Supplement Might Reduce Airway Inflammation in Horses With Asthma
Equine asthma is marked by airway inflammation and can cause clinical signs ranging from occasional coughing to overt labored breathing. | Shelley PaulsonEquine asthma is a chronic inflammatory respiratory disease in horses marked by airway inflammation, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and in advanced cases, airway remodeling, or a progressive thickening and damage of the airway walls.Horses can develop two types of equine asthma: mildmoderate (MEA), which often presents as exercise intolerance and an occasional cough, and severe asthma (SEA), which causes overt labored breathing at rest.Clinical signs of MEA often surface subtly and get missed until the horses condition worsens. Therefore, early detection plays a critical role once you suspect your horse has MEA.Researchers on a recent study, including Kelsey Hart, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, professor at the University of Georgias College of Veterinary Medicine, in Athens, examined whether polyphenols, a nutritional intervention, could shift airway inflammation in horses with asthmaa novel adjunctive approach beyond environmental management and pharmaceutical use.Studying Polyphenols for Horse With AsthmaIn the first part of their study, the researchers examined eight healthy horses and 10 horses with equine asthma over a six-to-eight-week period to determine whether a dietary supplement containing mixed polyphenols (naturally occurring micronutrients with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties) could reduce equine airway and systemic inflammation (as measured in the horses blood). In the second part, the researchers randomly assigned five asthmatic horses to either a polyphenol supplement or a control group (no supplement). They fed the horses in both groups a low-dust diet for four weeks, followed by four weeks of dusty hay to exacerbate airway inflammation. The team measured outcomes through inflammatory markers in the lungs via bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and in systemic circulation via blood tests.Effects of Polyphenol Supplementation on Equine AsthmaSupplementation with mixed polyphenols reduced several markers of airway inflammation in asthmatic horses in the first part of the study compared to the nonsupplemented control group. Specifically, the percentage of neutrophils and the concentration of interleukin-6, both of which indicate inflammation, were decreased in fluid obtained from the horses lungs via bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL).In the healthy horse group, supplementation produced less dramatic effects (because baseline inflammation was already low), but the researchers still observed trends toward lower inflammation levels. When to Consider Polyphenol SupplementationIf your horse shows mild signs of poor performance, an occasional cough, or has a history of airway inflammation, talk with your veterinarian about using a supplement such as mixed polyphenols. However, supplementation does not replace core environmental management (dust control, ventilation, hay quality) or any necessary medical interventions (e.g., corticosteroids).Take-Home MessageThe researchers findings suggest that polyphenol supplementation can be beneficial for horses with mild-to-moderate equine asthma by reducing airway inflammation in conjunction with good environmental management and might be a beneficial adjunct to the management of some horses with asthma. However, to best improve equine respiratory health and performance, a holistic approach that considers adequate barn management practices and nutrition remains vital. The study, Effects of mixed polyphenol supplementation on lower airway inflammation in horses with Equine Asthma Syndrome, appeared in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science in November, 2025.

Discovering the Essentials of Equestrian Bridleway Officers: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step Action Details Step 1 Understand the Role of a Bridleway Officer Bridleway Officers, either volunteers or council employees, ensure public rights of way (PRoW) are open, accessible, and safe for horse riders by inspecting bridleways and addressing access issues. Step 2 Visit the Official BHS Website Start your search for a local Bridleway Officer at the British Horse Society website, particularly in the Access & Rights of Way section for resources and information on bridleways. Step 3 Locate the Local Bridleway Officer Directory or Contact Information Explore the BHS website's Access & Rights of Way pages for a "Find Your Local Officer" tool or directory. If unavailable, use the Contact Us page for support. Step 4 Use Local Authority Resources as a Supplement Visit local council or national park authority websites for information on bridleway maintenance, as these bodies have obligations to keep public rights of way accessible. Step 5 Understand What Information Youll Need Prepare precise location details, descriptions of any concerns, photographs if relevant, and your contact information when reaching out to a local Bridleway Officer. Navigating the World of Equestrian Bridleway Officers For avid horse riders, ensuring that bridleways are safe and accessible is as important as the riding experience itself. In this article, we take you through a step-by-step guide to understanding the British Horse Society (BHS) Bridleway Officers and how they play a crucial role in maintaining these paths. Our goal is to simplify the process of finding your local Bridleway Officer and demystifying the roles they undertake to keep bridleways safe. Step 1: Understand the Role of a Bridleway Officer A Bridleway Officer, also known as an Access & Bridleway Officer, is vital in maintaining safe routes for horse riders. These officers work either as volunteers or council employees, dealing with tasks such as inspecting bridleways, addressing access issues, and working with landowners. Their efforts focus on ensuring that public rights of way (PRoW) are open and accessible. For instance, BHS volunteer officers strive to protect and enhance off-road access for equestrians by tackling obstructions and local campaigning. Learn more about their roles here. Volunteer and Council Roles: What's the Difference? While volunteer officers primarily tackle local access issues and campaigns, local authorities employ Rights of Way Officers. These officers have statutory duties to maintain the pathways and engage with communities and landowners to keep them accessible. Step 2: Visit the Official BHS Website The best starting point for finding a local Bridleway Officer is the British Horse Society website. It offers centralized information for horse riders across the UK. Navigating the Site for Resources Head over to the Access & Rights of Way section, which contains a wealth of resources about bridleways, riding routes, and volunteer opportunities. It's a treasure trove of valuable information for enthusiasts and volunteers alike. Step 3: Locate the Local Bridleway Officer Directory or Contact Information Finding contact details for local officers is often straightforward. Browse the website's Access & Rights of Way pages, which typically have a "Find Your Local Officer" tool or a directory. What to Do If Contact Information Isn't Directly Available If you encounter issues, you can check the Contact Us page or reach out to support through the BHS membership team to assist in connecting you with the local office. Step 4: Use Local Authority Resources as a Supplement As Bridleway Officers often operate within local councils, it can be helpful to visit your local county council or national park authority websites. These governmental bodies have legal obligations to maintain and document public rights of way, including bridleways. Contacting the Right Departments Search your local council's website for the Rights of Way or Public Rights of Way teams. These offices typically look after footpaths, bridleways, and investigate issues to improve accessibility. Read more about their duties here. Step 5: Understand What Information Youll Need When Contacting an Officer To ensure you receive the best assistance from your local Bridleway Officer, it's important to be prepared with necessary information. Heres a handy checklist: Precise location details of the bridleway or issue Clear descriptions of any obstruction or concern Include photographs, if relevant Your contact information for any follow-up Additional Insights: Legal and Maintenance Context In England, Public Rights of Way encompass over 140,000 miles of paths, bridleways, and byways, underscoring the importance of bridleway officers in maintaining this extensive network. They are essential in keeping these paths obstacle-free. Discover more about public rights of way responsibilities. Legal Obligations and Landowner Responsibilities Local highway authorities must ensure rights of way remain usable and must act on reports typically within a month. There are also obligations on landowners to keep pathways clear, fostering collaboration with Bridleway Officers to achieve this. Engage and Equip: Useful Resources Leverage the following resources to ensure a harmonic bridleway experience: BHS Access & Rights of Way pages: Centralized information and volunteer details. GOV.UK guidance: An overview of legal frameworks and statutory duties. Local County Council Rights of Way team pages: Find official contacts and services. Conclusion: A Smoother Ride for All This comprehensive guide combines the expertise of the BHS platform and local authority resources to ensure you can efficiently connect with the right Bridleway Officer, enhancing bridleway maintenance and safety for riders, walkers, and the community alike. Whether you're exploring the Jodhpur Collection or the Horse Riding Boots, having clear, safe pathways ensures a smooth ride for all. Stay informed and equipped with the resources provided, and you will no longer have to navigate the maze of bridleways alone. Happy riding!```html```

Contemporary Design Styles Styles like modern farmhouse and colonial revival respect and optimize traditional designs. Market Demand The market for these conversions is growing due to increasing value of historic character and sustainability. Challenges Structural assessments and compliance with modern building codes are necessary for successful conversions. Conclusion Converting stables honors the past while meeting modern needs, offering endless possibilities. The Charm of Antiquity: Unveiling the Allure of Classic Stables in Modern Times Introduction: A New Purpose for Historic Structures There is something undeniably captivating about historic stables. These relics of our agricultural past are being given a new lease of life as they undergo remarkable transformations into chic homes, artistic studios, upscale hospitality venues, and innovative workspaces. This renaissance is indicative of a broader cultural shift towards sustainable restoration and preserving our architectural heritage. Why Stables? Understanding Their Architectural Appeal The Inherent Qualities of Historic Stable Structures Built with durability at their core, historic stables offer robust constructions comprising timber frames, stone foundations, and substantial beams, making them ideal for contemporary conversion. These structures boast authentic aesthetics with exposed beams and timeworn finishes that modern equivalents often fail to replicate. The Economics of Conversion Transforming an old stable into a modern space might seem daunting, but it's often more economically viable than starting from scratch. Existing structural elements reduce costs and align with environmental responsibility by minimizing waste and resource use. Residential Conversions: From Equine Quarters to Family Homes Case Study: Manor House Stables in the Cotswolds A prime example of a residential conversion is the Manor House Stables. Once home to a champion racehorse, it now serves as a contemporary three-bedroom household while retaining its equestrian charm. The conversion retained the original layout and even reused horse troughs as unique bathroom sinks. The Scandinavia Approach to Stable Living Nordic regions have successfully merged old-world charm with contemporary comforts, serving as a testament to how deteriorated structures can be thoughtfully transformed into elegant homes. The Norfolk Model: High-Tech Heritage This 19th-century Norfolk stable highlights how modern materials like glass and steel can add a sleek edge to historic buildings while preserving their rustic essence. Creative and Commercial Transformations: Beyond Residential Use Studio and Workspace Conversions Adaptive reuse has also turned stables into creative workspaces. An example is a conversion in Kirkland, Washington, where a stable has become a 760-square-foot studio with elegant open-plan designs and bright, airy interiors. Hospitality Transformations: Restaurants, Inns, and Retreats The hospitality sector has embraced stable conversions, turning them into appealing destinations. For instance, Barn8 at Hermitage Farm has converted a former horse barn into a luxurious farm-to-table dining venue, complete with original horse stalls repurposed as dining areas. Luxury Hospitality and Event Spaces Luxury conversions like Barn8 offer premium experiences with their unique space that incorporates history into comfort and luxury seamlessly. They support events ranging from private dinners to grand celebrations with style and sophistication. Design Principles for Successful Stable Conversions Respecting Original Character While Embracing Modernity The secret to a successful conversion is in striking a balance. Original elements like beams and stonework are maintained, while modern amenities are integrated to ensure contemporary comfort. Material Strategies in Contemporary Conversions Using a combination of old and new materials like timber and steel can effectively juxtapose history with modernity. Such materials don't only stand the test of time but also add aesthetic richness. The Sustainability Imperative: Why Conversions Matter Conversion is not just about aesthetics or economic benefits. It plays a crucial role in sustainability. By preserving existing buildings, we reduce waste and the carbon footprint inherent in new construction. Contemporary Design Styles Applied to Historic Stables Modern Farmhouse Integration Modern farmhouse styles can breathe new life into stables by combining sleek design with rustic charm, making spaces that are both functional and fantastically inviting. Colonial Revival Approaches Last but not least, colonial revival designs respect traditional layouts while optimizing these for modern use, keeping the spirit of the original design intact. The Market for Converted Stables: Demand and Value The market for these conversions is burgeoning. With factors such as historic character and sustainability being increasingly valued, converting these spaces is becoming ever more lucrative for property owners. Challenges and Considerations in Stable Conversions Structural Assessment and Remediation Despite their advantages, stable conversions may face challenges like structural deficiencies requiring expert resolution. These must be assessed professionally before embarking on a conversion project. Building Code Compliance Adapting historic structures to meet modern codes can be complex and requires meticulous planning to ensure these charming old buildings remain safe and functional. Conclusion: The Enduring Appeal of Historic Stables Ultimately, the conversion of classic stables into modern spaces encapsulates the best of both worlds. They preserve and honor the past while providing for the needs of today. Whether you're looking to invest, live, or simply seek inspiration from these historic gems, the possibilities are endless when respecting the charm of antiquity.```html```

Survey seeks to find out about the worming practices of yard owners
Livery and competition yard owners are being asked to take part in a survey to help the veterinary profession tackle resistance to worms and safeguard equine health in the future. The survey is the second phase of Project WORMS,which stands for Working to Overcome Resistance and Make for a Sustainable future. The project is a collaboration between VetPartners Equine Clinical Board, CVS Group, IVC Evidensia and Equine Reproductive Services, supported by the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA).Ethical approval has been obtained from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).Project WORMS was set up due to a real concern that the horse world could be left without effective de-wormers in the future, putting horses at an increased risk of parasite damage-related illnesses such as severe diarrhoea, weight loss and colic, which are currently preventable.Yard managers decisionOne of the key findings from the initial phase of Project WORMS was that 42% of the horse owners who took part in the survey kept their horses on a yard which is managed by someone else. For 40% of these horses, it is the yard manager who makes decisions about worming practices. The latest survey aims to understand the decisions of the owners and managers of yards with two or more liveries. The findings will be used to help support yard owners to make better decisions on their properties, to try and prevent serious disease, and even death, due to wormer resistance in the future. We need to take action because resistance has been demonstrated in all the deworming drugs that are currently available to us and there are no new products being developed to replace them, said Julia Shrubb, a vet and chair of the equestrian industrys CANTER initiative.Encouraging resultsThe results of the first Project WORMS survey were encouraging because they showed that resistance has become more widely understood and more owners are switched on to testing. However, some liveries may be continuing to over-use dewormers due to rules set out by their yard.Livery yard owners have to make difficult decisions when considering a whole yard approach to parasite control and we want to understand their decision making more, so we can better support them. Its really important that yard owners make sure their deworming approach includes risk assessing and testing. If many continue as they are, we are not only risking the health and welfare of horses in the future, but the viability of livery businesses if the land cannot safely be grazed by horses.Survey linkTo take part in the survey click here.
