The owner of a herd of rescue donkeys has shared how his hour-legged friends are helping to prevent wild fires in a Spanish town.Tivissa Donkey Firefighters (TDFF) is a Catalan charity that rescues abandoned or mistreated donkeys and allows them to graze in the local area. The donkeys clear undergrowth and biomass, reducing the risk of fire by consuming flammable vegetation.The donkeys arrive from various parts of Catalonia primarily, though some have also come from Aragon and the Valencian community, a charity spokesman told Your Horse.There are several initiatives like ours across Spain, for instance, in Andalusia and the Basque Country. People are surprised by the animal itself, but not by the role it plays, since we havent invented anything new; we are simply applying what our grandparents used to do.Tivissa, a hilltop municipality located in the Ribera dEbre comarca of the Tarragona province, has extensive forest cover that has been hard hit by fires over the years.We have gone three summers without major blazes, and it is possible that the donkeys are helping to prevent these fires from breaking out, added the spokesman.Our donkey brigade helps sustainable forest management through the ecological cleaning of undergrowth.
