ACommunity Interest Company in the Lake District has welcomed dozens of children to its equestrian centre this summer as part of the governmentsHoliday Activities and Food (HAF) programme.Harness Change, based at Bigland Hall in Haverthwaite, iscommitted to providing equestrian experiences and support for individuals of all abilitiesacross Cumbria.Its summer HAF programme sessions gave children from the local area the chance to learn about horse care while taking part inpractical activities, outdoor exercise and well-being sessions.The HAF programme provides healthy meals, enriching activities, and free childcare places to children from low-income families.Our sessions run for four hours each day on Mondays and Tuesdays and groups of children are able to get hands-on experience of pony care, grooming and stable management, said Jane Simon from Harness Change. We have about 15 children attending each day, many of whom have never been around horses and ponies before.By filling hay-nets, watching the farrier at work, helping make up the horse feeds and preparing home-made horse treats, they make the connection between caring for the horses and understanding their own well-being. Coyle and Swail join Cork athlete as winners at MLSJ TorontoShane Sweetnam is in the hottest form of his career since the dawn of 2026, and having excelled at the European Championships, returned to individual fare with another five-star Grand Prix success, this time in Canada on Saturday night.The World No 5 also combined with fellow Irishman, Daniel Coyle, and local hero Erynn Ballard to take out the first leg of the lucrative Major League Show Jumping team event at the MLSJ Toronto Show in Palgrave 24 hours earlier, Coyle coming up with the decisive contribution in the gold medal jump-off.Victory in the $500,000 Kubota Grand Prix with Coriaan Van Klapscheut Z (above), the horse he co-owns with Voquest, is the latest in a long line of strong performances by Sweetnam. It comes on the back of a good European Championships that could have been so much better with even a modicum of good fortune for him and the Patrick Connolly-bred Irish Sport Horse James Kann Cruz (Gizmo Partners).It also marked a Grand Prix double on the night for Irish athletes, as Conor Swail who agonisingly missed out on the jump-off for the five-star feature when fourth with one time fault on Casturano (Conall Murray) combined with Nadal Hero & DB (Mannon Farm) to win the two-star highlight.There were strong performance at the highest grade too by Mark McAuley and Denis Lynch as the Longines Global Champions Tour marked 20 years on home territory in Valkenswaard, The Netherlands.But not for the first time this year, it was Sweetnam proving the headline act. Equestrian retailer and insurance provider Harry Hall has launched a Horse Ownership Budget Calculator to help equestrians gain a clearer understanding of the costs involved in owning their horse. The budget calculator allows owners to input finances from livery and feed to veterinary and personal care costs, giving them a helpful estimate of what their horse costs daily, weekly, monthly and annually.Household costs are continuing to rise along with the cost of owning a horse, said Liz Hopper, CEO of Harry Hall.At Harry Hall, we understand that these costs can be daunting and in line with our mission to make horse ownership more affordable and accessible.
