When combined with neighboring Dallas, the Metroplex is the fourth most populous in the USA and the largest in Texas.Fort Worth was a stop on the historic Chisholm Trail, a cattle drive and wagon route from south Texas up to Kansas where the cattle were sold and loaded onto rail cars to ship east. Eventually many meat packing companies established facilities in Fort Worth. With ranching, cattle drives and meat packing being big business there, the city earned its Cowtown moniker. 4 Colorado Horses Test Positive for EIA
Four horses in Adams County, Colorado, have tested positive for equine infectious anemia (EIA).The index horse was a 5-year-old Quarter Horse mare used for racing. She tested positive on Dec. 23 and was euthanized.Since then, a 5-year-old Quarter Horse mare and a 4-year-old Quarter Horse gelding tested positive and were euthanized. Another 4-year-old Quarter Horse gelding tested positive but has not yet been euthanized.Fourteen horses have been exposed.EDCC Health Watch is an Equine Network marketing program that utilizes information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to create and disseminate verified equine disease reports. TheEDCCis an independent nonprofit organization that is supported by industry donations in order to provide open access to infectious disease information.About EIAEquine infectious anemiais a viral disease that attacks horses immune systems. The virus is transmitted through the exchange of body fluids from an infected to an uninfected animal, often by blood-feeding insects such as horseflies. It can also be transmitted through the use of blood-contaminated instruments or needles.ACoggins test screens horses blood for antibodiesthat are indicative of the presence of the EIA virus. Most U.S. states require horses to have proof of a negative Coggins test to travel across state lines.Once an animal is infected with EIA, it is infected for life and can be a reservoir for the spread of disease. Not all horses show signs of disease, but those that do can exhibit:Progressive body condition loss;Muscle weakness;Poor stamina;Fever;Depression; andAnemia.EIA has no vaccine and no cure. A horse diagnosed with the disease dies, is euthanized, or must be placed under extremely strict quarantine conditions (at least 200 yards away from unaffected equids) for the rest of his life.

2 Ohio Horses Test Positive for EHV-1
Two horses in Geauga County, Ohio, recently tested positive for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1). The two cases are not epidemiologically linked. The first horse was a 13-year-old pony mare at a private facility. She tested positive on Jan. 8 after developing neurological signs and was euthanized. Eight horses have been exposed. The second horse was a 15-year-old Standardbred mare at a boarding facility. She tested positive on Jan. 9 after developing acute neurologic signs and was euthanized. Twenty-eight horses have been exposed.EDCC Health Watch is an Equine Network marketing program that utilizes information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to create and disseminate verified equine disease reports. TheEDCCis an independent nonprofit organization that is supported by industry donations in order to provide open access to infectious disease information.EHV 101Herpesvirus is highly contagious among horses and can cause a variety of ailments in equids, including rhinopneumonitis (a respiratory disease usually found in young horses), abortion in broodmares, and EHM.In many horses, the first or only sign of EHV-1 infection is fever, which can go undetected. In addition to fever, other common signs of EHV-1 infection in young horses include cough, decreased appetite, depression, and a nasal discharge. Pregnant mares typically show no signs of infection before they abort, and abortions usually occur late in gestation (around eight months) but can be earlier. Abortions can occur anywhere from two weeks to several months following infection with EHV-1.Horses with EHM usually have a fever at the onset of the disease and might show signs of a respiratory infection. A few days later, neurologic signs such as ataxia (incoordination), weakness or paralysis of the fore- and hind limbs, urine retention and dribbling, loss of tail tone, and recumbency (inability to rise) develop.Herpesvirus is easily spread by nose-to-nose or close contact with an infectious horse; sharing contaminated equipment including bits, buckets, and towels; or clothing, hands, or equipment of people who have recently had contact with an infectious horse.Routine biosecurity measures, including hygiene and basic cleaning and disinfection practices, should be in place at all times to help prevent disease spread.Current EHV-1 vaccines might reduce viral shedding but are not protective against the neurologic form of the disease. Implementing routine biosecurity practices is the best way to minimize viral spread, and the best method of disease control is disease prevention.

Equilibrium Massage Therapy: Supporting Equine Comfort & Performance
Equine massage therapy has become an increasingly recognised part of horse care, with many owners turning to trusted products to improve wellbeing and support recovery. Equilibrium is at the forefront of massage therapy innovation. Their product range has been developed using research-led insights, and studies have shown significant positive impacts on equine muscle condition, relaxation and movement*.In the following article, we outline key findings from independent studies into the Equilibrium Massage Back Pad and Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad to help our customers better understand how Equilibrium massage therapy can become an integral part of their equine care routine.Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back PadThe Equilibrium Massage Back Pad: Research FindingsEquilibrium Massage Pad Heatsense: Research InsightsMassage Therapy Support with the Massage Mitt HotspotRedpost Equestrian: Here to HelpThe Equilibrium Massage Back Pad: Research FindingsIn 2007, Myerscough College conducted an investigation into the short-term effects of massage therapy on horses backs, assessing any changes observed in:Back flexibilityStride lengthIndicators of relaxationEquilibrium Massage Back PadHorses in the treatment group wore the Equilibrium Massage Back Pad and these results were compared against a control group.Key Findings:The study identified several measurable short-term changes in the treatment group, including:An increase in spinal range of motion (deemed significant)Static arch and dip measurements of the spine were taken using a flexi-ruler, comparing spinal range of motion prior to treatment and after treatment. Significantly greater arch and dip measurements were recorded in the treatment group, which suggested improved flexibility and freedom of movement throughout the horses backs.Promotion of Overall Relaxation (deemed significant)Stress and relaxation were measured by taking salivary cortisol levels, measuring heart rate and recording behaviour. The heart rate results showed a significant difference between the control and treatment group, inferring that the horses treated with the massage pad were more relaxed due to the effects of the massage.Increase in stride lengthThe treatment group did show some increase in stride length in comparison to the control group.Interpretation:The data, indicative of improved relaxation, could suggest that horses receiving Equilibrium massage therapy experience improvements to their overall wellbeingHorses could demonstrate improved performance because the data suggests improved spinal flexibilityWe would also expect relaxed muscles to assist with improvements in flexibility and movement, and so we might expect to see evidence of this in the performance of competition horses (such as those performing dressage movements or jumping technical fences).Shop the Equilibrium Massage Back Pad HereEquilibrium Massage Pad Heatsense: Research Insights More recently, Equilibrium expanded their product range with the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad. This innovative product combines all the benefits of Equilibrium massage therapy alongside the controlled application of therapeutic heat.An independent investigation led by saddle fitter Jasmin Gutsell in 2024 explored short-term changes in equine back dimensions following use of the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad.Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back PadStudy Summary10 horses (ages 10-14) in regular trainingHorses were assessed before and after two sessions on separate daysThe sessions comprised of 30 minutes use of the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad (massage and heat) and a walk and trot lunge sessionA flexible curve ruler traced the shape of the back at six anatomical points (including the saddle tree point, a key load-bearing area under the saddle).Lunging was incorporated as part of the 2024 study to examine both massage and exercise effects.Outcomes and ImplicationsStatistically significant changes in back dimensions were recorded after a single session with the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back PadMost measured areas showed increases in dimension, interpreted as muscle expansion likely linked to increased blood flow and muscle activationSome areas showed a decrease in size, thought to reflect muscle relaxation or fluid redistribution rather than loss of muscle tone. There was no strong correlation between the changes observed following use of the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad and those seen after lunging. These results showed that the effects of the Heatsense pad were different from those produced by lunging, suggesting that massage with heat may influence the muscles in ways that exercise alone does not. This supports the suggestion that the Heatsense pad has the potential to be used effectively as a warm up or preparatory tool before exercise or competition. The Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad has the potential to maximise your warm up before training sessions or competitions.Shop the Equilibrium Heatsense Massage Back Pad HereMassage Therapy Support with the Massage Mitt HotspotThe Equilibrium Massage Mitt Hotspot draws on the same research as the Heatsense pad in its design, but allows more targeted application to specific muscle groups.
