From the highs of Burghley, we headed to Blenheim where we had two horses, Amiro Island and Cooley Anything You Like, competing in the 4*S 8&9 year old class.Each of the horses showed real maturity in the dressage, with the main palace arena being a bigger stage than anything either had seen to date. Amiro Island is only 8 years old, but hes a very cool headed horse and is generally unphased by his surroundings. He also finds everything pretty easy and his flying changes, which are so often a sticking point for horses in the young horse class at Blenheim, are very natural and established.Cooley Anything You Like, albeit a year older than his stablemate, is less experienced and less established; this was his first foray into four-star competing and hes not quite as solid in each phase yet. That said, both horses put in strong performances in their tests and jumped well in the main area, especially Cooley Anything You Like whose jumping technique has really come on throughout the past twelve months. The cross country course at Blenheim is a rarity in that, although only a short, it has the galloping stretches and sweeping lines of a long. Amiro Island really impressed me his round only reinforced my suspicions that I think he will be a serious five-star campaigner in time. Having impressed around the short at Bramham in the spring, and again at Blenheim, he has little more to prove at the moment. After a decent holiday this autumn, well continue to produce him without pressure with the aim of a couple of four-star long events in 2025.Cooley Anything You Like came up with all the right answers concerning his bravery and scope, and now needs to continue to relax into a slightly easier and more refined way of travelling, so his gusto doesnt handicap his ability and rideability. 2024 is our first season together, he arrived off the back of a long lay off and it has been a very full and fruitful year for him with a lot of change for him to take on. We still have plenty of homework to do but hes in a very different place compared to 12 months ago and his future is looking bright. Before my cross country, I managed to do a team course-walk for daughter Lily and her teammates who competed at Blenheim in the Pony Club jumping. They were all extremely switched on and rode very impressively, and came away with a team win I only found out the result as I galloped past on Amiro Island shortly after, en route to the first water and spotted them heading up the lap of honour. It was a good shot in the arm to try to match up to their standards!Blenheim is such a brilliant venue for spectators and competitors alike and its wonderful how they include the grassroots for both children and adults.As the weather turns we have one more uk event, at Kelsall Hill in Cheshire, and then fly out to the US for the Maryland five-star to wrap up the 2024 season. I never like to count chickens until they hatch, but after the spring three-day-events we had five horses aiming for Burghley. Its been a decade-long plan to produce young horses through the grades and have a strong hand at five-star level, and some have been with us since they were three or four-year-olds. To produce them to five-star is a challenge, but then to keep them there, happy and confident and sound, is another matter. Even in the short window between the entries closing and a five-star event starting, a substantial proportion of the entrants drop out. So, I was coy when asked if I had anything for Burghley, knowing how fortunes can change so rapidly.Cometh the hour, all five were fully prepared and ready to go. To arrive at the start line of the toughest five-star in the world with five horses was an extraordinary achievement by our team so much work goes into it and the effort behind the scenes from the whole team at Church Farm has been tremendous. Photo Credits: FocusOnHorsesWith a maximum of three able to start, we had to select a who would go and who reroute to another five-star. We chose to run Cavalier Crystal (3rd at Burghley 2023), Annaghmore Valoner (Bramham winner 2024) and Superstition (previously 5th Kentucky & 7th Maryland twice), all three of whom I believed could be really competitive. Away Cruising, previously 6th Burghley and the most experienced of the bunch, and Et Hop du Matz, who at only 10 years old is the least experienced but probably the best cross country horses of them all, will both head across the Atlantic to the Maryland five-star in October.Although Superstition drew the short straw as pathfinder, he put in a strong performance in the dressage with solid score of 32.1. Cavalier Crystal followed with another solid test to creep ahead of Supersition on a score of 31.3. Annaghmore Valoner was the last of our gang to go and she really excelled herself for a score 27.8. Shes really settled down in her brain this year and has been consistently scoring in the mid 20s in her one-day events, so we had high hopes for her. She was a joy to ride in the arena and excitingly theres still more to come. As well as concentrating on the overall way of going of each horse, my aim was to nail the twelve flying changes and six pirouettes across the three tests, and was delighted by the end of the first phase that none had been missed between them. Derek di Grazia designed a great track with some really interesting 5* questions. On my first walk I did wonder why Id left Away Cruising and Et Hop du Matz behind. Superstition, first out of the start box, did a superb job as pathfinder, both for me and the rest of the field who were all waiting eagerly to see how it rode. He was absolute perfection from start to finish and popped round it as if it were a Novice course. Coming in off the back of some time out earlier in the year, and this being his first Burghley, I wanted to ensure there was enough petrol in the tank to get home he breezed up the last hill and through the finish with 10 time faults but full of running to meet a delighted team.Burghley is a big stamina test and until a horse has done it you dont really know what you have. In 2023 Cavalier Crystal took me by surprise with her speed and stamina so this year I knew I could ask a little more. Shes a true professional, brave as a lion and always looking for her lines, and gave me an epic ride all the way to come home with three seconds in hand.Annaghmore Valoner was the least known quantity of our three but she truly rose to the occasion and came out of cross country day having had a great experience and a better horse for it. Shes 75% TB and oozed quality all the way round and I was able to ease up at the end still finishing a whopping 11 second inside the time. Only four horses made the time all day and our two girls were the fastest of them! All three came out on Sunday morning feeling great and looking a picture. Superstition got us off to a great start in the show jumping with an immaculate clear, jumping out of order at the end of the morning session. Cavalier Crystal is probably the best jumper Ive ever ridden and gave me another class clear round to ensure herself a 5th place finish at worst. Annaghmore Valoner was lying in 3rd place ahead of the final phase. Shes also a great jumper and I wanted to put myself in a position where if anyone else faulted she could win it, so time faults were not an option. I perhaps made one roll back slightly tighter than I needed just touching the pole which came down dropping her from the possibitly of 2nd place to an eventual 4th place with Cavalier Crystal sneaking ahead into 3rd. Whatever wed done we werent able to beat Ros Canter and Lordships Graffalo who were deserved champions!As a team our focus for many years has been on producing horses to the very top level without losing sight of this goal. Im so proud of our team of horses and the team behind the scenes that we had really achieved our goals. Im grateful for the patience and belief that our wonderful owners have in the team and the system, which doesnt involve winning week in week out but waiting for the big occasion. The Belgian teams prowess in both jumping phases gave them their first Nations Cup victory of the season in the penultimate leg the FEI Eventing Nations Cup in French soil.They finished on a score of 143.9 after three of their four riders jumped double clears in the jumping and cross country phases. The other two teams competing were Great Britain and France but they lagged far behind in second and third respectively with scores of 1084.90 and 1108.60, after both teams lost two riders each to eliminations or withdrawals.Team Belgium moved their way up the leaderboard from last in the dressage to second after the jumping, rounding it off with a victory after three solid cross country performances around this demanding course. This was particularly impressive given their most experienced team member Lara de Liedekerke-Meier was eliminated on her mare Hooney DArville, while Steppe Vilain was best of the Belgians on Kawa de la Cour Z. The pair had 14.8cross country time penalties. Wouter de Cleese riding the 14-year-old Holstein mare Quintera, made up the Belgian quartet. They put in a solid performance to jumped clear in both phases with 19.2 time penalties in the Cross-Country.Former Olympian Kai-Steffan Meier is the Team Manager for the Belgian team and summed up his teams performance: It was a very strong cross country course and the ground was a factor due to the rain. After a good and solid dressage and jumping performance, I am obviously delighted with three clear rounds on the cross country. That this put us on the top of the podium is the cherry on the cake.In this CIC4* short format competition, the cross country saw a number well-seasoned equine and human athlete combinations have faults or eliminations, a stiff track designed by Pierre Le Goupil, course designer at the last Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Jumping faults were peppered around the course, but the early part of the track was particularly eventful for some athletes. The cross country clock also proved hard to beat, with no participants jumping clear inside the time.The Nations Cup Series now moves to The Netherlands were once again the prestigious Boekelo will play host to the final of this popular Series from October 10-13, which will run as a long format four-star competition.
