Calls for horse owners to complete weight survey in bid to learn more about the equine obesity epidemic
Owners of horses and ponies who are overweight are being urged to complete a weight management survey in order to increase understanding about the equine obesity epidemic. It is thought that more than half of leisure horses and ponies are carrying too much weight, which has very serious consequences for the horses health. The survey is being carried out by Spillers. A statement from the feed manufacturer said the results will help to shape the weight management resources it offers people caring for overweight equines.Managing equine obesity is crucial for the health and wellbeing of our horses, said Bella Fricker. As horse owners ourselves we know how hard it can be to keep our horses waistlines in check. This survey gives us the opportunity to listen directly to horse owners so that we can continue to provide the best possible support to help horses achieve healthier weights. Its all a part of our mission to end equine obesity in the UK by 2035.Equine obesityIt is estimated that over 50% of leisure horses and ponies are overweight or obese, with obesity rates in some groups of ponies as high as 70%.Excess weight increases the risks of multiple health problems, with laminitis being the most serious.Other health concerns include equine metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Joint problems caused or exacerbated by the horse or pony carrying excess weight is also a high risk.Quite simply, horses usually get fat because they receive more calories in their diet than they burn through activities such as exercise, keeping warm and just the daily energy required to keep them alive (basal metabolic rate), said the Spillers statement.Knowing how waistlines expand is one thing, but doing something about it is often a trickier exercise. The surveyThe survey is open until 1 August 2025 and takes less than five minutes to complete.Participants will be entered into a draw to win a three-month supply of the Spillers balancer of their choice. Three winners will be drawn. The survey is designed to provide a better understanding of the unique needs of owners of overweight horses or ponies. You can complete the survey here.Main image Your Horse Library/Kelsey Media LtdRelated contentExpert guide to strip grazing in order to manage an equines weightHow to ride a horse so they burn more caloriesIts not the season itself that causes spring laminitis, warns vetOwner whose obese ponies lost 340kg between them warns against unqualified experts on social mediaThe post Calls for horse owners to complete weight survey in bid to learn more about the equine obesity epidemic appeared first on Your Horse.

Prioritize safety and adapt riding practices for a deeper connection with your horse. Riding in Darkness: Exploring the Benefits and Risks of Nighttime Horse HackingWelcome to the world of Just Horse Riders, a leading expert in horse riding apparel and equestrian supplements. Here, we delve into the intriguing realm of nighttime horse hacking, offering insights into its benefits and risks to help you make an informed decision about whether it's right for you and your equine companion. The Unique Appeal and Benefits of Nighttime Horse Hacking1. Cooler Temperatures and Comfort for Horse and RiderDuring the sweltering summer months, temperatures soar, making daytime rides uncomfortable for both horse and rider. Riding at night allows you to bask in cooler temperatures, reducing the risk of heat stress and dehydration for your horse. Night turnout is particularly advantageous in hot, humid climates, facilitating a more comfortable environment for the animals [source].2. Mental and Physical Health BenefitsHorseback riding has been lauded for its mental health benefits, as it reduces stress and promotes relaxation. Nighttime riding amplifies these benefits by providing a serene and meditative atmosphere, free from daytime distractions. Many riders report improved sleep and better mental clarity following a nighttime hack [source].3. Maximizing Turnout and Riding TimeFor those balancing busy schedules, nighttime rides can be the most convenient way to connect with their horses. Night turnout allows horses to spend more time outdoors, enhancing their physical health through improved bone density and joint flexibility. Horses instinctively prefer cooler periods, making them more comfortable at night [source].4. Reduced Exposure to InsectsPesky insects, such as flies and mosquitoes, are significantly less active at night, leading to a more pleasant riding experience. This aspect enhances the overall comfort for both horse and rider [source].The Risks and Challenges of Riding at Night1. Increased Risk of InjuryHorseback riding is inherently risky, with high injury rates surpassing those of sports like motorcycle riding and skiing. The low visibility at night exacerbates these risks, increasing the likelihood of accidents due to unseen obstacles or uneven terrain. Injuries such as spinal injuries, fractures, and concussions are documented hazards [source].2. Visibility and Navigation DifficultiesDarkness poses significant challenges in terms of visibility, making it difficult to see trails or potential hazards. It's crucial to invest in quality lighting gear, like reflective clothing and headlamps, to enhance visibility for both horse and rider. Despite these precautions, limited sight lines and shadows continue to pose risks.3. Animal Behavior and StressHorses, being prey animals, can be easily spooked by sudden noises or stimuli in the dark. Nervousness is often contagious, potentially leading to unsafe situations. Additionally, horses require darkness to sleep properly; bright lights in stables at night can cause sleep deprivation and stress [source].4. Weather and Environmental HazardsWhile nighttime temperatures can be beneficial, sudden drops in temperature may affect horse health, particularly if they aren't properly blanketed. Riders should also watch out for dew, frost, or fog that can make trails slippery.Best Practices for Safe Nighttime Horse Hacking Plan Familiar Routes: Choose well-known trails or paths free from unexpected obstacles. Equip Proper Lighting: Use headlamps, reflective gear, and illuminated tack. Ride with a Buddy: Whenever possible, ride with a companion or inform someone of your route and ETA. Check Weather Conditions: Avoid riding in fog, heavy dew, or icy conditions that impair footing. Use Appropriate Protective Gear: Helmets, body protectors, and boots are essential. Monitor Your Horses Condition: Ensure they are accustomed to the nighttime environment and check for signs of stress. Consider Stabling Practices: Minimize artificial lighting to support their sleep cycle [source].ConclusionNighttime horse hacking offers a refreshing escape into a world of cooler temperatures, tranquil environments, and extended riding opportunities. By prioritizing safety and adopting best practices, riders can incorporate nighttime rides into their routine, fostering a deeper connection with their horse while safeguarding their wellbeing. As with any riding activity, it's important to prioritize safety, know your horse's needs, and adapt to conditions. For further reading on horse turnout schedules and health considerations, explore Mad Barn's comprehensive guide [here]. Choosing the right hoof boots can aid not just in protection but also in successfully transitioning a horse to a barefoot lifestyle. Let's delve into the popular hoof boot brands and their attributes to help you make the best choice for your beloved horse! Why Hoof Boots Matter Before stepping into the nitty-gritty of brands, it's essential to understand why hoof boots are so pivotal. They provide protection, comfort, and support during rides on varying surfaces, preventing injuries and promoting natural hoof growth. 1. Renegade Hoof Boots Pros: Renegade Hoof Boots, particularly the Viper Shield model, stand out due to their durability and lightweight design. They're constructed from ultra-durable polyurethane, which ensures long-lasting protection and allows for natural hoof flexion (Renegade Hoof Boots). Featuring advanced features like a pivoting heel captivator, these boots cater well to horses with triangular hooves. Cons: While their advanced design offers remarkable benefits, they're admittedly on the higher end of the price spectrum. Moreover, achieving the perfect fit is crucial, as improper sizing can lead to discomfort. 2. Scoot Boots Pros: Scoot Boots are celebrated for their user-friendly and non-clunky design. They are crafted to discourage water or mud retention, reducing heel rubs and enhancing comfort (Chronicle Forums Discussion). They even cater to ponies with their "Scoot Minis" range. Cons: However, if your horse requires extensive cushioning or support, Scoot Boots might not fulfill that need comprehensively. 3. Equine Fusion Boots Pros: For horses in need of extra cushioning and flexibility, Equine Fusion boots are outstanding. They are particularly suited for activities that involve straight motion, like driving on hard roads (Horse and Rider Magazine). Cons: However, they may not stand the test of durability during twisty movements or high-speed events due to fabric parts that can tear. Also, some models might come across as fiddly to put on. 4. Cavallo Hoof Boots Pros: Cavallo hoof boots offer excellent full contact with the ground, supporting natural hoof function through a padded design. Its features like a cone locking mechanism add security, with the rubber soles ensuring unwavering grip (All Natural Horse Care). Cons: Their price can be a point of contention, as they generally cost more than some other brands. Additionally, their offerings may not fit all hoof sizes and types. 5. EasyBoot Hoof Boots Pros: EasyBoots shine in terms of reliability and adaptability, favored across various equestrian activities for their versatility. The diversity in their models, such as EasyBoot Gloves and Epics, caters to different equestrian needs (Riverearth.com Hoof Boot Review). Cons: Despite their reliable nature, some models might offer a more rigid sole that could be unsuitable for horses that require a flexible foundation. The Takeaway Selecting the perfect hoof boot comes down to understanding your horse's specific needs. Whether it's hoof shape, riding terrain, or the kind of cushioning needed, every brand brings unique pros and cons to the table. The right fit ensures optimal comfort, performance, and safety for your horse, so research and test various models to find your best match.
