    Evaluating the Role of Stress Biomarkers in Predicting Equine Gastric Ulcers
    Equine gastric ulcer syndrome affects 5070% of horses, impacting both welfare and performance. | Adobe StockThe equine stomach has two parts: an upper (squamous) region lined with epithelial cells that form a protective barrier and a lower (glandular) region that produces gastric juices, mucus, and other molecules important to digestion. Normally, a mat of food buffers the gastric juices in the lower region, minimizing splashing onto the squamous lining. Still, ulcers can develop in either regionequine squamous gastric disease (ESGD) or equine glandular gastric disease (EGGD)and sometimes both at once.Although the two fall under the umbrella of equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS), they are distinct diseases. ESGD is primarily a management-based disease, says Ben Sykes, BSc, BVMS, MS, MBA, Dipl. ACVIM, PhD, FHEA, a world-leading EGUS expert based in Australia. Risk factors include inadequate forage, an excess of nonstructural carbohydrates, an excessive cumulative duration of exercise, and transport. In contrast, EGGD is primarily a stress-based disease and much more individual-horse-centric. Risk factors include breed, increased number of handlers/trainers/riders, and exercising five or more days a week.Although veterinarians dont usually consider ESGD stress-driven, hay intakethe main protective factordepends on normal eating behavior. Horses must feel socially safe to eat properly. Management factors that contribute to behavioral stress can also, indirectly, lead to an increased risk of ESGD via changes in eating behavior, says Sykes. These changes are often subtle and unobserved, leading to a false assumption that the provision of unrestricted access to forage automatically reduces the risk of ESGD. In actuality, its the consumption, not provision, of forage that reduces risk.Equine gastric ulcer syndrome affects 5070% of horses, impacting both welfare and performance. Signs of EGUS can include weight loss, poor hair coat, aversive ridden behaviors (especially in glandular disease), girthiness, and spookiness.Diagnosing EGUS: Gastroscopy and BiomarkersGastroscopy remains the gold standard for diagnosing EGUS. The procedure involves a veterinarian passing an endoscope through the nasal passages into the stomach to observe its lining. But gastroscopy involves feed restriction and sedation, and repeated endoscopies can be stressful for the horse and costly for the owner.This has fueled interest in alternative approaches for detecting gastric ulcers in horses, such as biomarkers measured in blood or saliva. Researchers define biomarkers as measurable indicators of normal biological processes, pathogenic (disease or damage) processes, or responses to an exposure or intervention. Veterinarians can use them to make a diagnosis, determine susceptibility or a prognosis, or monitor treatment response. Reliable EGUS biomarkers could reduce the need for gastroscopy, predict at-risk horses, distinguish between ESGD and EGGD, and help guide treatment duration.Examples of EGUS Biomarkers in SalivaDespite their allure, few groups have studied salivary biomarkers in EGUS. Salivary markers are appealing due to noninvasive collection, minimal training and equipment, limited animal stress, and rapid collection, says Alberto Muoz-Prieto, PhD, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Murcia, Spain.In 2017 researchers examined cortisol in saliva and found horses with EGGD had higher stimulated levels than those without. But follow-up was limited and, as Sykes notes, cortisol/stress is common across many diseases, prompting researchers to pursue more specific markers.Muoz-Prieto and colleagues evaluated salivary biomarkers in 105 horses: those with EGUS, horses with EGUS-like signs but negative gastroscopy results, and healthy controls. The researchers collected the samples just before gastroscopy.They assessed markers including immune proteins (IgG, IgA, adenosine deaminase, S100 A8/A9, S100 A12), uric acid, ferric-reducing ability of saliva (FRAS), and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP).These are inflammatory and redox status (balance between oxidants and antioxidants) biomarkers and were selected because we wanted to evaluate how inflammatory biomarkers and biomarkers related to the redox status could change in EGUS, says Muoz-Prieto.Key findings from their research included:They saw no differences in IgG, but salivary IgA was higher in horses with both ESGD and EGGD.ADA was higher in all EGUS groups, especially EGGD.S100 A12 and uric acid were elevated in all groups (including non-EGUS), though uric acid was surprisingly lower in EGUS horses than controls.FRAS was higher in EGUS horses, particularly those with both ESGD and EGGD.The next steps will be to do larger studies with a larger population and see if these biomarkers and other biomarkers previously described in saliva can be used as a help to detect and monitor EGUS, says Muoz-Prieto.Correlation does not equal causation, says Sykes. So, while we might see differences in certain markers, its not necessarily directly related to the underlying cause. Sometimes we can explain the relationship and sometimes we cant, in which case the marker becomes a proxy.He adds that biomarkers might also prove useful in monitoring healing: If, for example, we can show that reductions in biomarker A consistently predict healing, then we could reduce the need for follow-up gastroscopy. Whether this relates to a single biomarker or interpretation of several in parallel is yet to be elucidated.     Josh Nichol Reflects on the Heart of the Horse Judging
    A month ago, I had the privilege of judging the Heart of the Horse competition, created by Niki and Dustin Flundra. Thesetrainer challenges often carry a certain stigma, as opinions can be quite polarized. The main reason I accepted Nikis invitation was simple: she is not interested in mainstream horsemanship. She is in it for the horses, deeply committed to representing the authentic lifestyle of working cowboys. That is a value we share, and it made saying yes an easy decision.I wanted to share this experience to offer a perspective from the other side of the fence. My hope is that these reflections bring clarity and appreciation for both the horses and the trainers.Learn more about my approach through my masterclasses here.How the Judging WorksCompetitors are scored across 10 components for each training session, with marks ranging from 10 to 15 points per element. Each of the three judges works independently to avoid bias, there is no discussion of scores during sessions. This structure is designed to keep judging fair and objective.One of the most challenging aspects as a judge is that we score each element, not just the final picture spectators see. A horse-and-rider team might shine on the final obstacle but lose significant points earlier in the process. Even an outstanding finish cannot erase deductions from previous rounds. To win, a trainer must demonstrate consistency across every stage, not just in the finale.My Observations of the CompetitorsBruce ChristieBruce is a skilled horseman I know personally, and I respect both his horsemanship and his integrity. His horse started out worried and reluctant, but Bruce showed patience and professionalism. Day two brought challenges with forward motion, which cost valuable points despite his thoughtful approach. By day three, Bruce and his horse made a remarkable comeback, completing all requirements and excelling on the final course. If results were based solely on the last round, Bruce would have won outright. Unfortunately, the deficit from day two held him back. Still, his horsemanship left a lasting impression, and his little mare walked away with more confidence than she began with, that is a true win.Mitch ZellerI hadnt met Mitch before but knew of his background and expected him to be a fine hand. He chose a striking Palomino mare, sensitive, intelligent, and looking for clarity. Mitch started strong, leading after day one. On day two, he again led the standings and showed great consideration as his mare grew tired, choosing patience over pushing. His final round was thoughtful, though he was unable to complete one obstacle, which cost nearly 30 points total across the judges. Mitchs willingness to put his horses well-being first earned my respect, and I would trust him with any young horse.Pat ParelliPat brought both experience in sharing his knowledge and a deep respect for the traditions he carries forward. His horse tended to retreat inward rather than overreact, and Pat worked steadily each day, making progress through small challenges. His final round was consistent, with points earned across the board. Pat showed a great ability to set up a clear system that guided his horse to the finish line. In the end, his steady accumulation of points secured him the win, though just by a hair.Results and TakeawaysFinal standings placed Pat first, Mitch a close second, and Bruce in third. Yet from where I sat, all three men demonstrated true horsemanship. None of them sacrificed their horses for the sake of a ribbon, and all showed integrity.The real victory lies in how each trainer chose to honor their horse in the moment. That is what builds trust, longevity, and true partnership.Suggestions for the FutureOne area I believe could be refined is how we weight the scoring. At present, trainers are evaluated on 10 elements for each round, with an additional 25 discretionary points for how well they set their horse up for the future. This part of the scoring is meant to capture not just competency in the moment, but the quality of horsemanship that ensures a horse leaves the process more confident and prepared.Going forward, I would like to see this element carry even greater weight. To me, how a horse finishes, especially if they come through a struggle with more confidence, is every bit as important as how they move through obstacles. Its not just about getting through the course; its about building a horse for the long term.I dont see this as a failure in the system, but rather part of an ongoing process of refinement. Each year gives us the chance to learn, to adjust, and to make the scoring reflect more fully the values we all want to see: authentic horsemanship and setting horses up for success.Closing ThoughtsHeart of the Horse is unique because it celebrates more than performance, it honors the lifestyle, the values, and the integrity that horses deserve. Judging it was a privilege, and I am grateful to Niki and Dustin for inviting me.     Day 1 of the 2025 FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championship for Young Horse in Lanaken, Belgium proved to once again be happy hunting ground for Irish riders, horses and members of the Team Ireland Equestrian Young Horse Jumping Squad supported by Monoshield Equine.Champion of the 7-Year-Old division in 2024, Michael Pender had a busy opening day when leading off as the very first rider to jump in the 5-Year-Old qualifier when proceedings got underway at 07:45 local time. A strong opener to the days competition as he was also the first to jump clear alongside HHS Evorra (ISH).Ballypatrick-based British rider Harry Wood followed immediately with Boleybawn Alexa (ISH) and also left all poles intact to jump an all-important opening double clear.Pender returned to the Ratina Z Arena later in the day, an arena that has been a success for him on many previous occasions just like in 2024 when he steered HHS Mercedes (ISH) to win the 7-Year-Old Championship, and in 2023 when capturing the 5-Year-Old Championship with HHS Ocala (ISH).This time however, he came armed with the duo of chestnuts; HHS Flonix (ISH) and HHS Venice (ISH), jumping double clear with both. His jump-off time of 28.85 with HHS Venice proving unbeatable in this opening qualifier.There was further success for Irish connections in the Top 10 as 6th place went to Belgian rider Nick Vrins on the Irish-bred Realteens Orestus (ISH).Irish Sport Horse Realteens Orestus and Nick Vrins impressed in Lanaken. Roscommon and was a member of the team that represented the Irish Sport Horse Studbook in the 5- and 6-Year-Old divisions at the WBFSH Studbooks Jumping Global Champions Trophy held in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands in 2023 and 2024 respectively with Kerins.Recently crowned Irish National Champion Niamh McEvoy who made history in Lanaken in 2024 when winning both the 5-Year-Old Consolation Final and the 5-Year-Old Championship finished in 9th place in the opening 7-Year-Old qualifier with her Wildcard entry Seguela V/D Gravenhoeve (BWP).In the first of the 5-Year-Old qualifiers held in the Alme Z Arena, 121 horses jumped double clear to divide the class.Accompanying the aforementioned clears from Pender and Harry Wood were a further 13 double clear rounds from members of the Team Ireland Equestrian Young Horse Squad representing the Irish Studbooks or Wildcards managed by Chef DEquipe Taylor Vard, or individual entries.The 6-Year-Old horses first qualifier took place in the Ramiro Z Arena and saw 85 horses jump double clear.
