the opening days and then added two clears in the individual final to become world champion.
