Exploring the Challenges and Opportunities of Neuromuscular-Based Equine Dentistry in the UK
Section Key Points Introduction Neuromuscular-based equine dentistry focuses on jaw and neuromuscular coordination. Presents challenges and opportunities in the UK. What is Neuromuscular-Based Equine Dentistry? Specialized approach for TMJ function to enhance neurological functioning. Involves adjusting incisors and molar surfaces. Benefits Improved jaw function, reduced pain and stress, enhanced performance through balanced dentition and TMJ alignment. Challenges in the UK Regulatory recognition, need for specialized training, limited public awareness. Opportunities for Growth Advanced training programs, technological advancements, specialized practices, international collaboration. Common Equine Dental Issues Sharp edges, hooks, ramps, and steps. Regular dental care can alleviate issues. Conclusion Neuromuscular-based dentistry enhances TMJ alignment and offers growth potential through education, technology, and collaboration. Challenges and Opportunities for Emerging Neuromuscular-Based Equine Dentistry in the UK Introduction As the equine world gallops forward, the dental health of our majestic companions is gaining unprecedented attention. Neuromuscular-based equine dentistry, an innovative field emphasizing the coordination of the jaw with the horse's neuromuscular function, has created quite a stir, presenting both challenges and opportunities. In this blog, we will delve into this transformative approach, explore its potential, and learn about its growth trajectory in the UK. Much like a horse trotting through unchartered territories, this field holds promises worth exploring. What is Neuromuscular-Based Equine Dentistry? Neuromuscular-based equine dentistry is a specialized approach aimed at maintaining or restoring the biomechanical function of a horse's temporomandibular joint (TMJ) to enhance overall neurological functioning. This procedure involves adjusting the inclination of the horse's incisors to provide stability to the TMJ, while also adjusting the molar table surface for optimal anatomical alignment. [1] Benefits of Neuromuscular-Based Equine Dentistry This approach offers a multitude of benefits to equines, enhancing their comfort and performance. Improved Jaw Function By ensuring optimal surface-to-surface contact between incisors and the right angle (typically 8-10 degrees), horses enjoy a full range of motion [2]. Reduced Pain and Stress Proper alignment of the TMJ and teeth can alleviate chronic tension in the head and neck, contributing to enhanced overall wellness. [2] Enhanced Performance Balanced dentition positively influences reflexes and proprioception, boosting performance and well-being. [2] Challenges in the UK Despite the benefits, several challenges plaque the development of this dental practice in the UK. Regulatory and Professional Recognition A major debate centers around whether equine dentistry should solely be conducted by veterinarians. The Australian Veterinary Association advocates this stance, which could influence UK practices. [3] Training and Certification Neuromuscular-based equine dentistry requires practitioners to possess specialized skills and knowledge. Unfortunately, UK training programs don't always meet these needs, highlighting an area ripe for development. Public Awareness Public knowledge about equine dentistry is limited, especially concerning neuromuscular-focused care. Promoting awareness among horse owners remains vital. Opportunities for Growth On the flip side, several opportunities could further the growth of neuromuscular-based equine dentistry in the UK. Advanced Training and Education Institutions like the Equine Dental Clinic (EDC) offer advanced training and Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Such programs can standardize and elevate practice within the industry. [4] Technological Advancements Cutting-edge imaging, such as digital oral video cameras and CT scanners, aid in the precision of equine dental treatments. Among these, the Siemens Somatron 40-slice CT scanner stands out as a modern tool. [4] Specialized Practices Establishing dedicated veterinary practices can provide expert care and enhance overall dental services. The Equine Dental Clinic provides an exemplary model. [4] International Collaboration Networking with international practitioners can breathe fresh life into the field by introducing new techniques, research, and experiences. [1] Common Equine Dental Issues and Solutions Recognizing common equine dental issues is fundamental to applying neuromuscular-based equine dentistry effectively. Sharp Edges, Hooks, and Ramps These obstructions limit the movement of the mandible, rendering eating uncomfortable. Regular dental care can alleviate these concerns. [5] Steps Developing when one cheek tooth outgrows others, steps are best addressed through regular attention from an equine dental technician. [5] Conclusion Neuromuscular-based equine dentistry presents a holistic approach, emphasizing TMJ alignment and functioning to enhance the well-being of horses. Although challenges exist relating to awareness, regulation, and training, seizing opportunities through education, technology, specialized practices, and collaboration promises tremendous growth potential. For horse owners, embracing this burgeoning field can only lead to healthier and happier equine enthusiasms.

Guidance on Body Protectors & Riding Hats for Horse Racing
Under the Rules of Racing, anyone who rides a horse on the racecourse or under the care of a licensed trainer must wear a BHA-approved helmet and body protector. From 17 October 2024, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) have updated the minimum safety specifications for riders. This is to ensure that up-to-date equipment is being used in line with industry best practice and internationally approved quality standards, to better protect riders against the risk of injury. Many riders will already be wearing models meeting the latest standards however the BHA, to support the transition, have put the following grace periods in place. This is to provide both riders and employers sufficient time to purchase new equipment where required:For anyone riding a horse on racecourse property (e.g. licensed jockeys riding in competition), the new rules will be enforced from 1 February 2025.For anyone riding a horse under the care of a licensed trainer (e.g. racing staff and jockeys riding out), the new rules will be enforced from 1 June 2025.Body Protectors for Horse RacingBody protectors are designed to absorb impact from a fall or kick from a horse. All body protectors for horse racing will need to meet certified safety standard (BS) EN 13158: 2018 and be of at least Level 2 standard. The 2009 version has now been withdrawn, and while there is no difference in the amount of protection offered by the 2009 and 2018 versions, it has been agreed to withdraw permission for the 2009 version due to the potential age that some of this equipment may have reached. The BHA also recommends that all body protectors worn when not for the purposes of race riding should meet Level 3 standard.Riding Hats to Wear When Horse RacingRiding hats must comply with at least two different international testing standards and should have evidence of Quality Testing from organisations such as BSI, INSPEC, SNELL, SEI.
