The U.S. Jumping Team captured their third consecutive Olympic silver medal today in the Show Jumping Team Final here at the Chteau de Versailles in France. In addition to Paris 2024, they also won silver in the Tokyo 2020/21 Olympics Games and Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games. Great Britain won gold today with a total of two penalties (their last Olympic jumping team medal was gold in 2012 in London). Home country France took the bronze on a score of seven penalties (their last Olympic show jumping medal was gold in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro).The U.S. Olympic Show Jumping Team on the podium with their silver medals. Photo by Cealy TetleyAbout the CourseCo-designed by Santiago Varela from Spain and Grgory Bodo from France, the course today was a bit more technically challenging today according to some of the riders. It was a bit longer in length too, yet the time allowed was the same as yesterday. There were 14 obstacles with 18 jumping efforts, including two doubles (which was one more than yesterday) and one triple combination. Time allowed was 79 seconds, the course length was 310 meters, and the prescribed speed was 400 meters/minute. Fence heights ranged from 0.9 meters to 1.65 meters. There was no water jump today, but there were liverpool jumps (essentially a pan of water under or behind a set of standards and rails). Many French landmarks and cultural items were incorporated into the design of the jumps again; there was one jump that looked like the base of the Eiffel Tower and one with standards that looked like the Arc de Triomphe, for instance.McLain Ward and Ilex soar over the Eiffel Tower jump. (There were supposed to be 10 teams, but at the very last minute the Mexican team had to withdraw due to a veterinary issue for one of their horses, Carlos Hank Guerreiros horse Porthos Maestro WH Z, leaving nine teams and 27 riders on the start list). Any jumping or time faults a rider incurred were added to their teams cumulative score and the lowest score won. The teams competing today were: Belgium; France; Germany; Great Britain; Ireland; Israel; the Netherlands; Sweden, and the USA.After two riders for each team took their turn around the course and the scores were tallied during a ring grooming break, the final rider from each country jumped the course in reverse order of the standings (so, the top teams riders went toward the end in the final group). That put riders from the Netherlands, Ireland, USA, France, Sweden and Great Britain as the final countries to go in the last group.When others dropped rails, but the USAs McLain Ward and Ilex and Great Britains Scott Brash and Jefferson left them up, the medals were finally decided. Even though Brash and Jefferson had a time fault, they carried Great Britain to a two-point victory. Photo courtesy US EquestrianU.S. Team Steps UpTeam members Karl Cook (making his Olympic debut riding Caracole de la Roque), Laura Kraut (four-time Olympianplus a year as an alternateriding Baloutinue) and McLain Ward (six-time Olympian riding Ilex) earned their red, white and blue stripes by laying down two days of stellar team jumping rounds. They carried on a long tradition of U.S. show jumpers winning Olympic hardware.Yesterday, the U.S. team finished on only six faults in the qualifier class, which easily put them into todays team final. Today, starting on zero again, they only had four penalties to take the silver. Each day, two of the USAs team riders jumped clear and within time, with the third rider only having one rail down. In the qualifier class yesterday, McLain Ward had one rail and two time faults for the total of six. Today, Laura Kraut and Baloutinue pulled one rail, but finished well within the time allowed.Yesterday Kraut admitted to being quite nervous before her ride, but today she felt more confident, Today Im great. Im disappointed I had one down, but he performed beautifully. Im surprised that he had that down, but he kind of looked at it a little bit and I had maybe too much momentum. Photo courtesy US EquestrianCook had been the traveling reserve rider for the U.S. team with Caracole de la Roque, but was called up to compete in the very early hours of yesterday when Kent Farringtons mare Greya horse showed signs of an allergic reaction (Greya is reported to be doing well now). Cook and Caracole de la Roque stepped up beautifully, producing two double-clear rounds in two days and making it look easy in the process.The pair had also been members of the U.S. team for the Santiago Pan American Games last fall. At that time, Caracole de la Roque was still a fairly new ride for Cook and he was still figuring out the best way to ride her. They have really gelled since then and he rides her in a hackamore in competition (although he uses a different bridle on her in the warm-up ring, then switches to the hackamore).Cook talked about the course and his horse after his ride today, Its a really tough course out there, as it should belonger, bigger, wider, more careful, more technical than yesterday. It requires you to ride on the track that suits the stride you have. Shes such an amazing horse [Caracole]. She stuck with me the whole time. I couldnt be happier. We had a strong one in Rio, but this team was stronger and certainly a stronger team than we had in Tokyo. What they pulled off in Tokyo was great.We have three of the greatest riders that have ever ridden for our country on this team, Kent Farrington, Laura Kraut and McLain Ward, Ridland continued. And then we brought him, [Karl Cook]. But what that is, is thats the present and the future. The first thing he [Karl] said when we talked about him travelling was, Im here to do whatever I need to do to help the other three do whatever is needed for the sport. Well, guess what? He did. Because that is, as McLain said, thats one of the hardest things to do to get a last-minute [call up] two hours before.Ridland marveled at the venue and the crowd in the grandstands, Theres not an empty seat in the house. This is the sport at its best. It was an amazing Games. I hear the President of France was here for the whole event. In partnership with EquisafetyTheres a lot you can encounter whilst out on a hack, so its best to be prepared for what may lay ahead. Whether youre going for a gentle ride around a village, a quiet trek along a bridleway or enjoying a new route on a fun ride, chances are youll come across something that may challenge you and your horse.Being prepared for the unexpected (as far as you can) will help both you and your horse to stay calm and feel confident, even when encountering something new.No horse is immune to a spook or two, especially if something startles them. By introducing them to new situations in a controlled way, you can improve your confidence so you dont have to worry when youre hacking out.If you have an incident or near miss (with a vehicle or dog, for example) whilst hacking out, remember to report it to the BHS online or using the Horse i app.VehiclesIf you use the roads, youll be more than familiar with passing cars, lorries, vans and motorbikes. It can be daunting to share the road with other users, so preparing your horse will go a long way to feeling safer.Try riding out with another horse who is confident around traffic and can act as a nanny if you or your horse are nervous. If you are really struggling, practise riding around parked cars on the yard first, and build up from here.You could also ride in an arena with a vehicle in there or in the field close to a tractor. Exposing your horse to these sights and sounds in a controlled way such as this helps to build their confidence.Some riders are understandably unnerved by almost silent electric vehicles, as these could catch your horse unaware and cause them to spook. However, new research has found that horses can detect the low-level noises produced by electric vehicles, and they can be aware of them before the rider.Wearing as much high vis as you can to make you as visible as possible will give other road users more time to spot you and slow down.Opening gatesIf youre tallying up 1,000 miles, its something youll likely come across at one point or another: gates. Stay on or get off? Its a great debate amongst horse riders. Either way, the best thing to do is practise before you leave the yard so you know youll be safe either way.If you plan to dismount, be sure you can remount afterwards or, if necessary, get on from the ground or using a bank as mounting block.If you plan to open and close gates whilst still on board, make sure you and your horse are both confident at home. Teach your horse to turn-on-the-forehand, as this is the manoeuvre youll be asking him to perform as you open and close the gate.For more help, check out our guide to opening and closing gates.Sudden noisesWee all been there the ill-timed car horn, or the loud petrol mower on the other side of the hedge that your horse knowsis an equine-eating monster waiting to grab him. It can be unsettling, and while you cant prevent every spook from sudden noises, you can desensitise him to make him less likely to turn tail and run.At home, try introducing your horse to new sounds in a safe situation. For example, you could find a recording online of a leaf blower or power washer, and play that while he eats his dinner. Soon enough, he should become accustomed to the sound.If youre ready to step it up a notch, try playing different recordings during other jobs, like when you groom or are schooling when hes used to it. If you have a friend to help and think your horse is ready, you could even try this exercise from Eloise Mayhead, stable manager at the City of Londons Mounted Branch.The next stage is to introduce your horse to the actual sounds in their safe place. This could be a car horn, mower starting, or any other sound.Do this whilst he eats and then gradually build up to riding. Team GB have secured their fourth equestrian medal of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games so far, with the dressage team winning bronze in todays Grand Prix Special.Three stunning tests performed by Becky Moody, Carl Hester and Charlotte Fry scored highly enough for a podium finish, but they didnt impress the judges quite as much as Germany and Denmark. The German team were last to go and in a nail-biting finale, they managed to edge ahead of the Danes, taking home gold.There was only a tiny margin between first and second place, with Germany scoring 235.790% and Denmark 235.669%. Team GB closely followed with 232.492%.Becky Moody and Jagerbomb were first to go of the Brits and managed to produce their best ever score for this test at this level 76.489% which put them into the lead.My horse was amazing, hes only young, he just went in there and was so cool, Becky said of her homebred 10-year-old, whose father, Dante Weltino OLD, was also competing in the final under Swedens Therese Nilshagen.Becky was a late swap in to the British team when Charlotte Dujardin withdrew, but despite the pressure, she said the team have been nothing but supportive.[They] have been incredible and havent put any pressure on me at all, Becky explained. Its a massive team effort. Carl has helped me an awful lot here and my other coach, David Hunt. Theyre all such fundamental parts [of the team]. Were the tip of the iceberg, just me and the horse. The team that get us there is enormous, so its everybodys success.Becky added that the Olympic experience had been crazy.This place is amazing, the stadium is beautiful, the crowd are fantastic, she added. Its been pretty insane.Carl Hester was second to go for the British team and he and a rather exuberant Fame scored a very respectable 76.489%. He clawed back his marks from a small mistake when Fame took over slightly, but he still did enough to retain the premier position, but not for long.Denmark overtook the lead, followed by Germany, leaving Team GB taking up third place before Charlotte Fry entered the Versailles arena.Charlotte pulled off a stunning test with Glamourdale, scoring 79.483%, with the 13-year-old stallion looking incredible as he showed off his enormous power and control. His trademark extended canter wowed the judges, but their valiant efforts werent quite enough to better third position.Denmarks Catherine Laurdrop Dufour and Freestyle followed, achieving a score of 81.216% with their precise performance.It was then Germanys turn to strive for the gold medal. Jessica von Bredow and Werndl pulled off a practically immaculate test, but it was touch-and-go if they had done enough to win. However, their score was fractionally higher than the Danes, so the formidable defending champions once again took gold.Tomorrow (Sunday 4 August) the dressage action concludes with the Freestyle, the individual final and medal decider.
