Ireland finished fifth in todays fourth and final qualifying leg of the 2026 Longines League of Nations series, with a total of 20 faults at St Tropez-Gassin in France.The Irish team, led by Horse Sport Ireland High Performance Jumping Manager Jessica Krten, produced a gritty performance against the worlds leading nations, finishing ahead of the USA, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Switzerland in the final standings.Irelands team of Trevor Breen and Highland President, Mark McAuley and Clooney van Spalbeek Z, Billy Twomey and Ace of Hearts Z, and Shane Breen and Scarteen completed the opening round on eight faults before adding 12 faults in the second round.Irelands opening round saw Twomey produce a clear round with Ace of Hearts Z, while Trevor Breen, McAuley and Shane Breen each added four faults. With the best three scores counting, Ireland finished Round 1 on eight faults and qualified for the second round among the top eight teams.The format then becomes even more demanding in Round 2. Only the top eight nations from Round 1 return, and each team selects three riders to jump again. Unlike the opening round, there is no discard score in Round 2 all three results count. The penalties from the two rounds are then combined, with the team finishing on the lowest total taking victory.For Ireland, Trevor Breen, McAuley and Twomey were selected to return for the second round.Breen produced one of the highlights of the Irish performance, delivering a brilliant clear round with Highland President, completing the course in 71.28 seconds. It was an important performance as Ireland began the second round with no margin for a discard score.McAuley and Clooney van Spalbeek Z added four faults, while Twomey and Ace of Hearts Z finished on eight faults meaning 12 faults were added to the opening eight-fault opening-round score to finish on 20 faults overall.Breens performance was particularly notable, with the Tipperary man bouncing back from a desperately unlucky four faults at the water in the opening round before returning to produce a clear when every second-round score counted.His clear with Highland President was the first of Irelands three second-round scores and ensured the team remained firmly in contention as the final round unfolded.McAuley also delivered a consistent performance across both rounds, scoring four faults each time with the nine-year-old Clooney van Spalbeek Z, while Twomeys clear in Round 1 with Ace of Hearts Z helped Ireland secure its place in the top eight before the second-round test.The final Irish score of 20 faults placed the team fifth, behind France on four faults, Brazil and Belgium on eight, and Italy on 16 faults.France claimed victory on home soil, with Nina Mallevaey, Antoine Ermann, Simon Delestre and Julien Epaillard combining for a final score of just four faults.Todays competition at the Haras de Gassin Polo Club Saint-Tropez brought the four-leg qualifying series to a close. The FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championships concludes with three medals for Irish riders across the three age categories. The Irish riders were well represented across all ages in the finals today in Lanaken, Belgium following two days of qualifiers on Thursday and Friday. Thirty-eight five-years-old horses jumped double clear on the qualifying days to secure their place in the final, while the forty-two of the highest ranked six and seven-year-olds booked their place in the finals.Five-Year-OldsFor the first time, the second round of the five-year-old final was judged on optimum time, making it a new challenge for riders to navigate while also leaving the fences standing. The time for the second round was 54 seconds with the final line facing away from screens and the pocket. Ireland was represented by nine Irish combinations in the five-year-old final while six Irish riders and four Irish Sport Horses finished in the top thirteen. Coen Williams and GLC Mr President (ISH) had an early draw and stopped the clock 0.18sec off the optimum time, it seemed impossible to beat until Sam Widger and Vintage Van De Heyveldhoeve (BWP) completed just 0.14 seconds off the optimum time to push Williams into Silver Medal. Securing qualifying places is extremely difficult with over two hundred competitors in each of the five and seven-year-old sections and over two hundred and fifty in the six-year-old qualifiers. Both the six- and seven-year-old qualifiers required strong performances each day with the combined scores over the two days deciding the top forty horses to qualify for the finals, while the five years olds had to jump a clear round both days to secure their place.Congratulations to all our medal winning riders, to Sam and Coen for their gold and silver in the five-year-olds, and to Niamh for her gold in the six-year-olds. People working and volunteering across the equestrian sector are being asked to complete a national survey exploring the challenges and opportunities those involved in the industry face.The survey will examine recruitment and retention, career progression, skills and training, inclusion, wellbeing and long-term workforce sustainability.Launched by British Equestrian and led by researchers at Hartpury University, the research also aims to address gaps in existing data about the equestrian workforce.This project is an important opportunity to build a clearer understanding of the people who underpin the equestrian sector, saidProfessor Jane Williams, Director of Research at Hartpury University.By combining our robust research expertise with meaningful engagement across one of our specialist industries, well create the evidence needed to inform future workforce development and help British Equestrian build a more sustainable and inclusive sector.First phase The national survey is the first phase of a wider research programme being delivered by Hartpury University on behalf of British Equestrian through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027. A new Coping with Confinement Toolkit has been launched to help equine veterinary professionals manage the behavioural and welfare challenges associated with periods of confinement, including box rest.The online toolkit, launched by the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) at the BEVA Congress, provides practical, evidence-based guidance to help vets and nurses support horses behavioural wellbeing alongside their physical recovery.Confinement, such as box rest or restricted grazing, may be essential for successful management, treatment or rehabilitation, but can be challenging for horses and owners alike in in its effect on behaviour, stress levels and overall welfare. The toolkit provides a structured approach to identifying and addressing these challenges.As our understanding of equine behavioural needs evolves, there is an opportunity to improve how we manage confinement to reduce stress, support recovery and ultimately improve patient welfare, said BEVA President Imogen Burrows, who led the development of the toolkit.Our Coping with Confinement Toolkit provides the practical information and guidance veterinary professionals need to make these potentially physically and mentally challenging situations more manageable and bearable for both horses and the people caring for them.The creation of the toolkit was supported by BEVA Council members Jenny Hindmarsh, Helen Bickerton and Marie Rippingale, and benefited from expert veterinary imput from Gemma Pearson, Cath Spedding and Ellis Girgis. He has a lot of blood, and you kind of have to sit there and just hold on.Todays course was a very good course. Obviously, the rain coming in had a bit of an effect, but I knew the footing would hold and the jump-off would be quick enough. Hes a very fast horse and very, very careful. Hes very fun to ride. Hell probably try Silo Ridge and Tryon for Major League (MLSJ) and try some of those team classes.
