Everyone adored this little chap: Tributes paid to Redwings star
Redwings Horse Sanctuary has paid tribute to one of its most beloved residents, Baby Face Nelson, who has sadly passed away following a serious bout of colic, aged 15. The Adoption Star and member of The Gangsters was a miniature Shetland who lived at Redwings Caldecott. The Gangsters included Baby Face and five other ponies who first came to Redwings in 2011 after their owner passed away. With no one able to care for them, they were brought to the sanctuary to ensure they had a safe and happy future.Baby Face enjoyed over a decade of loving care at the sanctuary alongside his companions and will be sorely missed.Everyone here adored this little chap, a charity spokesperson said. He had such a big personality for such a small pony and were truly devastated by his loss and we know our supporters will be too. Thank you so much to everyone who adopted and loved Baby Face you helped us give him a wonderful life at Redwings.Baby Face had always been the smallest member of the group and had experienced bouts of colic over the years. When he began showing signs of colic last month, he was brought to the Horse Hospital at Redwings HQ for intensive care, alongside his best friend Reggie.Despite receiving round-the-clock treatment including IV fluids, pain relief and tubing Baby Face didnt recover as quickly as staff hoped. He underwent surgery two days later, which initially went well, but the vet team reported that the colic was very severe and so they were not sure how he would recover.By the following morning, Baby Faces condition had deteriorated and when he didnt respond to further treatment, the vet team made the difficult decision to put him to sleep to prevent any more suffering.Baby Faces passing left Reggie on his own at Caldecott, so Reggie has since permanently moved him back to Aylsham to be reunited with the rest of the Gangsters group, where he has settled well. Those who would like to make a donation to Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Baby Faces memory can do so here.More from Your HorseBest things about hacking in autumn according to #Hack1000Miles challengers7 Ways to Bond With Your Horse (Without Riding!)Three groundwork exercises to build trust and confidenceThe post Everyone adored this little chap: Tributes paid to Redwings star appeared first on Your Horse.

Understand Horse Breathing Post-Exercise: Tips For Improving Recovery
Key Points Horses' Breathing Importance: A fit horse's breathing rate should fall below 60-80 breaths per minute post-exercise. Rest vs. Exercise Breathing: Resting: 1220 breaths/min, 5 liters/breath. Exercising: Up to 150 breaths/min, 1215 liters/breath. Role of Chemoreceptors: Adjust breathing by monitoring oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH levels in blood. Recovery and Fitness: Well-conditioned horses recover breathing rates swiftly after exertion. Signs of Breathing Stress: Prolonged elevated breathing may signal stress or health issues needing assessment. Factors Influencing Recovery: Exercise intensity, ambient temperature, fitness levels, and overall health. Enhancing Recovery: Use supplements, balanced diet, proper gear, and monitor post-exercise care. Conclusion: Observing respiratory function is vital for health and performance; Just Horse Riders provides support. A Breath of Fresh Air: Understanding Horse Breathing Post-Exercise Horses are majestic creatures, revered as symbols of power and grace. At Just Horse Riders, understanding how a horse recovers its breath after exercise is crucial for anyone devoted to equestrian sports or interested in enhancing their horse's performance and health. Why Breathing Matters A horse's respiratory efficiency is integral to its performance. After a 350m canter, ideally, a fit horse's breathing rate will decrease steadily, falling below 6080 breaths per minute within minutes. This steady recovery indicates effective oxygen delivery and carbon dioxide removal from the body, showing the horse's cardiovascular health and aerobic fitness level. The Science of Horse Breathing Resting and Exercising: A World Apart At rest, a horse's breathing rate is typically around 1220 breaths per minute, inhaling approximately 5 liters of air with each breath. During physical exertions like a canter, the rate and depth of breathing increase dramatically. A horse can inhale 1215 liters with each breath, with a rapid increase in breath per minute up to around 150 during intense galloping [Hodgson DR, 2022]. Automatic Adjustments: Chemoreceptors at Work Horses possess a carefully tuned respiratory control system. Chemoreceptors within their bodies gauge blood changes, monitoring oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH levels to adjust breathing accordingly. During exercise, increased carbon dioxide and acidity levels trigger deeper, expedited breaths to restore balance [Baudinette RV, 2017]. The Role of Fitness in Recovery The Science of Recovery A well-conditioned equine athlete will recuperate from a 350m canter with respiratory rates returning to resting levels swiftly. Typically, initial rapid breathing begins to slow down significantly within the first 1-2 minutes and stabilizes further by the 5-10 minute mark, allowing the horse to repay its oxygen debt effectively. Signs of Stress: When Recovery Falters Prolonged elevated breathing rates or shallow panting beyond 10 minutes may indicate stress or respiratory complications, signaling a need for informed assessment and possible veterinary intervention [Whitfield H, 2000]. Factors Influencing Recovery Individual Variations Several factors impact breathing recovery. Exercise intensity, ambient temperature, fitness levels, and overall health all play roles in determining how quickly a horse regains a normal breathing pattern. Astray from fit horses, unfit or roadless-health-horses might endure longer abnormal breathing rates [Haygain]. The Power of Conditioning Training consistently improves cardiovascular-respiratory fitness, equipping horses to bounce back faster. Much like human athletes, horses develop endurance, fostering relaxed, controlled breathing patterns post-exercise. Enhancing Your Horse's Recovery Your Role as an Equestrian As horse enthusiasts, there's much we can do to aid recovery. Incorporating the right Supplements and ensuring a balanced diet will help maintain optimal health. Moreover, choosing the right gear from our Jodhpur Collection ensures maximum comfort during rides, crucial for efficient post-exercise recovery. Practical Advice for Post-Exercise Care Attend to your horse immediately post-exercise. Give them plenty of time to relax with Stable Rugs to keep cool, and assess their breathing pattern. Offering Horse Treats and Gifts with nutritious value can also support overall health and energy management. Conclusion Monitoring your horse's respiratory function post-exercise is vital. Observing and understanding these patterns can ward off potential health issues and elevate performance levels. At Just Horse Riders, we provide the resources and knowledge to support every equestrian in ensuring their horse is breathing easy and thriving. Understanding Sickle Hocks in Horses: Risks, Management Strategies, and Success Stories
Topic Details Understanding Sickle Hocks Sickle hocks are a conformational fault in horses where the cannon bone juts forward causing stress on the surrounding structures. Hock Structure The hock, like a human ankle, acts as a hinge. In sickle-hocked horses, the angle causes stress on various ligaments and tendons. Risks & Conditions Includes soft tissue injuries, curb, bog spavin, chronic arthritis, and shortened strides, impacting performance. Causes & Heritability Primarily heritable, with stress from high-impact activities worsening the condition. Management Strategies Regular veterinary check-ups, corrective trimming/shoeing, workload adjustments, and advanced treatments as needed. Preventive Measures Use of proper equipment like jodhpurs and boots enhances health and comfort for both horse and rider. Success Stories Horses can succeed with proper care, using supplements and interventions that aid long-term soundness and competitiveness. Key Takeaways Early recognition, competent care, and understanding horse capabilities are crucial for sustaining health and performance. Understanding Sickle Hocks in Horses: Management, Risks, and Success StoriesThe equestrian world is an intricate tapestry of knowledge, skill, and of course, passion for horses. To bolster this passion, understanding critical aspects of horse health, such as sickle hocks, is vital. In this article, we'll delve into what sickle hocks are, explore their inherent risks, and share strategies and success stories of effective management. Saddle up for a journey into the world of equine conformation! What Are Sickle Hocks?Sickle hocks refer to a specific conformational fault in horses. Picture the sickle's curve that's the angle seen below the hock joint, causing the cannon bone to jut forward. This defect causes undue strain on the surrounding tissues and joints, resembling an intricate puzzle of equine anatomy. [Learn more about sickle hocks here](https://www.horseadvice.com/articles/equine-diseases/conformation/sickle-hock).Understanding the Hock StructureThe hock, classified as the tarsus, is akin to the human ankle. It acts as a critical hinge in a horse's hind limb, built for shock absorption and propulsion. In sickle-hocked horses, the acute angle between the tibia and the cannon bone causes the foot to place unwarranted stress on: The long plantar ligament, which stretches down the back of the leg, Flexor tendons, Tarsal bones and ligaments, Various structures at the back of the hock.Risks and Associated ConditionsThe lovely canter across a field could be interrupted by a myriad of health issues if your horse has sickle hocks. This conformation can lead to: Soft tissue injuries such as sprains[2], Curb: inflammation within the hock structure[4], Bog spavin: chronic inflammation leading to swelling[5], And much more!Problems may also include chronic arthritis, shortened strides, and particular reluctance to utilize the hindquarters effectively. For disciplines needing high collections like dressage, the stakes are even higher!Causes and HeritabilityA primary suspect in causing sickle hocks? Heredity! This heritable conformational flaw can persist throughout generations[5]. Breeding strategies are key herepromotion of healthy conformation will mitigate the issue for future horse generations.Environmental ExacerbationRepeated stress from activities such as jumping, uneven terrains, and other high-impact tasks contribute heavily to the predicament, as seen in some real case studies[6].Management StrategiesSo, how does one effectively manage sickle hocks? Start by ensuring regular veterinary check-ups as early identification of problems can thwart more serious conditions down the line. Engage in corrective trimming and shoeing to alleviate stress. Adjust workload to prevent exacerbation of symptoms. In worst-case scenarios, employ advanced veterinary treatments such as joint injections and shockwave therapy if needed[3].Preventive MeasuresHorses thrive in environments that prioritize health. Using the correct equipment like Jodhpurs, Boots, and Gloves, boosts both rider and animal comfort.Success StoriesWhile the road may seem rocky, countless horses lead successful careers with sickle hocks when supported by proper preventative measures and veterinary care.
