Karen ONeal and Clooney 14 Take Inaugural Aspen Farms CCI4*-S Win
Karen ONeal and Clooney 14. Photo by Ashley Kemp Photography. At the end of an exciting weekend at Aspen Farms Horse Trials in Yelm, WA, Karen ONeal and Clooney 14 (pictured above), a 10-year-old Westphalian gelding owned by Annika Asling, sealed the win in the inaugural CCI4*-Short. They started the division in the lead with a dressage score of 35, but then dropped to second after show jumping on Saturday due to one rail. On Sunday they delivered a clean cross-country jumping effort with just 1.2 time faults to overtake Marc Grandia and Campari FFF, owned by Team Rebecca LLC, who had jumping faults on the track designed by Morgan Rowsell. He was calm in the cross-country warmup; super chill, said ONeal. Then he came out of the start box like a dragon. He felt like he was part of me. He did everything I asked him to do out there. It felt great! He just had 3 seconds over the time. For a winding course on grass, and for it raining yesterday, Im super proud of him. He ended strong. The course was set well and rode beautifully. It was one of the most fun courses Ive ever ridden.ONeal and Clooney, who reside in North Bend, Washington, won their first Advanced at Aspen Farms last September, and they competed at the 4* level in California earlier this season. Annika Asling, Clooneys owner, has been supporting them throughout their rise to the Advanced level.I never thought a 4-star could look easy until he started doing it, said Asling. Now that were seeing what he can do, its cool having bigger hopes and dreams. We knew he could do it, but were also in shock that it happened. Its a team affair, and this is a team win for sure. Karen has been working hard to get cued in at this level to make it happen. Watching her over the years have very nice horses but not quite get to her dreams; this is so rewarding to see her be so successful, and be the rider we all know she can be. It came together really well today.ONeal and Asling found Clooney as an unstarted 3-year-old and purchased him from a free-jump video. They started him together, taking turns with the ride. After having children, Asling offered the ride to Karen so she could pursue her upper level eventing dreams.Hes been a dream come true for all of us, said Asling. Hes such a sweet horse to have around. My mom helps take care of him; our kids hang out with himhes a good boy through and through. He tries his heart out. He loves Karen, loves us, and we love him. Hes been amazing.ONeal was not the only competitor to move up after cross-country in the CCI4*-S. Sophie Click and her 13-year-old Holsteiner gelding, Quidproquo, jumped clear cross-country with time added to claim second.Marc Grandia and Campari FFF had two run-outs on course, dropping from the overnight lead to third in the CCI4*-S.Hes such an aggressive cross-country horse, said Grandia after his ride. It kind of caught us out today. Hes got a lot of jumps left in him, and I just need to figure out where thats going to be next.Marc Grandia and GHS Calexico, owned by The Calexico Syndicate, winners of the CCI3*-Short at Aspen Farms. Photo by Ashley Kemp Photography. While CCI4*-S success was elusive, Marc Grandia did have winning rides in other divisions this weekend. He won Open Novice with Obligado VD Watermolen, a 5-year-old imported gelding owned by Melissa Jaten. He didnt do any competitions last year, shared Grandia. He did one Beginner Novice this spring at Twin Rivers, and this is first Novice. Hes a super horse; hes growing up. He was good this weekend and surprisingly focused. Sometimes hes bothered by the atmosphere; he wasnt at all this weekend.Marc Grandia and GHS Calexico, owned by Calexico Syndicate LLC, took the title in the competitive CCI3*-Short, which consisted of 14 competitors from USEA Area VII, California, and Canada. The CCI3*-S competition was a crowd-favorite as it proved to be a race against partners. Marcs spouse Erin Grandia and her mare Hyacinth led the division after show jumping and led the way around the cross-country track, with Marc and GHS Calexico quite literally following behind as the next horse out of the start box. Ultimately, thanks to a slightly faster cross-country ride, Marc was able to overtake Erin by .2 penalties to claim the win.Oh That was fun! said Marc. .2 you cant get much closer than that! Erin had a great run; she got to go really fast and so did I. It was fun to meet at the finish line. She was waiting there for me and we watched the scores come in. I just barely eked in front of her. My mare was really good. Weve been working on going fast and keeping her focused, and thats what she did today. It was wonderful. I went back and forth on doing the 4* with her here, but I ultimately decided I wanted to put three good phases together because Ive never actually done that with her Sometimes we have a tense dressage and good jumping. This weekend all three phases came together. So now we move on; well do another 4*-Short at Rebecca Farm. Its Fathers Day, so I had to let Marc have that, joked Erin after her second place finish in the CCI3*-S. But .2 behind himone stride I could have left out and had it! But its ok; Hyacinth was great. It was a lot of fun. I felt like I could go a little bit faster. I wanted less than 5 time, and I got it. Im really happy with that.Erin and Hyacinth will do the CCI3*-S at Rebecca Farm in July, and they are aiming for the CCI3*-L at Maryland in the fall.Erin had another successful ride this weekend finishing first on her dressage score in Open Training with Riptide Rio, an Irish Sporthorse gelding she is schooling for Adriane Jimenez. Erin reflected, he was quite good this weekend. Hes not the biggest or fanciest horse, but hes very consistent. He was great to ride.Todd Trewin and Cooley High Society, owned by Tracey Trewin, winners of the CCI2*-Short. Photo by Ashley Kemp Photography. The CCI2*-Short division was the largest FEI division this weekend with 19 starters. In the end, clean and consistent riding paid off for Todd Trewin, who moved up from fourth to first aboard his wife Traceys horse, Cooley High Society. This was Trewins first return to an FEI division in 30 years, and the 1992 Olympian showcased his years of experience making the questions set forth by show jump designer Chris Barnard and cross-country designer Morgan Rowsell look easy.It rode great, said Trewin after cross-country. Im so glad the footing held up. I was worried after the rain yesterday hoping the ground would keep drying out, and it did. The crew does an amazing job with the footing here. Cooley High Society ran well for his first 2*. What a Fathers Day present to me!Hailey Blackburn and Baral Villester, winners of Open Intermediate. Photo by Ashley Kemp Photography.Open Intermediate featured a repeat winner: Hailey Blackburn of Santa Rosa, CA. She won the Intermediate at Aspen Farms in June 2023 with Kilybunny Amigo, and she won the division this weekend with her newest partner, Baral Villester, an 8-year-old sporthorse gelding from Argentina whom she has only had since this January. He has been absolutely incredible, said Blackburn. Every question we ask of him he rises to the occasion. The cross-country course was so fun. It was very different from the courses Ive ridden here in the past. Im from Area VII originally, so Ive been around here for quite a while. The open oxer in the back field gave the best feel, and the coffin walked tricky but he absolutely demolished it. He loves his job; he made it all so exciting. Id like to thank my team at Chocolate Horse, and Andrea Pfieffer and Tommy Greengard for finding this horse for me. Im grateful for the endless support from my crew and familymy Dad is here on Fathers Day taking out my studs! The pair is next headed to tackle their first 3*-Short at Rebecca Farms in July.Sara Sellmer and JB Virgin Electric, owned by Jil Walton, winners in Open Preliminary. Photo by Ashley Kemp Photography. In Open Preliminary, Sara Sellmer from British Columbia, Canada and JB Virgin Electric, owned and bred by Jil Walton, went double clear cross-country to win the division on 25.6.She keeps rising to the occasion, said Sellmer after her win. She has the heart of a lion. She just rocked it today on cross-country. She got a 21 in dressagethat was awesome. But the highlight today was making time. It felt easy. She was full of jump and run. Shes not a big horse, but she has a huge heart. Im grateful for her. And having someone like Jil behind me is invigorating and exciting.Sellmer and JB Virgin Electric are entered in Preliminary at Rebecca Farm, and then hope to ride in the CCI2*-S at Galway.Tommy Greengard of California and Im All In finished second in Open Preliminary. They were standouts on Friday for scoring the lowest dressage score of the day: 13.4. Emily Schmitz and Fernhill Blueprint finished third in the division.Madison Langerak and Normandy Kivalo, winners of Preliminary Rider. Photo by Ashley Kemp Photography. In Preliminary Rider, Madison Langerak and Normandy Kivalo led the field of eleven from start to finish, adding just 1.2 time faults to their dressage score. Reese Blinks and IM Jaguar finished second, and Bailie Corless and Casualleigh finished third. The highlight of the weekend was the feel he gave me today on cross-country, said Langerak. The first three jumps I was not on my A-game. I needed to shape up for the rest of the course. He was on it from then on. 10AB with the first skinny chevron was his first moment of pause. He really listened to me when I told him he had to jump it. This was a test for me to practice setting him up less I have a tendency to slow him down for things. This weekend I wanted to let him grow up more by not carrying him through it so much. We had a lot less time on cross-country than we usually have because of that. It was a really great feeling.Langeraks show schedule is limited by her commitments to nursing school, but shes hoping she and Norman can make it to the American Eventing Championships later this year.Aspen Farms has prided itself on elevating the sport of eventing in the Pacific Northwest ever since they ran their first horse trials in 2007. Adding a CCI4*-Short was another milestone for the venue, Jonathan Elliott the show organizer, and for USEA Area VII. The 4-star Reception on Saturday attracted one of the largest crowds in Aspen Farms history.Max Corcoran, a prior United States Eventing Association President, was in attendance from the East Coast. Like many who came from near or far, Corcoran enjoyed celebrating the inaugural CCI4*-S in Washington State at Aspen Farms. View this post on InstagramA post shared by Aspen Farms Horse Trials (@aspenfarmshorsetrials) Theres so much that stands out to me here at Aspen Farms, said Corcoran. Its an incredible venue. Its such a special community of peoplenot only riders and competitors, but the staff and crew that come and run this competition. They run it like a top notch competition. Theres nothing that anyone wants or needs, because all your needs are met here. Its fantastic footing. The cross-country course is stunning. Its a hidden gem. Its far away, but its well worth the travel.A key element that makes Aspen Farms shine is their relationship with supportive sponsors such as Gallops Saddlery, Toklat, Enchanting Homes & Farms, Arion, and many others. Together the show sponsors contributed over $32,000 worth of prizes for the top finishers. An example of the unique prize offerings at Aspen Farms is the The Arion Challenge, sponsored by Arion. One Amateur/Rider competitor who wins their Amateur/Rider division on the same horse at Aspen Farms in both June and September can win a custom Arion jump or dressage saddle.Congratulations to all the winners this weekend, said Stacy Von Marenholtz of Arion after the final results from Amateur/Rider divisions were released. Were super excited to see you come back to Aspen Farms in September to have a chance to win a custom Arion saddle! The next Horse Trials (including the Tin Men Supply Advanced division) and Area VII Championships (Beginner Novice, Novice, Training, Preliminary, and Intermediate) at Aspen Farms will run September 13-15, 2024.

Research paints worrying picture for owners due to cost of living crisis
A new national survey has revealed a worrying picture for horse owners due to cost of living crisis and the impacts of climate change. The National Equine Welfare Council has released the results from its latest cost of living survey, where more than 6,000 owners from across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland responded.Eighty one percent said they were concerned about the continued pressure of increased costs, and 39% said the crisis had had a medium or high impact on their ability to keep their horse and that they had had to make additional sacrifices just to provide basic care. 80% reported an increase in vets fees, farrier services (65%) and insurance providers (62%) and 20% had taken on another job or increased their hours to help pay for their horses care.A small but significant number of owners (2%) also said they were considering relinquishing their horse to a charity due to the pressure of increased costs and 5% were considering euthanasia of their equine.I cant afford to call vets out of hours anymore, one anonymous respondent said. I rent a field and cant afford a proper horse shelter or stables. I cant afford the farrier regularly anymore. Another said: Everything increased resulting in it becoming impossible to continue to keep my horse in work, so shes now been retired to a field. A third respondent said they had had to go without food to feed their horse every month.Several highlighted that despite the pressures of increasing costs the value of horses to their mental health meant they werent prepared to give them up.I have less money than ever, I didnt know I wouldnt be able to work when I got my horse, now Im going without food/ heating/ diesel to provide for him, they said. I have a life limiting illness which has brought on pretty severe mental health problems, as well as dire financial stresses. If I didnt have him, Id have no reason to live but I cant afford him.For the first time this year, respondents in the free text sections also highlighted their concerns about climate change, the altering seasons, the impact of the bad weather over the winter on their grazing, and the resulting turnout challenges. We know from last years research that many owners were just about coping, all possible cost savings had already been made, so they really were feeling the pressure, said Rebecca Boulert, Education Officer at World Horse Welfare, the equine charity coordinating this years survey. This years survey shows that these problems are just not going away. Owners main concerns for the coming year are how they are going to afford even essential items like vet costs, emergency care, feed and forage. For us as welfare organisations, it makes for very concerning reading, and of course as charities we are also facing increased costs and reducing donations. Its a worrying picture.Despite this, there were some positive horse welfare outcomes reported, including horses being turned out for longer or full time which can be beneficial for both their physical and mental health, owners opting for testing-led worm control methods which are effective in tackling anthelmintic resistance in the equine parasite population, and many were using a forage-based, low concentrate feed which can satisfy their horses physiological and behavioural needs. The 2024 survey was developed by members of the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) including World Horse Welfare, Redwings, Blue Cross, The British Horse Society, Bransby Horses and Oak Tree Animals Charity.A tailored version of the survey targeting charities and other equestrian rescue centres was run concurrently to find out how the continuing cost of living crisis is affecting these types of organisations. It revealed a rise in operating costs against a fall in donations, with more welfare enquiries pointing at an increasing number of horses that will require their care. The results of both surveys will be shared with the UK Government, Devolved Administrations, and local authorities to help inform their understanding of the situation as well as policy decisions, including potential financial support to those most in need.Further readingBuying horse feed: its not cheap, but these tips will save you moneyHow to choose the best horse bedding plus money-saving tipsEquine Carbon Calculator launched to inspire environmental actionThe post Research paints worrying picture for owners due to cost of living crisis appeared first on Your Horse.

How to Show in Halter Classes
If youd like to truly show off your horse at a horse show, you cant do much better than to enter him in a halter class. This ground-based class might appear a bit like showmanship at first, but unlike that class, halter judging is all about the horse. While the handlers role is still to make his horse look as good as possible, the handlers performance isnt judged the same way it is in showmanship.Quarter Horses and other stock breeds are usually shown in western-type show halters and handlers dress in western clothes.Like horse shows in general, halter classes can range from small-scale classes at low-level shows, where multiple breeds of a certain type may show against in each other in a catch-all class like English Type or Western Type, to breed-specific classes at larger shows. So what exactly is the judge looking for in a halter class? In general, good basic conformationoverall balance, correct legs, strong hindquarters, et ceteraand movement. In breed-specific situations, the judge is comparing your horse to the breed associations official breed type description; in some cases very minute details (size of the eyes, for example) will be considered. Many halter classes can be broken into two phases. One is the inspection phase, in which the judge examines one horse at a time and analyzes conformation and type while checking for any disqualifications. Each horse is also judged at the walk and trot in order for the judge to evaluate movement and way of going. The second phase involves returning to the line up, where each horse and handler wait while the other competitors are inspected. Arabians and half-Arabians are typically shown in a specialized Arabian show halter.Different horse shows and classes will have different pattern requirements for halter classes. Some might want you to walk in for inspection and then trot away, some might require that all competitors come in trotting and then line up along the rail before inspection. Read and understand any posted patterns, watch any classes that are before yours, and listen carefully to instructions from the ringmaster or announcer. Learn the specifics on how to show your breed or type. Some breeds, like Arabians, for instance, are shown in breed-specific tack and are positioned in a special way when standing in the ring. Some breeds are expected to be groomed differently than others (braiding, etc) Find out whats typical for your horses breed. Also, find out what you are expected to wearit too can vary from breed to breed.Snaffle bridles are frequently used in halter or in-hand classes designated as English or sport horse, but always check the rules when in doubt.Like all horse show classes, grooming is important, but it is particularly important for halter. While the judge isnt necessarily judging your horses grooming, if all things are equal and two horses are both excellent examples, the one with the better grooming job just might edge out the other. Give yourself enough time before the class to bathe, groom, polish hooves, braid, or whatever is required. Remember, you and your horse are being judged during the entire halter class! Dont stop showing just because youre in the lineup of a very large class and other horses are being inspected.Do you enjoy showing your horse in halter classes? Do you at compete at breed shows, or open shows? Let us know in the comments below. This article about showing horses in halter classes originally appeared in Horse Illustratedmagazine.Click here to subscribe! The post How to Show in Halter Classes appeared first on Horse Illustrated Magazine.

Therapy horse blankets and rugs: tried and tested to find which really work
With the health and wellbeing of a horse always at the forefront of your mind, a growing number of horse owners are turning to therapy rugs and blankets to help combat annoying little niggles and stiffness that comes with hard work and advancing years. There is a growing selection of therapy horse rugs and blankets available, some made from technical materials that claim to boost circulation, or you can opt for magnetic therapy to aid muscle health and suppleness. Can a horse rug really have such a big impact on their wellbeing? There is only one way to find out by using it! Your Horses testing team has put six different therapy blankets to the test over several months to find out how effective they really are. Each rug has been tested for how well it fits, performance (whether the tester noticed any changes in their horses way of going after using the rug) and value for money. Finally, each of our testers say whether they would recommend the therapy blanket to other horse owners.Therapy rugs: whats the research? Before we get into the test, its important to talk about what research, if any, there is into therapy horse blankets. They tend to come with quite a hefty price tag, and so its important to know what youre buying into when you click the buy button. Therapy horse blankets promise many benefits, including aiding blood circulation, easing tension and supporting recovery. In fact, some of the claims are quite extraordinary. The amount of research varies from rug to rug and some have none at all. We havent looked into this as part of our testing process, so if this is important to you, do your research before you buy. Many horse owners are convinced that a therapy blanket plays a role in keeping their horse comfortable, but this is anecdotal. There are many who dont believe they make any difference. I personally swear by my Protechmasta Therapy Cooler, particularly when its cold. My ex-racehorse who is well into his teens is noticeably more comfortable when I first get on after he has been wearing it. I also find that wearing Equilibrium Magnetic Chaps help prevent filled legs and stiffness. Do I believe these items are going to prevent him being injured or help him heal from a catastrophic injury? No. Common sense needs to be applied, and finding what works (and what doesnt) in terms of therapy blankets for your horse is key.The Your Horse test: therapy rugs and blanketsProtechmasta Therapy CoolerThe Protechmasta Therapy Cooler Rug has a natural ceramic-infused lining that emits a safe form of Far Infrared radiation, also known as Biogenetic Radiation, to the horses body. It is then reflected back from the body, creating a natural black body effect. According to Harry Hall, this natural process is scientifically-proven to gently and safely assist blood circulation, helping to reduce any swelling, ease muscle tension and support recovery and help in the prevention of injury. Is it a good fit? This therapy rug is true to size and deep, giving my horse good coverage. It is cut higher over the withers compared to other rugs which means it sits up the horses neck a little, making it flexible for different shapes of horse. It fits both my Thoroughbred and my Warmblood well and, crucially, there is no pressure on the withers. This therapy blanket didnt slip when either of my horses were wearing it and the fastenings offer lots of adjustment for a good fit. 5 starsDoes it do the job? This is a smart therapy rug that I have used while travelling my horses and at competitions. It has been an effective cooler, wicking away moisture to leave my horse dry. Ive used it in all weathers for travelling and it has been great at regulating body temperature. Ive noticed a difference when my horse wears it, especially pre-work and when travelling. He arrives at an event more relaxed and also more supple at the start of his warm-up. He tends to take longer than most to warm up and start moving freely, but wearing this rug definitely reduces that time. 4.5 starsValue for money?Generally speaking, it is expensive to buy a horse therapy blanket. However, I think this is a competitive price for such a versatile rug. It has so many uses and works well as a cooler and therapy rug. 4.5 starsRRP 169 (sale price 74.95)Buying in the UK? Purchase hereEquilibrium Products Magnetic RugEquilibrium states that this rug is made from a poly-cotton twill and is breathable and soft, yet super strong. It has an anti-rub lining across the chest, shoulder and neck. A hook and loop inner lining makes attaching or moving magnets super easy and allows you to target all areas of the horse.Does it fit well? This rug is my horses usual size and it fits her well. The soft cotton material is lightweight and it follows the contours of her body. All the fastenings are good quality and easily adjustable. Theres also a removable neck cover that can be quickly attached to the rug if required. Ive found that this therapy blanket doesnt slip even when worn by my horse overnight. 5 starsDoes it do the job?One of the best things about this rug is that you can move the VITAflex magnets, which enables you to target specific areas of the horses body. There are six magnets included and these stick to the rug lining and stay securely in pace. My horse wears this rug overnight in her stable and also for travelling. Historically, she comes off the horsebox a little stiff, but Ive found that since using the Equilibrium Magnetic Rug this has reduced. My mare also seems a little more relaxed about life. I also like that you can add the neck cover and use magnets in this area too. 4.5 starsValue for money? This rug is an investment as its a high price tag, but Im impressed by the results Ive seen so it is worth the spend. 4 starsRRP 195 (US$214.50)Buying in the UK? Purchase hereBuying in the USA? Purchase hereBucas Therapy CoolerAccording to Bucas, the Recuptex therapy material in this rug is made from a fine, stainless steel mesh to reflect the magnetic fields created inside the horses body. This is said to stimulate blood circulation and oxygen flow, possibly aiding healing and reducing both swelling and inflammation. This therapy cooler can be worn all the time if necessary as it is not a magnetic rug, however Bucas advises you slowly increase and monitor its use, especially at first. It features a stay-dry lining that helps wick away moisture, so it can also be used after washing down. There are attachment points at the neck and rear D-rings, so the rug can be used and secured under another Bucas rug.How does it fit? This therapy rug is a great fit and true to size for my horse. The magnet fastening at the chest is a great idea and makes doing up the rug quick and effortless. 4.5 starsDoes it do the job?Ive mainly used this rug for travelling to shows to help warm up my mares muscles and then as an aid for recovery afterwards. My horse appears calmer when she wears this rug, which really helps me with my nerves as its one less thing to worry about, and it also means that I can get on with our warm-up. I didnt find that it performs as well as a cooler, but it didnt cause my mare to sweat, although the stay-dry lining doesnt always dry her off effectively. 3starsValue for money?I would definitely recommend this rug. Ive seen a positive difference in my horse when she wears it. 4.5 starsRRP 198 (US$322.95)Buying in the UK? Purchase hereBuying in the USA? Purchase hereLe Mieux Conductive Magno RugLe Mieux states that the inner liner of this rug contains a woven layer of steel fibres which conduct magnetic waves evenly around the lining, bringing the whole of the horses upper body within the magnetic field. The breathable 3D mesh top side releases any heat build-up, while the lightweight mesh of the lower section encourages airflow.Does it fit? This rug fits well and is a good depth. The fastenings are quick and easy to use, while the three belly straps ensure that the rug fits closely, which is necessary for maximum effect from the magnets. It takes a couple of uses for the rug to mould to the horses shape. The lining does rustle. One of my horses wasnt too sure at first, but once fastened he relaxed. 4.5 starsDoes it do the job? This rug has inner liners that contain a woven layer of steel fibres directly under powerful 2600 gauss twin magnets which are placed over the shoulder, elbow, hip, stifle and second thigh. There are also additional magnets along the spine. My horse wears this rug for travelling to competitions and for lessons. He travels well when wearing it and comes off the lorry looking relaxed. After a hard jumping lesson, or when weve been eventing, he seems to recover quickly while wearing it and he doesnt seem so stiff the following day. The only downside, despite the material being breathable, is that he gets a little warm while wearing it. 4.5 starsValue for money? This is not a cheap rug, and unaffordable for many. However, I did feel that my horse benefits from wearing it. 4 starsRRP 299.95 (US$479.95)Buying in the UK? Purchase hereBuying in the USA? Purchase hereWeatherbeeta Therapy-Tec Fleece Standard NeckAccording to Weatherbeeta, this rug includes ceramic fabric technology to reflect the horses own body heat. It is said to assist in recovery after exercise by reducing lactic acid build up. It is a versatile, breathable and wickable fleece cooler with ceramic lining over the horses shoulders, back and quarters for targeted therapy.Does it fit?I have been using this rug in my horses usual size and it has proved to be a great fit. The fleece material isnt very stretchy which helps it to keep its shape. Ive had no problems with it slipping, even when worn by horse for longer periods. 5 starsDoes it do the job? This is a very smart rug and I like using it for travelling. It seems to regulate my horses temperature really well. How effective it is as a therapy rug is a little difficult to judge. The manufacturer states that the ceramic fibre technology helps to prepare the muscles for exercise and assists in recovery. I cant say I noticed a huge difference in my horses way of going, but Im not sure that youre meant to? Using a rug like this is more for peace of mind that youre doing something for your horses all-round wellbeing and comfort. 4 starsValue for money?I think this a good price for a smart rug, especially if it helps the horse feel more comfortable before and after exercise. 4 starsRRP 94.99 (US$149.95)Buying in the UK? Purchase hereBuying in the USA? Purchase hereFelix Bhler Walker Rug Ceramic RehabAccording to Kramer, this is a therapeutic, waterproof and windproof rug with integrated ceramic fibre in the inner fleece material, which is thought to reflect body heat and promotes blood circulation. It is said to promote relaxation and rehabilitation, and is ideally suited for using on the horse walker, lunging a horse or leading them out in hand. walks or lungeing. It offers a wide range of movement thanks to the cut-out area at the front.Does it fit? This rug fits well and the cross surcingles have plenty of adjustment to ensure that it stays in place. It is cut out in front of the shoulders to allow complete freedom of movement while it still covers the horses back to keep them warm. 4.5 starsDoes it do the job? This is a versatile rug that can be used during lunging, in-hand work, or if your horse is on a walker. Ive used it on both my horses and it has kept them dry (the outer material is waterproof) and warm. It features integrated ceramic fibres in the fleece lining, which reflect body heat and promote blood circulation, helping to aid relaxation and rehabilitation. Magnetic therapy for horses: does it work?
The topic of magnetic therapy for horses, which includes gear such as blankets, rugs and leg wraps, is a tricky one. There isnt a huge amount of research behind it and much of what we think we know is anecdotal that is, based on personal experience and opinions rather than science. However, magnetic therapy has been used for thousands of years on humans and animals, and it is widely thought that it could be beneficial for horses, too. With the advent of modern materials, and the availability of strong magnets in smaller sizes, the number of magnetic products available to use on your horse is growing. Magnets can be easily integrated into horse rugs and blankets, as well as boots and other products. There are plenty of items for riders to wear, too. What is magnetic therapy?Magnetic therapy is natural and non-invasive. However, its important to note that the magnets themselves dont heal. Rather, they are thought to help support the right environment for the body human, equine or otherwise to heal itself. Magnets are believed to do this by supporting increased blood flow to the areas they are covering. The blood flow brings increased oxygen levels, helps remove waste products and aids reduction in inflammation. Why is magnetic therapy used?Magnetic therapy is used for a range of conditions, including the management of stiff joints and muscles, recovery after strenuous work and also for general relaxation. It is thought that magnetic therapy may help to increase the rate of healing when treating inflammation, swelling and the symptoms of arthritis. With this in mind, it is thought to be possible that magnetic therapy may also a play part in the recovery process after a horse has suffered an injury or a chronic condition. Remember, magnets themselves do not heal (see previous paragraph), but many riders report that using a magnetic horse blanket for example is a good accompaniment to the recovery process.Magnets are now integrated into a range of horsey products and each will contain a number of magnets that are positioned over key areas of the body. These make using magnetic therapy as part of your horses daily routine bothe quick and easy. How does magnetic therapy work? When you use a magnetic rug or boots on your horse, the idea is that a magnetic field is generated by the magnets when it comes into contact with your horses body. This magnetic field penetrates through your horses muscle and soft tissue, and cellular activity is increased. It is thought that this assists and increases the bodys natural healing process and helps to speed up recovery by increasing the rate at which cells regenerate and repair. However, there is very little scientific evidence on exactly how magnets work to back up these claims. Beware very big claims that sound too good to be true, and if the product is said to have been created off the back of research, read it first. As I have already mentioned, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that magnetic therapy can be helpful, and there are many horse owners including myself who have seen the benefits of using magnetic therapy on their horses. How strong is a magnet? There are many different types of magnets available, and the strength of the magnet depends on its size and type. The strength of a magnet is often referred to in gauss. This is a measurement of surface strength of the magnet, which means it is what makes it stick to a metal surface. This surface measurement isnt necessarily the level of therapeutic effect the product will have on your horse; its the magnetic field strength away from the surface that tells you how deep it penetrates the bodys tissuesBenefits of magnetic therapy for horsesMagnetic therapy can easily be incorporated into your horses daily routine. It is thought to play a role in:Helping warm muscles up before and after workRelieving tension and aid relaxationEasing general stiffnessReducing swellingBoosting general well-beingSupporting the body to healWhile magnetic therapy may have a place in the daily care of your horse, there is one golden rule: you should always seek the advice of a qualified vet in the event that your horse is unwell or unsound. Magnetic therapy is not a replacement for medical care.Shop for magnetic therapy productsFrom boots to massage pads, rugs and blankets, there is a big market of magnetic therapy horse products for you to explore.
