The 10-year-old by Amiro Z was so poorly when he was born that he spent the first day of his life at Rossdales Equine Hospital in Newmarket.He wasnt a totally straightforward birth and I think, had we not been there I broke the bag maybe he wouldnt be with us, said Sarah. He was slightly dummy foal and did spend the first 24 hours in Rossdales. Then he woke up, and I went back the next day and there was a little foal frolicking around the field.Sarah competed Corimiros dam, Lilly Corinne, at five-star level and won individual bronze at the 2021 European Championships aboard Corouet, another home-bred out of the same mare.Theyve all got similarities and you think, oh my goodness, thats just like Lily, said Sarah. Funnily enough, they all sleep like her. Weve got pictures of Lily when she was a foal, and even the way she sleeps now, theyre all similar and look really cute with their knees tucked in.But theyve also got different traits. Veterinary service provider CVS Equine has revealed it is carrying out a research projectinvestigating the relative success of treatment options for Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD).Currently, there is limited understanding of the causes of EGGD and treatment responses can vary widely between individuals making it challenging to treat. Many horses undergo a trialanderror approach before the right management and medication combination is found.The aim of the study, which is being led by Ewan Macaulay, senior veterinary surgeon at Alnorthumbria Equine Vets and RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Equine Internal Medicine, is to address this evidence gap by evaluating the effectiveness of the range of treatment protocols currently used in firstopinion practice.Lack robust evidenceWere fortunate to have a growing awareness of equine glandular gastric disease, but we still lack robust evidence on which treatment strategies offer the best outcomes, said Ewan. By capturing detailed clinical data from naturally occurring cases across multiple practices, we aim to build a clearer picture of what works and why. Ultimately, our goal is to improve treatment success and welfare for affected horses.Whos eligibleAny horse over one year of age undergoing gastroscopy at select CVS Equine practices is eligible for inclusion.Vets are encouraged to perform an optional pre-gastroscopy clinical and orthopaedic assessment, including trotup, flexion tests, lunging, and palpation of the neck, back and hindquarters. The aim is to capture any musculoskeletal discomfort that could act as a stressor contributing to glandular ulceration.Gastroscopy is then performed as usual, with participating clinicians submitting videos or images alongside standardised record sheets. Horses are treated exactly as they would be during routine clinical care the choice of therapy remains entirely at the discretion of the attending veterinary surgeon, ensuring the study reflects genuine clinical decisionmaking across multiple practices.Followup examinations and repeat gastroscopy findings are captured at each reevaluation, typically around four weeks after initial diagnosis. Owners complete a short survey after each gastroscopy and a final followup survey three months after the last examination. For the first time in her career, Laura Collett called upon the services of a hunt horse to escort her to the dressage warm-up at the 2026 Mars Badminton Horse Trials today (8 May). Ive never been escorted up here before, but Ive seen other people do it and I thought, yeah, lets try that anything to make it safe, said Laura, who was riding Yvonne Fergusons home-bred mare, Bling.Shes just been so unsettled since Wednesday, so were just trying to do all that we can to keep her chilled and calm and it seemed to work, said Laura, who went on to explain what happened two days ago. I said to Tilly [Lauras travelling groom], that there arent many horses that scare me, but she does, because when she sees red, the red mist comes, and theres no thought process in what shes doing, and she just, she bolts. I was bolted with by Bling down the avenue on Wednesday luckily, no one was around, but when she goes, she properly goes. Then I had to come back past all the grassroots cross-country it was a pretty terrifying first day at Badminton for myself. So were just very happy we are here, and we survived, and were still going! Tricky, but feeling goodLaura and Bling put in a solid performance in the first phase to score 33.5 and sit in equal 27th going into tomorrows cross-country. She hates dressage and physically finds it difficult as well as mentally, explained Laura. Since just before Burghley, she started to think about maybe working with me and not 100% against me. Were definitely not fully there yet, but its a work in progress with her because shes tricky in her head as well, so everythings a bit of a mind game to be able to get her to work in a way that you would want her to.Laura said that Blings homework has been good, but going to a big event changes the game slightly. At home now, shes feeling really good, but its a whole different ball game when we go in an atmosphere and do a test like that. I was just very pleased that she didnt break in the counter canter because shes just about got her head around doing a flying change on a diagonal line, and then it was like, Oh, no, youve got to do medium and then stay counter counter, and then do a change, and shes being a bit like, eff you! Decide what you want, one or the other, not all three at once, but thats just a bit her mentality. If she allows herself to understand it, then shes fine, but shes not very good at giving herself that opportunity to listen. All things considered, I am very happy. Daisy Berkeley (nee Dick) is back at the Mars Badminton Horse Trials for the first time since 2010 with the sweetest, kindest, gentlest, loveliest person of a horse Diese Du Figuier, who is a 13-year-old Selle Francais gelding.The pair scored 32.9 for their dressage test on Friday morning to lie =23rd with Kylie Roddy and SRS Kan Do after the first phase. It was a really good start. I think I probably slightly under rode him in his changes, because theyre normally really spot on and beautiful and I think I was just a bit wet, which meant they werent as good as they could be, said Daisy. He did a little head toss in his walk and that just brought us down to a five in that. I dont know what the other marks were but weve got to clear around. Hes such a spooky horse in real life, I cant walk him. If the grounds wetter in one area, he cant go near it. If hes in an arena and someones harrowed it the floor is lava, so for him to go in there with all that going on, and not bat an eyelid, I couldnt be more proud of him.Fond memoriesDaisy is best known for her partnership with Spring Along with whom she represented Great Britain at numerous championships, including the 2008 Beijing Olympics. On Daisys last appearance at the Gloucestershire CCI5* in 2010, she finished on the podium with Spring Along.Last time I was here was on Spring Along and he finished third. The first phase of the MarsBadminton Horse Trialsis complete and it was an action-packed Friday (8 May) with the scoreboard undergoing a complete shuffle. The top 10 is an international affair with six nations represented. Here we take a look at which combinations hold those top 10 spots 1. Ros Canter and Lordships Graffalo Last years Badminton and Burghley winners, Ros Canter and Lordships Graffalo (pictured above), started as they mean to continue, posting an impressive first phase score of 23.7 this morning to sit some 4.4 penalties ahead of their nearest rival. Ros gave birth to her second child just three-and-a-half months ago and said it has been a funny few weeks to get here. 2. Tiana Coudray and Cancaras Girl The USAs Tiana Coudray and Cancaras Girl were the leaders after the first day of dressage, and they go into tomorrows cross-country on a strong score of 28.1. Tiana said after her test: To go into the lead at Badminton is a pipe dream; just to be at Badminton is a dream. I had a little tear putting her on the lorry for her third Badminton, thinking it was pretty darn special, seeing as she was only supposed to be a project we were going to sell on.Its the sort of stuff you dream of as a kid. 3. Lara De Liedekerke-Meier and Hooney DArvilleBelgiums Lara and her lovely home-bred mare Hooney were winners of the five-star at Luhmhlen in Germany in 2024, and they have put themselves into a great position going into the Saturday of Badminton, sitting in third on 28.6. They havent had the best preparation after an injury scare following a fall earlier this season, but Lara said of her PB today: If you do a PB at Badminton, thats the right place to do it. 4. Felix Vogg and Cartania Swiss rider Felix Vogg and his 2025 Maryland 5 Star winner, Cartania, were another pair to impress the dressage judges today, posting a 28.7 to sit in fourth. Im very happy it has been a disaster the past few days with her being nervous around the crowds, but somehow we always manage to get the job done, said Felix. 5. Caroline Powell and Greenacres Special Cavalier New Zealand rider Caroline Powell and her 2024 Badminton winner Greenacres Special Cavalier put in a great performance this afternoon to score 28.9 and sit in fifth after the first phase. Im very pleased she was such a good girl, said Caroline, who was just one of 10 to score a sub-30. 6. Marcio Carvalho Jorge and Royal Encounter British-based Brazilian rider Marcio put in a strong first phase performance to sit in sixth on 29.2 after a very correct test. Marcio, who is a qualified medical doctor and previously worked as an anaesthetist, commented on his horses relaxed nature after their test saying: Hes always had such a nice brain. Hes very cute and willsleepall day. Even today, before we tacked him up, he was lying down sleeping. He does this every day it doesnt matter if hes in competition or at home. Its so funny, but its good, because he rests his body and his legs. 7. Will Rawlin and Ballycoog Breaker Boy British rider Will Rawlin, who was second after the first day of dressage on 29.3, now sits in seventh going into the cross-country aboard Ballycoog Breaker Boy. Ive been absolutely over the moon with how hes been working over the past couple of days here, said Will. I really feel, even since Burghley last year, that weve stepped it up again and theres still so much more in there. Hes very sensitive and so I had to make sure that I relaxed and breathed so that it followed through to William. I would have been disappointed if we werent in the top three after today. 8. Wills Oakden and Keep It Cooley Wills and this lovely 11-year-old delivered a strong performance to score 29.4 and they sit in eighth after the dressage. We rate him highly we love him and hes still young, said Will. Hes inexperienced at this level, so this week is just about giving him mileage and exposure in this sort of atmosphere around this kind of track. There was one mistake in his left half-pass, which is annoying as thats usually one of his strongest movements, but other than that, were delighted with him.9. Bubby Upton and Cola Bubby Upton and Cola took the early lead on Thursday morning with a score of 29.8, but at the end of the first phase, they now sit in ninth. He was really good, but I would say he was on the on the edge, which is how hes been all year, to be honest, being a little too fresh, explained Bubby. But we managed to navigate our way through. I wouldnt say it was a perfect, polished test, but with him being more established at the level now, and him being such a beautiful horse, he has such kind of natural presence anyway. 10. Tim Price and Falco New Zealands Tim Price and Falco round off the top 10. They trotted up the centre line on Friday afternoon and posted a score of 29.9. Tim, who recently sustained a collarbone injury, said of Falco (who has very few teeth): I wanted a low, proper score that sounds a stupid, doesnt it? but he is capable, and he can really get a great test.It just takes a couple of mistakes, especially if theres a little bit of tension, but overall he was relaxed and had a soft, nice way of going. Tim Prices ride, the experienced 17-year-old Falco, has several teeth fewer than all the other horses in the Mars Badminton field, after the top ones were removed earlier this year due to disease and the bottom ones may need to be taken out too.He had to have all his top, front teeth removed at the start of the year. Its just a disease that sometimes strikes in older horses and he is a little bit older, hes 17 and the only solution was to remove his top teeth, confirmed Tim. He might have to have the bottom ones taken out sometime in the near future as well.Tim added that the horse is much happier, much more comfortable without the gnashers.He can still eat and do everything like a normal horse, he said. His tongue sometimes comes out and its quite cute. His tongue lolls out a bit, and he looks even more like a grandpa. He just needs some little round glasses and a pipe and hed be the full package.The German-bred gelding, who is co-owned by Tim and Sue Benson a former British team rider, Badminton runner-up (in 1979) and course-designer for the London Olympics is still able to eat hay and grass.It needs to be a bit longer now, because hes got to use his tongue and get it to the back of his mouth, but hes always been a good eater. Hes a bit of an overgrown pony anyway and foods never been a problem. Hes still happy.Collarbone injuryTim is recovering from a recent collarbone injury.Its just healing away in the background. Its bad timing really, just before a couple of five-stars [Tim also competed in Kentucky two weeks ago], when you hurt yourself properly.Its been a little bit mind over matter, but interestingly, the horse has been going well now that I cant pull as hard on the reins.Tim and Falco lie 10th after dressage on 29.9 penalties.I wanted a low, proper score that sounds a stupid, doesnt it? but he is capable, and he can really get a great test.It just takes a couple of mistakes, especially if theres a little bit of tension, but overall he was relaxed and had a soft, nice way of going.Tim and Falco won team and individual bronze medals at the 2022 world championships in Italy. They are a long-term partnership, having been together 10 years, and were sixth individually at the Paris Olympics.In 2024, Tim took the horse on the Sunshine Tour in Spain and they won a 1.20m showjumping class.Hes a bit of a fake event horse, because hes an amazing jumper, confessed Tim. Hes learned how to be a good cross-country horse, and I think this [Badminton] course should really suit him. She has been quite a lot to handle since we arrived, but my groom did a fantastic job until now and I think I made everyone proud, at least myself so thats the most important. So far, Im very happy.Weve been letting her graze about for hours, grazing, grazing, not let her think too much about it. She has not eaten too much yet. Think she lost quite some weight. Obviously you want her to be on a top form tomorrow. Shes 13 years old, and she has nothing to learn now so it was just about keeping her happy.Injury scareLara and the 13-year-old homebred mare, who won Luhmuhlen CCI5* together in 2024, nearly didnt make it to Badminton after a fall hampered their build up.She was in the stable for 10 days because we thought it was a fracture, but it ended up not being anything. I was not sure I was going to come here and now Im here. Its such an accomplishment to be here. Just riding in there and having nothing to lose really. I think Im just finally enjoying my time being at Badminton and not being so stressed all the time, said Lara.Im looking forward to the challengeLara, who finished 14th here with Hooney DArville last year, is looking forward to the cross-country tomorrow.I like the flow. I think the going is fast which we have to handle in a way that we shouldnt go too fast from the beginning and empty the tank. I think we all have to ride all our horses, said Lara. Emily King said she is feeling absolutely normal now after a difficult start to the year which saw her fracture a rib and tear a lung.The British event rider, who is competing at the Mars Badminton Horse Trials this week with Valmy Biats, incurred the injuries when she fell in the showjumping warm-up at Thoresby in April.Im feeling absolutely normal now, thank God. It hasnt been the smoothest start to the year. Ive had a few little hiccups along the way, but feeling good, feeling strong, healed up, so it shouldnt hold me back tomorrow, said Emily.Balancing actEmily piloted Valmy Biats, with whom she was fifth at Badminton last year and fourth the year before, to a first phase score of 30.3.He always goes a little bit anxious with the crowds in there so its always a balance of keeping him relaxed but still showing him off enough, explained Emily.In the past Ive really shown him off and then had some bigger mistakes, and then gone a bit underpowered and had a little bit of a lower score so I was trying to get that balance with him.Today, he did feel really good. In the general work he felt amazing. He always finds his walk hard. He just wants to just get in gallop I say you can in a minute, but youve just got to work for a little bit longer first but no, generally, Im really pleased.Sams double dutyA different dynamic at Badminton this year for Emily is that her partner, Sam Ecroyd, is also competing. Sam is riding the 11-year-old, 18hh, Boleybawn Lecrae who is known at home as Patrick.Sammy always comes to the big ones and helps me with everything, but especially the cross country so hes got his work cut out [tomorrow]. He has to train me and then do his own thing, which might I say, Sam, I take priority, joked Emily.Well walk it [the cross-country course] lots. Well walk it as many times as we can and speak through the course with as many riders and trainers as possible, just to get their take on it. Sammy goes out pretty early on tomorrow so he can give it a good suss out. But they are very different horses. His horse is huge, but has got a quite a small, very quick stride. Mines small, but hes got a massive, a little bit of a slower stride. As if preparing for Mars Badminton Horse Trials isnt enough, Cassie Sanger also had to make sure she had submitted all her university work before leaving for the Gloucestershire CCI5*.The American rider, who is based with Ros Canter, juggles eventing in the UK with being a full-time journalism student at the University of Richmond in Virginia, USA.I actually just submitted all my finals on Monday night before I got here. I was really needing to get them done before I came here, I was like, I probably shouldnt be focusing on too many things, explained Cassie who is contesting Badminton this week with Redfield Fyre, a 13-year-old KWPN gelding.I have one more year left at the University of Richmond, so Ill be a senior next year, and Im really looking forward to getting that done.I couldnt give up the opportunityWhen I first came over to Ros, I got the Wilton Fair Grant, so thats what enabled me to come over, and then I was really supposed to leave last December. Richmond does a study abroad program so last fall, or autumn, I was doing Study Abroad online, which allowed me to be over here and then I just could not give up this opportunity with Ros, continued Cassie.She wanted me to stay, and I wanted to stay, and so weve made it work, and shes helped me then be able to travel back and forth to school. My parents are my biggest supporters, and they did not make me go to junior college. It was a choice I made because you need a rounded life in this sport, Everyone knows the highs and lows are daily, you can have a great day one day and the next will be awful.My friends and my support crew at school just keep me grounded and give me different perspectives.DebutanteCassie is making her Badminton debut this week and will be hoping to recreate the form that saw her and Redfield Fyre finish 17th at Burghley last year. The pair received a score of 37.5 for their dressage test.Im thrilled with him.
