Two horses in Indiana recently tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The horses live in Adams and Jay counties.In Adams County, a 2-year-old Standardbred filly tested positive on Sept. 9. The unvaccinated horse developed clinical signs on Aug. 30, including knuckling on rear hooves, full body muscle fasciculations, and a fever. She is still alive.In Jay County, a 3-year-old, unvaccinated Belgian gelding tested positive on Sept. 4 after developing clinical signs on Aug. 26, including an inability to stand. His current status is unknown.EDCC Health Watch is an Equine Network marketing program that utilizes information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to create and disseminate verified equine disease reports. TheEDCCis an independent nonprofit organization that is supported by industry donations in order to provide open access to infectious disease information.WNV 101West Nile virusis transmitted to horses via bites from infected mosquitoes. The new guidelines will be presented at the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Congress, Sept. 10-13 in Birmingham, U.K.,during the Making Your Veterinary Career Work session on Sept. 13.Retention is one of the biggest challenges in equine practice. Originating in the 16th century, the yearly event took place to ensure the landed gentry were not building on land belonging to the common people.Today, participants will follow a 26-mile route which starts in the Edinburgh countryside and finishes on the Royal Mile.
