Ireland finished second in the five star BMO Nations Cup in Spruce Meadows overnight just falling short of retaining the crown they won in 2023 for the first time in 22 years. In a fiercely competitive competition, Ireland were just edged out by Germany as their anchor rider Jana Wargers delivered a clear round to secure victory on a team total of five faults. Ireland were runners up on eight faults, with Great Britain in third on a total of 10 faults. Horse Sport Ireland High Performance Show Jumping Director Michael Blake was understandably proud of his teams performance, if left rueing what might have been. It was in our hands, Blake said. But thats show jumping it was tough out there and it was really the finest of margins between winning and finishing second. The 2024 BEVA Congress (11-14 September, at the ACC in Liverpool) will be shining the spotlight on the horses foot with a lecture stream dedicated to the foot and farriery. The content aims to celebrate teamwork between vets and farriers, and has been curated by Dr Simon Curtis, who is internationally renowned in the hoof-care world for his remedial farriery textbooks and lectures.Any historical, perceived divide between science of veterinary medicine and the craft of farriery is no longer in existence, said Simon. The overlap is vast which means it is more essential than ever that vets, nurses and farriers understand each others roles in order to maximise their patient outcomes.Farriery isnt sexy, but it beats everything else for improving soundness. It is impossible to maintain or regain soundness without farriery being considered as an integral part of the process.The impact good farriery can have on a horses ability to tolerate conformational, work-related or other causes of lameness associated pathology is all too often overlooked by all parties, and this should no longer be the case. Vets and farriers must work as a team to avoid injury and facilitate recovery wherever possible.The sessions will explore various aspects of the connection between veterinary science and the craft of the farrier, including the following topics:Its not the shoe that fixes the horse its the trimHorseshoes have by bio-mechanical effects, but what are they?Why do heels collapse and can we repair them?Chronic club foot is manageable by farrieryDigital support may not be a cure-all but in many cases, it is effectiveTrimming the toe back: when did that ever work?The BEVA Congress is produced by equine vets for equine vets. Photo by Tilly Berendt.The field of competitors at the Defender Burghley CCI5* has thinned from 43 to 39 after this mornings final horse inspection, which took place after a night of heavy rain on site.Three of those losses to the start list occurred before the inspection even began: we saw early-morning withdrawals logged by Pippa Funnell and Majas Hope, who had been sitting 31st after a cross-country round in which theyd picked up a flag penalty and 19.6 time penalties; Holly Richardson and Bally Louis, whod been 36th after adding a 20 and 30 time penalties; and Tom McEwen and CHF Cooliser, whod delivered one of the rounds of the day to sit 14th.Jennie Brannigan and FE Lifestyle. The Underwriting Exchange Irish Show Jumping are CSIO4* Longines EEF Series runners-up after finishing second following a jump-off in Warsaw this afternoon. Led by Taylor Vard in the Polish capital, the team of Jessica Burke with Express Trend (ISH), Jenny Rankin with Ibiza, Seamus Hughes Kennedy with ESI Rocky (ISH) and Francis Derwin with Flexi K (ISH) jumped brilliantly throughout but were just beaten into second place. The Irish finished on a score of eight faults, level with Italy after a dramatic afternoon of jumping, with Germany in third on 12 faults. It had come right down to the wire with Italy close to sealing the win in round two before a final fence pole down for their anchor rider meant the jump-off would be needed. Hughes Kennedy performed brilliantly in against the clock, setting a clear round time of 42.42 seconds on ESI Rocky, but Piergiorgio Bucci and Hantano []

The 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Native River was the convincing winner of the SEIB Insurance Brokers Racehorse to Riding Horse qualifier at Defender Burghley Horse Trials today (Sunday 8 September).Ridden by Jazmin Hosgood, the duo will now contest the championship at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) in October.Twenty ex-racehorses came forward in total, with runner-up Wonga Swinger, ridden by new mum Tori Thomas, also collecting a ticket to HOYS.Our winner went amazingly. He was like an out and out show horse to ride, said ride judge Michael Bowling.Stuart Campbell, who judged conformation, added: It was the presentation, movement, balance, rhythm and self-carriage of the winner that set him apart. It is wonderful to see ex-racehorses becoming truly multi-purpose horses.A beautiful journeyDuring his racing days, Native River won over 1 million in prize money and was ridden by champion jockey Richard Johnson in many of his races.The now 14-year-old gelding was trained by Colin Tizzard in Somerset before retiring to his owner Tom Malones nearby yard.Im as proud as I could be of this horse. I get more pleasure than I can tell you out of this success, said Tom.We set out with this as our goal and hes gone and done it. I bought him as a four-year-old out of a yard in Ireland after hed unseated his jockey in a point-to-point and its been a beautiful journey ever since.Jazmin, who trains point-to-pointers and had two maiden winners last season, used to work for Tom and rides Native River regularly, including hunting.It was a big atmosphere today and he was just amazing, she said of the horse. We went to Moreton Show yesterday and won too. He is absolutely Toms baby.Native River goes out in the field every day and will do plenty of hacking before HOYS and hopefully a hunter trial.He also won a big jockeys jumping competition with Harry Cobden a few weeks ago, added Jazmin, who has ridden at HOYS once before, back in 2012 when she won the SEIB Search for a Star Riding Horse Hack final.Wonga Swingers turn aroundWonga Swinger was previously in training with his rider/owner Toris husband, the former Cheltenham Gold Cup winning jockey Sam Thomas.Wonga Swinger wasnt very successful for me. Photo by Tilly Berendt.And so we find ourselves on the edge of our seats, chomping at the bit to discover who will take home the Burghley trophy, but theres much more than the glory, impressive purse and gorgeous piece of silverware at stake this year, for the winner will also be awarded with their weight in beer courtesy of Hawkestone. Its not clear whether theyve committed to the riders weight, the horses, or both, but theres for sure an argument that eventing is very much a whole team effort and therefore horse, rider, owners, grooms, sponsors, breeders, and the entire team at home are all winners. (Can we go as far as sire and dam?) Just saying. But before we go about inviting ourselves to the champions celebrations to share the spoils, theres the small matter of keeping the poles in the cups and the top 20 are waiting in the wings to have a go at doing just that.Things are due to kick off at 2:15pm local time / 3:15pm CET / 9:15am ET with Britains Harry Meade and Cavalier Crystal getting things underway in this afternoons session, jumping out of order as Harry has no fewer than three rides in the top 15; they come into the final phase in 5th place. The rest of the competitors are due to come forward in reverse order, although Harry had his round with 15th placed Superstition this morning, jumping clear inside the time and finishing on a score of 42.9.Fighting for their weight in beer at the top of the table as things stand are:1 Britains Ros Canter with Lordships Graffalo on a, frankly, ridiculous score of 22 are looking to do the double with a win at both the big Bs after coming out on top at Badminton last year.2 3.5 points behind is New Zealands Tim Price with Vitali on 25.5.3 And 2.3 points behind them is Britains Harry Meade with Annaghmore Valoner on a score of 27.8.Basically, Ros doesnt have a fence in hand over Tim, who doesnt have a fence in hand over Harry, who doesnt have a fence in hand over Gaspard Maksud and Zaragoza in 4th, or himself with Cavalier Crystal in 5th. Its tight at the top and were in for an exciting finale to Defender Burghley! Alice reminds Topspin to shorten up through the treble with a Woah and hes right with her. The whole shebang looks sweet and easy and they finish with a clear round. They put it behind them but theres an uncomfortable looking jump at the vertical at 10 but theyre clear. The oxer out of the double at 11 is a similar story to the one they had at 5 and that goes. He taps the first part of the treble at 8 and gives not an inch over the two verticals coming out, but all the poles stay put. They take out the second part of the double at 11 and then clear the final fence. They tap their way through the treble combination at 8 but all the poles stay put. Theyre careful through the double at 11 and finish up with a great jump over the Defender Finale. They tap the first part of the treble combination at 8 but it stays. They continue on clear and the horse really is showing off her superb jumping ability. Ros Canter cemented her place as one of eventings greats by adding her first Defender Burghley CCI5* victory to her already extensive CV today (Sunday 8 September).The 38-year-old joins an elite group of riders to win both Burghley and Badminton.The magnificent Lordships Graffalo carried her to both titles Ros won the latter in 2023 and they set a new record finishing score of 23.6 penalties at Burghley.This victory which comes with a 110,000 pay cheque comes off the back of a team gold medal at the Paris Olympics a few weeks ago.Ros Canter described Walter, who is owned by Michele and Archie Saul and also carried her to dual European gold last year, as being a legend in his own right.What other horse at the age of 12 has achieved what he has in recent years? she said.Im just a lucky person to be able to pilot a horse like him. I felt really confident, brave to go out there and be me, and Ive stuck to my system.I havent asked questions of everyone else about how to ride a course, what strides theyre going on. Last year, to be in the lead and to fall from grace, whereas this time hes been solid the whole way through with three good phases, which means you should net a good result at the end, said Tim.He was really present and with me [for the showjumping]. I think thats half the key with him. He loves the crowds. Every time someone jumped clear and they get a big roar, you can just feel him lift [in the warm up] so I made sure he was right at the gate for the person before me.As soon as you go in with that atmosphere hes like, okay, game on.[This] is what we all do it for, continued Tom. It can be a gruelling job at times, but moments like this at the likes of Badminton and Burghley are what we do it for.6th: Gaspard Maksud and ZaragozaGaspard Maksud, 31, brought the 11-year-old mare Zaragoza to Burghley after being long-listed for the French Olympic team but not making the final cut.Their sixth placing here makes them the best of the first timers in 2024.7th: Nicolas Touzaint and Absolut Gold HdcAnother Frenchman in the top 10 is Nicolas Touzaint, the 44-year-old rider who won Olympic team silver in Paris and is former winner of both Badminton and Pau.His Burghley partner was Absolut Gold Hdc.8th: Alex Bragg and QuindivaAlex Bragg takes Quindiva pure showjumping and they have competed at Horse of the Year Show before.Their prowess in this phase helped them net eighth place with a confident clear round inside Burghleys main arena.They were also the first to finish yesterdays cross-country track clear and inside the optimum time a feat that only three more horses would go on to achieve.Alex and Quindiva finished third at Badminton earlier this year, and they were 15th at Burghley in 2023.9th: Gemma Stevens and Chilli KnightAlthough she confessed to feeling horrendous before her cross-country round due to nerves, 39-year-old Gemma Tattersall piloted Chilli Knight into ninth.The 14-year-old chestnut gelding, who the one-off Bicton CCI5* in 2021, looked set to win Badminton this year until they were handed 15 penalties for a missed flag in Huntsmans Close.10th: Alice Casburn and TopspinAlice Casburn and Topspin pulled off their third Burghley showjumping clear round on the trot to secure the seventh top-20 placing of their five-star career.He was phenomenal, said Alice. I came in today and thought ooh, three clear rounds on the trot, thats a rather big ask, but he was incredible in there.I felt him light up as I went in. I wasnt where I wanted to be [for every fence] but he helped me out like the legend he is.Sixteen-year-old Topspin is home-bred by Alices mother, Caroline.Hes actually the favourite child, smiled Alice.Someone said the other day, if she had to pick between me and Spin, shed definitely pick Spin.As much as hes a competition horse, hes also a family pet. We adore him and he still has his old ways that he had when he was tiny, so its really sweet.A great weekend of sportThe final scoreboard shows that there were 14 clear rounds from 39 starters today.
