    Alberta Horse Positive for EIA
On May 28, one horse in Clearwater County, Alberta, was confirmed positive for equine infectious anemia (EIA). The horse was tested after developing clinical signs of disease. Initial reports indicate that there are several other horses on the property. The infected horse and all exposed horses are under quarantine.EDCC Health Watch is an Equine Network marketing program that utilizes information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to create and disseminate verified equine disease reports. TheEDCCis an independent nonprofit organization that is supported by industry donations in order to provide open access to infectious disease information.About EIAEquine infectious anemiais a viral disease that attacks horses immune systems. The virus is transmitted through the exchange of body fluids from an infected to an uninfected animal, often by blood-feeding insects such as horseflies. It can also be transmitted through the use of blood-contaminated instruments or needles.ACoggins test screens horses blood for antibodiesthat are indicative of the presence of the EIA virus. Most U.S. states require horses to have proof of a negative Coggins test to travel across state lines.Once an animal is infected with EIA, it is infected for life and can be a reservoir for the spread of disease. Not all horses show signs of disease, but those that do can exhibit:Progressive body condition loss;Muscle weakness;Poor stamina;Fever;Depression; andAnemia.EIA has no vaccine and no cure. A horse diagnosed with the disease dies, is euthanized, or must be placed under extremely strict quarantine conditions (at least 200 yards away from unaffected equids) for the rest of his life.

Oliver Townend is the cross-country master at MARS Badminton
There was a dramatic finish to cross-country day at the MARS Badminton Horse Trials when the top two riders, Oliver Townend, with Paul and Diana Ridgeons grey mare Cooley Rosalent, and Ros Canter, were both awarded 15 penalties for going the wrong side of a fence flag. There was a palpable sense of relief when the penalties were rescinded afterwards when the ground jury examined video footage. Before that, Gemma Stevens and her first ride, Chilli Knight, had enjoyed most of the day at the top of the cross-country leaderboard; they are now in third place, a rail behind Ros.Cooley Rosalent is still relatively babyish at 11 and she is a sensitive mare the opposite of Ballaghmor Class and shy with people, said Oliver, but the more the questions came, the more she enjoyed it, and when we were through the Lake, I thought Now were away.It was a cleverly flowing course where you couldnt afford to be behind the clock and the mistakes that happened werent alarming, which is what we want.Ros described riding Michele and Archie Sauls Lordships Graffalo (Walter) as a privilege. She said: He absolutely loves it. When he sees a fence he gets into a great balance and he never seems to tire. I wouldnt class myself as a fast rider, but I seem to be speedy on Walter.Gemma, who may have an advantage tomorrow because she spends a lot of time doing pure show jumping, described Chris and Lisa Stones Chilli Knight as such a genuine little horse if he sees a fence with flags, he will take me towards it. He has come out of today smiling his head off.The outstanding Irish combination of Austin OConnor and Colorado Blue produced their fifth five-star round inside the optimum time to lie fourth.Harry Meade, who also had flag penalties rescinded, repeated his feat of a fortnight ago at Kentucky by steering both his rides, Superstition and Cavalier Crystal, around inside the time. He is now fifth and seventh, his horses split by German Olympian Christoph Wahler on DAccord FRH, sixth.Six of the top seven riders finished penalty-free inside the optimum time of 11 minutes 40 seconds on day when course-designer Eric Winters big but fair track showed the sport at its best with 44 clear rounds, including several from first-timers, and 60 completions from the 79 cross-country starters.Completing the top 10 are Oliver Townend with his grand veteran Ballaghmor Class, New Zealander Tim Price with Vitali and Irish first-timer Ian Cassells (Master Point).Tom McEwen didnt enjoy the best of birthdays, dropping from second to 15th when JL Dublin triggered a frangible pin at fence 26, Huntsmans Close, and Gemma Stevens was philosophical about pulling up her dressage runner-up Jalapeno after a run-out.Tomorrows show jumping finale promises to be a tense affair as Oliver does not have a rail in hand over Ros. Both riders have a Badminton win to their name Oliver in 2009 and Ros in 2023 and it is sure to be a tussle to the very last rail.Tomorrows final horse inspection takes place at 8.30am and show jumping for the lower-placed horses will start at 11.30am.

    Gemma Stevens: What a round
Kirsty Chabert proved the perfect cross-country trailblazer at the MARS Badminton Horse Trials, putting in a superb round on the mare Classic Vl to come home clear and show her fellow competitors how well Eric Winters course was riding.Next up was Oliver Townend on the wonderful Ballaghmor Class, the pair showing all their experience to come home with a handful of time penalties (4.6). It was their 13th consecutive five-star clear cross-country round, the first pair to achieve such a record for nearly 20 years.Gemma Stevens riding Chilli Knight [pictured] was the first to crack the optimum time of 11 minutes 40 seconds with a superb round as she rose from 10th place to soar into the lead in the early stages of the competition. What a round Im not going to lie, that was cool, she said delightedly. It was no surprise when Harry Meade, the only rider to achieve the optimum time at Kentucky a fortnight ago, romped home with no penalties on Superstition, a horse that he finds is best reserved for the big occasion he hasnt run across country since Burghley last September.Bubby Upton had another excellent round on her long-time partner Cola, and there were clears for first-time overseas riders Senne Vervaecke (Belgium), Jerome Robine (Germany), and Ryuzo Kitajima (Japan). There were run-outs with their first horses for Tim Price and Joseph Murphy, plus Tiana Coudray, Arthur Marx, Joe Meyer, a horse fall for David Doel and Galileo Nieuwmoed at fence 26 and Kylie Roddys bad Badminton luck continued when she tipped off SRS Kan Do at fence 4. Tom Rowlands pulled up his first horse, Quintilius, after a run-out at the seventh fence, Chinese competitor Alex Hua Tian, who heroically survived a near unseating at fence 17, retired, and Portuguese first-timer Manuel Grave was eliminated for three refusals.

Case Study: Keeping the Older Show Horse Competitive
How a 21-year-old Hanoverian gelding continues to stay competitive at the Florida winter circuitMindful retired at The Devon Horse Show in May 2025 after a successful career. | Kind MediaMany horse owners, riders, and trainers expect their horses athletic potential to diminish as they enter their later years; however, some horses remain healthy and happy in their work well past what many would consider their peak years. As horses age, they might experience more joint pain associated with osteoarthritis, digestive problems or a decline in gut health, or decreased performance. Fortunately, with advancements in equine medicine, veterinarians can work with horses trainers and care teams to help ensure long-term soundness. The Crucial Equine Vet-Client-Patient RelationshipSuccessfully maintaining a horse in the top levels of competition throughout his later years requires a close relationship between the rider or trainer and veterinarian. The rider is the person who spends the time on the horses back and feels differences in a gait transition or that a canter lead feels (different) one way versus the other, says Kate Britton, DVM, of Atlantic Equine Services in Dover, New Hampshire, and Wellington, Florida. These small details are crucial to the overall picture, especially when combined with information from the horses competition performance and a clinical exam. Meanwhile, dont forget to keep the owner in the loop. Keeping an open relationship with the owner is paramount to the health and success of the horse as they are the ones standing behind the horse with all parties involved on both good and bad days, she adds.Maintaining Mindful at the Top Levels of SportJennifer Hannan, rider and trainer, of Ocean Echo Farm in Wakefield, Rhode Island, and Wellington, has been training Mindful, a 21-year-old Hanoverian gelding owned by Selma Garber and Kensel LLC, since 2017. (Mindful started his US Equestrian-recognized showing career in 2013 with a different owner and riders.)In their years together they have shown at the top venues around the country, such as Palm Beach International (now Wellington International), which Hannan says was the scene for their first international derby win as a pair. He has since gone on to win seven international derbies at (Palm Beach/Wellington International). He has earned championships at every major horse show on the East Coast.Over the years Hannan and her veterinarian, Britton, have worked closely with one another to maintain Mindfuls physical and mental well-being at the highest levels of the sport.Managing Mindfuls Joint HealthBritton regularly evaluates Mindfultypically monthly, she says, but twice monthly for performance evaluations during periods of intense competition. Regarding maintenance care, we try to stay ahead of any issues, so (I see him) around four times per year for this.To manage any potential joint pain that could affect his performance, Britton treats him with intra-articular (IA) autologous protein solution and 2.5% polyacrylamide hydrogel (not at the same time) based on the results of her regular physical exams and soundness evaluations. We try to stay ahead of any issues that may arise with his continued career, and we wanted to use the most beneficial treatments for his joints, she says.Equine Complementary Therapies and NutritionIn addition to regular soundness examinations, Mindful also receives consistent veterinary chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, and massage, which Britton says complement his medical treatments and play an important role in his longevity. He goes on a Theraplate daily and turns out as much as possible, adds Hannan. His diet plays a role in his health as far as keeping him fit, she continues. We feed an all-natural diet, which is low in sugar, and I really feel like that has helped him in his career with me. This consists of a forage-based diet (including alfalfa pellets and beet pulp) with non-GMO supplements to fill any nutritional gaps.Utilizing Equine Fitness for Long-Term SoundnessHannan works to keep Mindful physically fit year-round to help him maintain a healthy muscular condition and always stay comfortable in his work. His overall fitness is our main goal, she says. We try to keep him fit and happy.Mindful stays in a consistent program with a balance of jumping and discipline-specific training days, along with relaxed trail riding and hacking days. I think its important to keep him fit on many different types of surfaces, says Hannan. He works in the fields with hills as well as in the ring and even some harder surfaces. However, Mindful only jumps once a week. That may include cavalletti exercises or just a few jumps, so he keeps his fitness, Hannan adds, noting she rarely schools Mindful over show-height fences, but she might do so once before a show. She adds that Mindfuls owner allows her to create a detailed training and competition plan for him, without ever pushing him past his physical or mental limits and while keeping his competition schedule light. We have really been able to tailor his show schedule, physical fitness, and overall soundness (to his individual needs), says Hannan. I truly believe all of this has made a huge impact on his unbelievable career.Take-Home MessageCaring for horses that continue competing into their senior years demands a close relationship between the riders or trainers and veterinarians as well as careful daily monitoring of any minor changes in the horses behavior.Always listen to your horse and trust your feeling of them and what they are telling you, says Britton. Jenny has an exceptional ability to know minor changes in how her horses are feeling, which I feel helps keep them ahead of major issues. Trainers and veterinarians must maintain open communication regarding a horses health and performance to keep him sound and happy long-term.This article is from the Older Horse 2025 issue ofThe Horse: Your Guide to Equine Health Care. Rider reactions Saturday
Classic was absolutely fab. I think Eric [Winter, course-designer] has built the most rider-thinking course and the ground rode superbly. Badminton is the one five-star we havent cracked, so I just want to be back tomorrow show jumping. And now Im going for a sleep!Kirsty Chabert, pathfinderIt was a good round, despite the 20 penalties [at fence 19]. Viscount Viktor was fighting a bit at the start and that was our comeuppance the brush came up too fast. But he relaxed after that. He is a class horse.Tim PriceThere were a couple of places where Ballaghmor Class wasnt too impressed with the size of the fence if he sees a fence he doesnt think is big enough, he can get out of my hands, but the old-fashioned fences he respects and his galloping is fantastic. Looking back, I think I enjoyed every minute! And, fair dos to Badminton, as the organisers must have been under pressure with the lack of rain but the ground is very consistent and they couldnt have done more. And its great to be back here in the sunshine!Oliver TownendI had a really nice ride on Belline Fighting Spirit. It was frustrating to have a 20 penalties [at fence 12] he jumped too far off the steps and showed his greenness, but it was 50% my fault. He will gain a lot from this.Joseph MurphyWhat a round! Im not going to lie that was cool! Last year I had no control, but I have changed the bit and felt much more confident this year. Chilli Knight doesnt like to whoa but he knows now when I ask him to whoa that it is for a jump. At Huntsmans Close he was unreal. I knew I didnt have enough seconds in hand to go long.Gemma StevensI am absolutely thrilled. It is Superstitions first run since coming through the finish lines at Burghley. I just jumped two 90cm show jumps this morning which kept him relaxed and he felt great. I loved jumping into the Lake. That is a proper Badminton fence, really cool.Harry MeadeCola was sensational. What a horse he is a fighter through and through. I know him inside out after riding him for nine years.Bubby UptonWhen you breed a horse [Hooney dArville], you never believe you will win a five-star [Luhmuhlen last year] or get to Badminton, but today she has shown me that she is a world-class.Lara de Liederkerke-MeierThere were some really, really good bits she [Cancaras Girl] is amazing, a little firecracker. Im really pleased with parts of it. She was getting tired approaching the quarry and didnt make the distance from the wall to the skinny. Im so mad at myself because I held her together and shes honest as the day is long, but couldnt jump it fromwhere she was. I cant blame her in the slightest.Tiana CoudrayHe [Black Ice] is just a perfect cross-country horse, it was amazing. Its quite long round here and you have time to think about everything. Everything was on Plan A; he hesitated at the top of the stairs he does that at drops, and the lake was good for me as he always lands quite early so good for the short four strides.Jrme RobinThat was so close. Im gutted for him [Dassett Rock Star] and the owners. But was his first time here, and he was quite struck by the venue, as many are. Ive just got to learn to manage him. We had a super-educational round, still lots to learn, but thats what this level is all about. It was nothing but a great experience and a clear round will come, Im excited for his future.Tom CrispIm now hot, hot, hot! Feroza Nieuwmoed was great, an amazing horse.Ryuzo (Sabu) KitajimaIt has been a dream Badminton debut. Rehy DJ Piglet was incredible. He grew in confidence. It was a really strong track and I couldnt be more proud of him. I went around the tree at Huntsmans Close as he was a little tired near the end and I wanted him to have time to see the question.Yasmin InghamMy horse [B Exclusive] was really good, so honest and genuine. I made quite a few changes of plan A, B and sometimes C!Lizzie BaughOur earlier blip had taken the wind out of his [JL Dublins] sails so when we got to Huntsmans Close it was easier to go direct and then the pin came down with his hindlegs. Its one of those things and thats what pins are there for, but he tried his heart out.Tom McEwenI had the most amazing round. It was our first five-star weve only done two long 4-stars and there was a lot to do out there.Rafael LosanoColorado Blue Salty is in the form of his life and he is all heart. Hes more mature now and I am lucky to have him. There has been a lot of rubbish talked which I didnt listen to about the course being softer, but Eric Winter is a damn good designer. Its all a lot easier on a horse like this.Austin OConnorYouve really got to be on your game. I am so grateful for my owners, who got the horse [Valmy Biats] back for me last year. I adore him so much. Ive seen the finish line so many times and not made it, that this feels wonderful I rarely make it to Sunday, Im just so grateful.Emily KingIt was hard work out there we never really got the rhythm the size of the fences made him more careful than usual but my horse [DAccord FRH] is bold and fast. He helped me out a lot. It is an amazing atmosphere here with all the people screaming in excitement.Christoph Wahler [pictured]I am really happy with my horse [Master Point]. He is a blood horse with a big stride. He can get a bit hollow in the combinations and I need to be aware of that, so we played him straight and honest and let him see the fences. Its my first Badminton and I am really happy its a show like nothing else. I hadnt even walked the course before and its above and beyond what people say.Ian CassellsI am so lucky to have this horse. I backed Lordships Graffalo Walter as a three-year-old and I am so privileged to have a horse that is so calm, although he was shaking in the stable beforehand and shis eyes were out on stalks. He knows his job so well. Hes got a turn of foot but he is also rideable.Ros CanterAs far as I am concerned, there was no incident. My foot took the flag out but Cooley Rosalent jumped the fence. Its been a good day. I couldnt be prouder of both horses who are from different ends of the spectrum in experience.Oliver Townend on being given a flag penalty at fence 26:
