Sara Cox to join Blenheim reporting team
Radio DJ, presenter and author Sara Cox will be meeting up with top eventers and their fans when she attends Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials on Saturday 21 September.Sara is a keen equestrian and owns Nellie, a part bred thoroughbred mare. She is a big fan of eventing and said she cant wait to help the team at the horse trials open up the sporting action to a wider audience. The broadcaster will be supporting the event with social media posts and interviewing riders as they finish the cross-country on the Saturday. She will also be sharing a promotional code for tickets with her social media followers.Watching eventing live is one of my favourite horsey things to do apart from riding my lovely Nellie, said Sara. Where else do you get the opportunity to see three equine sports in one event and be truly in awe of the amazing horses and riders who take on huge cross-country fences as well as dancing delicately in the dressage phase. My favourite part is the showjumping some people might remember me being in Only Fools on Horses back in 2006, a TV showjumping competition which raised over 250,000 for Sport Relief, so I can relate a little bit to the riders here and the skill they all so obviously have.Horse Trials Event Organiser, Katrina Midgley added that the team were really looking forward to working with Sara. She is a great representative of all horse owners and a true fan of the sport, she said. I cant wait to hear her chats with the riders I am sure it will be very entertaining.Come along and enjoy the event and bring your families, friends and your dogs.Lead image of Ros Canter and Izilot DHI at Blenheim Palace. 2024 Paris Olympics: Q&A with Adrienne Lyle of the U.S. Olympic Dressage Team
Horse Illustrateds coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics is presented by CareCredit.Making her third Olympic appearance for the U.S. Olympic Dressage Team, Adrienne Lyle has arrived in Paris with two new additions: her new mount, Helix, and her 9-month-old daughter, Bailey.A 2012 Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Zen Elite Equestrian Center and cared for by Marina Lemay, Helix was purchased with the Olympics in mind for Lyle in late 2023. The horse and rider team competed together on just a handful of occasions in spring 2024, but quickly made it clear that they make for an impressive duo.Horse Illustrated had a quick chat with Lyle ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics to discuss this years Games.Horse Illustrated: What qualities do you look for in an Olympic horse?Adrienne Lyle: When were searching for horses for the Olympics and high performance, we obviously need them to have the physical capabilities and the physical talent to do it. But a huge part of the equation is their heart, how hard they try for their rider, how intelligent they are, and how much they enjoy learning new things. Because to get to the Grand Prix level, they have to really be open to constantly learning new things and evolving. So their character is also very, very important.HI: What has been the biggest challenge for you in your journey to the 2024 Olympics?Lyle: This year, my journey to the Olympics was unique for two different reasonsone of which is that Helix and I are a new partnership. Thats not something I had done before in my career, so theres a lot of new challenges and things to figure out with getting a horse in a shorter timeframe. And the other thing that made it challenging, or at least different, was that Im a new mother. I had a daughter at the end of September of last year (2023), so theres been lots of new additions to my life this season.Paris 2024 US Dressage Team members Adrienne Lyle and Helix competing in May 2024 at Terra Nova in Florida. This will be Lyles third Olympics. Photo by Susan J. Stickle.comHI: How does having previous Olympic experiences help you prepare for this years Olympics?Lyle:This will be my third Olympic Games and for sure every time you go, you learn such an incredible amount. Not just about riding and competing, but also what it means to be a good teammateto be there for other competitors and the honor of representing your country.HI: What are you most looking forward to about this years Olympics?Lyle:French pastries!HI: What is your favorite Olympic sport outside of equestrian?Lyle:Outside of equestrian, I love to watch the track and field and gymnastics. They are just, to me, the pinnacle of amazing things that the human body can do. And its pretty cool to get to see them train and compete in person.HI: How has motherhood changed your preparation for the Olympics?Well, besides the fact I cant get anywhere on time ever again for the rest of my life, its added just a different element being in Europe here and having my daughter with me. So were not only focused on the training, but also obviously the role of being her mom and just figuring out how to delegate our time. It hasnt taken away anything from the training; Im still training just as hard and just as focused as before. Its just kind of added another fun dimension to it.Find all of our coverage, brought to you by CareCredit, on our Paris 2024 Olympic Games main page. The post 2024 Paris Olympics: Q&A with Adrienne Lyle of the U.S. Olympic Dressage Team appeared first on Horse Illustrated Magazine.

Endangered Przewalski Horses Surface at Livestock Auctions
There are about 2,500 Przewalski horses left in the world, making them an endangered species. At one point, there were only 12 horses left, but thanks to captive breeding programs their numbers have increased. Due to their endangered status, they are heavily monitored, and kept only in zoos or their specific areas of reintroduction. So, not exactly the kind of horse youd expect to show up at your local livestock auction.Oh June 9, the Lazy B Equine Rescue and Sanctuary announced on Facebook that an owner had surrendered a very strange looking, hard to control mare. The horse had been purchased from an auction, listed as a mule, but she couldnt be handled by the new owner. The rescue immediately thought something was strange, and wondered if this could be a Przewalski horse. They decided to get the horse DNA tested. They named this unusual animal, Fiona.A few days after that, on June 11, a different Przewalski emerged, this time a stallion.on June 12, Kentucky Humane Society Equine Care posted this with the following caption: This is wild, sharing something going around social media today:This horse was sold out of the Peabody Kill PenTurns out after being dna tested it is 100 percent rare PRZEWALSKI. He is a stallion and is needed to help keep the breed going. The government will be buying him from the owner to be put back with his herd. How he was captured and ended up at a auction is a mystery. What in the world. The owner of the stud decided to post some tik toks about their new horse after seeing the rescues post. She said that they saw him listed on an online livestock auction in Kansas, and knew immediately what he was. She bought him, and a friend held in him quarantine for about a month, before he came home. Hes been at his new home in Oklahoma for two months. As an homage to the mare, they named him, Shrek. The new owner made various tik toks about Shrek, but she does appear to be underage, so Im not going to share her posts. But in them, she tells his origin story, and that they pulled his hair for a DNA test. The results showed he was pure Przewalski. Theycontacted a zoo and a brand board, who said she can most likely keep the horse. This is a pretty strange reaction for an animal on the endangered species list.According to the owner: Every Przewalski alive is being tracked, but the system lost track of around 4 horses (1 stud and 3 mares). They found out the mares died, but they werent 100% sure. Shrek is most likely that missing stud. And just recently a mare was surrendered to a rescue in UT.. theres a chance she is one of those lost mares. But whoever had these horses was keeping them illegally. I decided to post him because I saw that video of the mare. Anyways, we plan on keeping him only for his sake, but we still arent sure what that looks like.. I will keep yall updated.Shreks owner had backlash. She is young, and her social media was age appropriately immature, so perhaps people may have assumed the worst. People doubted her story. She was told she wasnt able to house the horse. She was accused of seeking attention. People begin to believe she was an unreliable narrator. She shut off her comment sections.Fiona the PrzewalskiSo we have two (2) animals with endangered status in private hands. This is very interesting because there are protections in place to keep endangered animals safe. The US is part of the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species, which regulates or bans international trade of species under threat. Przewalskis would fall under this, but yet it seems no one in government knew of these horses existence. So either the horses were smuggled into the country without any tracking, or they were part of a herd already in the US.If these animals were already in the US, the Endangered Species Act makes it illegal to sell, although possibly only over states lines (Im not a lawyer, so I may be interpreting this wrong). Its also illegal to process any endangered species without a permit. The ESA makes note that Captive bred wildlife permits are not issued to keep or breed endangered or threatened animals as pets.If Im understanding this correctly, this law would mean that neither new owner can keep these animals, as they need to be in a permitted facility, and are not allowed to be kept as a pet. Lazy B has been upfront that they will hand over the horse to the proper authority, as soon as that is figured out. Shreks owner has said they are keeping him.On July 11, Lazy B Equine Rescue released the results of Fionas DNA test. Texas A&Ms School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences had run a test on the the hair they had received. They marked her as Przewalski, noting they didnt see any signs of the other breeds of horse they check for, so they added Przewalski to their panel. They told the rescue to get a Karyotyping test to check the chromosomes to be sure. The only way to be 100% sure that the horse is Przewalski is to run a blood test to check for those additional chromosomes, but based on all the evidence presented, its pretty certain this is a Przewalski. After Fionas results were made public, Shreks owner made their results public. They had used the same lab, so they results were basically identical, but she received her results just under a month ago. The dates on her papers said they received the sample on June 14 and had their results on June 17. She had sent the sample in immediately after this whole thing started, even though she was claiming at that point to have had the results for a full month.Although it seems minor, it makes you wonder how much of the story shes telling is true. Is there some unknown tracking system that lost track of a stud and three mares? How does someone lose endangered animals? Did a random zoo and a brand agency really tell her she could keep the stud? Do they even have that kind of authority? Maybe she is telling the truth, but something isnt making sense here. The 3 mares and a stud escaped, rumor keeps getting repeated over social media, but Im not sure where it originated. It seems to have come from Shreks owner, but theres no reports of any missing animals from any authority. No zoo has reported horses missing, and no agency has reported any kind of escape. If these animals were part of a herd anywhere in the US, they would have been registered under a permit issued by the ESA. Wouldnt the owner be looking for these extremely valuable horses?Shreks owner also said they found out more about the horses history, but she has not said what it is. It may be an important piece to the puzzle, or it could be something inconsequential.Right now we have no real answers, but oddly enough, no authority seems to be speaking out. No government agency has provided any answers, or given any kind of statement, despite both horse owners apparently seeking guidance. This has just led to the internet to speculate on what exactly is going on here. One theory seems to be these were part of an illegal, unregistered breeding herd and escaped, which is why no owner has come forward. They would rather just let the horses go than risk the punishment theyd receive for having these animals.Another theory focuses on the rumor of the three mares and a stud. People are saying that they escaped from quarantine, two of the mares died, and I guess the remaining stud and mare were just found on the side of the road and brought to an auction? (*note, its unclear if these horses were found at the same livestock auction.) Theres so many questions of how the government would not be aware of these horses being imported into the US, or if this was a zoo transfer, why is there no record? Theres no record of where these horses came from, and no zoo or owner claiming them.Theres no real answers at the point. Its a mystery that has fascinated the internet. Hopefully well have some answers soon, and an understanding of how two endangered animals seemed to slip through their protections.(Fascinating image, only somewhat related to story)(1904) Vaska, the first Przewalski horse from the wild to reach Europe, and the only known one to be ridden. A Closer Look at the Versailles Equestrian Stadium
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Official FEI (@fei_global) The finishing touches are being put on the newly-constructed temporary stadium at the Palace of Versailles grounds ahead of the Olympics, which begin in just under two weeks. While we have yet to get an official look at the cross country course Pierre le Goupil has been hard at work designing, well take these sneak peeks as they come! The following excerpts are taken from an FEI press release, which can be read in full here.InfrastructureThe cross country test will take place in wooded areas of the Park, along the banks of and across the Grand Canal. Visitors to the Park rarely walk through these areas and works to clear the woods had to be conducted. These have made them sounder and have improved their overall condition thus leaving a positive legacy for the estate. The sports facilities as well as the grandstands put in place for the Olympic and Paralympic Games have been constructed with the greatest care to provide ease of access and comfort for the athletes, horses, support personnel, media and spectators. They have been built to showcase the picturesque setting without harming the exceptional historical heritage.StablingThe horses will be stabled by discipline at Paris 2024. All the stables will have spacious, comfortable boxes (4m x 3m) with rubber mats. Bedding either straw or shavings is all sourced in France. Each horse will be accompanied by a groom who will care for its comfort and well-being at all times, both in competition and in the stable. There will be plenty of areas for the horses to go out and graze. The large surface of these areas will allow for good availability adapted to the number of horses present on the site at any one time.Horses have been stabled at Versailles for centuries. The Great and Small Stables were commissioned by Louis XIV during the 17th century to accommodate the households horses and became the greatest royal construction project for housing horses ever undertakeMore on the Palace of VersaillesThe Palace of Versailles is one of the great achievements in French art and architecture. It grew from being a small brick and stone hunting pavilion in the 17th century to the grandest palace in Europe during its heyday under Louis XIV, the Sun King. This magnificence estate remained the home of the French monarchy until the Revolution of 1789.Since then, it has found a new role as Museum of the History of France and major tourist attraction. The Estate of Versailles is composed of the Palace, the gardens, the Park, the Trianon estate and several buildings in town. It spreads over more than 800 hectares more than twice the size of New York Citys Central Park while the Palace contains 2,300 rooms. The Palace of Versailles welcomes almost eight million visitors a year and is Frances third most visited attraction.
