A quick-thinking Oxfordshire horse owner has stressed the value of putting GPS trackers on equestrian equipment after a police chase that brought her stolen trailer home in a matter of hours.When Gemma Devonport visited the yard where she keeps her 16.1hh Irish coloured, Jethro, on Thursday 30 October she realised her 2,000 green Ifor Williams 505 trailer had gone missing.This was the second trailer theft from the yard in Eynsham in a week. Just days before her cousins Bateson trailer had been taken and so Gemma had a hitch lock and a two wheel locks on the box. However, she said the thieves had been able to slice through them like butter.I just had a feeling that it was going to go as there had been a spate of thefts over that week, not just my cousins box but also quad bikes and other machinery, said Gemma, so when I went down to feed Jethro and could see it was gone I got onto my husband Carl straight away.Tracking deviceCarl had placed an Apple AirTag that could be tracked from his phone inside the box, so he was able to see that the trailer was heading down the M1.The Devonports called Thames Valley Police, who gave them a crime number and said they would investigate. But then the pair saw that the trailer was now in Leicestershire, so also rang that force.Leicestershire were really proactive, said Gemma. The police officer gave me his phone number and asked me to keep tabs on where the box was. I was able to tell him that they had pulled into a service station. They were probably rubbing their hands together thinking weve got this trailer, lets go and have breakfast.I was able to describe exactly where on the car park the trailer was and the police apprehended the thieves just a couple of hours after it was stolen. I got my box back the day after.This was all because it had an AirTag on board there was no way wed have got it back otherwise. These AirTags are marvellous.We had a sticker on the front of the box stating that the box is tagged and that if it is stolen we can trace it and they obviously did not take any notice of that at all.I want people to know how an easy and relatively cheap thing like this can be the difference between you getting your property back and not. As I write it is pouring with rain, but the work in the Park has been enabled by the good weather that we enjoyed up to last weekend. The cross-country course, show jumping arena and practice areas have now had their Autumn programme of works completed, i.e. vertidrained, compost & sand applied and dressed with slow release fertiliser. Therefore, on this occasion the arrival of the rain is perfect!Last weekend was the annual inaugural course walk with Eric Winter (Course Designer), Mathias Otto-Erley (Technical Delegate), Kai-Steffen Meier (Assistant Course Designer), both of whom we welcome on board for Badminton 2026. Mike Etherington-Smith joined the walk as Course Advisor. It has to be said the ground was perfect, as was the weather unlike 2024 when the walk took place on the weekend of the storms and gales. It is always the moment when the following years event becomes real as Eric shares his enthusiastic thoughts about the course. Of course, there will still be some interesting tweaks to the route of the course as we get nearer to the day! This was followed yesterday by the visit of the TV production team led by Chris Lewis and Michael Cole. The morning being spent on the course, working out in principle the best TV camera positions, which will be confirmed when the team return in March.Last month we also had the first of the traffic management meetings with Tracsis, the police, AA and the home team. This meeting is an opportunity for all to discuss any issues from the previous event, which are then fed into the planning for 2026 to ensure the same does not happen again. Luckily there were few issues from 2025 but one must never be complacent.An essential overhead main electric cable that feeds not only the Event but also half the village has been put underground in a 3m deep trench, this will ensure there is no longer the risk of the cable being hit by high lorries as they enter the Park.Andrew (Tucker) has now put a number of the major contractors in place, which is a good position to be in by mid November. Alex (Harbottle) and Rosie (Latter) have been busy and the tradestand invitations have now gone out.
